  • On the edge of the Lake District in Cumbria, where the river Cocker meets the river Derwent is the town of Cockermouth. Birthplace of William Wordsworth and once home to England cricketer Ben Stokes, join me for a tour of this historic town centre.

    Fond memories of growing up just outside cockermouth…still have family up home and glad to be getting back regularly…Remember one New Year’s Eve when we lined the street and surrounded the Mayo statue singing the new year in! Sainsbury used to be the cattle market area

    Love the walk-a-round. Our great great grandfather, William Wales (possibly spelt Wailes at the time) came from Cockermouth.
    Born 1880 Cockermouth UK
    Died 1884 Rye Park Australia
    Sentenced as a convict about 1824 to Sydney Australia.
    Would be cool if there are any Wales / Wailes surnames to make contact with.

      I think you meant to say he was born in 1780 , interesting that makes him 104 when he died and 44 when he was sentenced that’s amazing if correct

    What an excellent video. I was born in Maryport (Ewanrigg Cottage Hospital) in 1948 but my family came from Cockermouth and that is where I lived until I left to go to university in London in 1967. My father (Stanley) worked at Jennings Brewery and my mother (Elma) at Mitchells Auction Co. The town has changed enormously since then, and not necessarily for the better, but I still have some very fond memories. Well done.

    I just purchased on eBay a silver trophy featuring someone who won the Fat Stock turkey competition in 1873 in Cockermouth. I just had to have it. Greetings from Australia.

    Was eager to have a look at the hometown of my favorite poet William Wordsworth. Wondering how would be the places which were the inspiration of his poetry. Nice video🥰

    Great tour but we never saw the Castle! Some good views from Memorial gardens and there is a really interesting history wall up Kings Arms Lane with all the details of the people you mentioned when in the Trout garden. Thank you for doing these I really enjoy watching them.

      Thank you. I did intend to get some shots of the Castle & only realised when I got home that I’d missed it! 🤦‍♂️ Next time though!

    I can’t take it seriously with that name cockermouth
    But I bet it wasn’t rude sounding when they named it

      Cocker means crooked in the local dialect, the river Cocker is a very fast flowing river with lots of curves and bends, hence the name.

    The derwent runs from derwent water just saying

    • @ThatllDoVlog
      @ThatllDoVlog  10 місяців тому

      It starts in the Borrowdale valley on the sides of Glaramara, flows into Derwent Water, then into Bassenthwaite Lake, then into Cockermouth. 😉😀
