The names Madonna lists are very famous people from the 1930s-1960s. Most were actors, singers, and/or dancers notable for their fashion style, extraordinary beauty, poise, and similar attributes fitting to the magazine covers emulated by Vogue. All of them have passed away. It is a short list of the many significant Hollywood stars and talented artists from a bygone era who should be remembered and known by young people today. Those she mentions, in order:
    Greta Garbo (actress)
    Marilyn Monroe (actress)
    Marlene Dietrich (actress)
Joe DiMaggio (NY Yankee baseball player & married to Marilyn Monroe)
Marlon Brando (2 time Oscar winning actor on film and stage, considered one of the greatest American actors)
James Dean (actor who died tragically when quite young)
Grace Kelly (actress who became a princess upon marrying the Prince of Monaco)
    Jean Harlow (actress)
Gene Kelly (dancer, singer, and actor)
Fred Astaire (dancer, singer, and actor)
Ginger Rogers (dancer, singer, and actor)
    Rita Hayworth (actress)
Lauren Bacall (actress, married famous actor Humphrey Bogart)
    Kathryn Hepburn (actress)
    Lana Turner (actress)
    Bette Davis (actress)

Madonna- made a point to push the boundaries as to what is acceptable in society. Specifically, she defended gay community, and sexual expression back in the 90’s. She paved the way for women like Beyoncé, lady Gaga, Britney Spears. Speaking of Beyoncé- “ break my soul ( queens remix) “ re mixed vogue and added black female icons to the name drop. You should check it out!

A movie "Paris Is Burning" was about the Vogue clubs and society in New York City. I saw it when it came out and was astounded. There were Vogue competitions, fought fiercely by different Houses. They dominated the space. Yes it was walking and moving, the whole runway and how you presented.

The names she's singing about are all famous actors from the golden age of Hollywood ( Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, Joe DiMaggio, Marlene Dietrich, Marlon Brando, Jimmy Dean, Grace Kelly, Jean Harlow, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Rita Hayworth, Lauren Bacall, Katharine Hepburn, Lana Turner and Bette Davis). Thematically the video pays tribute both to the gay vogueing underground and the golden age of Hollywood.

Great reaction to the beloved Madonna! For those who may not know, Voguing is a highly stylized form of dance that originated in the African-American gay-trans community around Harlem from the 60s, 70s and 80s. There is a 1990 documentary movie called "Paris Is Burning" which features voguing. In that same year, this video and song came out, thereby making "voguing" more mainstream.........😊

  • @JamesWood-ef1rg
    @JamesWood-ef1rg 9 місяців тому +5

Madonna brought voguing to the masses! originally voguing was a dance from the black gay clubs of the U.S.A! Madonna being a big supporter of black and gay culture tipped it over into the mainstream of pop music of the 90s and beyond. At a time when racism and homophobia was rife Madonna gave gay culture a voice, especially when HIV ( AIDS ) was a big stigma at the time, alot of younger people do not realise Madonna pathed the way, for many other artists and was and still is a massive gay icon.
But this was only the beginning justify my love and Erotica was coming too, which shook religious groups the world over, followed by Madonna's sex book.
Vogue was Number 1 all over the world.
when she was mentioning names in the middle of the song she was saying the names of very old actresses and actors from the golden era of hollywood, i think they have all died now.
But i think if they was around they would of been quite honored to be mentioned.
She will always be the Queen of pop music, and a gay icon.

Vouging started in the 80s in the underground New York scene with People of Color mostly black and Latino of the gay LGBT community
The rap part at the end of the song names movie stars of the classic golden age of Hollywood

Madonna has always been into Cabbala. As a matter of course. When she was young it was mostly un-official and stemmed from youthful curiosity and a general protest against Christianity. But she was reading about it and developing who she is spiritually speaking. When she got older- it became official and public. She has spoken about her process of maturing spiritually- to her credit- several times. It's not hard to find if you look. I'm not some rabid Madonna fan- I just remember seeing and reading her sentiments on the subject over time. 🧐_😑💀
