The term "one of a kind" is frequently applied incorrectly, but not in the case of Blossom Dearie. "Uniquely talented" doesn't do her justice. "Amazing" comes closer. Just loved her work.

What a beautiful song! I feel so lucky that we got to hear Blossom Dearie in NY in 2001 and still think fondly about that night.
The entire audience was mesmerized, completely under her spell.
I even got to chat with her and thank her after the show. She was a wonderful person and a very talented artist. As a pianist I really appreciate that she chooses each note carefully instead of playing a ton of notes like some jazz players do. She’s a purist and her style is minimalist, but each bite is a real treat and leaves us wanting more.

Dearie was, to me at least, the quintessential lounge/cabaret act. Kind of like in he mold of Bobby Short. She was a talented musician by all means and she had that totally distinctive, thin, "little girl" timbre to her voice. I have a couple of her albums and every now and then I play some of her stuff. Her backup men are also solid players, too.

  • @MSYNGWIE12

I hope The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel whose soundtrack seems to feature more Blossom Dearie tunes than anybody else's becomes even more of an ICON if that's possible. Her voice is truly unique- this is the 1st time I've heard her speak- exactly like one expects! Soft, sweet but not saccharine, perfectly "tender"- as a devotee of this "marvelous" TV show, I kept hearing snippets of a charming voice so suited to "certain" moments. As somebody who suffers from an illness, not Covid, no vaccine for my condition, I took/take to books and so I hadn't played her for awhile- Marianne Faithfull's She Walks in Beauty, has been my lady of choice since it's relase BUT as I am on "re-run" 6! for The Marvelous...I "dug" her out, dusted her off as the song goes and started all over again! Rachel/Miriam could sing just like this- close your eyes, when Midge is sad, and you hear BLOSSOM DEARIE! Not, sadly, loud, raunchy, nor "expressive" enough- not a ballsy chick, who can wail over feedback- nope- she's in a class of her own. Wow! Bless the music director of this brilliant show, all the soundtrack is spot on but Blossom, somehow she epitomizes a "seemingly" gentler time- Korea has been fought, hardly anybody is paying attention to a small country, named Vietnam, prosperity seems to have come to most of North America- I'm Canadian ( wish Blossom was a Montreal-er, she'd love that city!) rock and roll is fledgling with the wonderful Louie Prima and people still touch when they dance- merci beaucoup Blossom Dearie...Namaste World, be kind to each other today!

Check out "Blossom Dearie sings" from 1973 when you find the time; the album she released on her own label, Daffodil records. She updates her sound but remains firmly within the pure Jazz idiom which her early career was based upon. From start to finish it is beautiful music.

I had never heard of Blossom Dearie until this morning when Kareem Abdul Jabbar mentioned her and the song in his newsletter. What a beautiful voice. Will have to learn this tune on the keyboard but also play along with the video on my trumpet. Thanks for posting this.
