The other day, my dad was telling me about how he learned about the gameboy. Apparently another construction worker was talking about it, and my dad called bullshit on a portable video game and got into a huge argument over it. After that, he ended up going to a radio shack or something, seeing one, and being completely amazed by it. So he bought it. And all the accessories he could buy for it. And almost all the games in the store. In fact, I'm pretty sure we still have the same gameboy and the same shit he bought that day.
Yeah. I don't think he's ready to part with it yet haha. And he was absolutely devestated when his Nes 001 stopped working, due to the fact it was the first thing he bought when he got out of the military. He refuses to part with any gaming stuff. It's pretty funny, actually. You'd expect him to be matured and sick of it by now. Nope, still loves it at the age of 52.
That handy boy is kinda like the game boy equivalent of when a character in a cyberpunk game puts too many augments in their body so they end up as the horrific amalgamation of metal that's more machine than man.
Honestly? I kinda like the Handy Boy. It's charming. I mean, it looks like a crazy gadget from some shitty 80s hacker film, but that's exactly the kind of thing that would impress the kids I went to school with back then.
The Handy Boy seems pretty cool except that strap is like sandpaper! I used to wear it around my neck and shit when I was younger and wow all the blisters it gave me
it didnt work as intended at all though xd i got this for playing when riding long car rides.. didnt work... just... didnt... work ;/ sure you got "street creds" in the school xd but that was about all it did
The first time I was grounded was over a Game Boy. My mother was dead set on me playing the Game Boy in bed when I was supposed to be sleeping. I kept trying to explain to her, as politely as I could, that you couldn't see the screen in the dark. One night, after one of those days in second grade where you're made to feel an inch tall and put your head down on your desk for an hour because you pushed Suzy Sourpanties on the playground, she came in to my room claiming she heard "beeping" coming from somewhere. Again, I nicely told her no, but she just kept pushing. I threw the covers off, stomped over to my dresser and produced the Game Boy, screaming "YOU CAN'T SEE IT. IN THE. FUCKING DARK." If my parents had hit me, I'm pretty sure my ass would have been torn off at that point. As it was, two weeks with nothing except homework and her fucking awful Spaghetti was bad enough.
The booster boy is about as portable as "portable computers" from the 80s. By which of course I mean exactly as portable as a blacksmith's anvil. That is chained and bolted to a lead elephant.
Son of Tiamat (formerly known as tiakpark) I have no genuine malice towards the gameboy, the Compaq portable computer (as presented by John Cleese), or anvils chained to lead elephants. It was a joke m70.
Bob Woggle No actually, I was the one making a joke m10, but it's my fault for not making it clearer. I meant it to be like a commercial. Hey, Kids! Do you wish the Gameboy was big, clunky and a serious financial drain!? Introducing...BIG BOY! The final word in unnecessary add-ons you'll wish you never bought!
You should have had Chinese grand parents. Mine gave me $100 bills in a red envelope. The catch is that, you'll have a weird genetic urge to stockpile the money.
1989 was a very big year for Nintendo. *The Wizard was released in theaters. *In Ghostbusters II, Louis Tully mentions Super Mario Bros. and Ray Stantz uses an NES Advantage to control the Statue of Liberty. *In Back to the Future Part II, there's a Wild Gunman arcade cabinet in a 1980s themed cafe. *The Nintendo Game Boy was launched. *Captain N: The Game Master and The Super Mario Bros. Super Show was premiered on TV.
Cro martini The Wizard is pretty much a Nintendo commercial in the form of a feature film. "You got 50,000 on Double Dragon?", yeah right. I could do better than that in Metal Slug or on a Neo Geo game.
Game Boy Light was released after the Game Boy Color was already announced, so that's probably why they didn't sell many. People knew it was going to be replaced in a few months.
you can mod gameboys to have a backlight without using an SP, please no one, for the love of god kill any GBA SPs for this. store.kitsch-bent.com/category/diy
dedpxl I still have my GBA SP and let me tell you, it is my pride and joy out of all my very portable gadgets. So I can very well understand where you're coming from all of that.
16:08 Well the thing about those simpler light accessories is that when you didn’t need it, you could just switch it off and detach it from your Game Boy and put it in your other pocket. The Light Boy, another accessory like the Nuby, could even fold its lens up to make it fit into a pocket better. (It also had other features that made it better in general, like a magnifier and only requiring 2 AAs)
Skawo I saw on some shopping channel once they were selling about 20 or so pieces (a "tennis racket", "baseball bat", "golf club", etc) for about US$70, I was shocked to see that some people actually bought the crap. The plastic looked extremely cheap, and since the host used as a selling point that it was "light weight", it probably was.
I still have memories of the happy music with a stickman(?)-runner who had my cat's head. Well, that cat isn't alive anymore. :( At least her legacy remains in Game Boy Camera.
I'll be honest: I really like the look of the Handy Boy. Something about having all those bits and bobs branching off the main part of the gameboy makes it look really cool. Makes it seem like your gameboy is about a million times more advanced than it is. What I'm trying to say is, I would totally buy a Handy 3DS, or a Handy Switch, or whatever.
It's interesting looking back at this from the perspective of our post-switch days. They're less offensive when you think of them as a home dock than something you carry with you
Have to say, the game boy was my first console, and i had the magnifying glass for it, but this thing... 5:06 I mean look at it that poor game boy is like "KIIILLLLLL..... MEEEEEHHHHHHHHH"
Ya know, I'm not sure... but I think I may very well still have my Handy Boy. Honestly, it worked pretty darn well... but I was using it in a pitch-black room, basically. Or under the covers, when I was supposed to be sleeping for school. And of course, I did not even bother with the Handy Boy JoyPlus module. That thing was indisputably crap (while the Handy Boy itself was just _questionably_ so).
I love the booster boy, you're playing it all wrong. You aren't supposed to hold it. You leave it on a table and play it like an arcade cabinet. The reason you are getting shadow, is because you are holding it on its side, so the light from your ceiling is being blocked by the magnifier. Resting the booster boy on a table resolves that. The gameboy doesn't have to be portable all the time. Especially, when you're at home.
The handy boy is absolutely the most hilarious and stupid thing I've ever seen in my life and it actually kind of makes me embarrassed to be a human being.
6:25 I had a revision of that, I THINK for the Gameboy Pocket that was 500% less absurd. Yes it had the folding speakers but no battery intercepting. I think it took batteries of it's own and that was it.
I remember when my parents bought me a light with a magnifying glass on it for the gameboy. I think you could play for like 10 minutes with hte light on before the bateries where drained xD Still i miss those day's. The Gameboy has been a big part of my life. Got it when i was 8, or rather i saved for it as kid myself. I remember it was my birthday and it would cost me 150 gulden (yeah im dutch). That morning my parents gave me Super Mario Land for the gameboy, and damn i had to go to school. Luckely it was a wednessday meaning we only had half a day school. After school the sun was shining (my birthday is at the end of october so also rather rare :P), i bought the gameboy o so proud as 8 year old that i didn't listen to the sales man who kept explaining that if you put the sound on loudest it would drain batteries quicker. Who cares right? Used my grey handheld till the Gameboy Advance came out. I still have it and it still works. It were such amazing times. *Edit: Corrected Super Mario World into Super Mario Land
i had a very simple light that you could put in the gameboy back in the day. it didn't work as well as a screen with backlight. but it did its job perfectly fine
The Booster Boy looks like some sort of Gameboy coffin. The irony being that the accessory kills most of the fun you'd usually have with the Gameboy once you put it inside.
0:54 So a Japanese video game cartridge case, that was made by Mexicans, to cater to Americans, is now in the hands of a British man. ……Hotel Trivago anyone?
yes but back in the day they made that Frankenstein of an adapter lol Still that Konami arcade thing looked pretty cool tho wish I had one of them back in the day =) (EDIT:) Was just imagining what it might have been like with the Konami and playing classic Tetris or space invaders.
Azreal Dragoon With that much travel on the stick? I presume...hell. :-P With games like Tetris, at the later levels, you need a lot of control and reflexes, and this probably cuts it by half. Let's make Ashens play Tetris on this!!
My little exposure to it over the years never made much of an impression. Any phone game I get will last a few hours before then sitting for eternity on the second page of unuse. The two original Gameboys we had in the house when I was little never had any games.
It was a different time, when most kids didn't have TVs or PCs in their room. There was a technological shift around 2000 or so, during the dot com boom and that's when technology started pouring into kids' rooms.
You didn't like Link's Awakening, Donkey Kong, or Wario Land, or Kirby, or Mega Man? What are you, some kind of communist? In all seriousness, a lot of Game Boy games are easily as good or better than anything on the NES or SNES. The original Game Boy is incredibly primitive these days, but the games were legit.
I had both the handiboy and the light attachment he was talking about at the end. The latter worked so much better, though I generally just left the magnifier directly against the screen to avoid the shadow problem. Didn't give me any magnification that way, but the light worked better.
The most interesting handheld accessory I saw was a GBA SP add-on that added 3 cartridge slots to your system. The idea was that it plugs into the original cartridge slot and you could insert 3 different games in it, so you can switch between them without having to swap them out. Kind of like a multi CD loader was for stereos.
Yeah, I had the Handy Boy, leaving it in the same bag as my gameboys and other accessories destroyed the side clips, I don't recall it being super horrible for usability but it worked as well as pretty much everything else.
Probably will be the fashion for next year, demin overalls and dungerees have come back in fashion, and so have creepers, they're all from the 70s and 80s.
I couldn't believe what it sounded like the first time I connected my Gameboy to my stereo using a 1/8" to RCA cable. The music from Tetris was absolutely amazing. The GB itself has a great sound chip.
+1 “Aphid” Person I always used headphones on mine too. So much better. Not just because of the sound, (though that certainly played quite a role in it,) but that I didn't have to put the speaker to my ear to hear.
Now, we are overloaded with cheap Chinese knockoffs and just companies being cheap because thay wang to be cheap and put no effort into being cheap and making it in China.
Plenty of things are made in the U.S. even if maybe automation is large contribution. Not like we're the only country that makes products elsewhere though.
I don't know if I just lucked out or something, but I LOVED my booster boy. Speakers were good, lights were good, etc. Only problem I had was the plastic part on the joystick broke, and I couldn't get it fixed no matter what I tried.
12:20 that Japanese boy is wearing shorts made for Daisy Duke... that is the most bizarre photoshop, and this was in the 90's... I know obviously before modern photoshop photos could be edited in this way but, what was so wrong with the actual image that the boy got to wear daisy dukes?!?!?!
I had the Handy Boy. It was a pain, yes, but it also did improve the visibility, especially during those long 16 hour car rides to grandma's house. I did get rid of the control part after a while, though. Plus, it was easily carried by the neck strap. That Booster Boy would have been amazing back in the day. And with a wall wart, you could have it plugged in the room when you're not needing the extra battery.
im pretty sure hes a boy, think about when this crap was made made 80s/early 90s, guys wearing pretty short shorts was pretty normal back then, even in the USA
ChronicConnoisseur Yup. We all wore the same short shorts. I've been watching the old Friday the 13th movies and all the guys are in teeny shorts. Just like their girlfriends.
He has pretty damn feminine legs, but hey. There's a fair portion of the Japanese male population that are hard to tell apart from females when they cross dress. I'd say this one's definitely a guy.
The Handy Boy is like putting the Gameboy on life support and the Booster Boy is like putting it into a coffin after it finally died.
And the last attachment is just defiling the sad, withered, AA battery powered, corpse.
+Snoopy DoesGaming I'd say it looks more like a headstone.
+mcluigi117 And the hyper boy is a cryogenic capsule to revive it.
+mclugi177 and the hyperboy is its tomb

That is amazing. You could sell some of that stuff for a dollar or two on Ebay if it still has the boxes.
Nah. He threw out the boxes haha.
Dylan Todd
Damn. Well you can give it a try. People do like some of those things. Even ironically.
Yeah. I don't think he's ready to part with it yet haha. Aww. He has to keep it then.

You should watch last armor in this video. I mean last accessory. It made by konami. LOL
The konami Hyperboy is so large, you insert the entire Gameboy in the back like its a game cartridge.
Cartridgeception!
Should have a competition on how large can you make your old Game Boy using various accessories all at once.
Are you trying to rip a hole in the universe?
What if you could get an accessory that turns the game boy into a pc
+Insecurity Intensifies windows 1
already done.
i made my own accesory its a rock boy

Nihilistic Acid Dance I feel the same about the booster boy ( the one after the handy boy) which is why I bought one.

Son of Tiamat (formerly known as tiakpark) Ah. now it makes sense. Sorry 'bout that.
Bob Woggle No problem :)
These accessories are the sort of thing you'd get for Christmas from your grand parents years after you've got a newer game system.
I would have told them to CHOKE ON IT....
You should have had Chinese grand parents. Mine gave me $100 bills in a red envelope. The catch is that, you'll have a weird genetic urge to stockpile the money.
Great reference with Choke on It. I would've said PULL THE PLUG on all this tatty garbage
manictiger Yeah if I had Chinese grandparents, i'd have to invest that money wisely, or else they'd "feel great shame".

I'd, Pull the Plug on my grandparents if they got me this. These presents would be real, Spirit Crushers. Get it, get it?

And hot pants
Game Boy Light was released after the Game Boy Color was already announced, so that's probably why they didn't sell many. People knew it was going to be replaced in a few months.

oh my lord, you just can't beat the original gameboy in terms of tat, can you? Not even the cheapest and nastiest of knockoffs can compete.

Skawo Right.
Skawo To be fair, most of them did nothing.

I feel so bad for ashen's gameboy because I can hear it whisper "Please... Get this shit outta me, Kill me, Do something to end my suffering."

That Handyboy looks amazing. They need to make a version for mobile phones.
Kickstarter anyone?
I remember seeing those massive stereo magnifier combo kits in the wild. People actually used them.
I can't believe Nintendo didn't think anyone needed a backlight until the game boy advance SP came out took them 14 years to figure it out wtf

Alex Malinky I like shorts. They comfy and easy to wear
Alex Malinky I like shorts! They're comfy and easy to wear!
*_the po kay mans_*
so many nostalgia feels. just got into your channel you're great love your form of comedy
the gameboy says: kill me.
11:40 - It looks like Luke's Landspeeder!
If I had a British accent, everyone would think I knew what I was taking about too.
+VaughnJogVlog What are you talking about?
I must have been one of the few that actually enjoyed the HandyBoy. Actually wore out the battery adapter because I used it so much.
5:40 what could go wrong
The Booster Boy looks like some sort of Gameboy coffin. The irony being that the accessory kills most of the fun you'd usually have with the Gameboy once you put it inside.
The 4 C batteries were just a bit much!
0:54 So a Japanese video game cartridge case, that was made by Mexicans, to cater to Americans, is now in the hands of a British man.
……Hotel Trivago anyone?
Wait! Saitek made this crap?? Dont they make PC gamepads and joysticks now? How did they survive after making THAT?! Also, Konami...
yes but back in the day they made that Frankenstein of an adapter lol
Still that Konami arcade thing looked pretty cool tho wish I had one of them back in the day =)
(EDIT:) Was just imagining what it might have been like with the Konami and playing classic Tetris or space invaders.
Azreal Dragoon With that much travel on the stick? I presume...hell. :-P With games like Tetris, at the later levels, you need a lot of control and reflexes, and this probably cuts it by half. Let's make Ashens play Tetris on this!!
Saitek is sort of specialized into flight sim nowadays, i used to have half a desk full of their fsx cockpit panels :D
Huh, my original name was rayman1220 and I have that exact profile picture on steam, hello brother.
***** that would be funny to watch.
"HEY ASHENS WE CHALLENGE YOU TO USE THE KONAMI STICK AND PLAY TETRIS ON LEVEL 20". lol
So _THIS_ is what happens if one of those comic book super-villains tries to earn money with his mad science. That thing is insane o_O
"Pride USA (made in mexico)" is actually Donald Trump's Presidential Campaign slogan
this comment is underrated sir you can take this W
The Handy boy looks like a Halloween costume for your Game Boy
I've never enjoyed mobile gaming. It has always looked awful. From Gameboy to modern smartphone games they've always managed to be a fun void.
Didn't give me any magnification that way, but the light worked better.
this would be a good avgn episode
S0 true m8
ingibingi2000 Well, do I have news for you
o man, I totally remember that speaker/screen system thing. so ridiculous. The only attachment I ever got was the worm light. Very useful.
All this crap when I could just buy a super gameboy
True!
+Nerdy Transformed The point to the video is showing these Gameboy accessories that were available BEFORE the newer Gameboy types came out.
It was released just before my mother released me from her womb
I'm. Glad, you shared that with the class.
Oda Swifteye I could bring my mum in for show and tell?
mattfox14 Only if she brings juice for snacktime.
Big Bob's Beepers
You got it sir.
Oda Swifteye I'll pass the request on to my mum guys ;)
'In really quite crazy hotpants' cracked me up so much that I almost choked on my weekend PJ's.
That poor gameboy must feel raped after having all those attachments entering its most delicate places
Yeah, I had the Handy Boy, leaving it in the same bag as my gameboys and other accessories destroyed the side clips, I don't recall it being super horrible for usability but it worked as well as pretty much everything else.
Why is that japanese kid wearing daisy dukes?
The modeling agency expected a girl for the picture, they had to make do
\_(•-•)_/
Damn, these accessories look so cool that I want to go back in 90's and the original Gameboy and Konami's Hyperboy.
Bring back hotpants for men 2015
Probably will be the fashion for next year, demin overalls and dungerees have come back in fashion, and so have creepers, they're all from the 70s and 80s.
Already on it ;-)
I couldn't believe what it sounded like the first time I connected my Gameboy to my stereo using a 1/8" to RCA cable.
I'm so old I remember when we made things in the USA! :/
+Tak Wolf How are you even alive at this point?
+Eugene Krabs hahaha.
+Tak Wolf Ah yes, the roaring 20's I remember it like yesterday, now if you excuse me I have to go find my colostomy bag. Wait..... Were am I?
When the game is so hard, you have to turn your Gameboy into Megazord !
Wow...the Handy Boy blows. Hmm. That doesn't look good now that I've typed that.
Looks perfect to me.
Is that Japanese kid a boy or a girl? Those shorts are amazingly short. It's gotta be a girl.
im pretty sure hes a boy, think about when this crap was made made 80s/early 90s, guys wearing pretty short shorts was pretty normal back then, even in the USA
ChronicConnoisseur
Yup. We all wore the same short shorts. I've been watching the old Friday the 13th movies and all the guys are in teeny shorts. Just like their girlfriends.
Adrastia I know right. Masculine fashion that needs to be popularized again.
He has pretty damn feminine legs, but hey. There's a fair portion of the Japanese male population that are hard to tell apart from females when they cross dress. I'd say this one's definitely a guy.
Wouldn't the girl have a skirt?
(though I think they only have to wear school uniforms starting with middle school or so)
I had a Handy Boy back in the day. I wasn't fond of the D-Pad/Button cover but I used the rest of it regularly. That Booster Boy though...whoa!
