The film reference in the diner at the end was Alien and it was the same actor John Hurt in both films. I also read the reason why Lonestar was dressed as Indiana Jones is George Lucas was okay with most of the spoof references but didn't want the hero dressed as Han Solo - so they dressed him as Indy instead :)

and the reference after that was an ode to The Planet of the Apes.

Valium is a drug that helps people sleep which is why Prince Valium was so sleepy. Great reaction! When they first met Yogurt, it was like The Wizard of Oz when they met Oz.
Prince Valium was also made to look like an old character from the sunday comics page. He was first introduced in 1937 in a comic series called Prince Valiant In The Days of King Arthur or more commonly just called Prince Valiant. The creator, a man named Hal Foster, originated the story and did the drawing of it until 1971. The story covers a variety of events from the history of England and is still being drawn by a variety of artists still today.
And the name Prince Valium is also a reference to the classic comic strip, Prince Valiant. Interestingly, Lydia Deetz also jokingly refers to her father as Prince Valium in Beetlejuice.
You know, all the times I've seen this movie before, I only just now think I recognized who played Prince Valium. I didn't recognize him with the wig. I think that's Jm J. Bullock from the sitcom Too Close for Comfort, where Ted Knight played a cartoonist who rents the downstairs apartment of his house to his grown daughters. Bullock played Monroe, the daughters' annoying, bumbling friend.
You've finally seen the last of the classic Star Wars movies!
Also, little fun fact: The practical and special effects were considered really advanced and great when the movie was released... because it was Industrial Light and Magic, George Lucas' Studio, that did the special effects.
This film flopped in theaters, but later went on to sell tons of videos and discs. Mel Brooks now claims it’s his most successful film.

Not a fan of Mel Brooks movies; like any movie, it depends on your particular taste. I find them better than Valium, I'm alsleep in 10 minutes but I managed to stay awake through the reaction because I like the channel.
Fun fact, after Dark Helmet says "Why don't we take a 5 minute break?" it's exactly 5 minutes until the Spaceballs are seen again.
5:25 - It might be more accurate to say Naboo is a ripoff Druidia, since Spaceballs predates the prequels.
10:25 - Reference fun, Jupiter 2 was the ship in Lost in Space
19:30 - I think Ford Galaxy is also a model of car.
22:55 - One bit about the Comb the Desert scene I never noticed until someone else pointed it out: Dark Helmet is using the megaphone to talk to Sandurz who's next to him but shouting at the guys who are far away.
24:47 - Trivia: Rick Moranis/Dark Helmet improvised the entire doll scene after hearing about the idea.

Finally, George Lucas let Mel Brooks use his Industrial Light and Magic company for the special effects in exchange for promising no merchandise be made for the movie which is why that whole bit was in there with Yogurt.
As a guy in my 40s who never really had a meaningful relationship with my father growing up. Only just now am I arriving at a place in my life where I can start to try to understand the meaning of that.

In addition to the Alien movie reference the beach scene with the maid's head and hand holding the handle and particularly the Apes on horseback is a reference to the original 1968 Planet of the Apes final scene with the Statue of Liberty half buried.
There was also Star Trek references with the Vulcan neck pinch and Snotty (referring to Scotty) using the transporter.
A big reference when the 4 of them approached the giant statue of Yogurt this is a Wizard of Oz scene closely matched as when Dorothy, the scarecrow, the tin man and the cowardly lion first see the giant hologram of an evil Wizard before her dog Toto pulled back the curtain to where the real Wizard of Oz was.
"Airplane", "Top Secret" and "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" are all really funny spoof movies.
For this sort of style of movie, I highly recommend "Airplane!" and "Top Secret!"
THE GOONIES is another movie perfect for the two of you. It has passed the test of time too. Funny but also heart warming lol.
The movie was originally going to be titled "Planet Moron". But there was already a space spoof comedy at the time titled "Morons from Outer Space". So Mel Brooks decided that the title should have the word "Space" in it, but he didn't know what to put at the end. Until one day, he accidentally spilled coffee on himself and reacted by uttering out, "Balls!" And at that moment, a crew member advised Mel to call the movie "Spaceballs. "
George Lucas agreed to let Mel Brooks make a parody but insisted that there be no Spaceballs merch, so Brooks went ahead and put merch all over the movie but not available in reality
Can you imagine what the movie prop merch would be worth now if some of the stagehands had managed to smuggle some of it out? Unfortunately I am also sure that Lucas likely had a representative personally witness the destruction of the merch from the movie.
That's a good one. Another iconic one of his is "Robin Hood Men in Tights".

Btw. The castle was a rip on Disney’s castle. It was made king before Naboo existed.
They also had the okay from GL to make it and he enjoyed it. ILM, the special effects company Lucas made, did special effects for this.
There were references to Planet of the Apes, Alien, Indiana Jones and so many more.
Also, Ford Galaxy is an American car.
I know the movie literally word for word so I could tell soooo much.
I wouldn't say the budget for this movie was small. Perhaps relative to some of today's movies but in 1987 most of the top films had a budget between 17 and 27 million dollars. The budget for Spaceballs was $22.7 million.
1. When this movie came out Naboo didn't yet exist.
2. As previously mentioned the diner scene primarily refers to Alien, but they combined it with a Michigan J Frog cartoon.
3. The beach scene at the end plays havoc with the original Planet of the Apes.
4. Mel Brooks movies aren't like anything else. If you want more spoofy fun, or unmatched comedy, watch another Mel Brooks film.
5. One Lucas condition placed on this film: no merchandising.
Mel Brooks has said that he saved a lot of money on sound effects by having Michael Winslow, the man you correctly identified as having also been in the Police Academy movies, do all the sound effects himself.
The scene where Yogurt says "open it before you eat it", it was a message given to Lone Starr enclosed in a fortune cookie, hence the joke.
I've said since the first time i saw this movie, Brooks named him Colonel Sandurz specifically so he could make the "Whatzamatter Colonel Sandurz, chicken?" joke.
When I was a student I had a Casio scientific calculator named "DOT MATRIX" 😅 I don't know why but every time I look at a scientific calculator I remember this movie 😅 I don't know if someone already commented it yet, but one of the experts in charge of the original Star Wars special effects worked on this movie, actually Industrial Light and Magic was the company hired to do the effects here. Lucas agreed to make this movie on the condition that Brooks didn't sell real merchandising. Great video, thanks for sharing!

George Lucy's gave Mel Brooks permission to parody Star Wars but with one condition. They were not allowed to produce merchandise. That's why there's so many merchandise references in the movie instead. Also the stomach bursting out of the chest was from the film Alien. Same actor too Sir John Hurt
The hilarious thing is that Rogue One totally stole the whole "planetary shield" gag.
Regarding the creature singing with the Hat & Cane, it's from this- (Michigan J. Frog is an animated cartoon character from the Warner Bros.' Merrie Melodies film series. Originally a one-shot character, his only appearance during the original run of the Merrie Melodies series was as the star of One Froggy Evening, written by Michael Maltese and directed by Chuck Jones.
They break the 4th wall through out this movie.😂😂

Others have explained the Alien reference at the end. You also seemed puzzled by the apes who encountered Mega Maid's head on the beach. That was a reference to the very first Planet of the Apes movie from the 1970s starring Charlton Heston. It's also a pretty good movie for its time and it still holds up.
(37:12) You've already been told that this is a reference to the 1979 movie "Alien", but the most amazing thing about this thing is that the actor who pops the alien out of his chest is the same here and in Alien (John Vincent Hurt , the younger ones will remember him for his role as the wand seller Mr. Ollivander in the Harry Potter saga). However, the other actors in this group are obviously different from those in Alien.
I watched the commentary on the DVD and Mel Brooks wanted the movie to be the ship going across the screen for the entirety! 😆😆
The alien scene is from the Alien movie, the actual guy in that movie reprises his role for that scene! 😉😉

Just an FYI, Prince Valium, the reason why he always seemed to be tired and yawning all the time is that his name is the name of the medical drug known as Oxycodone. A very powerful seditive. Less powerful then the drug known as Kedimine. The "not again" is in refrence to the first Alien movie. And Lucas and Rodenberry both gave permission for this film. And lastly, the "there goes the planet" was a slight jab at the original Planet Of the Apes movies in the 60's and 70's.
As some have said, when Yogurt fades out of the spaceship after telling Captain Lonestar he was a prince.....that fade includes the words, "what a world, what a world" which is from The Wizard of Oz (1939). The space diner scene with the alien belly creature is from the movie Alien (1979). The humanoid monkeys riding horses on the beach are from the movie Planet of the Apes (1968). All of these movies are major classics to be sure.
A movie similar to this, and even though it is rated PG, the humor is a bit more adult (and more shocking for first time viewers)..... is Airplane (1980). Not sure if Lewis would fully appreciate the humor in this movie (at his age) or not. He might. The humor is at least PG-13 and is even approaching an "R" rating, due to blatant sexual suggestions, double entendres and innuendos plus comedic illicit drug usage by the most unsuspecting and upstanding people you can imagine. A laugh-at-yourself, politically incorrect movie..... that could not be made today.
so, Spaceballs is a sci-fi spoof based mostly on star wars, Mel Brooks wanted to her ILM for the VFX, and in return George Lucas forbid Mel Brooks from releasing any merchandise on Spaceballs because he feared it would look too much like star wars merch, that's the reason behind the "SPACEBALLS: THE ... " all over xD
Mel Brooks has to be a time traveller because there is no other way to explain the perfect timing of a Disneyland joke 25 years before Disney bought the Star wars Franchise.
This was made in 1987, way before Naboo. The Prequels did not come out until the 1990's. Mel Brooks has other funny movies like Blazing Saddles (about Cowboys), Young Frankenstein, The Producers and History of the World.

It doesn't really matter if you haven't seen say Flash Gordon, or Wizard of Oz prior to this film, the references to them will just go over your head. However, it is a real real pity that you saw this film before Alien and (the original) Planet of the Apes as the parodies in Spaceballs act as big spoilers to those films.
I feel like this movie predicted Star Wars would be owned by Disney. When they were singing the seven dwarfs' song he asked when did get to Disneyland. Foreshadowing
The "merchandising" bit - the story goes that when Mel Brooks approached George Lucas for his blessing to spoof Star Wars, Lucas agreed on the condition that there could not be any Spaceballs merchandise.
Also the black guy on the pic in the sand who says WE HAVEN'T FOUND........ Is the actor who played Tuvok in Star Trek Voyager
The scene where they get the cassette for the movie, if you look closely at the other movies on the same rack, they're all Mel Brooks classics. History of the World Part 1, The Producers, etc...

Great movie. If I recall correctly, i believe Mel Brooks was one of the few people George Lucas trusted with making a parody of his movies. Though I could be wrong, after all there's a family guy version of the original trilogy too out there. I'd also recommend Robin Hood Men in tights. It's another Mel Brooks comedy that's really good. ^^

It's not a true spoof but a homage to romantic fantasy is The Princess Bride you both would love that film!
oh yes, I also highly recommend THE PRINCESS BRIDE for you both to watch. Spaceballs was funny to me back in the eighties but now it just seems dated. much funnier movies out there. Hard to suggest some because they may be too adult if you know what I mean.

Young Frankenstein is the best Mel Brooks spoof movie. Keeps fairly faithful to the plot of the classic Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein films. Uses the same scientific props from the original.
Given you asked about similar movies, Terry Pratchett's The Color of Magic (2008) TV miniseries is kinda along this line though a bit more like Monty Python's Holy Grail type humor. It's also not nonstop jokes like in Spaceballs but there are certainly multiple times in the series with this type of humor.
Interestingly enough a joke you made was a thought. Mel brooks said if he could get away with it he’d have made the entire movie just Spaceball 1 flying by

ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) the same special effects company that made starwars did the effects for spaceballs, George Lucus gave his concent to the film as long as there was no merchandising.....which is why merchandising is a big thing in the film itself....
that is from "THE ALIEN," but I warn you it is a terrifying movie lol.
'It's a rip off of Naboo.' If anything it's the other way around. Naboo first featured in The Phantom Menace (1999), Spaceballs was made in 1987. I can understand the confusion however, given the retroactive insert of Naboo into Return of the Jedi. For the record, Haydyn Christian wasn't in Return of the Jedi in 1983 either.
This was the best mel brooks film imo. Other good ones: men in tights, young frankenstein, to be or not to be, blazing saddles, history of the world I. I can't believe you didn't get the Alien reference in the diner. I'd only seen the movie recently but it's such a cult classic that you know about it even without watching. Like knowing about the terminator. Anywho lots of fun. My personal favorite was michael winslow's part (yes he was in police academy). May the swartz be with you and keep watching mel brooks. You won't regret it
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
I'm late to watch this reaction but here are a couple fun facts about the movie. As this movie is an obvious Star Wars spoof, Mel Brooks had to ask George Lucas for permission to make the movie. George Lucas said yes but also gave Mel Brooks to caveats:
1. No Spaceballs Merchandise. Yogurt selling merch, and all the merch strewn about the movie, is a mock to this caveat George Lucas set for this movie.
2. Lone Starr was not allowed to look/dress like Han Solo. Mel Brooks mocked this by having him dress like Indiana Jones; Harrison Ford from another Lucasfilms production.
Mel Brooks followed both rules George Lucas set for him, though he mocked Lucas with his own rules. Lucas also provided Brooks with the studio used to produce Star Wars. Filming of the opening stretch, the Spaceball1 model scene at the beginning, and scene where Eagle5 crash landed on the desert moon of Vega were all made possible from Lucas's studio as the same techniques were present in Star Wars.
Jupiter 2 was reference to ship on Lost in Space.

'Better Off Dead' w/ John Cusack. You'll love it. Movie references....'Alien' and the original 'Planet of the Apes'. Both are a must see.
If you're referring to the humor style, this film was made by Mel Brooks so you could watch some of his other films as they carry the same style of humor even though they're not all spoofs of movies. If you mean parody type movies then Scary Movie (all of them), Not Another Teen Movie, Date Movie, Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, Vampires Suck, Meet The Spartans, Dance Flick, The Starving Games, and Superfast! are parodies of specific genre movies (horror films, teen films, romantic comedies, fantasy, disaster, Twilight, 300, dance films, Hunger Games, and Fast & The Furious specifically) similar to how this is a parody of Star Wars (and the Brady Bunch movies are parodies of the tv show). You might enjoy them! Not specifically parodies, but the films Isn't It Romantic and Senior Year starring Rebel Wilson do poke fun at various themes within the teen film and romantic comedy film genres, but aren't specifically parodies of any films and are instead unique stories of their own. So you might like those as well. I can't think of any more right off the top of my head, but I definitely share with you an enjoyment for this type of humor.
I'm glad you enjoyed Spaceballs. It's definitely a favorite of mine that I remember watching quite often as a kid with friends. There's so many funny moments, but my favorite is definitely the part where they put in Spaceballs The Movie and start talking about the present moment which is happening on the monitor behind them and Dark Helmet is all kinds of confused. The 4th wall breaks in this film are as funny as the ones in Disney's The Emperor's New Groove which I think is why I like that film so much, too. I haven't seen every film that's parodied in Spaceballs, but at the time of watching it as a kid I was at least aware of the references because they came from movies that were super popular at the time. The alien popping out of the man's body in the cafe is from the film Aliens, which I hadn't seen at the time (my parents said no), but because the film was really successful I did hear about the film on other tv shows and from friends whose parents let them go see it so I got the reference, but there were others that as a kid I didn't get and there was definitely jokes that went over my head that I didn't realize were there until I rewatched it as a teen and then later as a young adult. It's definitely a movie that you can watch over and over again and pick up other references on, however subtle. You're correct that the guy making the noises was featured in Police Academy. He was quite popular in the 1980s due to his ability to make so many different sounds and so had brief spots in films, tv shows, and tv commercials. But I think Police Academy is what he's best known for with a character who makes those sounds.

Non stop silliness
The scene at the diner when the guy with the chest burst scene well here’s the story behind the scenes! In 1979 sci-fi adventure/horror movie called Alien Starring Sigourney Weaver well the guy in the movie is British actor John Hurt and in a honorary performance of a British actor who sometimes has to speak English in some of his movies mainly this one! Anyways when the crew are eating a meal John has trouble and then all of a sudden he’s laying on the table and guess what happened that’s right a little alien pops out of his stomach and runs off that’s why when he sees the alien,John’s character in this movie uh no not again! On another scene in the movie the parts of the ship that fall down on that beach and the maid looking ship only falls are a maid’s head And part of the handle of the vacuum and then 2 Apes on horseback and sees them with outta the maid’s nose they they say space balls and then say oh shoot there goes the planet a reference to Planet Of The Apes because the maid’s head head and hand kinda looks like a broken head and torch of the Statue Of Liberty 🗽
FLUSHED, and THE HEDGE are two animated movies that I still find halirous. Wonderful plots lol.

I think the voice for the self destruct was the same one on Star Trek:TNG.
Touching spoof territory, you should definitely watch Galaxy Quest.
In the beginning, the ship is so big that the music is struggling to keep up with it as it passes.
It can't be a ripoff of Naboo because we first see that planet in Phantom Menace which came out in 1999. This movie came out in 1987

Hi Louis and Kev. 😀 I enjoyed watching your reaction to Spaceballs. There is no spaceballs 2, but Spaceballs is a movie that is part of the Mel Brooks movies. There is "Blazing Saddles" a Western parody, "Young Frankenstein", "The History of the World Part 1" & "Spaceballs". The end of History of the World Part 1 shows a trailer for History of the World Part 2, but there never was a part 2.
The "Ford Galaxy" is a car, a large sedan that was made in the 1960s. Similar to the Chevy Impala.
Maybe also a reference to Harrisson Ford, but if you google *Ford Galaxy* you will see the car.

I should tell you that Spaceballs was made in the 1980s, whereas Star Wars Episode One was made in the late 1990s and came out in 1999. So, Naboo came long after Planet Druidia.

The guy with the creature inside him was from "Alien". The song and dance the little alien did was from "Looney Tunes" cartoons "The Singing Frog". 🐸

BTW - Mel Brooks also made the "Get Smart" television show, which was a spy genre spoof, but was also just a great tv show.
Don Adams who played Maxwel Smart was also the voice of Inspector Gadget in the cartoon series.
Now these characters are portrayed by Steve Carell and Mathew Broderick respectively, but Don Adams was the original. He also was the voice of "Inch high private eye", another cartoon.
You guys should try and do a reaction to Get Smart, the television series. 😁
