Your commentary on the 5 worst is very entertaining! I love that you got through all of these. Some of them sound really interesting, but I'm not sure I would have read all of them so kudos.
Thanks so much Adele! Yes, the Du Maurier was great, it was actually my introduction to her and then I read Rebecca shortly afterwards! What was the other mini that you got?
Dane Reads ah Rebecca is one of my fave books that's why I got that one. Other one I got (I did have a whole pile but in Europe they are a bit more and wanted to just get a couple to try) is the Carson McCullers The Haunted Boy. I'll definitely get more when I'm back home in UK 👍🏼👍🏼 also really like how you do your monthly hauls btw!!
This is clearly a hot topic!!! I jumped with excitement when you said you were going in order of worst to best, haha. It's just more exciting! I liked the comparison of several songs to one of the books. Great one.
@@danecobain To be honest? There's a few online shops in my country that bring books and manga from UK / USA and the shipping is only $2 - $5, and on the one I ordered from, if you order a minimum of $25, you get free shipping. All I had to do is add two manga volumes in the mix with the box set and I have free shipping. They also had the penguin black classic box set for the same price but it sold out so fast.
I'm going to try take on the mini modern series soon and then I'll come back and compare my rankings with yours, will be interesting to compare! Out of interest, have you read many book boxsets or lists ike this before and which did you find more rewarding? '1001 books to read before you die' is just too darn long for me!
Oh I haven‘t read ‚The Master‘s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master‘s House‘ yet but I felt kind of the same about some of what Paolo Freire said in ‚Pedagogy of the Oppressed‘. I think the message is similar but he talks about class. I read ‚White Fragility‘ at the same time and found DiAngelo‘s approach much more helpful.
This is fab !! I was going to buy the box set a little while ago but might pick up a few of the individual books .The Martin Luther King one I have and loved !!! I have put Albert Camus and John Steinbeck to my list .I have recently purchased Of Mice and Men (read at school and it stuck with meand want to re-read ) and East of Eden as I keep hearing so many great things about it xx Anyhoo's cheers for making this video ..very useful xx 😃
I’m a bit behind on videos but had been waiting for this one so.... I think, as you said, that these are tasters but not necessarily the definitive word on the author, I know that Wendell Berry and Audre Lorde for example are authors I’ve heard great things about whereas it looks like Steinbeck is Steinbeck, he can’t go wrong! Oh and Ginsberg has the best title. This was a great way to try a big variety of authors though and finding new gems like Leonora Carrington who I only just heard of on the channel Tired Mama Tries to Read. I’m sure I’ll pick a few more up next time I come to the U.K. and now I have a better idea which ones I might enjoy, Looking forward to the Vintage mini moderns reviews!
But then there are like people like Anais Nin who I've now read enough of to know that I don't like the way she writes erotica and so I wouldn't ever bother trying again, although her diaries are meant to be good. I reckon I found 6-10 authors who I hadn't read before who I now want to read more so I'm pretty happy with that!
I really enjoy Akutagawa's "In a Grove." I haven't read Roshomon since college, but I recently got a collection of his short stories, so I'm pretty excited to get to that at some point. I remember being interested in the letter by Martin Luther king Jr. when you read it. I'll have to find it somewhere. :)
What an amazing collection of great authors! Have you read much of Carson McCullers? She was a great writer and The Heart is a Lonely Hunter is one of my favorite novels of all time. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it.
Nuff respec' for ploughing through that little lot. I'm still unconvinced that many of them are useful intros to many of these authors. The Kafka is not a good sample of Kafka, same thing Beckett.
For me, any intro will do. I've read Kafka before and so it wasn't really my introduction to him, although I'd say the Kafka in the box set was pretty typical of the other stuff I've read
Persona!ly, I would rather but 3 or 4 books that deserved the word "modern cladsic" than but 50 booms....Most of which cannot sell because they are far from "classic" !
@@danecobain i was always curious on why people decide to change their names because its a big step you know. What made you change your name if you dont mind me asking. Was it because you admired Kurt or something else?

I just sprinkled them in throughout the rest of my reading haha :D
Great video! I just bought 2 of the mini's - enjoying the Daphne Du Maurier book at the mo and I'm glad it brought me to your channel! 👍🏼

You got through all of these so fast! Really interesting to hear you talk about all the standouts. Create Dangerously definitely sounds worth a read.
Think it worked out as three or four months but I was only dipping into them as little palette cleansers between other books :D
I just ordered the box, since it was on sale, for only $15 and I'm looking forward to read these.
Oh wow, that's great value! I bet the shipping cost more than the books! Happy reading :)

Also, Create Dangerously sounds super interesting.
Definitely read some of Steinbeck's work if you can, everything I've read from him has been great
