    Cohh @ 2:21:00 comparing Rogue Trader to BG3: "BG3 feels a little basic in some ways..."
    Yeah man. That's just 5th Edition D&D. Compared to systems like Pathfinder or Rogue Trader, 5e is like bowling with bumpers on. The fact that BG3 feels as deep and fun as it does is a credit to Larian and how they adapted 5e for their game.

    • @enightc
      @enightc 9 місяців тому

      @@TheDoctor4221 BG3 is basic in that if you know some basics of 5E, you can build your team and whatever you build can go through the game on the highest difficulty without issues, Pathfinder and Rogue Trader, you need actual builds, because there is so much more mechanics in what does what that you need to read everything to even get an understanding.
      Both Great games. But one is definitely more basic than the other, again not a negative, both can be a positive.
      BG3 to me is better because it makes it accessible for everyone, Rogue Trader to me is better because it makes me think about every upgrade.
      So if you like CRPG, play both, they all add something the other doesn't.

      @@brilobox2 Yea the allowing Chris Judge the previous year to talk for so long is what I assume made them want to force speeches to be faster, but there definitely could've been more time given to the winners to speak, just be reasonable about it. Hell, all award shows need to just like have a text segment for the nominees to fill out for who they want to thank instead of having to thank 1 billion people during their speech and actually say something more poignant. Then they can just roll credits basically as they're walking off stage for the people who they wanted to thank.

    The CoD devs responding negatively to Christopher Judge is the perfect example of being handed an easy W and turning it into a massive L. All they had to do was join in on the joke and poke a little bit of fun at themselves over a fairly innocuous criticism which happens to be 100% true. It would have cost them nothing and garnered them at least some amount of public praise.

      Different company tbh (Arkane Lyon, even though the founder relocated from France to Austin and then left the company in 2017), plus (reportedly) like 70% of Arkane Austin had left the company in between Redfall and when they were assigned to help with the shit show known as Fallout 76. Redfall was made by a nearly completely different company, even when it comes to Arkane Austin.

  • @ukmaxi
    @ukmaxi 10 місяців тому +12

    Kinda wrong about the Arkane thing. Arkane Lyon still has its own independent management and operates under 'Arkane Studios SASU' as well as being a separate team/office of people, Lyon is also the original Arkane studio before 'Arkane Studios LLC' (i.e. Arkane Austin) was opened. Sure, they exist under the same umbrella of the Arkane name, but their have different direction and different management (Zenimax/Bethesda aside). If there was a hierarchy within Arkane though, Lyon would still be at the top/head of that hierarchy.

    • @NF_Redux
      @NF_Redux 10 місяців тому +3

      Lyon made Dishonored Series and Deathloop, Austin made Prey & Redfall. the only misstep Lyon has made made was when Zenimax had them come up with Youngblood with MachineGames. i know Deathloop is divisve, but i think Lyon hasn't made a bad game they've had total control over. i'm looking forward to Blade.

    • @synthiandrakon
      @synthiandrakon 10 місяців тому +1

      I think the broader point is, it's not like arkane Austin was a bad studio before redfall. They made prey which is arguably my favourite arkane game, poor management lead to them making a bad game not untalented developers. This isn't something Lyon separated from or immune to.

    • @ukmaxi
      @ukmaxi 10 місяців тому +2

      @@synthiandrakon Well, the bad management came from Arkane through the studio/game direction. As well as being told (at the time) by Zenimax to make a highly profitable game. From what it sounds, the game director(s) of Redfall at Austin had their heads in the sand with regards to its issues.

    No idea why the CoD devs are offended by the campaign comment. The criticism isn't even directed at them. It's directed at the CoD management who decided to not let the devs create a big campaign this year and instead forced them to focus on the multiplayer. If I was a ground level dev who would love to create a big campaign but wasn't allowed to do so by management, then I would be totally cool with the comment that was made.

    What they could do, if they didn't want to make any changes, is to just change the name of the show. Games Show, Game Announcements..... so if the awards are not gonna be the prominent most important part (which they should on Game AWARDS) just dont let the audience expect an awards show then. Market it differently. I mean then it's not a "cool show" anymore, but they made it happen this way.

    At this point I've accepted that it's turned more into an alternate E3 than a full awards show, but I really wish there was an orchestral medley for the Soundtrack nominees. Music is incredibly important to the gaming experience and having it relegated to one of the snub categories really disappointed me as a musician. If there's time for promotional performances and giving devs so much time on stage to talk about games that won't be coming out for 2+ years then Geoff can squeeze in 5 mins to celebrate such an important part of the medium.
    Also well-deserved sweep from BG3 (and AW2's strong performance as well), personally I wanted Ben Starr to win performance but if it couldn't be him then Neil is an excellent pick instead.

      I've seen the game awards as a replacement for E3 for a few years now. E3 is basically dead and summer games fest doesn't really replace it since it's so spread out. They should call it "a games celebration" or something since they rush past so many of the awards as if it where a side thing they only do because they have to.

    What Cohh described happening to Hardcore wow when SoD came out is what's killed my personal interest in Classic. It seems like the model is seasonal, but in a way that segments the population in a weird way. (Unlike seasons in PoE, which forces people to all restart at the same time). Whereas retail has a seasonal feel with patch updates bringing people back in waves but fundamentally everyone's character/server/progress stays in the same place.

    I 100% agree with cohh in regards to the TGA Show:
    - Amount of ads was fine! And I'm rather critical of the amount of ads, generally speaking.
    - length of the show was good! Could stretch a bit longer if necessary, but if possible, stick with this.
    - the additional segments like Heilung and the orchestra are worth keeping. Just don't overdo it with them. Intermezzo yes, but don't distract from the original purpose.
    Which brings me to:
    - hand out the frickin awards on stage and let them talk! Don't cut them off so aggressively. Ofc, moderate it, so it doesn't stretch for 15min each. But either an award needs it be cut bcs it's irrelevant or it's worth being on stage. ESPECIALLY indie game of the year wtf. Give them their once in a lifetime stage.
    - if anything, cut down on the trailers. They were good! And I enjoyed them, but if you need the time for the awards, and can't cut more typical ads, then omit a trailer or two. You have SGF for that.

    Liked the game of the year of awards enough with the live performances, but definitely agree acceptance speeches need so much more time per award, with the presenters having less time to present it. Only other thing I'd change is them leaning into gaming industry directors, actors, developers or studios to announce the awards instead of hollywood actors. Feels like they are ashamed sometimes to rely on the faces and names of the gaming industry alone to bring the crowd and need to stuff it with actors to get more viewers. Like having the creators of past game of the years to announce future ones would be dope. Overall respect the goals of the awards and Keighley so always wish em well on future years.

    the thing about BG3, as someone described it somewhere, is not really cinematics/voiced and mocaped, but that in attempt to create DnD based game they created an immersive sim
    for a cRPG fan, any Owlcat game, even Pathfinder games, are deeper as cRPGs in comparison BG3, which is still a complex cRPG for general audience (or for newish one), but normal (not basic really, but normal) for hardcore cRPG audience (mainly because it is based on 5e, which is intended to be "basic", for "general" audience, for which it beyond complex btw, for that broader audience, that would never otherwise play any cRPG because of complexity, which is proven fact, they don't). I absolutely adore uber-complex cRPG, spreadsheet of character creator of Pathfinde that 90% of BG3 audience would probably quit or not even touch, as I will sink hundrend of hours in Rogue Trader as a hardcore cRPG with more complex systems, like nerd out more than BG3, but unique thing about BG3 is that it is an immersive sim (idk intentionally or not)

      In what way? BG3's level up system was very basic for the CRPG genre with very little customization. Inventory management was a mess especially by act 3 when you have an assortment of items that could be useful but the game doesn't mark every important item as a quest item, also it marks some junk items as quest items even though they never have a use. Atleast 10 hours of my playthrough must have been spent shifting items between characters or scrolling through a hoard of items looking for the one specific item I need at that moment.
      Also, yes its fully voice acted but the dialogue suffered for it, many times you might have 3 or 4 dialogue options but any option you pick will get the exact same response or the whole conversation will just loop around on itself reusing voice lines. Also the game falls off a cliff after act 2, act 3 isn't just a drop in quality its actually unfinished, there are many bugs and unfinished questlines. I had characters telling me off for things I never did or they would talk about events that never happened, like when Gale randomly decided he was in a deep romance with me or when Gales wizard friend appeared in camp and didn't leave for the rest of the game just saying something like "shh she's coming" every time i talked to him etc just so much wacky stuff. BG3 is still a great game despite these flaws but Rogue Trader from what I've played so far is just as good.

      Can't rely on 5E rulebook either, because they made changes to the ruleset. Sure now you have up to date wikis to find that info, but that's still a huge no no for me, when you have to rely on 3rd party resources, to have any idea how to build your characters.
      The level up system of Pathfinder (and Rogue Trader) games should be a standard, in how much information you have available on what you get at what level. Even in that, I can't remember if you can see full lists of available spells and feats on any given level, but you really should be able to.

      @@jepeman yeah I love having to decide my entire character from level 1? You don't even need to optimize like that in baldurs gate 3. They don't tell you cause they don't want you overwhelmed by tons of irrelevant information. By showing every level up at the start you take away all the joy of discovery in leveling up

      @@tonyjpotts inventory management is equally bad in rogue trader. In bg3 they at least let you sort by rarity and can easily tell what are quest items and what aren't. Dialogue in rogue trader is so needlessly dense, without any voice acting it's more of a visual novel than a strategy game. You are likely not finished rogue trader the game is massive, but judging by owlxats other games I wouldn't be surprised if the final acts weren't equally jank.

      @@passdoutcouchpotatosI mean people who are invested in character builds like this kind of system. That being said I'm level... 10? and I just pick a lot of stuff at random. Made an Operator, saw there was a skill that let me use Int for social skills (which wasn't recommended, I kind of hate the series suggesting what to pick) and I haven't optimized in any way and am doing fine on Hard difficulty.
      That being said I hope the discussion isn't becoming (Larian made the penultimate CRPG, I'll now get irked at any other game being considered better in different ways.) Solasta I still consider a better DnD experience mechanically, especially with Spider Climb and Fly working as intuitively as it does over BG3.

    Im guessing Cohh has never payed attention to rockstar marketing in the last 15 years. They always do a reveal cinematic/story trailer first, then they do their 40 minute deep dives and thats when you see all the stuff hes asking for. You cannot say they are playing it safe, just watching a reveal trailer.

    I don't care about game announcements. I can watch them anywhere. And for the ppl from around the world to meet and discuss their work, that's special.
    I won't watch it anymore, because of the way they treat the devs and game ppl. Never again, I'm going to stick to the Golden Jiystick and smaller award ceremonies like before. Anyway, I only went to see BG3 this year

      In fact, previous GTAs also have many mini games, even if they are less than the Yakuza series (this game is the king of side content).
      One possible new activity in that trailer is the Mud Run event, which is the event in Florida where people drive a car through the deep mud, sometimes westling.

    just stop complaining so much about the music or giving speeches for every award, first of all who cares if they play funny music, it's his show and people like it, second - many people couldn't make it for the award as it wasn't worth it to travel across the world just for a 2 minute acceptance speech that devs probably don't even like doing cuz it's uncomfortable and scripted
