I recently found an old Raleigh Nottingham frame that was trashed so I took it home and I was able to save the crank, emblem , and handlebars. Everything else was damaged. But it’s awesome to be able to keep these parts and clean them up and possibly use them one day!
The socket/vise worked perfectly on the early 60s Raleigh Record I’m restoring for my uncle. Couldn’t have done it without your help!

A field/home method from old Soviet bike manuals. Partially unscrew the nut so it's still on the pin but covers its end. Then hit it with a rubber mallet or a hammer through a piece of rubber. The nut is thicker and made of harder steel and it spreads the strike over the threads so you have less chances to damage the pin.
+Sergey Galin use a piece of hardwood or thick scrap metal :)

What I do is just slightly loosen the nut so there's just a small gap between it and the crank. I put a second nut on top the original one if the thread is too long. That way the pin does not really get bent and will be reusable. If you're lucky, that is.

Nice. I have used the master brown clamp method and it works well. Sweet tool like this is the way if you have the means.

put the nut back on about half way then with a piece of timber and a hammer. then just hit it

my first 10 speed was delighted with a hotter pin. I was about 12 years old in the mid 70's. I remember use to beat that thing, you know begging a teenager back in those days, mostly being stupid, but that is a good advice you give. thank you very much
tried the socket method using a c clamp on a 60's Robin Hood with success. Tried it on my recently acquired 1970 Ranger and just ended up with a mangled pin even after using a torch! Oh well, I just lubed it in place with WD40 and then some machine oil.
You could use a g clamp and socket or anything like a big bush inside the g clamp, Ian UK
If you wedge a socket under a 2x4 or even a dumbbell place the bike so the weight is on the plank/dumbell and whack the top it'll shoot out real easy. Mine was stuck real stuck, even started to bend too and this worked. Bikeman4u I like how you show a variety of methods it is of the upmost help.
It always helps to add a little penetrating oil to both sides of the cotter pin a while before trying the removal process, as I have found a little lube makes for an easier job. I just removed a cottered all-steel cranks and twin chainrings; (a HEAVY combo) off an old Carlton made Raleigh step-through that I bought on ebay 4 or 5 years ago. I used a 20-pound vice and socket technique but needed a foot-long piece of steel gas pipe to turn the vice handle. THAT extra leverage and oil combination worked like a charm!
I was fortunate my Carlton made Raleigh was more modern threaded, and a 68 x 113 Shimano bottom bracket cartridge turns oh so sweet,... on Shimano late 70's mtb aluminum cranks, 40T chainring, and a White's "Trials" single speed freewheel. Wheels are Dura Ace Hubs with Mavic Open Pro Rims, and Serfas 700 x 32 tires. So much lighter now, and it really moves on my 66-year-old legs!
...a bit of some old but solid components, with even older frame, and an older me too! 🙂
Working on a Schwinn Unicycle crank. Had pretty much the same idea as suggested with a socket and clamp but before doing something stupid, searched till I found this. Put two nuts back on the pin to save the threads. The clamp was starting to take some significant effort so I figured, what the heck, give it a tap. Popped loose right away so thanks guys.

I am a new owner of an old Dunelt bicycle and am facing this exact same problem. And yes, my first instinct was to whack it with a hammer, which did not work. I don't have a Park cotter pin press but, I'm hoping an ordinary C- clamp and socket will work to press it out.

When I removed mine on an old Sears 3 speed I loosened the nut but left it on the pin .
That way I could use a hammer to tap it out without mushrooming the threads .
I like the socket idea . Since I don't have a removal tool like that if I ever want to take it apart again I think I will use a socket and a large "C " clamp .

If you're working on British bikes, like the Raleigh with the HERON chainring, you should invest in British standard wrenches.
A product called Liquid Wrench can be very helpful in these cases, though it can be hard to find sometimes. Look for it in hardware stores and just follow the label directions. The suggested socket and clamp technique looks like a winner. Avoid hitting a bolt or pin without a nut on it to protect the threads.
I'm glad I found this. I'm restoring one that was a garage kept one, but then it was given away, left in the rain... :,( but making it electric. :3

Too bad Park doesn't make that tool any more. I made one out of a HF mc chain breaking tool. Works a treat!
I just put a piece of 2 by 2 on the screw end and knock that with a hammer or mallet.. the wood is soft enough to push the pin out and not damage the screw
my question is how does the crank arm come off the chain ring thanks. jason
I cut a piece of wood, put a socket on top, placed the cotter pin in the socket and seated the piece of wood to not send the impact into the bearings. BAM came right out
I managed to bust the top of the bolt off the pin, then with a screw driver, managed to double wedge it. I'm going to try a C clamp, the socket, and ball bearings up top on the busted side to drive it out. I'm here asking about last step. Bad idea or is there a better one with my janky tools?
my dad has this old racebike and there is a problem iether with the crank or the cotter.
if you hold both crankarms and shake it against each other (in the direction when you turn whilst riding or in the other way) one of the arms wiggles abit. and its horrible when you ride the bike
best piece of advice is get rid of the cottered cranks & install square taper 3 piece crank set as theyr'e so much easier to work on & won't give you any headaches.
the added bonus is you will have bolted on chain rings instead :D
keep the old cottered cranks though as they are very hard to find these days
Karl Hurkett: You might want to check out Sheldon Brown's website regarding English three-speeds. Converting a Nottingham-built Raleigh may not be that easy.

I used to build bikes from scratch as a kid and I used to hit the pin ONCE (Very hard) with a hammer and it would shoot out. No mushrooming or bending, ever... I did this many, many times.. I guess it depends on the quality of the pin...

It's an interference fit. I served as a trainee in a shop where stuff like this was built (tube frames). When it's tight, don't start beating on it and even squeezing can cause damage. Get the blue trip wrench and heat up the crank arm gently and it will just fall out.

The truth about these cranks is that more often than not, something about them is bent, or the pedals are bent. I've never owned a nice feeling cottered crank, as of yet. That said, I love cottered cranks.
PS: Try the Bikesmithdesign cotter press, I've only used it a couple of times, but it is extremely effortless., especially with a 19mm bolt head (and my trusty matching spanner).
+Alex Paulsen the old school rubber block style pedals on the old raleighs were notorious for falling apart as you ride along,thread lock on the nut ends of the long bolts that hold the blocks would be a great idea :D

Ok so I found this video a bit too late haha. My pins have mushroom cuz I wacked them with a hammer like a numbskull. Is there a place I can get new pins or a standard bolt that will fit?

It's because the bottom bracket is badly worn, enough that it causes play in the crank.
You guys have hawk eyes to see how loose that baby was.... Great job want you on my team.. The other side is out that is why it seems so loose. When the pin came out so easy on the left side, I said "GET THE CAMERA" for the crank side. THX for your comments
It's because they've already stripped out the other side of the bottom bracket actually.

There is another bike guy has a video how he made one out of a 'beam clamp'. I made one out of a Harbor Freight motorcycle chain breaking tool. Google it up, that's how I found out ways to do it.

What else was done to the bike besides replacing the bearings? That bike must have been ridden a lot and maintained poorly for that to happen
maintained poorly??, Yes SIR..... ridden a lot NO WAY. The other side is out that is why it seems so loose. When the pin came out so easy on the left side, I said "GET THE CAMERA" for the crank side... Great observation on your part

I can only get the pins and the axle and the crank arm.. Not the crank.. I will keep pokin around and check with my rep. Sometimes he come up with the weirdest stuff. He might have some old stock laying around

bike shop and he uses giant adjustable wrench for 10 or 8mm nut. lol seriously?You should have exact size wrench handy...
I wish removing a crank was as easy as loosening a screw, i absolutely hate crank pullers. Never know which one is going to rip the threads out of your crankset and i end up having to use my dremel to slice and dice the crankset just to get it off :(
Why would you destroy it? Those things aren't cheap. I just use my trusty hammer and give a few whacks. Comes off every time.
I swear my mom had that bike when I was a kid. Those crank pins would come loose and the pedals would slip on the crank.

Jeeze, if I had the tool I wouldn't need a video on how to remove the cotter! Of all the videos I watched on how to do this this is the worse. Who the heck has that Park tool? They don't even make them and if they did, they cost more than the bike is worth. Bikeman guy, if you would just keep from putting your face in the middle of all the frames I would have a little more respect, but you seem to be a bit of a big ham. Cheers!
