16:00 Actually, the start-up sound depends on the game. Some games used different instruments, so that is correct emulation. Y'know, aside from the terrible grainy sound quality.
I found one of these with the firmware update on eBay for under 150 USD, and I must say, they really did fix a lot of the major problems. You can save, sound emulation is better, it remembers when you put the screen into 4:3; it even looks better on the TV! It still isn't perfect, but it's a heck of a lot better. I'm uploading a video on it Thursday.
A shame this has the SNK and Neo Geo name associated with it. The PSP and the Neo Geo Pocket Color will be my way to go for all my Neo Geo portable needs, not this gimped crud

The device itself is actually Linux-based and uses the FB Alpha emulator, and since it's not copy-protected, it's possible to load other games onto it, even some that aren't Neo Geo games. Heck, it's even possible to convert it into a full-fledged linux-based gaming system so that you can put Linux games/emulators on it and use it for other stuff. Also, later revisions of the same handheld replace the internal MicroSD card with a proper Flash chip.

Should probably note that neo geo sued their own contracted company because this thing was, well, you know, sorta shit. They also updated the firmware to fix some of the software issues here as well. I think they added saving as well?
I think one of the things I hated the most about it was that (I think) you had to buy an external "additional games" card outside of the console you're already paying a ton of money for, just to update it. Honestly, it felt like a rip off when I bought it from a local Disc Replay a few years back, and picking it up again after 3 years, it feels even *more* like a ripoff. The arcade stick was nice tho.
+magmaboarder The giant crater at the end of the first stage is also clearly based on an image in Akira. I hesitate to say 'ripped off' since it's an artful reproduction rather than say, a badly digitized image (not uncommon in the 16-bit days); but it is essentially the same artwork.
I would love to see you review Panasonic's real player called the 3DO. It retailed for $799.00!!! After 6 months the price dropped to $699.00. 3 years later it was dead and you could pick one up for $50.00.
To be honest if you want to get this so you can play neo geo games, you may as well just get an emulator for the PC, unless you are like me and must have authenticity, in which case get get an original neo geo.
Despite its flaws it's an attractive looking handheld. I remember seeing NEO GEO and Jaguar advertised everywhere when I was a kid, but I liked my NES.
@@random_an0n No? I was raised in a poor family as a kid as we were stuck on the PS2 from 2000-2012. My dad granted played it more, but honestly when it was 2005-early 2010's. I honestly genuinely was happy with being on PS2. I didn't care about being on the Wii, PS3, or Xbox 360. I played a bit of spore so I also played on PC. Honestly I didn't care at all about graphics as my love of retro gaming started with a mixture of the ps2 collections like Anniversary Collection for Megaman... He liked his NES as. If he was poor at the time.. He would want high quality games regardless of platform. As this is what makes Classic Megaman games special on 4-6 for their time period. As richer customers would play Megaman X, but younger siblings or poorer folks would still get good games for their platforms. The PS2 was no different for me during the 2010's. As Double A video games like " Destroy All Humans! " on the PS2 weren't for Xbox 360 or PS3 gamers, but for people who were stuck on the PS2. Some people stick to an older platform due to what does a new platform mean? You must wait for new video games instead of enjoying the discount deals for older titles. I was on the PS3 in 2013-2016. I didn't give a rat's @$$ about ps4 as... If you were poor, the PS3 offered more features like free online which gave you an immediate reason to play PS3 over Xbox 360. I refused to switch to PS4 as games still released or I could play on PC. I view PC gaming as a more budget friendly platform the older I get. As consoles have the problem of a locked down ecosystem, you can't really stick to one system or easily return to older games unlike on a PC, but also the advancements for graphics are more dictated on who is developing your platform. If you were a PS3 gamer, you knew full well how that can turn out for you. Being a late life generation player isn't that bad, but I view as good. Because you are in the console's developed library years instead of waiting for more and more crap. The comment you made was just dumb
I'm a big Neo Geo fan and have the AES home system as well as a consolized MVS system. Have a sizeable collection of cartridges. Also ran an arcade in the 90s, and some of the cabinets I had were Neo Geo games. I bought the Neo Geo X some months ago, despite some negative reviews online. I think it's a great thing for any Neo Geo fan to have-- especially after the firmware update. It's great as a handheld and the clicky directional pad is exactly like the Neo Geo CD controller that I have. The clicky pad brings a great feel to playing the games and works quite well, and despite being emulated, other handhelds that have Neo Geo emulators can't match that clicky pad. I think it works better as a handheld than as something you plug into a TV. If you want to plug it into a tv, you might as well get a Neo Geo AES or CDZ. What Tommo should have done is just sell the handheld, minus the dock and controller, for a lower price. Maybe more folks would buy it. Still Tommo's effort isn't all that bad and I wish official support continued without the legal issues between them and SNK.
So much wrong with this... Android OS, Need the original Games, Bad compatibility, and realistically it's just an Emulator. It's a bad Idea in honesty it might as well be a multi-cart loader than an emulator if you need the cartridge! Most emulators have a VERY high compatibility rate today and you don't need the original game. Even an Android Mobile is capable of PS1 emulation almost perfectly! I use my WiiU to record all of my Let's plays for retro consoles (As I only have access to HDMI Recording) and using multiple emulators rather than 1 is no big deal... AND it outputs 1080p really nicely!! Developers don't make money from game sales anymore so pirating these games isn't exactly harmful anymore, companies that don't want their games hosted online can still file for removal anyways.
The optimism at the beginning of this video is heartbreaking. It’s like watching a film and at the start the hero and heroine are making plans for the future so you just know they’re gonna eat it by the end.
I really don't understand why so many reviews of this thing are negative. I got one and love it! Now I do admit I have never played a Neo Geo home console and that possibly makes me ignorant of the little inconsistencies. But all in all, I love this thing!
I remember wanting this for for Xmas so very very veeeery much. Seriously, the excitement I had for this was almost childlike (which is a rarity now a days). Glad I wasn't able to get my hands on one because this thing is the biggest disappoint of the year for me (that year being 2013, eh fuck it 2016 too.) You know your stuff Ashens, hats off to ya!
HOLY SHIT! I just looked around ebay and you can get an original AES (imported it's plus about 80$ in the US) for about the same price as this. So if your stuck into wanting the real deal, just type in Neo Geo AES into ebay and you can get it at an OK price.
piewackett But add in the better gameplay and quality. You get what you pay for man, and besides I rather have a good quality and gameplay more then cheap price tag.
Surely it couldn't have been that expensive for them to just reproduce the original Neo-Geo hardware in a smaller scale to fit a handheld. That hardware is very old now, and must be cheap to manufacture.
It's more difficult than it sounds since I'm sure the Neo Geo uses some custom made chips that are no longer in production. Reproducing it perfectly and without any compatibility problems would be challenging and probably require more than off the shelf parts. Still it should be more than just a glorified emulation box considering their asking price.
SeekerLancer Not really actually. With how much farther tech has come since the day of Neo Geos, they could crank something out that acted JUST like one with nearly no effort. But the problem was, that still required SOME effort, and they went the no effort way. The specific chip type doesn't matter really, it all comes down to how much processor there is, and the bio files to run the roms. This COULD have easily just had some actual coding put in to make it behave properly, but they just didn't.
I think the setup costs for manufacturing custom chips start from somewhere up from $20k+ to $1M+ and at low volumes a single chip would be quite expensive, maybe $100+ for just the chip. (Yes, there's no basis for these costs aside from an interest in exotic parts and electronics, never made an asic)
Same rom in a new system, I'm aware, but there's no real way to make this device without it being SOME form of emulation, unless they sat around and rebuilt the roms for these games from the ground up. Which....why would they? I'm just saying they could have done this a LOT better with only slightly more effort.
With the benefit of 6 years of hindsight, this thing is very ironic. It's basically trying to be a Nintendo Switch before Nintendo made one, but it's ALSO trying to be a "mini" console at the same time. What makes this even more ironic is that a whole bunch of Neogeo games have been getting emulated ports TO the Nintendo Switch, so at this point this thing has almost been fully "absorbed" into the Switch as if Nintendo had the idea first.
Imagine it wasn't completely shit, SNK might have actually been able to use it as a springboard for an actual return rather than being a weird license zombie licensing out to idiots.
Sad that the actual company that made the damn machine nearly 20 years ago is forced to emulate their own system, making it ineffective, and getting overtaken by a homebrewn PSP hack. What the hell?
ArmoredSoul1 True, but the PS3 does a little more than just play emulated PS1 games. This Neo Geo X only purpose is to play emulated games, and (from what I've heard) it can't even do that very well.
ArmoredSoul1 What backwards compatibility? The only console in which I can play PS1-3 games on my system was with th 600 dollar 80 GB PS3 I got at launch.....the newer versions ditched the PS1 Compatibility completely.
DeeM10123 I have a slim PS3 and I've played PS1 games on it before, but I've tried PS2 games and they don't work. I'm not sure about the new super slim PS3 though. I don't see why it wouldn't though, it just plays them through emulation.
Christ alive if I could get that joypad clicking on loop I could fall asleep listening to that heavenly microswitch click. I wish I could get a USB controller for my PC that had a stick like that, it would make playing fighting games so much less painful and it'd probably be a lot less unwieldy than a 300 dollar arcade stick.
Surely using an arcade stick at your desk is ideal, as long as you have somewhere to store it when not in use? A solid flat surface to rest it on is ideal. Also, most X360/X1/PS3/PS4 sticks are PC compatible, and not all cost $300. If you play PC on your living room TV then I understand, I hate using those controllers on my lap personally.
it's quite amazing to look back on this video today and realise that the Nintendo switch isn't as revolutionary as people originally thought, the major difference is that the docking system on the switch is easier and probably feels less safe for the unit
Hey thanks for making this video. I know I watched it years late but you just saved me some pain and embarrassment. An acquaintance of mine was trying to sell or trade me this thing and having never heard of it, I was a little wary of making the deal. Glad I held off. Cheers!
£180?? I bought a GCW Zero and a 32GB Micro SD card for less than that, and have among many things, Final Burn Alpha with a set of Neo Geo roms on it! I think it's the fact this is all derived from opensource programs and such that is insulting. If SNK had built their own emulation from the ground up, that accurately recreates the Neo Geo hardware, it might be easier to swallow.
Having owned a Neo Geo arcade cabinet and a Neo Geo Pocket Color, I think this package is amazing despite the criticisms of the reviewer. The main negative, which the reviewer forgot to mention, is the enclosed battery. To each his own, I guess. Thank you for the very detailed review.
This thing might be terrible, but I'll say the build quality is really nice. It reminds me of the iPhone 4/4S (inb4 'hurr iPhones are terrible". Yes, I know, but they're built well). I would want one if they weren't pieces of shit.
***** well, as a person who owned an iPhone 4 for 2 years, I've see one survive a 7 foot fall onto hard wood (granted that's the only time I ever dropped it)
mshesh16 I don't intend to make people mad, but it seems to me like a lot of iPhone owners aren't exactly the type that care about their phone as much as they should. My theory is that the design is actually more durable than a lot of Android phones, but so many iPhone owners are clumsy people who don't respect technology, so they end up breaking it. It probably isn't, but if that's true, I'd hate to see what would happen if all of those people had plastic phones like the Galaxy S4 (I'm not bashing it or anything; I own one and it's great)
Well, I guess you'll be happy SNK dropped these guys like a bad habit. They seem to loathe these as much as you and revoked all licensing and production rights from Tommo.
At least nintendo is good at it. Nintendo: "Hey! You!" Me: "Huh?" Nintendo: "Yes, you! Remember Ocarina of time?" Me: "How could I forget it?!" Nintendo: "Well it's your lucky day! Now you can play it in 3D AND with better graphics!" Me: "OMFG I LOVE YOU NINTENDO"
yeah, it's still better than "here is a game that's half-finished, buggy as hell, and most of it is locked behind a paywall. oh, don't forget to purchase the day 1 DLC."
At first I thought he was being too nitpickity. The handheld looks good for the most part. But the second he pulled out the docking station and it opened up to shove the system inside, I knew why he thought it was so bad. And screen tearing drives me crazy, so I would hate that garbage too. You're right dude. I actually have an SNK collection game for my PSP that I think has all of those games. And it was quite cheap compared to this goofiness. I'll stick with that or if I want a more arcade like experience I'll go ahead and just use MAME on my computer.
1chi TheKilr To be fair, the screen tearing could be simply because they were too stupid to turn v-sync on in FB Alpha's settings/config file. Not entirely sure if it's fixable, so it's still worth complaining about. But It's at least something to blame on the people making the device, and not the emulation itself. Most emulators have an option somewhere to turn v-sync on or off, that fixes the tearing. But since they were nice enough to not give you any kind of settings menu, there's not much you can do about it aside from taking it apart and modifying it with your own emulators and settings.
It's pretty much impossible to find these things for less than $400 USED. It is wild. I never got one back in the day because it was well... kinda crap. I always imagined I'd pick one up second hand for cheap later on but nope, they've *doubled* in price 🤷
Apparently the new Neo Geo X game cards that are coming out next month (with 3 games per card) will have and I quote 'Improved TV aspect ratio, sound quality and are capable of game saves'. Amazon also says that it's a firmware upgrade, so maybe these cards will fix some of the issues with the built in games....but who knows if they actually will, or if these upgrades only count for the actual cards?
I almost bought one of these last XMAS. I spent a good two weeks where I almost bought one several times - I even got as far as completing the order form and then cancelling at the payment page. I am glad I didnt because there are lots of things that would have bugged me had I bought one. Just got an MVS and the money i've spent isnt far off what I could have paid for the X, so really pleased I bought a 'real' MVS. That said, it looks pretty sexy! Subbed btw. Great vid.
I saw this is a EB games store in Australia and yeah they had the same one there for about two months I saw the dust gathering every time I walked in I love SNK but yeah......
I swore I saw one of these sitting around as well somewhere last year, but I can't remember where....either FYE or Retrospct Games (a local handler of old arcade systems)
A couple of things about the video. The handheld itself has a 480×272 resolution, which is the same as the first PSP, and is easily mistaken for 16:9 but isn't. A firmware update in August 2013 improved many aspects of the system: you can now save states in all games, sound quality was drastically improved, as was image quality (v-sync now defaults to ON and scales better via HDMI out), and the arcade stick itself has been updated and is no longer laggy.
Anybody know where to find the after-market d-pad that Stuart has here on his psp? I've had a look around and can only seem to find internal replacement parts. I'd like the one that sticks on the face plate and assists with diagonals etc.
The handheld bit of it is very pretty, and makes me want it. The realities of the device mean I never will. I'd love to see something as pretty as that, and with a nice clicky stick, that was an open emulation machine. I currently use a GPD XD, which is really, really good for emulation, but not quite as pretty.
You're right, this "console" or whatever you wanna call it is a shitty thing. I was so happy when mine arrived and was dissapointed to say the least. I bought a rea AES and sold this piece of shit for 40 bucks just to get rid of it. People buy a used AES from Japan for about 250 and you will not be sorry.
I loved Neo-Geo and Cyber-Lip when I was in my early teens. Cyber-Lip is the side-scrolling shooter that Contra wants to be when it grows up. What was SNK thinking when they made this?
+aspie182 Well, SNK didn't actually make it, Tommo did. SNK just licensed it. SNK was actually so disappointed with what they made that they ordered Tommo to cease manufacturing it and pull all existing stock off shelves, but Tommo resisted and will continue to sell it until the contract ends sometime in late 2016.
I used to buy every issue of C+VG with my pocket money, and they advertised the Neo Geo quite heavily at release. I wanted one so badly to replace my Master System, so I asked my parents to buy it for Christmas. They asked how much it was, and I told them the price in GBP and explained we would have to import one from the UK because they weren't sold in Australia. They laughed quite loudly and I learned a useful lesson about value.
ENunn yeah but it makes the games look absolutely terrible to the point a lot of games become unplayable because the screen is just a mass of stretched blobs
SNK has recently teamed up with DotEmu, which makes me think they're incapable of picking decent business partners when you take this...thing into account. EDIT: Well, as of 2021, this comment aged in all sorts of directions.
Oh my God ............................................. and I was just reading on how Eikichi Kawasaki stood by his company right 'til the end ... and even created PlayMore as backup support for it after it's death ... THANK YOU for uploading this nonetheless!
Sega Sammy and SNK Playmore have both let third party companies create bastardized, weak, cheapo versions of their classic consoles - really bad emulators basically. To be fair the SEGA ones have been FAR worse than this but its still a shame, they could make really good modern reproductions if they just bothered to pay a little bit more money in developing the things (better yet they could do it themselves instead of letting BLAZE or other wankers ruin their legacy!).
Haha, that's cool! It may be time for me to finally realize my childhood dream of owning a Neo Geo Gold. It was the console that my friends and I all longed to own, but knew we never would.
@Rye Sher Yes, IMO they play very well, I believe 'Hamster' is in charge of the ACA Neo-Geo title emulations on switch, and I can confirm that at the very least, from what I've played+compared, Metal Slug+Metal Slug 2 play very well on the system and transfer MUCH better to the big screen than the 'Neo Geo X' even thought of, it goes without saying that the Switch plays the games in portable mode far better as well, but it's also a 'double edged sword' as each ACA title is around $7.00 USD on the shop, so the price adds up quick if you're not paying attention, lol.
@Rye Sher No problem, I'd say that...yeah, given that the original hardware is VERY expensive, with the games being even more expensive+rare, with even the MVS titles starting to skyrocket in price, that yeah it's way above most gamers pay grades, haha...pretty sure SNK knows this as well, hence their 'business decisions in regards to their games, lol. But, If you're interested in looking into the Switch, I can say that the Switch is definitely worth it in my book, and already it has an AMAZING catalogue of games outside of just the SNK ACA titles on offer, BOTW alone is worth the price of admission IMO, and I wasn't on a Nintendo console since the N64, lol. Although many of those "other" titles I mentioned, are far and above the $7 price point of course, but well worth it. My 'backlog' is absolutely ludicrous at this point (Over 67 physical games and counting, not including 'digital only' indie titles), lol, and the good thing is they're actual PHYSICAL GAMES, meaning no DRM or 'Required Download to Hardrive' nonsense where you're merely 'renting a license' to play a game via EULA's, so you actually OWN the games for the system! The super fast boot up times with cartridges+HDD are an added bonus alongside the non-proprietary SD cards for memory options, lol. (this was the biggest selling point to me for the system, OWNING your games! and is the reason for me in opting to just get the Switch over other systems, as the competition ONLY have 'DRM disc Keys' now so it was a 'nonstarter' for me at that point, which sucks, as I loved my PS3+360, lol.) Really, It all just comes down to your situation+preferences in gaming. I have a Switch, but I am also picking up the 'Neo Geo Mini' to go alongside my SNES classic, as a standalone system to play on the Big screen with friends, as the 40 titles are a very appealing"value" prospect to me, and I haven't picked up too many ACA titles on the Switch yet, due to there being FAR TOO MANY other games on offer that were of greater scale+importance to me as a gamer, so I think a stand alone system will work well for the SNK title lineup on offer with the 'Mini', and it'll look cool under the TV next to the SNES classic. Like I said everyone's situation will vary in such instances, but there are at least a number of different options available for everyone, SNK is trying at least haha, so I'll probably also end up getting the '40th anniversary' physical cart when it releases as well, just because it will be a different selection of SNK titles and is a great way to pick up a number of different titles for the system all at once, as opposed to just buying the ACA titles one at a time (Which adds up quickly! lol.), and I already know the Emulation quality will be good and fits the portable aspect the switch offers well.
I saw that too. Basically the X was rushed out the door in time for a 2012 week-before-Christmas release and now they're trying to fix things 6 months on. That seems to be the attitude with too many developers nowadays. Back in the times of Cartridges/CD's and no internet connection, things had to run smoothly on the console and the software before they were shipped. I'll stick to MAME on my computer.
What I could tell you about this device that annoys me greatly (before the emulation was mentioned) is that the face buttons aren't even in the proper layout. If you rotate the A, B, C, and D clockwise just once, it would be laid out properly. That would bug the ever living crap out of me in King of Fighters. 180 pounds for this and they can't even get the buttons right.
Neo geo's were always overpriced. They were cool but nobody I knew owned anything neo geo. We all either had a snes or a genesis. If we wanted to play a neo geo game we had to go to our local arcade.
Being someone who spends more time fiddling around with things trying to get emulators on than actually playing emulated games (Raspberry Pi, Switch Hacks, etc) I was fascinated by what's going on under the hood here. What stopped me was that these things are going for around 400-600 dollars on ebay. I'll just stick with my switch, psp, raspberry pi, xbox one, pc, 3ds, *trails off listing things*
Doing a little research it turns out the hardware is literally, exactly the same as the Dingoo A320. Almost all my stuff is more powerful than this thing. Like my nvidia shield portable, psvita, *trails off again*
I just got one this weekend and after updating the firmware to v500, it's actually quite decent. Audio and video via HDMI has definitely improved, controller lag is not as bad as before, but screen tearing is still there. The NGX is not as bad as it is pictured here.
Nah, that's okay. I'm fine with SNK classics collection on PS2/PSP. All those exact games are found onto those collection games. Why have an emulated "handheld" when you can have it on either an actual Neo Geo, PS2, or SNK? Not at all a good idea. And you know, it even looks too much like a PSP, so there.
The Neo Geo Startup sound changed depending on what game you have loaded in at the time. This used to happen on the real AES and MVS hardware too.It is not an emulation bug,Also the Neo Geo games startup sounds exactly the same way on the FBA emulator on Windows.
+No Or both and also a CD like i did, they did not cost me 8 million bucks, but im in neo geo heaven now and playing all the metal slug games on the MVS is epic
You saved me so much money! I was so, so, so very close to buying one of these as I'm a huge SNK fan and felt like this was going to be a real treat for NeoGeo fans. I've been a fan of your channel for several years now but this video really just saved me $200 of my money. Thank you Ashens!
Well it's over 8 years later now, I have to ask, whatever did you end up doing with the NGX? Still have it? If so, still working? They did some fixes since, some hackers made a way to load more with a re-tooled memory card, etc.

I'm pretty glad you reviewed this as I found one for sale locally today, and remembered you'd reviewed it, so I ran home to watch this before I bought it, (as it was a decent price) looking now, though I don't think it was actually a good price! thanks Stuart!
Honestly, stretching stuff to widescreen doesn't bug me unless you do it as you do (where you stretch it after you've looked at it in 4:3 for awhile). If it starts off stretched I don't seem to care all that much. I run PS1 games on the PSP in stretch mode without getting terribly bothered by it.
So basically, if you have played a Neo-Geo before, get a PSP. If you haven't played a Neo-Geo before, buy a PSP. Nice job SNK!

The background in last resort looks a lot like Neo-Tokyo from Akira.
+magmaboarder The giant crater at the end of the first stage is also clearly based on an image in Akira. I hesitate to say 'ripped off' since it's an artful reproduction rather than say, a badly digitized image (not uncommon in the 16-bit days); but it is essentially the same artwork.

Seriously, how hard would it have been for them to make the docking stations fake cartridge slot into a stand for the hand held?
I would love to see you review Panasonic's real player called the 3DO. It retailed for $799.00!!! After 6 months the price dropped to $699.00. 3 years later it was dead and you could pick one up for $50.00.

On the other hand it has "Plumbers Don't Wear Ties"...
I want to like this so much it is so close but is just a cheap overpriced emulator.
That was pretty much the review in a nutshell.
To be honest if you want to get this so you can play neo geo games, you may as well just get an emulator for the PC, unless you are like me and must have authenticity, in which case get get an original neo geo.
So your telling me that i can pick up a ps3 for the same price?
I swear, his content, humor, or setup has NOT CHANGED AT ALL...I like it!
Despite its flaws it's an attractive looking handheld. I remember seeing NEO GEO and Jaguar advertised everywhere when
I was a kid, but I liked my NES.
you didnt anon, you was just poor and coping, you wanted that neo geo
It's basically just a really shitty Nintendo Switch. In fact, some Neo-Geo titles are available on the Switch's eShop right now.
I so wanted this when it came out until I saw the reviews. Bought a switch and spent about $80 on games and am happy
The switch was a copy of the Psp Go dock
stfu no one asked
Not sure about the aes having no European release- I have a pal one with an official neo geo uk power supply
Still Tommo's effort isn't all that bad and I wish official support continued without the legal issues between them and SNK.
i shoved a pi3 in mine and its now a monster,i own a AES also and love flexing on the poors with it,got a 161 cart for it too!

Anyone wanna make some comment about the Nintendo Switch, or shall I start?

I remember wanting this for for Xmas so very very veeeery much. Seriously, the excitement I had for this was almost childlike (which is a rarity now a days). Glad I wasn't able to get my hands on one because this thing is the biggest disappoint of the year for me (that year being 2013, eh fuck it 2016 too.)
You know your stuff Ashens, hats off to ya!
HOLY SHIT!
I just looked around ebay and you can get an original AES (imported it's plus about 80$ in the US) for about the same price as this. So if your stuck into wanting the real deal, just type in Neo Geo AES into ebay and you can get it at an OK price.
in the beginning, i thought this was a scam lol
then add 50 dollars per game...
piewackett
But add in the better gameplay and quality. You get what you pay for man, and besides I rather have a good quality and gameplay more then cheap price tag.
Nope, it always goves over £100
Aidex Huck or as ashens stated.... get a laptop... or a psp and emulate properly
Listening to the game intro in HDMI gave me the shivers, thanks for pointing this out. I'm sticking with my PSP.
SeekerLancer
Not really actually.
GRex7777 what you described is exactly what emulating is. It's the same base code, but made to run in different hardware.
Funnily enough, the PS3 works by emulating the PS1, with it's backward compatibility. It's hilarious to me. :P
ArmoredSoul1
True, but the PS3 does a little more than just play emulated PS1 games.
DeeM10123
I have a slim PS3 and I've played PS1 games on it before, but I've tried PS2 games and they don't work. I'm not sure about the new super slim PS3 though. I don't see why it wouldn't though, it just plays them through emulation.
*****
Unless you have a PS3 20 or 60gb (from back in the day). my PS3 60gb still plays my Ps2 games.
Christ alive if I could get that joypad clicking on loop I could fall asleep listening to that heavenly microswitch click.
I wish I could get a USB controller for my PC that had a stick like that, it would make playing fighting games so much less painful and it'd probably be a lot less unwieldy than a 300 dollar arcade stick.
could always build your own arcade stick
The Neo Geo X stick works on PC I've read
+SHARD THE FOX now it would be £232 ;)
Surely using an arcade stick at your desk is ideal, as long as you have somewhere to store it when not in use? A solid flat surface to rest it on is ideal. Also, most X360/X1/PS3/PS4 sticks are PC compatible, and not all cost $300.
If you play PC on your living room TV then I understand, I hate using those controllers on my lap personally.
Wow, I actually had high hopes for this... Thanks Ashens, saved me some money
it's quite amazing to look back on this video today and realise that the Nintendo switch isn't as revolutionary as people originally thought, the major difference is that the docking system on the switch is easier and probably feels less safe for the unit
It's quite funny to hear Stuart describe the switch in his concept for it
Hey thanks for making this video.
I love that awkward reflection of Ashens face in the screen when it's dark

Thank you for being the only one on the internet who covers this device. Lots of info I couldn't find on it.
***** Oh, so you mean a glass screen that cracks just by dropping it on a pillow is good quality?
***** well, as a person who owned an iPhone 4 for 2 years, I've see one survive a 7 foot fall onto hard wood (granted that's the only time I ever dropped it)
***** Must have been lucky. Many friends have dropped it from small heights and the screen broke.
***** It really depends on how it impacts the ground.
mshesh16 I don't intend to make people mad, but it seems to me like a lot of iPhone owners aren't exactly the type that care about their phone as much as they should.
My theory is that the design is actually more durable than a lot of Android phones, but so many iPhone owners are clumsy people who don't respect technology, so they end up breaking it. It probably isn't, but if that's true, I'd hate to see what would happen if all of those people had plastic phones like the Galaxy S4 (I'm not bashing it or anything; I own one and it's great)
If I remember rightly they now sell Neo Geo games on the PS store, so you can play them on PS Vita/3/4.

Just found one of these selling for more than 15thousand us dollars on ebay.
It was brand new in box and unused but that is still completely insane.
Damn they must be smoking that good stuff.
It's pretty much impossible to find these things for less than $400 USED. It is wild. I never got one back in the day because it was well... kinda crap. I always imagined I'd pick one up second hand for cheap later on but nope, they've *doubled* in price 🤷

That's why I'm here too
Apparently the new Neo Geo X game cards that are coming out next month (with 3 games per card) will have and I quote 'Improved TV aspect ratio, sound quality and are capable of game saves'.
Subbed btw. Great vid.
What's that thing on your PSP Dpad?
X2! Been trying to figure this out now for a while. I need to to do diagonals (like in Metal Slug) and my psp just won't do them.
There was a large Dpad and a tiny anolog stick
I saw this is a EB games store in Australia and yeah they had the same one there for about two months I saw the dust gathering every time I walked in I love SNK but yeah......
I swore I saw one of these sitting around as well somewhere last year, but I can't remember where....either FYE or Retrospct Games (a local handler of old arcade systems)
Haha cool
+the7kSRK Yeah I read about this. Blaze will continue to keep selling them until their contract ends this year if it hasn't already.

Why is the screen in 16:9? Well, some people might not like having borders and like having the thing fill the screen . :/
ENunn yeah but it makes the games look absolutely terrible to the point a lot of games become unplayable because the screen is just a mass of stretched blobs
SNK has recently teamed up with DotEmu, which makes me think they're incapable of picking decent business partners when you take this...thing into account.

It starts with an "N", and ends with an "X", and it's a handheld that plugs into a docking station to connect it to the TV... NX anyone?
Yagami Celco UMM AND THE NX WAS TURNED INTO THE SWITCH!!!!!!! WHICH IS BASICALLY THIS!!!!!!!
Funny thing is, there are a bunch of Neo Geo games on the Switch's eShop already.
(this was the biggest selling point to me for the system, OWNING your games! and is the reason for me in opting to just get the Switch over other systems, as the competition ONLY have 'DRM disc Keys' now so it was a 'nonstarter' for me at that point, which sucks, as I loved my PS3+360, lol.)
Really, It all just comes down to your situation+preferences in gaming.
My hopes for retro gaming just died : (

Welcome to Ashens.
***** That...is a somewhat bizarre design choice.

I've always been on the edge about getting one of these every since they released. I'll get one more than likely if the price goes down!
Nintendo Switch ripped this off.
hey look it's a nintendo switch complete with the old codename on it's name.

Still playing on mine a year later and love it. The PSP has been on a shelf ever since.
This may be one of the greatest reviews I've ever seen.

What a flaming pile of SHITE!
Just download Mame.
Thank you Stu for not defacing Metal Slug by playing it on that garbage heap!
*slaps cheeks home alone style* TAKE MAH RUPEES!!!
+GamingDude800 with local and online co-op!
Yep, the port is really good. Metal Slug, Metal Slug 2, Metal Slug 3 and Metal Slug X.
Ok, so scratch this. I'm just gonna load NEO.emu on my tablet and play games that way.
9:36 - you've probably heard this already, but that wasn't Rugal---that was Wolfgang Krauser.
I just got one this weekend and after updating the firmware to v500, it's actually quite decent. Audio and video via HDMI has definitely improved, controller lag is not as bad as before, but screen tearing is still there. The NGX is not as bad as it is pictured here.
Would buy for $100 maybe $120 but thats about it.
No Neo Turf Masters?
Rip off.
GIVE ME SOME MUTHAFUCKING 2D BEAT EM UPS!!!!
Get Neo Geo Emulator on PC and get all roms for free instead of buying that.
Super expensive home game console with many problems is a waste of money.
Or get a real Neo Geo AES, its awesome
+No Or both and also a CD like i did, they did not cost me 8 million bucks, but im in neo geo heaven now and playing all the metal slug games on the MVS is epic
the first nintendo switch
You saved me so much money! I was so, so, so very close to buying one of these as I'm a huge SNK fan and felt like this was going to be a real treat for NeoGeo fans. I've been a fan of your channel for several years now but this video really just saved me $200 of my money. Thank you Ashens!
Well it's over 8 years later now, I have to ask, whatever did you end up doing with the NGX? Still have it? If so, still working? They did some fixes since, some hackers made a way to load more with a re-tooled memory card, etc.
Go to 16:00 if you want your soul to be crushed.
+Zack Stout Its a remix!
That clicking noise is torture.
Are you crazy? It's heavenly

Who's here because to the Smash Presentation for Terry?
I'm pretty glad you reviewed this as I found one for sale locally today, and remembered you'd reviewed it, so I ran home to watch this before I bought it, (as it was a decent price) looking now, though I don't think it was actually a good price! thanks Stuart!
Honestly, stretching stuff to widescreen doesn't bug me unless you do it as you do (where you stretch it after you've looked at it in 4:3 for awhile). If it starts off stretched I don't seem to care all that much. I run PS1 games on the PSP in stretch mode without getting terribly bothered by it.
