Ibanez IC520V-BS Iceman
- Okoume body (mislabelled as mahogany on certain websites, hence why I stated incorrectly in the video)
- Set Okoume neck
- Jatoba Fretboard
- 22 frets
- Dimarzio Tone Zone (bridge) and Air Norton (neck) Humbuckers
- Tight-Tune bridge and tailpiece
Please like and subscribe. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding the instrument or the video, please leave a comment.
I always thought this was Ibanez’ most original body-shape. I believe the RG is their most popular, but it’s clearly a Strat-inspired guitar. This doesn’t look like anything else, and that’s why I like it.
Icemans are a weird hybrid cross between a Les Paul and an Explorer. It's incredible.
I like it too but I don't like the input sitting on the front of the guitar that much to be honest.
@Russian Account I see I don't really do that though. Either way To each their own. The only guitars I'm not bothered with the input being on top, are flying V's and Dean's ML to be honest. I just prefere my input jacks on the side of the instrument.
les paul scale and set neck. more of a strange shape les paul or les paul studio. Some of the cheap ones are bolt on? Some of the cheap everything is bolt on, though.
@@Rouwiinator just get a chair ffs
Ever since I saw my man Daron playing one of these I've always wanted one, but with a trem
That’s why I’m here lol
The songs you've been creating for your demos have been especially badass lately.
They’ve truly been next level
I’d love to hear them compiled into an ep or at least uploaded to a music streaming service such as bandcamp
Love icemans. those things sound killer with dactivators
mykindom666 Sam Totman setup, right there!
That was some inspired riffing man! Your mixes have definitely made a great leap in improvement! Love watching your review videos man.
I really love that intro theme ,it's really my thing. Congrats Arnold!
good review. I agree. thank you for your review.
I've gotta say, your tone is as good as it's ever been since you got that maxwatt, everything sounds so full and clear
That Hiwatt + your picking hand sounds brutal, your tones now sound incredible
Yeah, the Hiwatt is bombin, dude. Wasn't even on my radar til you got it. Love that thing.
That guitar demo sounds great man. Love the dimarzio's
That tuning issue sounds like a bad nut and not bad tuners.
Right?
Nut needs nut butter from stewmac from what he is describing it sounds like the strings is getting bound up in the nuts grooves
Great video,sweet guitar,love the Hiwatt
Great job!! Killer song
Great Guitar, great Sound and by the way I like your fridge!
I have to get one!!
Awesome vids man
great playing great info and great presentation. (and a great guitar.)
The only place you can get them is on the used market. For some reason, you can't get them at any retail stores.
They have been out of production for a while and havent even made them in japan forever. Wish they would make them a comeback for the prestige line.
Cool demo song! Now I need to go and try one.
The tuning problem is not the tuners. That is a nut issue.
He bends the strings hard too 🔥⚡️
They have always been my fav. ibanez (not an ibanez fan usually) . Very overlooked axe
Yeah man me too. Not necessarily my favorite Ibanez but I’ve always wanted one. Nobody ever mentions these for some reason.
Great review. Unfortunately I found it years to late, always wanted a vintage looking Iceman, didn't know they actually did a affordable reissue 🤷🏼♂️
Good review!
that djent is virgins shirt is pretty hilarious. i don't necessarily dislike djent but whatever. lol. Also that tone is sick.
The tuning issue you're describing likely is not an issue with the tuning machines, although I'm sure you're correct in describing the tuners as that they could be better. What is likely happening is the string is binding in the nut just enough to resist the tension of the tuner as you are raising the pitch. Tension increases until that tension exceeds the resistance to moving through the nut slot, and then it reacts quite violently, much like what happens in a fault line between two tectonic plates, where tension builds and builds until tension exceeds the resistance to movement and BANG! The nut could be such that the slots are cut to narrow, too narrow at the bottom, or the surface of that slot is rough and there is too much friction between the string and the nut. If this is the case, that can easily be solved by putting some very fine sandpaper around a string that is significantly smaller than the string that goes through that slot. QUICKLY run the fine sandpaper through that slot a few times with very light pressure and it will clean that surface up. The slot can be widened this way also, or even deepened this way, sometimes unintentionally, so don't be aggressive when doing this. Then that nut slot can be lubricated with something as simple as the graphite in a pencil lead.
As soon as I saw the notification I had to click instantly, I wish Ibanez would make more iceman models or just bring back the ict700 and the ic507. Also they could bring back the xiphos, those were badass!
Nice looking top….nice playing too dude
Everything Ibanez makes is extremely playable…one of the nicest guitars I have is a $300 Ibanez artwood acoustic, solid mahogany, grovers, bone nut, open pore finish…thing has crazy resonance….awesome for blues, fingerstyle
Very good review of the beverage at the end, and an even better review of the Ibanez. Very much an improvement in communicating the descriptions, the specifications, your impressions of the instrument, its aesthetics, its playability, its build quality, and this while maintaining a conciseness, and resisting the temptation to indulge in excessive verbosity (something I struggle with myself, as the previous sentence illustrates quite nicely).
I very much did appreciate the information included in the description below the video, where you correct yourself on the body material and neck material of Okume for both, rather than mahogany for both.
If you hear the differences between various woods used for the construction of a guitar or a base, you will hear some differences between Okume and Mahogany.
If you have absolutely zero belief in different woods having any effect on the tone or dynamics or any sonnic or audible characteristics of an electric guitar or bass, then this will sound like 2 DiMarzio pickups in an Ibanez guitar.
Regardless, an Ibanez guitar I'd love to get my hands on.
BTW, what is Ibanez' position on trademarks and trademarks specifically regarding the body shape?
I have one. I have no complaints at all and I still have the stock tuners. I wasnt a fan of the bridge pick up so I switched it out. With a proper set up, it sings.
Enjoyed the review! Even if it's in the lower price range, if it's inspiring to play, that is a compliment! Love the dark vintage burst. Also at that price range, upgrading the tuners and bridge wouldn't really break the bank (well, depending on the individuals viewpoint).
The lead guitarists for Earth,Wind and Fire had a Iceman that same color..There's footage of him playing it on a old Oakland Coliseum concert during "Way Of The World"..Beautiful axe
Hey Arnold, thanks for a great review, as usual. I have RGMS7 which is kinda close to this model in its class (Indonesian made, same tuning machines and so on) and I was also shocked with how the thing sounds despite the minor issues with the build quality. Very resonant and gives shit ton of metal even with stock pickups.
This is one of my bucketlist guitars. Hope to play one someday!
They’re not made anymore.
@@wallclock4648 doesn’t mean they can’t be found in the wild
@@musicshade9049 true true. Wish these were in production
Arnold, your reviews are a breath of fresh air, your true ,no bullshit, you tell it like it is,to many of these other guys give great reviews to every guitar they show, you don't,thank you for that
Some of my buddies use clear fingernail polish on the bridges personally I use loc lock tight the blue if i remember correctly keeps everything good and doesn't let things move around
great intro song as per usual :)
I'm not going to lie, I would kill for an all matte black, full cream binding, black hardware, covered pickup, edge lo-pro equipped, reverse headstock Iceman... Shame Ibanez isn't putting any out at the moment.
@@kimhoffmannandersen5477 :)
and made in japan
Revisiting this video since i picked up a black iceman with cream binding but a original edge instead of a lo pro made in japan. I think im done playing RGs
@@larsheuker how tf
Hey! Arnold cool demo of the Iceman. I own a 78/79 Ibanez Iceman I love it, I am glad you did this video demo on the guitar. Ibanez does need to step up with their quality control and modernized some of their guitars as well, they should change the LP style bridge with a different type of bridge, I would put a Kahler bridge.
I love your unbiased reviews! If you could possibly review these instruments and pedals in the future, I would truly love it.
Ibanez srms805 or Ibanez srms806
ESP LTD B-1005
Darkglass Microtubes B7K Ultra V2 Bass Preamp Pedal
(assuming the ltd youre talking about is the multi-scale one) the ibanez is kinda a waste of money, the fanning isnt extreme enough; their idea of making a multiscale bass that can use normal strings kinda defeats the purpose of going multiscale....it just feels like a marketing strategy :L
imo you'd be much better saving up a bit more and getting either the esp multiscale bass or a dingwall combustion, yea the string are a bit harder to find, but they're worth it!
hope this is in some way helpful
That sounds killer.
Man, its screaming for acid bath riffs
Yesssss
Ive own this guitar for years!!! Damn it's such a amazing guitar 🤘🏿😈
I wish they made more icemans
I would love a iceman with a floating floyd rose bridge and one emg81, one volume and no tone
That's essentially what Sam Totman has
Then take any stm series
Recently picked up a japenese iceman with a original edge trem (which are almost better than the floyd roses) super rare though! Id advise against the STM since none of them are made in japan.
Good song bro! 👊😉
Nice real and true review. So, locking runners are almost standard on all mid to high end Ibanez guitar, probably they can start at this point and make a Premium to Presrige Iceman and Fireman. The body shape of those guitar is amazing, so Rock to Metal core. Greetings from a Venezuelan living in Uruguay now. Cheers! 🍻 🤘😎🤘
We have very similar taste in guitars and beer😂, cheers and thanks for the great review!
I'd say you're getting objectively better tones these days haha. That demo track slaps. What did you use for that?
Pariah VS Gear the Hiwatt
"slaps"
@@ArnoldPlaysGuitar - Hiwatt does sound killer in the demo.
I got one and I FUCKING LOVE IT! It really is a great guitar!
I was just actually looking for an iceman with reversed headstock ! :))) There is one made in 2008.I just like reversed headstocks on any guitsar
I still want that grote headless you had lol since you did that review ive wanted to get one
Do you still have it?
Hot damn those dimarzios sound fantastic! Definitely not a fan of the bridge or tuners though. Ibanez Iceman was the first guitar I ever owned at age 10. It was the gloss black one with the white body binding and I really wish I would have kept it. Many nights in my bedroom jamming some SOAD. Love these guitars.
The Iceman is probably my favorite unconventional guitar shape. I would kill for a MIJ 7 string version like a prestige version of Vogg's.
Beer is good, beer is good, beer is good. and stuff.
Lets go drive a car
guitar sounds killer bro
I want this guitar soooo badly! I can’t find it anywhere! I do realize it’s discontinued but even the used market has nothing! If you ever want to sell it let me know ;) great video dude. Definitely subscribing and hoping to see more of this guitar! Cheers and great beer choice.
body burst colors look fantastic! not my type of shape tho.
I appreciate your thorough reviews. Could you get your hands on a Cort X500 for review?
I know you touch on it sometimes, but I, personally, would like to hear the retail price on every guitar right off when you go over the specs the specs. I know I could just look it it up, I just feel like it would put the whole review into perspective. Like, this instrument cost this much, and this is what you can expect for your money.
How come these aren't commercially available right now?
I miss the bone/ brass nut found in 80 model iceman’s!
I wish Ibanez would bring back the Iceman in the premium line up . Give me one in the sparkle green like J’s with or without the stars and the old school harmonica bridge.
I used to have the 1st edition of the Iceman ,,it kinda looked cool right handed but I thought it looked cooler flipped to left.I don't remember what pickups were in it but it was huge.
Actually i want an iceman with a reverse in line headstock and neck through joint lmao but i do want the pickup selector to be the same
Awesome playing and good, no bullsh*t review! I was wondering: have you ever had the chance of playing the new IC420 Iceman?
Get some gotoh tuners on it or what u plan on replacing with
LOl I like the Iceman with a inline tuners :)
U have a chance to play any the new axion label guitars since its supposed to be better affordable line thats better than iron label
Michael Martinez i have played two. Fretwork sucks. The multiscale one that everyone complains about regarding the neutral fret being at the 12th...it’s completely a non-issue.
What is the intro song?
I had an ic500 and while it sounded great the neck dive was awful. I moved the front strap button around a few spot and it just never felt right so I traded it for an explorer
My IC300 nose dives. Does this nose dive?
I hate the les Paul setup. Also hate the input jack on the front
That hiwatt makes Arnold sound better than the Kemper.
I've wanted an iceman since i was 11 and saw daron malakian with one ill be getting a job soon and hopefully have the money to buy my dream guitar
That guitar is niiiiice
I own a 2004-2007 IC400 which is basically this guitar but better. I did replace the stock Ibanez pick ups for the EMG 81/85 set. I bought it back in 2005 and I would never sell it. Easily the best guitar I have ever owned and has always been a blast to play. Those were made in Ibanez's Korean factory which I would argue has been putting out far better quality axes over their Indonesian counterparts. I have never had any issues with tuning stability, etc and I just can't get use to the cable jack position on this IC520. I would have bought one if it wasn't for the cable jack on top.
murdersification I have the ic400 to but with stock pickups, how did u put actives in?
@@michaelpar4765 pretty much all active pickup sets come with great installation instructions but I'm also an electronics technician by trade so I have plenty of experience with guitar modifications.
Also have the ic400, and just got a hondo iceman copy.
50 seconds in had me fucking NUTTING
I’m so into that body shape!
3x3 head stock is the only way to go on any iceman forsure.
Hello! I own the same guitar (ibanez ic520), I have a big problem, I can't set it in standard D tuning, the bridge saddles don't allow me to do the intonation because they don't give me any margin of adjustment.
How is it possible that this guitar could not be lowered in tuning ???
Have you tried a different string gauge?
Just something about them that sounds “off” my friend owns this model and soloing is great but as far as the chunky power chords it’s all harsh too end without the body... and not the good way like a strat. I’ll have to do my own review...
How did you like the Tone Zone in this?
Loved it. I honestly really like the Tone Zone. Probably putting one into the Charvel soon.
@@ArnoldPlaysGuitar glad to hear. Just ordered that same setup myself for my SG. Thanks for responding.
I’d do more than kill for a prestige hardtail of this
i love this guitar i live in the uk anyone know where i could get one
Sanctuary - Die for my Sins
\m/ \m/
Please review ltd ex 200
There's two different Gibson neck shapes. Fat 50's and almost as skinny as an Ibanez RG 60's neck. A Les Paul have either. Just a FYI
Only thing that would make it look better would be the classic logo, imo.
Why no lefty yet?
Die for my sins riff= deadly
Is that a mark morton on the wall? What do u think about that?
Timothy Krier that’s my Framus Television, actually...and it’s one of my faves. The craftsmanship and attention to detail is ridiculous!
@@ArnoldPlaysGuitar oh nice. Yea I love the shape it's like a sleeper. I'll check to see if u have a review. Thanks
Yo do couple vids using my Hondo Iceman and my IC400. Hit up Bryson he'll grab the guitars.
Don’t beat yourself up😂, my iceman ic400 also leans forward when I play standing up
Michael Par had the same issue & moved the screw to the top edge forward of the 3 way switch ! Nice to hear I wasn’t the only one with that issue !
Great review. Arnold definitely appears more than a bit drunk during the review.
Holy fucking shit could your T-shirt game be anymore on point?
We used to have one. Loved playing it until my dumbass brother brought it to a concert where it was stolen. I miss this guitar
What's with the grave digger fingernails dude? This guitar looks awesome and sounds pretty good.
Now that you mention it...A reverse in-line headstock would look sick on an iceman.
id love to see a review on tthe iron label iceman 7 string as well. just found this channel and im hooked
Anyone else watching this at like 4:50 am?
yup, at work lol
well, 350 here but you get the idea
