Something he does with his comedy is reach out to people going through things he's gone through and say "I see you, and you're not alone", and it's just fucking beautiful. Unbelievably good comic.
Actually I thought the same thing when I first watched his new one. But once I watched it a few more times, it's really grown on me. I'm not sure how I'd rank them myself, both have really great moments. In This Economy is really consistently funny throughout the whole special, though.
Everyone with depression can relate to this on a deep personal level... while watching this video on their phone, while lying in an unmade bed eating ice cream with a fork.
Right? Anyone who hasn't been there might think this bit is a commentary on "laziness." Without even knowing this man, I immediately knew he has to be relating living day-to-day with depression. I've definitely eaten my fair share of ice cream with a fork LOL
Damn, he's one of my favorite comedians, but this is a wild set to revisit after everything he revealed last year about his depression. On one hand, it's great that he was able to convert it to comedy in situations like this, but on the other hand, it's terrifying to think about what he was actually going through personally at the time of this set (especially since I relate to several aspects of the set). I'm very glad he was able to get the help he needed to work on his depression, and hopefully he will continue to grow and thrive as a comedian.
So Ryan...it's been four years...have you installed the new toilet paper roll yet? And of course we want to know if you have refilled your Brita pitcher!
This is one of the best sets i have ever seen. Only because everyone here can relate to this and has done what he said. Everything he said, all us lazy ppl have done it too...it was GENIUS. gary is indeed UNDERRATED.
Everything he said I checked off my list of sadness as well. Every ... single ...thing. Except I actually drop donuts into the ice cream as try to smooth it out lol
I can soooo relate. Never dealt with depression or went thru it til my husband of 22 years asked for a divorce while we were at the beach celebrating. We were walking our dogs when he "told" me and all i could think of was to tell my aged King Scotty Dog to "bite him". I didn't as i was in shock. He had no reason why. When i moved in with my widowed girlfriend of 30 years...i slept in her basement(with Edward...my Scotty dog).I slept fully dressed in my uniform, hat, winter coat, sock and shoes. And ....around my clean and dry clothes that lay for weeks on the bed. Instead of ice cream, it was whiskey and coke for alot of weeks. So Gary, i can relate. BUT it does get better as time goes by. PS...ten years later, he begged me to take him back...said all the women he dated were flat out crazy.
@ everyone doesn't have it. others are delusional and not bright enough to realize their life sucks. think homeless people. not too many depressed homeless.
@ of course it is... Let's say everyone got aids, would you say "is it aids if everyone has it"? No you wouldn't, unless you're an idiot taken to a new level of stupidity. And as said, FAR from everyone has it, the world would go under way quicker than it is now if everyone did. People are also dumb enough to say they're depress or whatever when they are just down for the moment. That really undermines true depression which sucks, so few people even come close to understanding what real depression is.
gfunk6 - Im sorry but that is not the case. Effective disorders, especially depression, is an entire order of magnitude higher among homeless. The outcome of suicide is rife. That shouldn’t surprise anyone.
When we watch this, looking back, two things come to mind: - How gray Colbert has gotten - How we're all thankful that Gary was able to get help that he understands who he is and has the help he needs.
6'6" 245 pound tight end for Boston College on an athletic scholarship. They wanted to switch him to being a lineman on both squads because of his size and speed. He quit football then because he wanted to live after he left the game. He has a very funny routine called "Tom Brady makes men gay".
After watching his special “The Great Depresh” and realizing that this set was probably just a few months before his breakdown makes this seem like more of a cry for help than a 7 minute set
Daniccia see i get my depression confused w/ laziness. I mean i know he's a comedian but w/ a thread of truth in there and the stuff he's saying is pretty bad laziness and/or depression!!
The flat surface thing sounds like OCD as well, not the "everything has to be neat" fake OCD but a real "I have arbitrarily decided that it must be this way, or else".
Just finished eating ice cream with a fork (plastic) while sitting on the clean laundry pile on the bed...truly, he does know my world - toilet paper, "please let it be a.m." and so on!
Dear Gary Gulman: I have just met you, and I love you. Seriously, I don't have the ice cream thing ('cause I don't eat a lot of ice cream), but everything else is pretty spot on.
Me Too...Gary did that So Brilliantly too, and I've been hooked ever since then...(I "literally" just came across His "Trader Joe's Bit" yesterday...Wish I had sooner -- yet ALWAYS Better Even Later Than Never...Gary Is THE Best...❤️❤️❤️❣️👍👏🤘)...
Interesting. These aren't so much jokes as discerning observation. The comedy/humor is that the specifics cited are SO revelatory & commonly experienced by a contemporary audience.

This man is one the most underrated comedians.
Both of them. I'm sad they removed In This Economy once It's About Time was added, I'm not even sure where I can watch the former anymore :(

@@DamienDiehl I think all of his bits are on par with each other
He's not underrated by me! I think he's one of the best.
@@dereklewis4321 agreed, except his 'role playing' bit is one of the few bits where i near choked to death
His use of pauses is on point 👌🏻

Here’s an upvote from a man lying on his unmade bed

Bipolar here, and relating.... ❤
Actually he has struggled with severe depression. A lot of us can relate!
Very true.
The flat surface on the ice cream is so perfect
'why don't you wash a spoon?'
'ha.. why don't I shower' ahahah
Yes, that hit the spot
"Fork prints in ice cream are evidence of a life in chaos."
you just gotta love gary
"I said Gar- I'm very gentle with myself- I said Gar, just brush your top teeth"
🤣🤣

That was like the opposite of a motivational speech xD hilarious
Wait you listen to stand up comedy for motivation? Clearly you are in the wrong place, my friend.
I would say this oposite. If I was a loosee like this guy, this would be an eye opener.
This is classic procrastination-life-style - kind of motivating - until the procrastination "kicks in".
I can't decide if this makes me feel ashamed or validated.
Why not both?
He validates my shame.
he shames my validations.
he valishames me to a tee
Validated😁

This guy has my heart. Seriously. He's so smart and adorable.
That icecream thing...that shit is ON POINT !!!!
"I'm not washing a spoon until I'm all out of forks" ... This entire segment is like a look through a window into my whole life.
Keep swinging out of that depression, Gary. We need you.❤
Love this guy! Glad to hear he's doing better. He deserves to be happy, he makes so many others laugh! I wish him well.
I'm scared. He's been spying on me. The whole bit. All of it. Describes my life. EXACTLY.

Ironworks Physique there should be a Nobel prize for genius like that.... * runs to the freezer*
I almost ruptured my spleen watching this. His calm voice with his comedy is GOLD.

After seeing “The Great Depresh” this bit seems like cry for help. From what I know he’s a really great guy and I’m glad he’s doing better.
He said he was in a suicidal depression when he did this.
This man explained my life in 6 minutes
What "Life"?
Ares Apollo the life he described
You consider that a "Life"?
Ares Apollo sonny, I didn't say it was a good life. I said it was 'my life'. He explained my life in 6 minutes.
Sleep around the laundry for 2 days! 😂. Oh my gosh! I’m not the only one.
I always just leave my clean laundry in the basket until I’m ready to put it away… why dump it on the bed ahead of time?
"The thing they don't tell you about life is life... is every. single. day." Major depression in comedic form.
You called it. His new special The Great Depresh comes out next month. I kept thinking that while watching this.

I'm a little bit in love with him.
One of my new favorites
What we do out of laziness once in a while, is a routine for depressed people.
He's a got a nice stand-up special on Netflix too
When we watch this, looking back, two things come to mind:
- How gray Colbert has gotten
- How we're all thankful that Gary was able to get help that he understands who he is and has the help he needs.
His Netflix specials are absolutely excellent, so witty. Glad that he got on Colbert!
Wish it wasn't so difficult to find them!
One of the best comedians! I love Gary.
Surely a comedian as great as this deserves a better backdrop..?
One of the most underrated comics of this generation.
he is brilliant!!!! search his cookie hierarchy, the state abbreviations, brilliant!!!!
I second that... the "State Abbreviations" is pure comic genius.
This freakin' guy must have a camera in my apartment. Funny stuff and spot on.
Sleeping around the laundry pile for multiple days...100% accurate
GULMANNNNNNNNN
HES THE BESSSTT HAHAHAHA
His comedy is great. He's also the most attractive comedian who's ever lived.

Gary is so damn funny everythin that he says he makes funny... it sucks how he’s underrated cause he should be ontop of the comedy world right now
I'm afraid the pressures of being "on top" might be too much for him. But I do agree he us shamefully underrated.
Gary Gulman is my spirit animal.
Gary is a unique talent, I have followed him for years, and his material never fades…. His delivery is magnificent!

I'm remember seeing him debut on Last Comic Standing eons ago. Always a great set.
Simple, effortless and BRILLIANT.
Gary is a real comedian. He doesn't need funny material, his delivery just makes everything funny.
Sleep around it? Nah, I just sleep on the couch.
I really like this guy because he provides a nice break from politics.

No wonder his newest special is called "The Great Depresh"! You can tell he's talking about depression.
