I’ve had tornado damage to my homes twice, the second time was a lot worse including my business being damaged too. In my 74 years, I learned a very valuable lesson. Sirens=shelter, RIGHT NOW! You guys should not be ashamed one little bit. You do the best you can, learning as you go. Thanks for this video. It is real, raw and extremely valuable to your viewers. You did all the right things, and that brief hesitation is understandable. Exposure to the elements in the rush to the shelter is terrifying, but you made it and I’m so glad everything worked out for the best. You are right about one thing, screw the rules, the dogs go too! Oklahoma can be a very stressful place to live, but it is home and I am so glad to have you guys visit. Stay safe, remain healthy, trust your gut, and have fun. Give your hairy little kids many hugs.

Guys, I just finished the video. I so appreciate your honesty with yourselves and with us. Most of us have been there, getting complacent with because nothing bad has happened, nothing bad is going to happen this time. So glad you ended up safe and sound. But it's easy to just gloss over it for the cameras.

I get your dilemma … I am a trained storm spotter for the National Weather Service and love staying on top of the mysteries of weather. Yes, a weather geek. We have a camper in a seasonal campground right now and the storms always fall apart by us and never hit. (Knock on wood …) I’ve gone to the storm shelter before and it’s a lot of work when you are in a campground and you have pets! It’s easy to just say “we will be fine, because we always are” and not go to the shelter. I’ve made that decision myself as well. But this is a reminder that we need to take weather warnings seriously!!!

Yes, the Go-bag is a great idea! We learned this early in to our full-time journey, when the weather alarm went off at 2AM, across the RV. Cody fell down the stairs, I lept over him to turn the alarm off and scream, "What did it say??" HAHAHA. We laughed about it later, but that was the moment that we realized that gathering your stuff at 2AM and in the moment, may not be the best idea. W e also learned that our wifi blipped out and didn't alert us on our phones, so we always turn that off during storms too.

  • @badgerpa9

Glad you 4 are all OK, weather can be stressful. I was caught on the road and had a tornado follow us for a way too long distance and I learned to watch for the storms. Stay safe and healthy. Idling your ram 6.7 causes fuel wash.
Do not idle if you have to idle for a minute ( while ) set the idle in high idle.
Use your cruise control to set the high idle
The low oil pressure is hard on the lifters and can plus clogs the DPF.
ALSO the fuel soak reduces lubrication in the cylinders and can damage rings.
    I use high idle

    • @RVUntethered
      @RVUntethered  20 годин тому +1

Agreed. I make it a habit to idle very little, if at all. These emission systems are problematic with extended idle

I was in a storm in Iowa. The color of the clouds out west verses eastern storms are night and day. Much blacker. A wall cloud that made people scatter and mid-day turned dark as night. Holy Crap! So glad you all are safe! I lived in Springfield, MO for 7 years, I'm a licensed Ham Radio Operator, I'm SkyWarn and ARES trained and certified and I lived through the Joplin 2011 F5 tornado. Love that you all are saying, "Don't Wait, Don't Hesitate" It's hard lesson, but you'll not forget it! I keep a BugOut bag by the door when severe weather threatens and I'm not able to move my rig. The BugOut bag has a change of clothing, my work laptop, Mobile Ham Radio, license, passport, munchies, first aid kit etc. My wife has one as well with our family laptop etc. We have Life360 and during these events we message everyone in our circle and keep in touch that way, we also have a WhatsApp Family group that we message as well. This video was well needed for everyone to be reminded that Mother Nature doesn't wait for us to be ready! Stay safe out there, thanks so much for sharing this very vulnerable video. you all are awesome! See you on the road!

I have done a lot of trucking in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas and etc., when there were tornados warnings and, even on the ground, where i was driving but i never came across any. I just listened to the radio and watched the sky. The radio would tell me what county the tornado was in, but i had no idea what county i was in let alone where that county is at!! I do not live in that state! lol My worst nightmare would be seeing a tornado coming at me while I am driving on the interstate. No storm shelters along the highways, what am i going to do?!! I guess get close to GOD!

Us 4 kids were outside playing and the sirens went off , the sky turned black and not knowing what was going on we continued to play. Finally our elderly neighbor came out and told us to get in the house. 20 mins of wind rain and golf ball hail later we were ok.

When in doubt, BUG OUT. and yes I have seen my slides jump around a few times. We were at the ocean a few years back and the wife woke me up, she was afraid that the RV was going to tip over and hit the truck, the next morning I went out and all the wood spacers that I used to level the trailer we’re gone. The jacks were just hanging out about 3 inches above the ground. The RV wiggled from the wind back and forth and blew the wood spacers from under the stabilizers. Looking back, we should have gone.

Awesome! Funny story as to why we started packing a go-bag. Early on, into our full time journey, we had our weather alarm across the RV, thinking that it would wake us up more (I assume that was our logic). It went off at 2AM, Cody fell down the stairs, I lept over him to turn it off and started yelling, “What did it say??!” 🤣🤣
We realized that trying to get everything together in that moment was NOT a good idea. We could barely function at getting TO the weather alarm. Lol.

We lived in Oklahoma for nine years in the 90s - Shawnee, Norman, OKC and Lawton. We had tornadoes a lot, but the worst one was in Shawnee in 1999 when we had a lot of damage. We were in our utility room which doubled as our tornado shelter and it felt like the air was literally sucked out of our room. We had our two boys and three Boston Terriers in that room with us. When everything was calm, we ventured outside to see the damage. We found someone’s roof in our back yard, our fences down, our yard flooded and our chimney blown off the roof. But we survived. We never found out whose roof was in our yard, but it destroyed our patio roof. Due to job changes in 2000, we moved to Wisconsin. We still have family in Oklahoma. Now we lease our RV lot in California and traded tornadoes for earthquakes and fires.

A lifetime of "knowing" the general path they are going to take, and literally watching them hit around us, but never ON us. So glad you guys are safe! Living in S Central KY, we too have to stay on our toes a bit. Although, I’ll admit, like you we’ve gotten a little complacent with the last few. This is a great reminder to not hesitate & just seek shelter.
And you shouldn’t feel bad, it’s hard to know when it’s time to stop what you’re doing & get serious about taking shelter.
The severity sneaks up on you!
I tend to do this coping thing where if I hear sirens, I start cleaning & picking up the house and trying to “prepare” like I need things in order first before it gets bad. And I’ll watch out the window to try to determine if it’s time to get in a bathtub or not. 🤦🏻‍♀️It’s so stupid what the human brain does in time of flight or flight decisions. You’re right, the only smart thing to do is just take cover.

You are correct that shutting them off will cause the oil to "cook" and cause the inlet feed port to the bearings "coke" up, reducing oil flow. We ran a test where you would run the engine at max load for 15 minutes (about 1350 Turbine inlet temp), bring it to idle the just just shutting it off. Then heat soak for 5 minutes and start up and instantly go the max speed/max load. On teardown of the turbo you could see a nice oil burn marks where the oil feed holes lined up with the bronze shaft bearings.

Topic for discussion; Do any companies make kennels or cages for pets that are rated for accidents or storms? As you were telling the storm story I was thinking of those pets in an RV while someone was at work. It would be a comfort to know you left your dog in a kennel that could endure being crushed in a nasty storm. To know that as you clear the debris, your dog is still in good shape inside that kennel. Anyone else ever think about this?

Thank God you are both OK. My wife and I were in the Blowing Springs RV Park in Bella Vista, Arkansas on Nov 4th. We were not tracking the possibility of tornados at that area, but after watching the Ryan Hall Y'all channel, he showed a 60% chance of a tornado touchdown near Bella Vista. It was too late for us to pull out and leave with our trailer, so we headed out of the area and got a hotel room for the night.
Thankfully, Bella Vista did not get hit, but Little Flock a few miles east had a tornado touchdown. The hotel room was well worth the cost for the peace of mind. I did not want to ride out a tornado in our 5th wheel. Follow your gut feelings.
A bit of advice -- put on some substantial closed toed shoes if bad weather is predicted.
