It's a shame you had to lock your hitch up like that because a dirt bag feel he has the right to take your stuff. I can't stand a theft. Thanks for sharing the details about those locks JD.
I can't believe all the negative comments on this! They are missing the point ... I have a $1600 B&W fifth wheel hitch that is only a cotter pin away from being stolen by anyone with a few muscles and a truck. I'd gladly pay $160 for the right pins to lock it in place. I appreciate BTBRV showing my best lead yet!
If a thief wants your stuff, they have a way of getting what's yours. I use a Grade 8 hex head bolt with a locking washer and nut. I tighten it down with massive wrench so it won't fall off. Changing the hex bolt to a socket head bolt will slightly increase the anti-theft property. I have experienced my RV stolen from a secure lot, coupler lock and hitch pin in place, all compromised. Now, I go to extremes, still looking for better products. Thanks for the video.

I really like my 180 hitch by WeighSafe. Two different ball sizes and they have a double pin lock built into the hitch already. A lot more compact then this setup. 8” drop 3” shank = $260 on amazon plus a lock for the hitch shank of your choosing. Definitely informative for someone who has already purchased the B&W though. Great video as always!!!!
I used to lock up nothing. After watching this channel for last year I now lock up everything to do with the truck, RV, trailers, hitches etc. and I can tell you for a fact JD carries a LOT of keys lol
I am interested to see how well the brass key holds up after a few months of road grime, dust, and dirt that'll settle into the threads of the pins. It wouldn't be the first brass key I've seen twist of in a lock. Looks like a great option though. Thanks for sharing.

There is nothing that you do half-ass! I love it, buy it once and spend the money or get crap several times. Applies to tools, equipment, clothing, you name it. Well done, looks great!
Great Video. I hate thieves. I walked out to my truck in October and some jerk stole the plug out of my receiver and took the pin with them. So I purchased a new plug and a less expensive lock than what is shown for the B&W hitch to keep people from helping themselves to my receiver plug. On a side note, if you live in the rust belt, be sure to lubricate your locking pins, key holes and threads with a good grease (I chose CRC White Lithium at Rural King) as the salt brines and calcium chloride mixtures can creep through the plastic protective covers and harden inside the lock mechanisms and on the threads. A quick coating of grease will keep these parts working after a harsh Pennsylvania winter. Also, spray down the treads on your D-ring shackles with a coat of spray grease as well. It will help them to work smoothly for many years to come.
Thanks for sharing, BBTBRV. There are folks as of yesterday who had items not locked down stolen from their garages, carports, and even off their utility trailers. My wife just told me that a victim had a video of a dark vehicle driving by their driveway, then the vehicle backed into their driveway and a man & woman got out of their dark vehicle, hooked the entire trailer to their hitch and drove off. The utility trailer had a large generator on it. This is insane-crazy of the thievery. Sorry you had someone try to take your B&W hitch. Glad you got some nice lockable pins. Have a Merry Christmas.
I have one like these on my Class V hitch receiver. Note: If it's not stainless steel, it will rust from salt on the Northern roads. I also use a long, thick cable and padlock to cable the car trailer to the truck chassis when I'm traveling.
JD, you should check out the lock pins that "bulletproof hitches" sells. similar price, but you dont have to screw the key. Only reason i mention that, is because over time, the road grime and any dirt you drive in does make the key hole kinda tight. I would assume that those pins have all stainless steel internals, so i would also recomend putting some graphite powder in the key hole every once in a while.
We hear from very few customers who have a pin theft problem. If you are one of the few that do have a theft issue our replacement pins are $10.50, buy a few extra and put them in your glove box for a less expensive 'insurance' policy.
Some people are real d. S. They are just jealous of others who have nice things on their vehicles so they have to vandalise it I wish people could just get along and be happy with what they have
The hitch I use for my trailer is a setup I got with the trailer. It has things for attaching some bars to help control the trailer from swaying back and forth and an extra ball on the side for another thing to minimize sway. I only use it for towing the trailer and I don't get to do that often enough. This beast is HEAVY. I've left it on much longer than I should because it is HEAVY. I have a locking pin securing the main bar thing that the hitch is attached to. The hitch setup is bolted to the receiver bar. I can't imagine anyone stealing it to use because you'd have to have the bars and other stuff to fully use it. But some kids steal things just to be jerks. Doing anything to make it harder for people to steal your stuff reduces the odds of your getting ripped off. Nothing will entirely prevent someone with knowledge and the right tools. It's all about reducing those odds for casual theft.
I bought a Fastway hitch system (2-ball) similar to this. But I didn't need to be taught a lesson. I went ahead and ordered 2 locking pins to secure it to the truck, and to secure the 'riser' system so it couldn't be stolen in-toto........or partially. I like to keep my hitch in the receiver. For one thing, more cushion against rear-end collisions. Which DO happen.
You can Haul anything you want with that Trailer Hitch? Can you haul a 5th wheel with it? Can you haul a Tractor Trailer with it? Yeah i know being bit smart butt here. but good job on protecting it more. I know it sucks having to replace hitches. More so, when you kindof forget its there until you actually need it and its gone.
That's why I bought the rapid hitch over the B&W a year or two ago. They have an available locking kit purchased separately of course. B&W needs to step up and provide something. A man cant own anything without it being locked down, and that doesnt even work sometimes. Great Vid.
My pins don't use cotter keys, they have a built in swivel clip on the end that rotates into position and they also have a hole for a small padlock. A set of small weather rated Master padlocks is cheap.
I've had two locking hitch pins, and they both rusted shut. One of them I got off by spraying with WD-40 and let sit for a couple hours. The other would not take the WD-40, so a crowbar made simple work of getting it off. Lesson here is: WD-40 rocks, and the locking pin will only keep honest people from stealing it.
I recently bought a Curt extended 3 ball mount that has a total of 4 pins also. I've looked into these type of pin/locks and too many say they seize over time. Plus, my hitch sticks out so far I remove it when not in use. But there may be times when I want to leave it installed. I had a a set of 4 keyed alike 30mm MasterLocks, tiny little things. They fit and locked in the pin holes! Now, a small set of bolt cutters would cut them like butter; but as you noted, it is the casual theft they prevent.
Some people are saying just buy more pins, that's great as long as it's the only thing they take. I live in the north and I have something similar, a little fluid film in the threads and I've never had a problem
For $33 you can just keep a spare set of 3 pins in your glove box. Just put a lock on the receiver so they cannot steal the entire hitch. Those locks seem like a pain if you need to make multiple adjustments.
Dont know where you are from but here where I live, it's a fine to keep your hitch in when not towing. It takes no time at all to quickly pop a hitch in when you gotta tow something. What a waste of 500 bucks for pins and that massive bulky hitch
That is exactly what I was thinking it can be so easily stolen, but with that kit will be harder. I was like why can’t no one make one with locks instead of pins. Pins make me feel so unsafe especially with all that weight in the back. I know they are the pros in the business they went to design class, but we are the ones in the field towing everything from left to right. Now I might consider bw with locked pins.
I use a round keyed lock on my drop pintle hitch and I came out of Walmart once to find some idiot literally trying to pick it. I just stood back laughing.
You’ve solved the theft problem for the hitch! I empathize because someone stole the sleeve insert for my hitch right in front of my house. Is there anything special you do to control other parts of the vehicle? I know in South Texas, criminals have stolen wheels, tires, spare tires, toolboxes, tonneau covers right off of vehicles overnight. In one case a set of thieves stole dozens of wheels off trucks on a auto dealership’s lot!
I remember that! People steel new tires here to sell them. I'm guessing it's a local business. Owl Cam is amazing as well as motion and movement detectors. I'm in the Telemetry engineering business, so I use some cool tech.
If you leave these pins on for any length of time. Good luck getting them unlocked if you live in any area where they put salt on the road. I bought just a hitch pin sprayed lube in the lock still had to cut it off
I had a dirt bag steel a bearing buddy off my boat trailer while I was out on the water. It's not that it very expensive but I had to drive home 45 miles with one missing. I ended up pulling the bearing and inspecting it for damage. Also, I pulled and inspected the bearing to make sure it was not damaged on the trip. Its annoying that I had to spend an hour fixing the issue.
I think B&W makes some veeeery nice stuff, but I've never particularly cared for the multiple pin system on the tow n stow. I think being able to flip it up under the truck is pretty cool but personally I would rather keep an expensive hitch like that under the back seat of my truck or in a tool box vs leaving it out in the elements for possible rust and corrosion. Still, I think the keyed alike pins are an excellent solution if you're going to keep the hitch in the receiver. Looking forward to more BTBRV videos.
Nice hitch it really is but it’s priced beyond what it’s worth once you buy all those locks ,which I may mention they only last a few years here in NY even with the covers salt residue will sneak in from the hitch side and they won’t come off one day you’ll have to cut them off.....simply get the receiver you need and remove it and put under the rear seat when not in use . Im pretty sure a removable hitch is illegal to have in the receiver in NY anyway when not towing . It can’t stick out past the bumper .You can thank insurance company lobbyists for that.
My hitch pin is always locked. As is the coupling lever on the trailer. Besides to prevent theft I'm also protecting against some meathead removing a pin or unlocking and thus losing a trailer on the move.
I'm late to the party but this was the biggest issue I had with choosing the B&W, or any other hitch really. This is just one of those cost you can't avoid keeping the scumbags away. I just can't take the risk of coming off the lake to find somebody tried to steal my hitch a leave me stranded. I realize that anyone who has the time and tools to break those pins free are going to do it. It about the random opportunist we need to keep away. I hope you check your recent posts and let me know how they are working today and if the keys mechanism is holding up? Thanks
Thought the same, but it is like a screw, meaning at each full turn you gotta pick it again. 7-8 turns each, 4 of them... Well... you can also machine multiple spots so the pins keep locking if the key isn't there. Also, let's not forget he is the lock picking God. He picked all sorts of Bowley locks while other lockpickers said it was nearly impossible.
Not sure how these have been tested but there are plenty of videos on similar pins that lock. A pipe slipped over the lock end on the others and lifted up or down snapped off the lock end and allowed the hitch to be stolen.
Up here in Alberta you can get a ticket for leaving the hitch receiver on your truck when not towing. Also if in an accident where you are rear ended, it becomes a no fault accident due to the unfair advantage. The ticket is actually called unfair advantage. 1st hand knowledge of this one.
I have several hitches. Keep them in a locked cargo box. No one has ever tried to steal them because it would require climbing into the bed in plain site of anyone around. Out of site out of mind.
I bought a set of these when I purchased my B&W hitch. My boss told me I wasted my money because the ball assembly can’t be removed with the hitch on the truck, which is true. Well the very next weekend he was in New Orleans for a concert. When he came out to leave he found his ball assembly dangling and the pins gone. Did he buy a set of these locking pins? Nope, he bought a new set of the original pins from B&W. You just can’t fix stupid.
JD are you still using the owl dash cam? Did it pick anyone up messing with your truck? The wife and I want to get one based on your original review but what are your thoughts after a few months of use? Did you stick with it or swap to something else? It would be AMAZING if the auto industry jumped on board and used all these cameras as part of the security system to record if someone walks close enough to trip the parking sensors or doors from mirror cameras. And an aux input if you have a trailer with rear observation camera. The technology is already out there.
I had one of the earlier versions of those pins. After a few times wrestling with it in the rain to change the ball I went back to the regular pin. I just took the hitch off when I wasn’t using it. The lock mechanism was getting rusty anyway.
Simple fact of the matter is that locks are only there to keep honest people honest. If a thief want's your stuff, he is going to find a way to get it. I remember in Los Angeles there was a crew of thiefs who could strip a car of engine, trans, tires, seats and stereo in less time than it takes to buy a pack of cigarettes in a convenience store.
One thing about cheap hitch locks, they are easy to break. I had to remove one on my old minivan which didn't have a key. A couple of blows with a hammer and chisel and it was off. Was surprised and less than impressed.
You stated your hitch system was rated for 21 thousand pounds ! What are the new locking pins rated for ??? Most after market parts pins are usually only 10 thousand or 5 k pounds.
Been happening to us for three decades where just the pins are taken. Especially at rest stops when a trailer is hooked up. Seems the goal us to cause trouble more than just steal the pins. Always check and if possible park where you can see your vehicle especially when towing.
Even though it says these pins are good for 2” and 2 1/2” receivers on your link they still work for your 3” receiver? I just recently bought a 2019 f450 inspired by you and bought the tow and stow hitch with 7” drop just be safe and those pins were my main concern. So this video was perfectly made for me which is why I brought up my question. I love your videos and you do amazing work I hope to hear back from you!
Small drawstring bag & stow the hitch under the rear seat in the long term more practicul to use, cheaper and most important peace of mind. Thats an OTT mod thats just not needed. Working on an everyday basis it would be less hassle to hitch up.

Anthony LaFata sorry it happened, I hate thieves. Sad for them if I catch them. Good reason to carry duct tape.
I had to cut mine off got rusted
I think B&W makes some veeeery nice stuff, but I've never particularly cared for the multiple pin system on the tow n stow. I think being able to flip it up under the truck is pretty cool but personally I would rather keep an expensive hitch like that under the back seat of my truck or in a tool box vs leaving it out in the elements for possible rust and corrosion. Still, I think the keyed alike pins are an excellent solution if you're going to keep the hitch in the receiver. Looking forward to more BTBRV videos.
Just don't lose your keys. I put a locking hitch on my mom's suburban like about 9 years ago then she lost the keys lol, the hitch is still on there.
i work at a used truck dealership, and we use a sledge hammer to break them off. literally take like a minutes, sure does make a lot of noise though.
People do that sh!t at truck stops all the time. I always had to double check even if I just went to the bathroom.
It's so sad we have to have these to keep our hitch safe. However I so thankful for your tips. This is so good to know.
Thank you. 👍👋
Thanks
We have problems here too in Australia with people wanting what's not there's, Real pain in the butt
I don't want to sound like a cheap person, but I would just keep the hitch inside the cab or toolbox and save $165 for something else.
Yep. Locks are for honest people in a lack of judgment. Otherwise, they will still get what they want.
I would’ve just bought 2 BOLT locks one for the bottom and ove for the receiver also one less key to carry as they key to your truck key
The lock is the weakspot,🤐paperclip Will do the job.look iT up lockpicklawyer channel sorry 👍🏻
Internet Explorer i still think bosnian bill is #1 but LPL is #2 but aggressively moving forward....as far as entertainment value tho lpl is #1
Would it be better to offset the locking portions either side so that they cannot put a prybar in to break them off?
With the threads on the lock that would take a lot of effort and time most thieves are looking for quick and easy
Not sure how these have been tested but there are plenty of videos on similar pins that lock. A pipe slipped over the lock end on the others and lifted up or down snapped off the lock end and allowed the hitch to be stolen.
Can you use those locks in place of the cotter pin when you tow your RV? Meaning not just for preventing theft, but also for towing.
It's sad that everything has to be locked up these days. Great solution for the problem.
Locks are for honest people with a lack of judgment. If they want it, they will take it no matter.
Unfortunately I was parked facing a wall. It captured the motion, just not the person
That rear bumper is beautiful.
One thing about cheap hitch locks, they are easy to break. I had to remove one on my old minivan which didn't have a key. A couple of blows with a hammer and chisel and it was off. Was surprised and less than impressed.
You need the thinkware camera that records 24/7, I have one on my raptor in kingsville if you ever want to check it out.
You stated your hitch system was rated for 21 thousand pounds ! What are the new locking pins rated for ???
Most after market parts pins are usually only 10 thousand or 5 k pounds.
That's the reason I went with weigh safe... no pins to get stolen
Cheap fix! Weld some 1.5-2 tubing around where the pin goes so thieves can’t break off the locking pin.
Pro tip, if the pin spins freely just hold the key and spin the pin until tight.
Is your truck lifted? Or do you find you need the 6" drop for the standard receiver height ? I thought the 2.5" drop was more common
Throw the hitch under the seat. That's why it is removable. Plus you save a few shins.
Had one of these for my 5th Wheel Hitch. Peace of mind
Weld it on grind it off😂
Been happening to us for three decades where just the pins are taken. Especially at rest stops when a trailer is hooked up. Seems the goal us to cause trouble more than just steal the pins. Always check and if possible park where you can see your vehicle especially when towing.
I like the shackle locks, but my shackles were $40. Why would anyone pay $90 to secure a $40 part?
Even though it says these pins are good for 2” and 2 1/2” receivers on your link they still work for your 3” receiver? I just recently bought a 2019 f450 inspired by you and bought the tow and stow hitch with 7” drop just be safe and those pins were my main concern. So this video was perfectly made for me which is why I brought up my question. I love your videos and you do amazing work I hope to hear back from you!
Wow! Great buy Thanks for sharing! Will get a set for myself.
Good work thanx
Small drawstring bag & stow the hitch under the rear seat in the long term more practicul to use, cheaper and most important peace of mind. Thats an OTT mod thats just not needed. Working on an everyday basis it would be less hassle to hitch up.
