    This is so important for families to watch. It can really make or break the choice for the loved one to make the next step.

      Pot is no good either, it can bring someone way down in addiction just as much as any other drug can, it's very addictive and mentally harmful to those who are pronned to mental health conditions

    Hello from France, I love your videos, the no-nonsense approach and absence of judgment on all sides really is a blessing! That's why I'd like to ask you this question: my partner is addicted to alcohol and also uses marijuana and cocaine problematically, he is not in denial at all and we often have long, reasoned out discussions about his issues and what he is going to do about it. The problem is, he never actually puts his money where his mouth is, he can even detail a really great recovery plan with a glass of liquor in one hand and a joint in the other. He also has trouble making appointments but doesn't want me to help him (and I respect that, I just give him info). He actually takes steps to go see a counselor or contact a rehab centre once every couple of weeks but always gives up halfway through (whilst talking about the issue relatively rationally as I said above).
    Could you help me understand why this is the case?

    • @PutTheShovelDown
      @PutTheShovelDown  2 роки тому +2

      He has has the substance, his body is calm enough to think rationally. It's during this time that he knows something needs to change. When he's not using, he's in withdrawal and it's hard to think straight.

    Thank you for this! What method do you think works best for people who aren’t exactly pro therapy or pro counseling? My SO has said many times he doesn’t think therapy would help him for mental health at all even though he knows he needs to cut down drinking.

    I am actually curious, have you ever encountered families or spouses, who are just content with the addiction? That it is a "normal" part of life, instead of something needed to be changed?

    • @PutTheShovelDown
      @PutTheShovelDown  4 роки тому +1

      A. Ye most definitely! We’ve seen it all, but those types situations are the worst. It’s almost impossible to get someone clean in that circumstance.

    • @AYe-ly2yo
      @AYe-ly2yo 4 роки тому

      @@PutTheShovelDown I mean, are the addicts happy in those situations? If they are truly happy and content with it, why change?

    • @AYe-ly2yo
      @AYe-ly2yo 4 роки тому +1

      @@PutTheShovelDown have you seen addicts who are just content being an addict? Like they rather just put up with the addiction for as long as their life is, instead of changing?

    • @PutTheShovelDown
      @PutTheShovelDown  4 роки тому +5

      A. Ye yes, I’ve seen that but it’s usually because they either don’t realize how much better they’ll feel without it, or they’re scared of getting clean, or they think they’re so bad off that they will never be able to get sober.

    I think I'm doing something similar with my SO. We have agreed to an over night so we can have Christmas morning with the baby. I know staying sober for him will be really, REALLY hard. He offered to go to a neighbors house (for our safety/comfort) to spend the night if he just couldn't NOT drink. My first reaction was, "If you're leaving, why are we here?" but then I realized 2 things. 1)he was taking US into account for once, and 2) HE made the plan. So I decided that we would stay to help reinforce that as a POSITIVE step (him thinking about us for once). Am I on the right track? Is that similar to what you were talking about? Any other advice? Thank you for all that you do! For myself, but much more so for his son.
