You explained things clearly, but the explanation was made confusing because nothing was working for you the way you expected. I still managed to follow along, though, so cool. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I've been wondering how these things work.
This video is absolutely amazing. I have had a Z50A, XR70, XR200 and XR500 (not all 3 speeds obviously) and I have never really known for sure what kind of magic was happening in there. Thank you for putting the time into explaining these awesome transmissions! (Even if it was 3 years ago!)
what point were you looking for? this was well explained from the shift detent to the shift pawl to the dogs and fork and the drum and linkage. he was thorough and explained it well for the video being 8 minutes long.
Hi Alex, hoping you will get this question. I've got a '94 CT70 that has a crack in the left crank case; little bit of oil leaks out. The crack is right there where the mainshaft houses into the left crankcase. Looking at this video of yours I can see that imbedded in the crankcase are hardened sleeves for each of the shafts. You remove the kickstarter shaft and we can see the hardened sleeve imbedded in the crankcase. Now the crack in my left crankcase has a little chip missing as well and you can see a little bit of the hardened sleeve in which the mainshaft would be secured...on the left side. I was thinking that some metal glue could be used to fill in this crack and chip. As opposed to completely replacing the left crankcase. After all the crankcase doesn't take a lot of stress, the hardened sleeve takes the brunt and intimate forces with the mainshaft. Why isn't the mainshaft housed in bearings on both sides? It has to spin at high rpms with a lot of forces from the piston gears and a lot of resistance from the countershaft ? Thanks Excellent video, I can't believe the troll mentality that would complain about this video
I would love to see a video of the reassembly of the transmission gears and how they’re stacked in place. I’ve got one in pieces that I’m nervous about trying to put it together.
Just like the engines of the 60's except back then, the shift drum was one piece. The shift forks used to wear out pretty often. When you split the cases you had to lift the ratchet away from the drum to allow the cases to come apart.
We need to get you a tripod, but great video as I just got a z50 and had no idea how the gears worked. Thanks! Question: Is the automatic clutch just centrifugal? What if it clunks/jolts pretty hard when switching from 1-2, 2-3, and when down shifting too? Even if inlet off the throttle and wait a second or two it hits pretty hard when shifting. Is the clutch worn out or can it be adjusted at all?
The auto clutch is disengaged in two ways, first by letting the engine idle (the centrifugal part), and second by pressing down on the shifter (which happens every time you shift). As you press the shift lever up or down, two things happen in the engine. It disengages the clutch and it shifts to the next gear. I have a video showing how to adjust the Honda 50/70 clutch. Sounds like yours is out of adjustment so it's not disengaging when you shift.
The basic principle is the same. Check that the detent arm (spring loaded lever with the wheel that rides the star) is in place and not cranked. You might have really worn shift pins also but not likely. Yes you can start in gear but since the kickstart goes through the transmission, it will move. It will only move while you are kicking though, once it starts, the centrifugal clutch will keep it from moving.
I would make sure the clutch is adjusted correctly. Also, make sure the engine idle speed isn't set too low, this can cause it to stall when put into gear. A low idle may also cause the stalling when coming back to idle. An improperly adjusted clutch can cause the rough shifting.
hi nice vid i just picked up a atc 125m 4 speed im sure you know about them i just have a quick question, the bike jumped out of gear so im figureing its the shift star? or something to do with that set up could you help me out? thanks
Did it shift hard before you replaced the head gasket? If yes then the headgasket is irrellevant to your problem. If not, then you caused it which doesn't really make sense. There is no reason for you to mess with the bottom end if you're replacing a head gasket. Either way, check that the clutch is adjusted correctly. If so, then you'll need to dig deeper. Check that the shift star isn't loose, then split the cases and see if you have a bent/worn shift fork, or worn shift pins.
The internal parts will not dry out. Oil does not evaporate. Even sitting and not moving will not remove the film left over every part from the last time it ran. If it did, engines would start dry every time until oil circulated to the bearings and crank. This would significantly reduce engine life. The film left over is what lubes the engine for the first few seconds till oil is circulated to the necessary areas.
Hello, I have a 1997 Honda Z50R. It has the three up three speed transmission. But just recently first get makes a really loud clicking sound. But only third gear. I'm just curious as to what that is and am wondering if you would happen to have any idea to what it is? I'm assuming a tooth is broken or damaged? I was also wondering how much you think just the replacement part would cost? If you could help me that would be great. Thank you very much!!
Well I can guarantee they are not gone. It wouldn't do anything remotely close to shifting gears if they were missing. Before splitting the case to replace the pins, make sure that the shift star screw hasn't loosened up. When I assemble engines, I like to make sure the threads are dry of any oil then use a bit of blue LocTite to keep the shift star from loosening. When that is loose it can cause all sorts of weird shifting issues.
Sometimes the bolt holding the shift star loosens up and causes weird shifting problems. If you're lucky you can just tighten it and it'll be fine. If you have it out entirely it's a good idea to use blue Loctite on that bolt. If that's not the problem you probably have a bent fork. The shift pins don't wear often but it's a possibility as well.
ok i took apart the bottom end, didn't split it but jus took off the clutch and all to get to the shifting lever and star and came across the what you called "detent arm", the spring loaded arm with the wheel, was snaped in half. i have been trying to look for the part everywhere online and cant find a thing, if you have a part number and probably an estimate on how much it will cost i would be greatly thankfull.
Hello Alex. The issue I am having with my 1980 CT70 is that the shift star shaft is jammed up, it cannot rotate at all. This seems to be intermittent where it shifts properly. Do you have any ideas as to the cause? Is this likely to require splitting the case?
It could be a few different things. A heavy duty clutch will make shifting harder. Bent shift forks, a bent shift shaft, or a mis-adjusted clutch could also cause the problem. Only way to find out is to tear the motor apart.
Great job! I will say I have a Honda 110 atc and those are a pain to put back together correctly. We know how to do it, its just trying to have it in order. Great demonstration.
Great video that's easy to follow and understand. One small suggestion, perhaps... if you were to make another or redo this video, use a small tripod. Other than that, keep up the good work. :)
hi there mate seen your videos on here about these engins well can you answer a question my son as a py90cc engine and it as 4 gears which are up well I took the caseing off the other day to renew the kick start spring and I think I have done somethink to the gears a the engine makes a knocking sound when the bike is tiking over and when I push the bike any answes on this , and I like the videos on these engines too
I have Honda Dax, 3 gears. I`ve got a problem - it`s difficult to switch on and off gears and when I`m slowing down - engine left in gear, and turn it off itself. When it comes on again, it is out of the velocity and moving normally. Sometimes when I put in gear - it turns off. What do you think the problem is- whether it's the clutch, gears ....? I'm sorry for bad English, I write from Serbia. Thanks in advance!
My original thought was it was binding on the kickstarter gear so i installed the ratchet spring and retainer and i still get the same symptom. Any gear, it will bind slightly and then i have to turn kind of hard and it will slip and continue to spin the shafts. I had the same issue during my first attempt at assembly and i put the whole motor together. Motor ran great but as soon as i started to shift the gears started to grind.
I just purchased a 2004 CRF 50 that is stuck in what seems to be Neutral. The bike runs fine ,but will not go into any gear. What do you think the prob is???? any help would be appreciated !!!
I set idle and the same happens. Can you explain to me how to tune the clutch to work correctly? I know it's hard to explain, but do you have a video at UA-cam where you explain something like that? Thank you in advance!
yo man just wanted to say cool video, although there are some imprecisions, for the thre speed, there is also the shift pattern: 1-n-2-3 shifting down, from 1st to neutral to 2nd to third, which was used on the honda c50
Hey Alex i need some help on my 1976 z50 . Engine works but it wont shift into gear. like there is no clicking noise that i would hear to know im in gear. Gears used to work but i dont know what happened. The gear shifter moves up and down. Any ideas?
It's not supposed to be difficult. It is normally like butter. I told you the different things that can cause it. It is not possible to tell which is the cause without taking it apart.
I was hoping to have some idea before I did that cuz it is possible to pull if apart and not have the cash to fix it right away...it doesn't seem like it should be that hard to shift, like it hurts the top of my foot if I am wearing shoes
im in the middle of doing it. i found the arm that picks a gear is snapped. but i cant take out the bolts off of the clutch. how did u take out the clutch bolts. in order to get to that arm
i couldn't quite understand what is happenning here but i am a kenisthetic lerner if u havent herd of it i have to do it to clearly undrstand. i have my motor poulled right now for some head work i was wondering if i just took the right side cover off if anthing would spring anywhere like a recoil starter because i want to see for myself but i will say nevermind if things will come bouncing out and everything will fall apart?
It`s such a great system on the Honda C cub 90 , I know it`s a high fuel economic ratio set up, So it`s slow going up hills, But it works so well, The anti thrash nature the gearbox combined with the auto clutch, And the nicely tuned engine, Make it a reliable and easy to ride machine, Just don`t change down from top speed ! Or your blow the spark plug out the engine !
alex im i have a problem with my 96 z50, it will kick over pretty well when cold, when it warms up and been riding it, and you go and try and start it, there is nothing when you kick it over just kicks over with no compression, well i know for a fact the piston is not moving. let it cool down and it will start again. i wondering if you think the valves need to be replaced??
I doubt it is a problem with anything in the top end of the engine. I'm willing to bet it's the clutch. Adjust the clutch as shown in my video "How to Adjust a Honda 50/70 Clutch." If the problem persists then the clutch plates and springs should be replaced but that is unlikely.
+TheAlexManVideos if what he said isnt working u will probably need to replace the piston or sleeve when it heats up the sleeve will expand and loose compression then when it cools it shrinks back to a normal size there for giving it compresion
ok i have a honda z50rp idk if this video pertains to but heres whats going wrong, i think my bike is stuck in 3 gear because when i press down on it, it stops and clicks jus like in the video but when i try to put it in 2, 1, or even neutral its not shifting. its like its not catching and shifting down. oh and dont you have to be in neutral to even start it?
This is why new engines must be assembled with oil/assembly lube, but you don't have to tear down your engine and lube it every time you want to start it.
so i have a 110cc pit bike it has 4 speeds all down so when im in 4 which i all the way down i can shift down one more gear and b back in neutral without having to go all the way back up the gears so is my transmission am rotary shift?
hi , i have a daytona sprinter , its like a honda innova but by a greek brand , its the same set up , and my gear lever is jammed in second won't move a bit , what should i do ?
I was assembling my 3 speed xr 70 and it won’t shift right? It goes into first and that’s it it won’t go into any other gears the transmission is all correct is it somthing too do with the shifter assembly
Did you have the cases apart before this problem happened? Did you disassemble the transmission at all? You say the transmission is all correct, but obviously something is off if it doesn't shift. Double check your work. I can't tell you what you put together wrong.
when my motors in neutral and im rolling the wheel, it clicks as if its catching first gear just slightly. the wheel breaks through the catch but it cant be good. I cant figure out the source...
so sometimes on my 4speed just like the one in this vid when i accidentally "half shift" it makes a grinding sound. i thought it was the gears grinding but now i see it must be the dogs?
Without seeing it or having worked on it myself, I can't tell you what is broken or what you did wrong. If it didn't do it before, I can tell you that you probably assembled something wrong. Take it apart and find your mistake.
i learnt 2 things from this.first thing, If i had a transmission like this i could rapidly change gears without clutching and do no damage to gears. secondly, the guy in this video is very clumsy.
the gerars inside might be compleatley screwed,or a tooth or pin knocked off and jammed up. you will definitley need to split the case. but wait for alex's reply. he has a little more experience than me.
Sucks, gotta wait then...but I have the carb to rebuild, tube to replace, cleaning and to pain everything, get better plastics, check the valves and timing...gotta wait for parts
It's on a curved spline, sort of like a bendix on a car starter. When the kickstarter returns to the up position, it rotates backward and the gear disengages the transmission. The other thing that could happen is if the engine starts it will apply torque in the opposite direction which will also disengage the starter gear.
thanks for trying, but the lack of a properly held camera drove me to distraction. Use a camera stand/tripod/stick with gaffer tape, anything. But I'm sure you've learnt that in the last 7 years (One should hope, anyway)
Buy yourself a manual and be methodical with your diagnosis. Keep parts labeled and organized so you can reassemble the motor correctly. No point in trying to fix something only to make it worse.
so what everybody knows i am from greece and i am servicing my moped and always changing crankshaft becayse i destroy them at the street race its too many cc
You explained things clearly, but the explanation was made confusing because nothing was working for you the way you expected. I still managed to follow along, though, so cool. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I've been wondering how these things work.

Once the bolts are all out, lay the motor on the ignition side and pull the clutch side case half off.
You will need to remove the clutch cover to check the shift linkage and look for damage or problems.
Do you mean pins? If so, yes, they can wear out. If they have any visible ridge they are worn. They can be replaced. New ones are cheap.
Both of those motions move the shifter in the same direction.
Phenomenal video! Now I understand how my bike's engine works!

Its weird a also have a Honda Dax but I need to pull the thingy to shift up and push to shift down, is this normal?
Sorry if it is a noobie question.

What side did you take off to get to the gears?
But you showed the part that keeps the ratchet arm in place as a bolt on. It used to be part of the drum and not removable. I broke one learning...
Remove the clutch cover on the right side of the bike and look for damage or loose parts.

Oh, interesting. I guess I don't know about bikes that old. Thanks for letting me know.
wonderful
kursus mekanik motor
Very clear thank you!
Mine won’t go into gear. Would I need a new shift star ? Or a new detent spring? Both ? Help please
You need to take it apart and find what's broken or out of place. The internet can't fix your bike.
ok i have a honda z50rp idk if this video pertains to but heres whats going wrong, i think my bike is stuck in 3 gear because when i press down on it, it stops and clicks jus like in the video but when i try to put it in 2, 1, or even neutral its not shifting. its like its not catching and shifting down.

This is why new engines must be assembled with oil/assembly lube, but you don't have to tear down your engine and lube it every time you want to start it.
Great job explaining
so i have a 110cc pit bike it has 4 speeds all down so when im in 4 which i all the way down i can shift down one more gear and b back in neutral without having to go all the way back up the gears so is my transmission am rotary shift?
hi , i have a daytona sprinter , its like a honda innova but by a greek brand , its the same set up , and my gear lever is jammed in second won't move a bit , what should i do ?
what are your qualifications sir!? Also you were pretty clumsy in this vid...
I was assembling my 3 speed xr 70 and it won’t shift right? It goes into first and that’s it it won’t go into any other gears the transmission is all correct is it somthing too do with the shifter assembly

I got her shifting waiting on a carb I have hopefully it all goes good
on my xr 70 it ticks consistently in first gear do you know what that might be, im thinking a chipped gear
when my motors in neutral and im rolling the wheel, it clicks as if its catching first gear just slightly. the wheel breaks through the catch but it cant be good. I cant figure out the source...
wheres the clutch left or right of the engine?
so sometimes on my 4speed just like the one in this vid when i accidentally "half shift" it makes a grinding sound. i thought it was the gears grinding but now i see it must be the dogs?
Thanks again, great vids
how does it work when my first gear is down and rest is up? i have 6 gears
Without seeing it or having worked on it myself, I can't tell you what is broken or what you did wrong. If it didn't do it before, I can tell you that you probably assembled something wrong. Take it apart and find your mistake.
Search my videos for How to Adjust a Honda 50/70 Clutch.
i learnt 2 things from this.first thing, If i had a transmission like this i could rapidly change gears without clutching and do no damage to gears. secondly, the guy in this video is very clumsy.
Does anyone know how to change gear on a Honda C90? Really confused about how to use the toe and heal levers to change up and down
well think the guy that invented the gearbox just think how he thought :o he must been a hell of a smart ass :D
wow...
moped
really impressive.
the gerars inside might be compleatley screwed,or a tooth or pin knocked off and jammed up. you will definitley need to split the case. but wait for alex's reply. he has a little more experience than me.
Finally now know how to put it into neutral
Sucks, gotta wait then...but I have the carb to rebuild, tube to replace, cleaning and to pain everything, get better plastics, check the valves and timing...gotta wait for parts
how do i adjust the rev on my honda c50? it has a high rev in neutral
can the pines where out ? and can u replace them ?
can you please tell me the exact shift pattern for the ct70 that shift down to go up in gears???
Alayshia Williams 3 down
How the kickstart won't start spinning??
It's on a curved spline, sort of like a bendix on a car starter. When the kickstarter returns to the up position, it rotates backward and the gear disengages the transmission. The other thing that could happen is if the engine starts it will apply torque in the opposite direction which will also disengage the starter gear.
Great Job.
thanks for trying, but the lack of a properly held camera drove me to distraction.
No point in trying to fix something only to make it worse.
cool beans dude.
