we had a 98lb, 5'1" Latina as security at my last job.
Once saw her throw a 6'5", 240lb retired Marine, who was getting violent across the waiting room floor, and then pin him down putting his arm so far up behind his head im surprised it didnt pop out of the damn socket.
She quit after hospital policy changed, meaning she couldnt use physical force against a patient unless said patient hit her first.
This was a VA hospital...our patients tend to be military trained with a lot of physical training behind them.

Hospital security story time. I was a high schooler volunteering at my university hospital, doing front desk stuff. Every so often I'd get some angry people, drunks, people on drugs etc. The security teams would always try to round near me so I wouldn't be alone. One night a particularly belligerent guy was starting to cause a scene, and the oldest and smallest of the guards walked up to the guy to take care of him. Long story short, dude tried to pull a knife on the security guard. I still have never seen someone act so fast to this day, as the guard threw this guy into the brick wall like a sack of potatoes. Other guards rushed in to help, I was left speechless behind my desk.

I’m a current security officer, been in this job for a while, and I’ve met *waaaay* too many Zanes. I’ve gotten hurt in fully staffed fights against smaller patients, and learned to never underestimate any patient, at any time. They’ll always surprise you. No one expects the frail grandma to start kicking ass until she does, let alone the actual big guy who can pick me up and throw me. In a situation like this, we’d call as many free techs and nurses that we could find, and just dogpile until something hopefully works. 😅

@@gpettus9508 In Australia we have a program called the NDIS so the sitter is a nurse, CNA, or Support worker to ensure that a person doesn't hurt themselves or others and generally it is for people with disabilities who need high intensity care or intensive care due to extreme challenging behaviors.
My husband works security at a hospital sometimes he comes home limping, because he had to subdue a couple of patients. One of the places was a psych ward and Rehab.
I've worked security myself it can get pretty rough especially if you're not good at diplomacy but sometimes they can still get rough

We once had a 4' 10" 18-year-old girl whose ETOH level was 0.483. She should have been dead. Her alcohol system didn't have enough blood in it. She was fighting us all. By all, I mean the 2 6'5" and 6'4" male cops, 2 equally as big security guards, 2 ED nurses and me. She kept banging her head - rapidly - on and off the top of the gurney. One of the cops put his 2 hands around her neck to stop her banging her head. I yelled at the cop to let go of her neck before he strangled her to death! One of the CNA's got a pillow for her; it didn't stop what she was doing, but at least she had a little more cushion. Fortunately, there were no other patients there that night. After more than 2 hours of struggling to keep her from flying off the gurney, and with her liver slowly processing all of that alcohol, she fell asleep. We took her to CT, which showed no physical damage to her skull and brain. We checked her ETOH level every 2 hours. Believe it or not, she was still alive 24 hours later. She suffered no ill effects from all of that alcohol. Her friends bailed on her and she had no parent or guardian. I spoke with some substance abuse physicians about her, and none had ever seen a living person, let alone one who came in kicking and screaming, with an ETOH level that high. We had Social Services get involved so that she'd have somewhere to go after being discharged. A reminder: the legal limit for alcohol consumption and still be able to drive is less than 0.08. Hers was 0.483.
If this was in the U.S. she exceeded the legal limit at the first drink. You failed to mention how she arrived at the ED?

@@michellehasty1038 it was in the U.S. She wasn't legally allowed to drink alcohol until 21 years of age. According to the police who brought her into the ED, she was allegedly at a party with other teens. She became violent, so the kids called the police, then ran away before they could be arrested for under age alcohol consumption and possession. She was brought into our E.D. by the two police officers mentioned in my story.

Alcohol is a drug, and some people have quirky genetics that gives them some rather startling reactions to various drugs.
I swear to God I went to high school with Zane. He lied about getting up to 108 - the boy was never going to crack 100 in his whole life. He never understood how inept he was, on so many levels. But he was a good guy. Loyal as hell to his Mom and his friends, and any cause he believed in, he was all in on it, Baby! I hope we get to see him here again!

My mom used to work at a state hospital and the stories she has told of security having to restrain residents are just scary. That would usually be 4 huge dudes too. Poor Zane is like Captain America pre serum.
My Gran was less than 5' tall. All of her sons were well over 6'. Not one of them was willing to cross her. For that matter they would look around for her before they said something snarky even after they were adults. It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.

As a security officer, I can confirm these people do really exist.
If you got that many security guards calling in sick, then a few things could be happening A.) Someone isn't enforcing health procedures within security
B) they ain't getting paid enough and "Zane" didn't get the Memo
Or C) they all just happened to get sick at the same time(I know totally likely lol) and Zane has a Super immune system and needs to be studied lol

Reminds me of the time I got asked to be security (with one other guy) for a local event. Mind you, I'm 5'3" 150lb, but we live in a very conservative/religious area and I have lots of piercings/tattoos, wear red contacts-just an overall goth look. I was like...security? Seriously?

I had a shrink ask me if I owned any firearms. I told him that it was none of his business. He told me it was incase he had to rescue me from myself. Then he looked at me and said, "Well it might take a few of us." Made me laugh, bless his heart.

Listen. Sometimes the little ones are the craziest and you know it. I've seen them fight to protect staff with everything they've got. But it's GOT to be easier to be one of our huge security guys that just walks into the doorway and the patient shuts up and sits down.

I can't decide if this is my favorite of all. When I worked psych in the ER, when I first started, I had a security guard who had to be 80 years old and 130 soaking wet and no lie, one arm. I decided he was cannon fodder and if I had to, I would just push him into the patient and run like hell. He was like 6'2 and had really long legs so I thought it was the best I could do in the event of an emergency.

I would love to have these nurses in the ER lol once I fractured my back and the nurse I had got upset with me because i was crying and in pain and being a little snappy and she told me “I haven’t done anything to you ans you’re being really rude to me.”

I have had a few spine pts that were snappy. I had one in Wyoming that was hysterical and crying, “I’m so sorry I’m such a fucking drunk ass bitch I have been so nasty” Snot streamers and everything. She was in severe pain fro a herniated L5/S1. She was in preop just a hot hot mess. I looked her right in the eyes and said I have been in your position three times already. I know what your going through. She was my only case that day and I stuck around pacu and talked to her and her husband. I told em’ it was a bitch of a herniation. We have no idea how she was able to walk. He goes “whiskey.” I looked at her and smiled. Oh yeah she’s one tough ol’ bird.
When your back is fractured it hurts so bad. You need compassion, and drugs, lots of drugs.

Lol omg memories! I'm retired from working forensic psych. I was a specialist dealing with outliers and aggressive patients and taught verbal de-escalation and physical management. There was always a Zane. One thing though I'm not a big guy either. Not 108 lbs little but I'm really short and the patients that I worried about were the little guys. They were fast, wouldn't stay down and were hard to get a hold of. Those big guys? They underestimated me. They had to swing down to reach me (which put them off balance) and when they went down, they stayed down. Point number two....omg if only those shots worked like in the movies. I've seen guys get enough to knock an elephant down and still be fighting an hour later. ER nurses got it harder than I did though. They're in a lot more open environment, more potential weapons, and innocent bystanders and less immediately available staff specifically trained to talk someone down and/or physically manage them safely for both staff and patients.
Oh Lord, years ago I had a patient with no legs so very short. He would come in intoxicated, he actually would come in for lung problems and intoxicated. When he'd get agitated it took 4-5 people to hold him down. Which was pretty good since he had no legs.
Had a naked combative guy that was drinking and on lsd come in handcuffed to the ems stretcher and they had givin him 400mg ketamine and he was still flailing around. Had to give him versed to knock him out long enough to switch him from gurney to the ER bed and put our own restraints on him. He woke up like 45 min later and was sober. I was like how the heck. He didnt speak English except when he asked me "i fukd up?" I was like yup you did lol.
My mom was a security guard at a psych hospital when she was young. She was super tiny. The other security guards used to follow her around because they were worried she'd get hurt. She got transferred to an empty warehouse because the other security guards weren't doing their rounds because they were following her.

At my hospital a code gray is weather and code white is for fighting. I actually witnessed a security guard, who weighed about a buck o five being lifted in the air by a patient twice his size. It took ten people to subdue the guy and get him sedated. The security guy has yet to return.

My ex-husband used to be a security guard in a county hospital about 30 years ago. It was no joke. It was not for the weak.
Lol this reminds me of a scene from Psych. This new detective, Goochberg, ends up hospitalized after chasing a "perp" (he was the victim lmao). Then she came to in the hospital and asked her partner, "Did we get him?" "He was the VICTIM, Goochberg!" "BUT DID WE GET HIM?" "Ya. Ya, we got him."
Scary how common this can be in ERs; in some psych units the nursing staff do the restraining and they can get hurt too. If you don't have an adequate show of force the violent patient knows they have the upper hand. Serious issue.
We had a Security Guard that was sooo nice to everyone that I thought he’d be useless, but one night there was a “situation” and man, he fuzzed up twice his size and actually got mad and it was a sight to see! I never worried about anything after that.
Hahahah we called security once and they said they couldn’t touch the patient so we called the cops to come back us up while we gave haldol lol. Another time I ducked at the right time as a patient threw his IV pump and pole at me in the doorway 😳😝. I have stories. Many stories lol
I didn't want to touch the patient for only $12/hr.
We had a security officer like that, would rather watch a falls risk patient, our whole job for the night, fall instead of just putting a hand on their shoulder until the nurse came in to help.

@@mpluschkitty8181 at the company I was hired at for security of hospitals, we could be fired if we helped hold down a patient, or if simply put out hands out to catch someone especially psych ward. We had to get our own lawyers incase someone tried to say we assaulted them, because in Texas assault is simply touching someone who doesn't want to be touched.
I had one this week just watch the patient ram me into a door multiple times and did nothing. I look at him and said "I'm not putting up with this shit" and called a code grey. Then reported him.

It was shift change and I was coming on after Zane. During my shift briefing he noticed four grown men on camera drinking alcohol in the darkest corner of the parking lot. Outnumbered, we approach them at Zane's discretion and let's just say he says a lot of things that could anger an alcoholic. After Zane gets it all off his chest, he turns to me like "welp, guess imma head to the house". There I stood, outnumbered 4 to 1. 😅

As security personnel at hospitals in my area, I feel this on a personal level. I also have a black belt in origami.
The best er security I worked with was an elderly gentleman. About Zanes size. He was able to talk down and de-escalate everything. The younger, bigger guys all got their butts handed to them sooner or later, but never him. He was amazing

I'm...not sure how to feel about people like Zane. They give it an honest attempt and want to help but they...tend to make things worse by being inept. And they don't have the self-awareness that they are inept. But they honestly truly want to be helpful and think that they can be. It's really hard to deal with at times.
To be fair, when I worked in a care home I held up people who were up to 101kgs and I’m only 45kg! You just do what you’ve got to do and cry about the back pain later 🤣

Where I work, if Zane hit his head, he would first go to employee health where they would insinuate that he's faking it, and ask why he's in a wheelchair, then they would send him to an offsite clinic. At the clinic, doctor would finally do some kind of neuro assessment, and of course the most important thing, the drug test, because you might be high, or drunk, ya know. Lapsed time from injury to neuro assessment? Approximately two hours. The employee survey asks if we would recommend the hospital to family and friends. HELL NO.

And all they could do was sit on top of them and he didn't even move, like an automated bill riding machine. Thank you so much for being you!

Why is this accurate!? This is why a lot more than just security turns up to a code gray at my place.
I've worked ER security and psych unit security for many years. This is sometimes so close to accurate that it is painful. We're always short handed, and they hire so many people who just cant help, that often it is just as cringy as this. They once sent a security team up with a very small middle eastern supervisor and two small women to fight this psych patient and he kicked their butts 🤣
In the ERs, I often find myself working alone! Some of our people have been so spotty that one guard when I did have help would he sleeping in his car and not responding to calls when we were rolling around with the crazies.
I am a reasonably large guy (6 foot, 220) but they hire tiny little people who aren't as useful as the nurses for subduing. It usually is more of a "everyone pile on and grab a limb", that is a huge part of the job, we'll have nurses, security, and whoever happens to be standing around.
This was totally my old hospital. He had one security officer at night when psych patients arrived. It was pointless calling a code.

Did residential for 20 years. One supervisor used hired tiny blond women, exclusively. I hated when a bunch of them were on shift because then I had to intervene when there were behavior issues. I would walk into a group area and see a teen age boy with 3 young woman each on a limb just getting flung around like rag dolls. So me, being a bigger person and not afraid along with a few years of experience jumps into the fray, gets it under control pretty quickly.
Although I don't know what a haldol is, I was pretty sure Austin had hit Zane with it instead of the patient🤣🤣🤣🤣

The security at my hospital says they can't touch patients. There's been plenty of nights that I, a 5'5 130 lbs female, was the biggest person on staff. Thank God on those nights I was only wrestling people a little bit bigger than me. And also, thank God I'm kinda strong 😒
😂 We had Jerry. They took his pepper spray away because his blood sugar would drop and he would get confused. Threw trash can lids and tried to spray the staff 😂

As a petite nurse in the ER, my strength was underestimated many a time. Once I was a proven asset it was funny to them that I would be in the midst of the action. Only when I was pregnant did I abstain from being in the midst of it all. Matter of fact, I had a wonderful, sweet tech who would shadow me. I had no idea b/c he was so silent and one night a patient started going off. As I was backing up to avoid my belly being hit I bumped into him moving forward to take the guy down. That was the night I learned he was a black belt and the word w/the staff was any potential threat that came through the door that I took as a patient, I was to be shadowed😂😂😂 Never wanting anyone to think I was shirking my nursing duties I refused to say uncle on cases I should not have taken. There were some obvious ones I passed on but for the most part I took whatever came through the door. I was so humbled when I discovered the plan to protect me, even the docs got in on it if they weren’t busy. It was the sweetest thing. Those were the days🤣🤣🤣

My son worked for the hospital police in the ER. He's 6'4" and 240lbs. He's a soft spoken bear.
Remembering both my high school delinquent days and a story I was once told about a security on-the-job training course where half the dudes failed because they kept trying to bring their respective mall katanas to work, I was totally ready for Zane to go in way too aggro and actually injure the guy.
I work in mental health. My experience in hospitals is: the more security you have, the more security you need.
I’ve asked security to back off on multiple occasions because their presence was escalating my client. One time I had to get the ER doctor to order them to leave.
