In today's video we go back to July 1995, when Penguin Books celebrated their 60th Anniversary. This was a great time to be a collector; rare penguins were cheap and plentiful and Penguin as a company were starting to embrace their past.
During this time, I was a retailer and my own shop, Purple Haze, put on window display of both vintage and the new Penguin 60's titles and this generated quite a bit of attention, including from the local press.
Original point of sale, sub sheet forms and of course the books are all examined here, alongside some dodgy photos of me from 27 years ago!

Thanks for another great video Jules. Fascinating peeking behind the curtain, seeing all the promo material. I also loved the Red Dwarf books from back in the day: still got my copy of the omnibus edition that's looking very worse-for-wear after about 20 rereads 😂
Thanks Lee, yes, it was a great time to be selling and dealing in the old and new books. I pretty much saved everything! I'll do a video on Red Dwarf soon, got a few bits🙂

Really really enjoyed this video - I too worked for Penguin - for three years - so your " special place in my heart" comment reminds me that I still after all these years feel pretty much the same about the company that in the end was the first of three companies to make me redundant over the years - besides the books I also have fond memories of the people I worked with at Penguin. I was working in an independent bookshop in 1995 and remember how popular those little sixties books were - thanks for bringing back some great memories - Terry T :-)) NZ - ps loved your comment about having to "eat" the 60s chocolate as if you hadn't it would have gone off !! :-)))))
Thanks Terry🙂 It was quite a special time back then and I really admired Penguin for publishing the 60's and for starting to acknowledge their heritage. The Penguin staff were always excellent and certainly helped me as an independent. Those were the days 👍

People still ask me about these when I'm behind the counter- and I usually trawl out a brief history of each of the anniversaries from 85 onwards. Remember the ones Orion did, that weren't anniversary-related at all? There used to be hundreds of them in Booth's at Hay, they never sold like the Penguins!
It's true Steve, I always loved this anniversary, it was when I really got into collecting the publisher. I'm sure I have a couple of Orion ones as well somewhere.
Really enjoyed this! Do you have any similar format books from other publishers? I have a few published by Phoenix, same size, black spines, also 60p, but I'm not sure what they called the collection. Also some freebies given away with the Sunday Observer published by 4th Estate in the same format.
Great stuff! I did used to have a few of those Phoenix paperbacks but don't think I've got and now, maybe one or two. These were easily 100 promotional titles. Not an avenue I've gone down yet but they're on my radar now.
I still blame you for my paperback addiction, just so you know lol.
