Just stumbled into your UA-cam channel and I completely agree. We have a 2021 F350 "Godzilla" with the 7.3 engine. We bought it (used) to pull our 2022 Ahara 365RL which I weighed this last week at 14,400 loaded for a trip and the truck has done everything we want it to. I've pulled the trailer up into the mountains in SE New Mexico at around 9,000 feet with no issues whatsoever. We're not full timers, but even if we were, the economics of gas over diesel would keep us in the gas engine with ample power to pull wherever we go. I've had people come up to me at the campground and say that's a nice truck, but then they notice it doesn't have the diesel emblems on the door. I explain that the cost of diesel (and DEF) didn't make sense and they pull out the "power card". But when I tell them the 7.3 has all the power I need, they just scoff and walk away. Now maybe if I was pulling a 20K pounder I would probably go with a DRW and Diesel, but I'm not. And yes they are correct that the diesel does get better gas mileage, however I'd have to drive like 200,000 miles before the diesel would be more cost effective, and that's just on fuel. Not to mention the maintenance costs that go with a diesel. I like y'alls channel so I'll be watching for more!

We're glad you found us! We're really happy with the truck but there's definitely a point where an upgrade is needed, but the internet will lead you to believe you need a Kenworth to pull a pop up lol. In the end it's whatever people like & what works for them. We're just really happy with this setup. You're right, those hills in NM will test a truck for sure but we made it just fine as well. Thanks for hanging out with us!

Wow that orange shirt is bright. Nothing wrong with a gas engine with todays trucks and the 10 speed transmissions. We ended up with a 2015 F350 DRW 6.7 diesel when we were shopping. It is the XL trim level with a few minor updates. It was the best deal we could find at the time. We only paid 45K for it. Didn't need all the upgrades that a lot of people look for. Just need a solid truck to do the job we were asking it to do. We pull a 2016 42' Grand Design Solitude 379FL at a GVWR of 16K. The setup has been a joy to drive anywhere we have been. Safe travels!

I agree with you. I have had a Ford diesel and after a few years i have swithed back to a gas truck. I did get better mileage with the diesel, but if you don't consistently drive a diesel you start to run into engine issues with them ( turbo systems, fuel injectors, glow plugs). With the diesel fuel being so high i could not afford to keep driving it daily. Also when towing it not always easy to find a place that sells diesel fuel that can fit my truck and rig. With the gas engine i get lower fuel mileage, but fuel is cheaper, and i can get it anywhere. It pulls my 5th wheel with no issues. Plus they are a lot cheaper to buy new over a diesel engine.

Great video!, we tow with a 2019 Ford F250 6.2. I've done a lot of research on the 7.3 and decided it's the truck for us. Your video was one of the deciding factor for us! Although we watched many others. It's more than enough for what we are towing, a 2023 Cougar 290rls 12,200 gvwr. We recently ordered a 2024 F350 with the 7.3L. We only tow our fifth wheel maybe once or twice a month during camping season and didn't see the need for a diesel. Plus we're recently retired and on a budget also! 😁

@RVUntethered I ordered the 3.73 for the fact I don't plan on towing really heavy. The 3.73 will tow a goose neck or fifth wheel around 18,600 lbs. I don't ever plan on towing anything close to 18,000 lbs. Also, I believe the 3.73 will get me better mpg as an everyday vehicle. Just my opinion!

Don't go creating drama about barely scraping by, just because I usually find those channels more interesting. Looks like you're doing a good job of being yourselves, and that is my #1 requirement of any channel I choose to stick with.
I'm not in the market for a pickup truck, but do appreciate your observations about trim level and engine selection, versus cost. I think that a lot of people who whine about inflation and unaffordability, are just suckers for buying whatever expensive crap a company's marketing department makes them feel entitled to, to keep up with the Joneses.
I think that if your pickup were 100% only used for pulling the 5th wheel, something like a Volvo big rig tractor would make more sense. But if using the pickup for other things/work, your choice makes sense. Too few pickup owners consider heavy duty or medium duty trucks, for the heavy and medium duty tasks they do with pickups.

Hi Cody & Angela, we have a 2017 F-250 XLT with the 6.2L, 6 spd. and 3.73 rear end we tow our Keystone Cougar 5th wheel and it has never let us down for power. Yes, it's thirst as you guys experience with your 7.3 and we are averaging about the same MPG as you indicated. With the XLT trim level, we are in an advantage with regard to payload capacity over those with higher trim levels. My brother has a 2023 Limited and his payload capacity is 700# less than our's. That can be pretty significant when your towing/hauling. Happy and safe travels until next time.

We've got a 22 F350 CCLB 7.3L with the 4:30 gears. Pulling just at 13.6k (weighed) fiver. We just got through the Adirondack mountains (65/69), averaging 65Mph, we came in right at 8.2Mpg. I ordered mine as an XLT. If your a Ford guy, you know the XLT is the way to go. We went long bed for the 48 gallon gas tank, higher tow rating, and no worries about cab meeting the cap of the trailer.
And yes, it's a constant whine fest from the diesel fans about how you can't pull with a gasser.. well, fully loaded I'm almost 8K UNDER my tow capacity, 1100# under my cargo cap, and right at 9K under my GCVWR.
The big learning curve is figuring how to get the 10 speed to transmission brake on downhills, and that's easy. I've never come close to red line, and with the power band being 34-4700RPMs, I normally only hit it downshifting on long declines, and even then not for long as the transmission holds the speed.
Love your videos, and hope to see y'all out there!

I had to order mine as all the F350's & most F250 around here on the lots are oil burners. Although the extra cost was not the factor for me, I saved the $10k As to mpg's I average 10.3 on a 4200 mile trip to AZ & back. Friend with a diesel and similar trailer averaged ~1 mpg better. He paid ~ $0.50- $1 g more for fuel + DEF. Sure he has a lot more TQ going up hills but I had no issues keeping up at all. Going down the long hills the 10 spd tranny worked great. Rarely had to use the brakes. Given all the emission issues with diesels I'm not regretting this gasser at all.

That MPG is hard to swallow towing a light trailer like that 😬
We have a 21 Ram 3500 CC longbox Duelly. It has the High Compression Cummins 410 gears 50gal tank ramair rear suspension 360 cameras duel alternators. Bought it new April of 21 for just under 65k.
We tow an Alliance Valor 40v13 that is over 15k empty and pushing 20k loaded. Not towing we average 22-23mpg and towing it has never dropped below 11mpg.
A word of advice for Cummins owners is to keep your RPMs at or just below 2000RPM.
Ours will run right at 2000 at 65mph and with the Variable Turbo it hardly ever shifts it just pulls harder 👍

We didn't choose a diesel because I can work on the gas engine myself and gas is available in remote areas. I run all my trucks into the ground which with a gas engine avoids a 20 or 30k rebuild at the mid-life. That doesn't even include the popular diesel delete.

We recently went on a 3,000 mile round trip without our Reflection and got 23mpg. When pulling our Reflection 5th wheel we get between 11 and 13mpg. Typically don’t go over 65 miles an hour but sweet spot is like 63 mph. Truck is a beast climbing mountains and brake exhaust is awesome going down the mountains.

Our 2020 cummings gets 25mpg when not towing, 13.5mpg towing our 13k trailer. Truck value is same as when new. Never downshifts when climbing, love the exhaust brake while decending. No more white knuckle driving like when we had a gasser. Always able to drive in cruise control. Its a better deal to have a diesel. Especially when you trade or sell it. Oh yea, oil changes are every 15k miles.
I will never pay for a gas truck.
Do you like using those little gas stations? We use truck lanes. Huge advantage.
We also save around $1 gallon with the ESP card.
No way is a gasser better. I see the diesel a much greater value worth the investment. Will save you more then you paid for the diesel.

Truck still had issues after the supposed fix and stelantis didn't want to help after the fix to further isolate the issue. Finally swapped it for a GMC with the 6.6L gas and so far I am happy. Sure it does not tow as well as with a diesel but with reduced cost and fuel and def along with lower maintenance cost it was worth it.

I bought a new 2022 Ford F350 with the Godzilla 7.3 gas engine and traded in my 2010 Ford F350 with the diesel engine. We left the dealership pulling our Raptor Toy hauler which was 40 foot long with a golf cart and Harley in the back. We were headed out of state from Georgia to Texas. By the time we had made it to Louisiana I knew I had made a mistake. The Godzilla had 430 horsepower and 475 ft.-lb. of torque and my diesel had 350 horsepower 650 lb.- of torque. The new Godzilla engine after driving the diesel for so long just seemed very lazy and lethargic. I guess if I had been used to only driving a gas engine such as the V-10 the difference would not have been noticeable. I called to try and get my old truck back but sadly it had just been sold to a wholesaler. The dealership did trade me up into a new diesel when we completed our trip. We road tested the Godzilla without pulling the trailer and I was convinced that the difference between the two was minute. I was proven wrong once we hooked the toy hauler up and we hit the first hill.

    • @RVUntethered
      @RVUntethered  Рік тому

40’ is a little much. If we were going over 40’ especially with a toy hauler we’d move to a dually diesel. I hate that you had a bad experience. I’ve driven diesels off and on and definitely wouldn’t describe the Godzilla as lethargic but we could’ve had different setups or specs. Gearing makes a huge difference!

    • @timothyallbritton1961

Factory specs for our toy hauler are. Dry Weight 14,807 lbs. Payload Capacity 3,193 lbs. GVWR 18,000 lbs. Hitch Weight 3,465 lbs. We have it maxed out at a little over the 18000 lb. limit and our hitch weight is around 3700 lbs. I really wanted the gas engine to work since the truck was about $11,000 cheaper and that gas is also way cheaper than diesel. I feel that it was a little much for a gas engine and my driving style. The gas engine was very peppy until it was saddled with my 19000 Lb anchor to drag up a hill. It did it no doubt, just not the way I wanted it too or was accustomed too. At approximately 120k, repair bills become as much as a new payment. And i will say that about all big 3 of the towing choices. Time to get a new truck. And that is tru for Gas and Diesel. Its not the engine, but the steering and suspention, and electronic parts that cost big $, and take time to repair. I hate being stranded. That death wabble thing scares me the most. Towing will wear on things you might not consider otherwise. All trucks will tow very well till they get to 4 yeas old. 😊

We had this bumper put on at a shop in Minnesota, but there are plastic inserts on the bumper, near the tow hooks. The inserts have to be removed and there is a bracket that attaches to the frame of the truck, through those insert holes.
The brush guard attaches to the bracket and is supported by the frame. It seems like it would be easy to do by yourself, but you would likely need three people, so you can hold it up and put the bolts in.
We are happy with it. I eventually want to pull it off and clean under it, but I need to be in a place where I have help. Once I get the chance, I’ll make sure and film it!

In the CO mountains I have way more power than you and have engine braking not just using the gears. You told the truth- you couldn't afford the diesel so got the gasser so therefore you have to tell people how great it is (when in fact you know the diesel is better in everyway other than initial cost.

I would get the diesel for $10K more. It will tow better. You would get 11 MPG when towing. When you sell or trade it in you will get at least $5K of the $10K back. The better gas milage will pay for the other $5K. If you get a bigger rig the gasser wont cut it. If you tow a lot or are a full time RVer. Diesel is a no brainer.
