The opera retells the story of the Babylonian captivity when Nebuchadnezzar (or Nabucco, in Italian) seizes Jerusalem, destroys the temple, and enslaves the Israelites in his kingdom. At the heart of the opera is “Va, pensiero,” also known as the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves, in which the Israelites yearn for their lost home.
It’s this yearning for home by those exiled from their homeland, and of refugees trying to build a new identity in a new land, that has helped make Verdi’s first big hit resonate far beyond the opera house since its premiere.

Michael, learning the background of this part if the opera makes it much more enjoyable. I had never heard of this because the only opera I have attended was Madama Butterfly and I loved it. I had wanted to witness more before I moved to this rural area. You have made it possible, to imagine, in my mind, the Israelites longing to be free and be able to return to their homeland. Thank you for giving me some insight into this opera.

This is absolutely beautiful. I could listen to this wonderfully mystical composition for the whole day!!! I have attempted to play it on the accordion with little success.... Love it.
