"The wrong side of the road" (2:00) That was my problem in England. I went to Teignmouth in Devon to improve my English as a Hamburg schoolboy. Big problem with the bicycle. A lot of times I appeared on the right side. For my luck, nothing happened, there were barely cars in the (at the time) little village.
We've lived all over the world and change back and forth all the time. BEST way to think about it - anywhere in the world - is to keep oncoming traffic on the driver's side. Easy to keep it straight that way.
Great topic for your blog. All tourists intending to rent a car in Madeira should watch this video. You picked a nice village to go to lunch. My favorite place in Madeira.
I just got back from a week long holidays in Madeira. I rented a car for a 6 days since I was staying in Ribeira Brava(it was actually one of the hostels up in the "mountains" - about 10min drive from the bottom). I 100% agree with the roundabout driving, I admit I got it wrong a few times but the other thing that people should be aware of are the short merging lanes on the "freeways". Some of them are very scary when the traffic is heavy. You gotta be ready to go full on and even push yourself in sometimes... Steep hills are fine just stop at the bottom and go on the first gear or switch to second if the car can handle it... Another thing is to leave the car in a gear when driving downhill. I think they tell that to people when renting the car but I've seen some rental cars to go crazy on brakes downhill. Rev matching is useful as well. Anyways I highly recommend to rent a car to anyone visiting Madeira as it gives you freedom and most importantly time to arrive at busy locations before the masses and buses with large groups come in... One small tip: if you can, get a car with raised chassis if you are planning to go to the mountains and get a more powerfull car or buy better gasoline at the gas stations, trust me - their will be moments every pony is good :D PS: the roads are fairly good, you can't expect the backroads to be in perfect condition plus all the main roads actually are in nearly perfect conditions. I was pleasantly surprised :)
Thanks for all the tips and tricks. We ❤ your moviess when we were in Madeira this week and we spotted your jeep unfortunately not you to thank you in person We will be back.😉😃👍

@@jadelahmad I had a Ford Focus from Avia Car Madeira. I booked via TUI Cars. Was a very pleasant experience. The car itself had the smallest engine, turbo charged 101hp, which was sufficient for most of the roads. Maybe a turbo diesel would be even better.

What do you think about traveling in Madeira on a scooter (125cc)? Is it safe if I want to travel on a longer distance? For example if I want to go from Funchal to Porto Moniz. Am I allowed to use the highways?
I believe there is a limit on what bikes can be driven on the highway, better to ask the bike rentals. I wouldn’t drive to Porto Moniz on a scooter because I’m not a motorbike kind of guy, love the way they look, but don’t have the experience so I prefer to stay away. Interesting that you skipped the advice on how to drive on the (steep) hill/mountain roads. Especially the part of going down the road in the same gear that you came up (to save your breaks) and similar advice. Maybe a good subject to do another video on ;)?
An advanced driving course maybe? 😂 there’s a lot I missed out on, maybe because we made everything in a hurry. When you’re releasing videos every week as well running a business, it becomes tough to balance the two. I honestly don’t think I need to go into the “advanced” stuff. @@Hittheroadmadeira Personally, living in a very flat country. whilst driving on steep roads may seem like second nature to you, I do think that's advice people could really use. obviously you're not going fully in depth. but you could cover it along with some other more basic stuff like the Madeiran +10 km in good/dry weather sign (which as far as I know is unique at least in Europe), the difference between the tunnels/highway system and the old roads and perhaps how to drive past the cows when you get up into the mountains ;), that kind of stuff. Great video! The weirdest thing about roads in Madeira, to me, is the lack of entry lanes at various spots on the highway, especially around Funchal. I witnessed some dangerous situations caused by this.
Yes, you have to be very careful getting on the highway for sure !! I see way too many people driving “till the end” and then stopping and not having any momentum to move ahead. I think we’ll be planning a Part 2 to this video. Thanx Chester 🤠

As always not much information, just blabla talk. No info on specific roads. No info on driving steeps. No info on merging into traffic on the main road that can be challenging. Only topic covered are the 'traffic circles'. Extraoridinarily superficial.
Yes you’re right, there’s much more to driving in Madeira, seems you already know? Anyway, I’ll take the constructive criticism, maybe I’ll make something a bit more in depth next time. In the meanwhile I’ll try to be less extraordinarily superficial 😂 stick around, it’s only going to get worse

You are showing the bad parts of Madeira. There are lots of modern roads too
this is entertainment tv my friend ;) eheh next time I will try share some more modern roads ;))
@@Hittheroadmadeira I like to see the hard roads so I know what to expect, modern roads we can all drive.
Vielen Dank
🙏
Great video! The weirdest thing about roads in Madeira, to me, is the lack of entry lanes at various spots on the highway, especially around Funchal. I witnessed some dangerous situations caused by this.
Yes, you have to be very careful getting on the highway for sure !! I see way too many people driving “till the end” and then stopping and not having any momentum to move ahead. I think we’ll be planning a Part 2 to this video. Thanx Chester 🤠
👏🏻
Thanx Joel!
Olá Jeff LOL we took your advice to drive the inner lane of the circle and we got honked at when we tried to exit!
Would love your tips too on how to find parking/where to park/ how to park in Funchal!!
Servus und alles gute!!
lol maybe you were exiting and we're supposed to be on the outer lane? haha don't stress it, I'm sure it was a playful honk ;)
Thanx for the tip, I think a "How to park in Funchal" video would actually do pretty well :) Thank you!
Are you kidding me, I've been going for 30 years the roads are better than England!!!
I didn’t say the roads were bad ...
We have fantastic roads, in most places. My objective was to make people aware of possible “scary moments” ;)
In the meanwhile I’ll try to be less extraordinarily superficial 😂 stick around, it’s only going to get worse
this is entertainment plus some info. give the guy a break! great video by the way! was there 2 years ago and loved it. driving steep is crazy though.
Hi
Do you rent a car?
I don’t I’m sorry, but you can try lido tours ;)
Roads aren't bad, we drivers are the only bad thing u can find on the road
Ahah very true Dino 😅
It’s Almost like driving in a third world country .
I don’t know how the government allow such narrow roads .
Remember for a long time Madeira was quite poor …
This was useless, thank you
Cheers bru ✌️
