Not new to art-my major in college and masters program. You are amazing! Information so complete and varied. You have helped me enter this gelli field. Never knew it would enrapture me. Thank you and keep the videos coming.
Oh, my! D'you know how some people spend hours on end just watching videos of puppies and kittens? Well... I have been spending hours and hours, and more hours just watching Your videos!! I really cannot even find the words, it's like there is no adjective that might actually fit the part to describe it, you, your art -you get it, right? Thank you may just not be enough but... THANK YOU!!!!!!! 🏆
I love all he does with a jelly plate…totally amazing how he shows methods I’d never think about doing. But, hey…don’t knock watching kitty and doggy videos..not for hours and hours, though…LOL. I get a lot of inspiration for drawing them….colors, textures, movement, etc. Gonna see how it goes with embossing and the crayon. 😊
Hi there both, I had compositions from graphic novels in my mind. Would love to do a video on some of the novels but I'd blow all my copyright strikes in one hit!!!!
If you trace the image out on the back of the emboss sheet beforehand with oil pastel or crayon, then emboss as normal with a sheet of paper underneath, you get a second (semi-embossed) copy of the image with a different resist. I've had some really good results with double printing/overlaying the same image.
Who knew that the unopened gel plate in my drawer could achieve so much with so little? And I love that it is so 'low-tech'. This is one rabbit hole I could disappear down for a very long (possibly obsessive) time. Utterly inspiring for an art 'voyeur' to get hands-on: thanks for the ride!
Thank you thank you!! Two years ago I discovered the gel plate and started watching every video I could find to learn how to use it. While I have learned a LOT from you and all the other fantastic gel plate artists out there, I love how different your art is from everyone else's - instead of showing us how to use the gel plate, you show us all the different ways we can incorporate other artistic techniques to create prints with the gel plate. Years ago as a graphic design major in college, I took a Surface Design art class, which I absolutely loved, and your videos remind me of that class, but instead of exploring cyanotypes, collage, encaustic, etc, you're taking a deep dive into the amazing gel plate. Most of the time I like to watch your videos and follow along with my gel plate. This embossing technique worked so well for a portrait of my sister's dog that I'm doing it for all of our family's dogs! I want to thank you for one other thing - I had been using a homemade plate with inexpensive paint for the past 2 years and my image transfer results were so-so. Not great. (except for the embossing prints) Two weeks ago I finally bought my first Gelli plate and got much better results. But then I noticed you use Amsterdam paints so back to the store I went to buy a few tubes of that brand. I know most gel plate artists say brands don't matter, but this made a gigantic difference for me. It's so creamy and doesn't dry as quickly on the plate. Two days ago, I bought a second, larger plate and more Amsterdam paint and since then I have been doing nothing but pulling gel prints and getting amazing results! I can't wait to re-watch all of your videos to try each technique with my new paints & plates.
Lovely to know the videos have helped you, thanks for sharing that. I love mixed media so it was natural for me to find ways to incorporate the gel plate once I'd discovered it. A shop bought plate and amsterdam paint should help you no end, it will just be about perfecting techniques now!!!!
Thank you so much for this demo! I have tried this technique before with LACKLUSTER results. Your series of images that show the steps, the adjustments to make and "tricks" like using the book, along with all your methods of troubleshooting are most helpful! An attendee to my mixed media class shared this with me today, and I am very glad to have witnessed it.
Great thank you for sharing. I have had several attempts using laser prints of my silhouette photos with minimal success, I think this approach will prove successful. Cheers
I tried this last night, a simple line drawing of a sumo wrestler, and it worked brilliantly. I did some painting directly onto the plate which worked 'kinda' well, but for the fact that my gel elf plate mysteriously was resisting the paint. Not sure if it was residue from the baby wipe or what, it's new to me. Thanks for linking me to this one!
Really nice job with this technique! Also, a reminder of a couple of things, for me. First, this is a great demonstration of how much character of its own a printmaking technique confers. Unlike many (myself most definitely included), your drawings are always lovely. However, even for those of us with less-highly developed drawing skills, printmaking processes seem almost always to add a level of presence and liveliness to imagery. It's odd that simplifying the more spontaneous line quality of a sketch, as this embossing technique does, should somehow make the line /more/ engaging, but it surely seems to, to my eye. The other thing this video reminds me about is the value of drawing mundane items. I always feel like, "Why bother? Does the world really need another drawing of a pencil jar? And for that matter, does it /need/ another drawing of anything?" The result is that I don't draw the pencil jar, or anything else. This is an ongoing debate within me, at a 20,000-foot view. But when I see your drawings, they are evocative of something more than the existence and likeness of the objects you draw. There's something almost haunting in them. Another reason to draw such items, of course, is that I'd at least be /drawing/. Drawing anything sharpens observation and awareness. It also sharpens drawing skill, as well, which could come in handy if I ever do reconcile that inner debate and decide that there is something worth my taking the time to draw. Thanks for the reminders of why it's worth doing! (And sorry for the melancholy. The sun is south, the days are short, the clouds dense.)
Hi maybe look at it another way, don't draw/paint for the value of the finished piece do it for the value of the experience itself. You do not want to focus or rush so much towards your destination that you do not enjoy the journey. Have fun practicing.
@@hakantacrafter813 Thanks for the encouragement. The central problem for me, I fear, is that I really don't enjoy drawing. ...Except, maybe, in the context of taking a class. And then, it's not every session. But it's such a foundational skill, I feel I ought to do more of it. I know that when I've had to do a lot of it, for classes, I got a lot better. But it never feels like play. It's almost always drudgery, with occasional highs when I have a good day. And the "good day" is defined by the results I produce. It's a bit of a dilemma.
What a good reminder! I have said virtually these same things to myself… also, it feels mundane to draw the mundane. You’ve helped to remind me that it is about the process, not the product. Thank you!🎉
really interesting comments. everyday items, I feel, are amazing for drawing and speak so much about out little rituals and connections. for me, objects aren't mundane because of this. i touched on it briefly in the vid, but I think cropping tightly furthers the impact and intrigue and can add so much narrative too. i totally understand your reluctance to draw. it takes discipline to keep up practice even for me and I LOVE drawing! its hard to not feel pressure on an outcome so maybe just focus on time limited continuous line stuff where expectations are lower but you are still looking and analysing. i'm a real advocate of drawing from memory and imagination too - you see your mistakes, of course, but can excuse them because you weren't looking at something!!!!!
@@yeatesmakes great points! I also love blind contour because often the images become somewhat whimsical. A favorite of mine, partly because it also excuses mistakes and actually really celebrates and even exaggerates them!
I appreciate that you are working somewhat slowly, showing goofs, working with goofs, sharing your experiments and narrating so clearly. I'm new to using gel plate printmaking and can't wait to try this! One thing I tried recently was soap as a resist. It was pretty good. I think making sure not to apply too much pressure to transfer is where I need to play some more.
Thanks for the video, I just did this with a simple sketch of a scallop shell, and it worked flawlessly. I haven't done any geli printing for months, and really never felt like I "got it". Till today. Cheers!
Amazing! I'm simply amazed by your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your experience 🥰 I really underestimated the usefulness of a gelli plate before seeing your videos. Thank again and happy art making to you! ✨️
Hi there, thanks for the kind message. The gel plate definitely has it's limits if you are coming at it from an etching / intaglio point of view but this technique show you can use it for something near and that offers a character of its own. For mono printing at home, its amazing!
Hi Yeayes, thank you so much for all the tutorials, for sharing your skills, your creativity. I love all you do. I cannot stop watching your videos. I think, I'm getting Adicted to you 😊🥰
So fun and love the book weight. I use a book for most of my transfers after giving a good rub. It helps me to leave the piece alone for a while. I have found that a good art history book works better than a history of civilization. Must be the subject matter.😊
One of these days I'm going to have to sit down with your vidoes and try these things. My art group has tried several times to do the magazine and copy resist techniques and we were met with utter failure.
Success depens on so many things, paint, time, pressure, room conditions, paper, kind of magazine....and so on. I reconized that paint plays a big part in succeeding. Don't give up trying, I had already little successful moments and it is fun to explore the materials. Next try is combinding "kitchen letographie" (there are videos on youtube, embossed imgages on aluminium foil or inside of tetra packs) with the gelli plate

Fantastic demo, just seeing you work on the various iterations helps a lot. I love this technique. Particularly like the shoes and the way you are reframing so the whole object is not seen. I am using buff to pull with as it the white of the paper then becomes another tone. Not much done today as I have to wait till tomorrow to get a decent black. Was that neocolor 1 you were putting the tones in with? Also admired your continuous line drawing, nice skill which I have never had. Thanks again.
Thank you so much I really really enjoyed watching you experiment with your sketches and the Gelli plate….. great result’s and so interesting too. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Dear Mark, Thanks for this great video. inspiring and instructive. Always feels like a present !! Have a good end of year and best wishes for the year to come, good health for you and family and hopeful, lots of creative pleasure !
luvin' your style and well explained vids. Super entertaining and educational. Good to see some originality out there with these gel plate ctyles. Go you!!
Love how these 2 technics work together! Looking fwd to playing around with these on my gel plate. I’ve tried embossing with foam stuff and I’ve tried wax resist but this is something else altogether! 😮 Thanks a lot 👌
Hi there, This is a great question / request and i would love to make a video on this. However, I've found all the two types of water based / safe wash relief inks I have tried both stained the plate. This did not affect the plate at all beyond making it much less transparent. As I need the transparency in the approaches I like to use, this was a big factor in steering clear!!!
Thatˋs Right. Cleaning with oel works well. But they donˋt dry properly on the paper. You would also have to have a different approach than with acrylic. I donˋt Reality know with one.Grass Impression work very well, but I donˋt realy care. Talking off a dried layer with a new layer paint as with acrylic does not work. Maybe you feel like trying something out, because the color brilliance is much better and you donˋt have to hurry so much. Greetings from Germany, Ulrike 😊
Thank you so very much for this Video I did really learn a lot. Could you kindly continue to share your experiences. Thank you (sorry for my poor English)

Yeah they're frustrating and can take a lot of trial and effort. Try as many different magazines as you can, glossy ones are best or really old ones.
I've found Vogue magazine good for image transfers and also Spectator mag as well. Must be the printing inks they use.
I’ve had only failures with plain monochrome laser transfers. Not sure what I’m doing wrong. Any tips?

Great as always. Could you not even make a video about safe wash relief inks on a gelliplate? I am sure, we all could learn a lot of this.😊
Hi there, This is a great question / request and i would love to make a video on this.
