I have liked Dr Grande, but his snobbery came out when he spoke of body language analysis, saying not a science. But I think body language reading is a useful tool. Useful tools don't have to be pure science.

    • @noncoincidencesynchronicit8896
      @noncoincidencesynchronicit8896 2 роки тому +6

@@jessicamurphy8817 True that body language could be a useful tool. However, it should not be used as the main or only tool. If he said it's not a true science, I'd actually mostly agree on that one. Pretty much all analyses on body language are somewhat flawed, as people can fake everything (including body language). Furthermore there are many meanings/reasons and various interpretations to numerous movements, voice ranges, etc. I've personally seen countless times people incorrectly interpreting body language. To have a more scientific method of analyzing a person's character, it must be coupled with other factors (i.e. persons history, relationships, life experiences [including PTSD, traumatic, good, bad, indifferent...], persons health&wellness, bodily toxic levels, etc.), etc. Although, if just trying to determine whether the person is being honest/genuine/lying, being deceitful.., then it could increase probability for a more accurate assessment.

Thank you so much for calling this out. I used to watch his videos and in a few videos he even claimed to be an expert on personality disorders. I was a Psych student and was watching his videos in the beginning and one day I came across his video on HPD (well, his one of many), having a parent with HPD I thought I would click it. I was appalled by what he said. He claimed that people with HPD dont show anger, mood swings, or rage. He basically described people with the disorder as silly goofs who wear bright colors and tell stories.....to say I unsubbed after that video is an understatement. I was literally in shock as both a Psych student and someone who lived with a parent with the disorder. How someone who claimed to be an expert on personality disorders could get that so wrong was so odd to me. So then, I did some digging, and found out his qualifications or lack thereof are not what he portrays. It really angers me beyond belief.

My son is continuing his education and working on his PhD in Psychology, currently passed the FBI security and was approved for clinicals at Fort Leavenworth prison under the guidance of his professor. He watched one of this so called "Dr Grande's" video and stated "Who is this person? What's his education background, practice blah blah blah ". So my son did his own research and found that Dr Grande isn't even qualified to diagnose any person. According to my son,he feel that Dr Grande's videos are disingenuous. absolutely agree- also - a phd in counsellor education doesn't give anyone the authority to make diagnosis, I have trained as a councillor and had years of counselling. I was not getting better, and knew I wasn't stable enough to ethically practice. I was later diagnosed with BPD and received dialectical behavioural therapy which saved my life. I am now in recovery. Not one therapist in over a decade picked up on the fact that there might be something more complex going on. This isnt to say that counselling cant be helpful in many cases. I do however think that there is a massive blind spot within the profession when it comes to mental illness, particularly if someone is eloquent and presenting well.

    • @nannettefreeman7331

Agreed. I was in & out of counseling for decades, never seeing any substantial, lasting improvement (aside from the years I coincidentally adopted a pretty enthusiastic meditation regiment). It took my impulsive & self-destructive behavior landing me in JAIL, & subsequently being evaluated by a qualified PSYCHIATRIST, along the lines of Dr Das here, before I got my BPD diagnosis! And that did not take place until I'd reached the age of 37. The decades of turmoil & all the meaningful relationships left in ruin, it's a shame I didn't understand what was going on with me sooner. Who knows? I might have had a happy & fulfilling life! ✌🏼

Haphazardly dig your wife’s shallow grave and throw her in. 5. Make sure to smother youngest in front of the older ( much more aware and timid child) then murder her too but make sure to remember she said “daddy no” or was it “ daddy are you going to do to me what you did to cece” ( Chris let us know he isn’t sure if he answered her or not…) 6. Throw them in oil tanks and “stomp” their bodies through. 7. Text your mistress about songs with ominous meanings, text flowers, blah blah 8. Get caught immediately and throw entire life away plus 4 others. 9. Continually say even more horrific details about your crimes and lie and manipulate anyone who will listen..Good plan Chris. Thank you for continuing to call him out. Dr. Grande gives legal opinions and frequently acts as judge and jury by saying someone is guilty or ot guilty beyond a reasonable doubt or commenting on the "quality" of the evidence against someone.; he does not have a law degree or police experience, so his comments are more than unhelpful. What he does is grounds for discipline if he is a licensed therapist! His disclaimer he is not diagnosing is BS, as you point out. • @michaellovely6601
      @michaellovely6601 Рік тому +2

I tend to consider Chris Watts' plea bargain our nation's own "Deal with the Devil." In the legal media system the term "A deal with the Devil" is used to refer to a crime which is extremely heinous and demented in nature and the accused pleads Guilty to the charges against them in exchange for a lighter sentence or pleads Guilty to lesser charges again in exchange for a lighter sentence. This term was first used in Canada during the investigation of Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo; aka the Ken and Barbie killers. Karla pleaded Guilty to two counts of Manslaughter in exchange for a twelve year prison sentence and testifying against Paul. When the police found videotapes showing Karla was more involved than what she told the police; the term of "a deal with the Devil" was coined in the Canadian press and the rest is history. However, I don't believe that Chris was insane or psychotic at the time of the murders because one of the key criteria for an insanity defense (had Chris rejected the plea bargain and instead pleaded Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity) to be accepted by the court system in Colorado is whether or not the accused knew right from wrong at the time of the crime. Chris clearly knew that his actions were wrong; but he did not care about the consequences.

@@kibby5774 Still! It’s about integrity. He’s misleading people. Would you be analyzing people? Letting the world know you suspect they had certain mood and personality disorders when you aren’t qualified to diagnose them? I’m guessing probably not. You have to at least acknowledge he doesn’t have the credentials to be diagnosing from the DSM; you’re just dismissing it. He isn’t a psychologist or psychiatrist. I’d respect him so much more if he just said his background; it would be an opportunity to say he’s a professional counselor and how his PhD ties into this. He’s likely hesitant because he’s misled a lot of people by arrogantly acting like he’s able to diagnose. I thought he was a psychologist for a long time. For me it really is about integrity and being forthcoming. That matters.

I understand your resentment. However, I don't think credentials should be the factor to consider. There are many people out there, including ones with corresponding credentials, yet they will overstate their opinion as facts, yet they might include bias in their analyses, yet they won't follow the scientific method. You can be anyone. What matters is your work style, your methodology. It's just that people with higher education tend to know how to apply it.

@@freespiritchristinaMy professors in the Addictions Counseling Master’s teach us how to help clients with various diagnoses, and how to use treatment modalities appropriate for people with various diagnoses, and their characteristics. They explain how to identify people who might have specific disorders. The difference between diagnosing someone or not is the official capacity to do so. If You can’t diagnose someone if you’re not qualified to make that determination. Anyone can discuss psychiatric disorders and speculate. An official diagnosis will follow you through your life. It could be argued that YT discourse can do the same, but it is not a diagnosis, and is unlikely to affect your medical care, ability to purchase a gun, legal decisions, etc. It’s no more damaging for someone highly educated in Counselor Education to discuss psychiatric disorders than the lot of True Crime Karen’s who usually do. While I don’t agree with all of Dr.Grande’s assessments, I don’t think he’s claiming they’re expert assessments, or asking us to. If a professor isn’t an expert anymore, though, what is the state of our attitude toward education in the U.S? It’s common for doctors of philosophy to offer analysis and opinions about many topics. I’d rather hear an educated perspective, including those who have lived experience in the criminal justice system, than most True Crime channels out there, including network channels. Please excuse my messy punctuation…I can’t see what I’m typing or edit on YT, currently.

To those interested in the Watts' case, the very best assessment that I've found on UA-cam is on the channel "Live Abuse Free". There are a number of videos on that channel about Watts. A key reason the assessment of Watts on this channel seems so good is that it accounts for Watts' behaviour in the police interviews, and after; and also his behaviour life long, including when meeting Shannan and throughout their marriage.
It makes sense of all of Watts' history.

I have been watching some of Dr Grande's videos for a very long time now and I am sure there were a few where he talked about his PhD in counselling education. I can't be bothered checking, but from the top of my head, there is an old video where he explains the difference between a medical doctor and a PhD doctor, where I think he mentions it. I wouldn't say he has ever been purposefully trying to disguise his real credentials. I have always known he had a psychotherapy background, but he is not a clinical psychologist. And I myself don't always agree with his opinions, but I really enjoy his videos, some make me laugh, some I appreciate because of the thorough factual work and a clear presentation. I have also subscribed to your channel and look forward to further videos.

The entire police discovery files are public along with at least 2 hours of a police/FBI interview that took place months after his conviction while in prison. Chris Watts never spoke to a judge in court. He never spoke in court at all. He didn't discuss his motives until months after he plead guilty. So, what are people who are so enmeshed with a parent (I think a case can be made that Chris was enmeshed with his mother)? What leads to them committing crimes and/or horrific passive aggressive behavior that hurts so many? He seems to have a pattern (if his mother, Shannon and Nicole can be called a pattern) of attaching to stronger personalities and being "influenced" by them. I have a personal interest in this as I think I have known at least 4 men like this and they always behave as if the women in their lives are running their lives and they just have no control or ability to make a decision. Oops, they end up a father, oops, their mother gives a grandchild food they are allergic to, oops, I'm suddenly having an affair, oops, I don't want to be married after all, oops, I killed my wife and kids. What's with these men who are "victims" of the women in their lives?

I have a similar educational background to Grande (minus his pHd, which is irrelevant to direct practice for the most part anyway), and the thought of me confidently supposing people's diagnoses/personality factors/treatment needs is SO unimaginable to me. I am not even remotely qualified to put that information out in the world even in a hypothetical, let alone regarding a real person.
Everyone defending Grande because he 'doesn't claim' to be a psychologist/psychiatrist (even though he's hoping everyone assumes he is one) is doing so because they don't understand the massive difference in expertise between a 'counsellor' and an actual doctor of psychology or MD. As an analogy, it's like the difference between a masseuse and an orthopaedic surgeon.

I take Dr G with a grain of salt but do find his content mostly informative and entertaining. Generally, he does examine evidence for and against the person being guilty/psychopathic or whatever the subject matter is. I don’t just take one person’s opinion as gospel , but I listen to several content creators and read on these subjects, as well as in this particular case, watched the interrogation videos. Also, credentials do matter, and I know you are a medical doctor/psychiatrist and regularly work with criminals, so your POV definitely carries weight. Family annihilation like this is just unthinkable and it’s hard for me to get my mind around, and I think most people feel this way.
All that said, CW did seem generally like a regular, responsible guy who was frustrated at their financial life spinning out of control, another child on the way, and then falling in love with another woman. He was known for being dependable and knowledgeable on his job and had no criminal record. There are other content creators who agree with you about him not being a psychopath, but many say he is/was. I agree that he was more cowardly than a psychopath would be. I’m not victim-blaming either as what he did was horrible and heinous and no one deserves that. Your take makes me think further about this, and your expertise with the checklist and how things are really diagnosed is compelling for sure.
Whether he was narcissistic, sociopathic, psychopathic, or just snapped and made this evil plan over some weeks, it’s a Shakespearean-level tragedy that ended four lives, five if you include his life being over as he will never get out of prison.

What he did to his children in particular haunts me (I feel incredibly sorry for Shannon, and in no way think that was anything but horrific and disgusting, but there’s something gut twisting and skin prickling about the idea of putting his two babies in car seats near their mothers dead body and deliberately smothering each. I agree that Chris Watts is probably not a psychopath. I also think Dr. Grande is plenty qualified to discuss the topics he does, and is not misrepresenting himself. Counselor Education is offered through Psychology departments, where I study. In Education, it would be an Ed.D, not a Ph.D. Both are advanced degrees, and doctors of philosophy publish research on a wide variety of topics within their field. They discuss many topics outside their specialty with students. My professors have psychology degrees, and have covered various psychiatric disorders, neurobiology, pharmacology, etc., in class. I’m studying to be a licensed therapist, but we still cover material beyond that role as well as current events, such as news cases. The type of discussion on his channel is not unusual in classes, in terms of examining which disorders might be at play in real and mock scenarios. Doctors of philosophy are qualified to analyze and discuss many subjects. Who has the power to diagnose patients is so crucial because it’s a label that will stick with you for the rest of your life, affecting your medical care, legal status, etc. Dr. Grande cannot diagnose someone, and there is no specific danger in his speculating, as a highly educated professional. People with or without a high school diploma are discussing how to identify a narcissist, who is a sociopath, and all of the same topics. I appreciate an educated perspective, whether someone has a Ph.D or lived experience in the criminal justice system, or whatever the topic may be. My professors are called “Doctor.” I don’t think Dr. Grande has misrepresented himself in any way. He has done training videos in my major area, which are on YT. It’s clear, from those, that he is a professor.

Yes I think Dr. Grande missed the mark on this one. Psychosis, sleep deprived, years of unresolved anger and feeling trapped played into it. Did he have a psychotic break I wonder?

So with you! I like to speculate, but I'd never claim to be an expert or that I'm even right about my speculation. I'd far rather have a professional come on (my or any channel) and give solid answers. I feel he's misrepresenting himself/the profession.

Dr Grande's videos should be taken as entertainment and general background on cases, much as my own crime commentary. It doesn't take some special kind of crazy or mental illness to kill. This was - in my opinion - done for one of the oldest reasons one kills their spouse...money! Mounting debt, disagreements about finances, looming spousal and child support if he exited the marriage by divorce...all fueled by the excitement of some new p#ssy. There are no mulligans in life.

This video and you discussing the thought insertion aspect reminds me of something that happened with my former brother in law. He had been diagnosed Schizophrenic when he was around 20 years old.
When my ex-husband invited his brother to live with us for awhile, he was 26 I think, so he had had this diagnosis awhile. I did not really think much about it. He seemed for the most part a regular person. I know he had to take medication every day. And that my ex an I would be making sure he did not forget to take it. (Which we thought we were doing.) But after awhile I started noticing odd things (because I was staying at home all day- I had a 6 year old and infant). I started to become uncomfortable. He would start laughing hysterically in his room. And I would hear him talking in there (by himself). He started compulsively reciting the Quran too- even when he had not showered for days. (Muslims, or people who know Islamic customs will know that this is really odd behavior, because you have to be clean to even touch Quran.) His brother would have to fight with him to get into the shower sometimes.
A few times I woke up to find him staring at me. Or staring at the baby in the crib. When I would ask what was the matter he just looked blank and would turn around and go back into his room. My ex told me to lock the door whenever I took a nap and keep the kids with me. Because even he thought that was weird behavior.
I had a conversation my my brother in law, because it seemed like his medicines were actually not working anymore. I asked him if he is talking on the phone in his room. He started laughing weird and said that he could see Djinn. I was like OMG these medicines are not working at all. He also told me he first started to see Djinn after he saw a witch in the desert. We used to take vacations to Ouarzazate a lot, Near the Sahara. He said he saw a witch or fortune tell there. Maybe he did see someone and it effected him. He had a habit of wandering off into villages and talking to people when we would go places. He said the woman told him to bring her an egg, she opened it on a fire and said some spell and did something to him. After that he could see and speak to Djinn. I told my ex and that is when he explained more about his schizophrenia. And that maybe he should send him back to Morocco to his parents.
The last straw was when the smoke alarm started going off in the kitchen when I was napping with my kids in my locked room. I go out there and see him throwing herbs, salt, sugar in the oven... It looked like anything he could find in the kitchen he was adding to it. I was like what are you doing! Stop! He looked at me a said that he had to do it. He had to smoke the Djinn out of the house or they were going to hurt my daughter (the baby). He said other Djinn told him to do this. (Good Djiin. There are good and bad Djiin in Islamic lore.) His brother had to fly back to Morocco with him. (Escort him. And he did not go willingly. He even flushed his passport into the planes toilet and caused and huge problem.) Eventually his brother told him that he was not taking his medication. He thought the medication was making him worse, or not being able to know what the Djiin were up to. Anyway I have never been so freaked out in my life.
But everything defied logic or sense, and was random behavior, or spontaneous. Nothing provoked my brother-in-law. we would just be sleeping and in our own rooms and he would hallucinate or have auditory hallucinations. Chris Watts had an agenda. To be free and be with his mistress. It lends to reasonable conclusion that he was not having a psychotic episode when he did what he did.

I think your channel is better than Dr. Grande's channel. And it is different. I think you should keep doing what you are doing. I wish your videos were a bit longer. Only because I listen to UA-cam in the background of doing stuff. I have wifi headphones and listen to content while I work, clean, cook, fold laundry- whatever. Short videos lead to UA-cam picking my next content and taking me to Dr. Grande or random people's videos lol. I love Deep Dives. I like the Deep Dives of Dr. Kirk Honda, but most of his Deep Dives are on Patreon. And he does deep dives with colleagues so it's more like a discussion. I think this format is just nice to listen to. Especially when the two speakers are not 100% eye to eye on everything or they have different expertise.

So, a couple of things, hopefully this won't be too long as I tend to write long comments lol. First, CW's comment about 'being implanted', I agree that it was to take less culpability, but I also think it was a slip up in basically saying that, at least regarding Shan'nan, it WAS premeditated and that it is partly because he ISN'T a skilled criminal, so, it slipped out. I was glad you said what you did, at first, I thought you were going in a different direction regarding that statement. Second, I don't really care for the word 'Bullied' as in CW 'was bullied' into confessing, because I think partly, since he WASN'T of 'criminal mind' so to speak, he was basically outsmarted(as in, instead of 'bullied) by LE, which they do have the upper hand and skilled experience to put that pressure on a suspect, which I guess is a sort of 'Bullying' but in a legit way of knowing how to and taking control. And third, from other vids I've watched on UA-cam and in particular, a channel called Live Abuse Free, who I think is very good and a legit expert in mental health. Anyway, she talked about CW being a Covert Narcissist and the way she explained it, I kind of have to agree, because I believe CW lived a life undercover! Because he didn't have balls as you stated, was weak minded, but tended to be comfortable with strong, outspoken women, like his mom, Shan'nan and NK was also outspoken. I think he needed guidance throughout life and needed(or wanted) to look like the 'good guy' because I think it gave him, as she said on that channel, narcissistic supply'! Which actually made total sense, to me anyway. So I'm wondering, Dr, Das, what is your take on this? Also in regards to his mental status, regarding narcissism, can one be, or in particular CW, be a Suppressed or Repressed psychopath? Where if his narcissism was laying undercover, could psychopathy be an undercover trait as well? I do believe he has some sort of mental diagnosis and I believe he was sneaky undercover, without anyone knowing, therefore was able to keep things, basically, on the down-low and just needed the right circumstances to bring it to the surface. I've obviously thought a lot about this, as I am so interested in psychology(and mainly why I have a fascination with True Crime)and I had planned on studying it once upon a time. So what do you think Dr.? And one more, I love listening to you and I think you're pretty much right on the mark with your vids! Just wanted to say that!(AND your accent is really amazing to listen to also🤗)

Great video. Was wondering if you would be able to do an analysis on different films or programmes which have a mental health component please?
For example; 13 Reasons Why. (To me, it's heart is in the right place BUT it has some really dangerous messages around suicidal behaviour especially with not representing truthfully the lethality of certain methods that for young people could be very dangerous). Or Little Miss Sunshine? Or anything with prisons and what the film makers get right or wrong?
Sorry, thought it might be interesting having your views on it.

I’ve watched Dr Grande for years and he has never implied or stated he is a psychiatrist -ever. In the US anyone who earns a PHD is entitled to use “Dr”. If I were sitting on a jury I would want to know any experts full credentials but in a you tube video - who gives af. If someone makes assumptions and comes to the wrong conclusion that is on them-this is entertainment. He gives a disclaimer before every podcast stating he is giving his opinion. I enjoy hearing his opinion but would not give it much weight in court. On Bella Grande podcasts he discusses cases with two of his former students so I am well aware he is a teacher. He has discussed cases from his past so I believe he worked clinically at some point in his past. BTW I am a nurse who worked in clinical pharmaceutical research and had to review medical records. More times then not they had 3 or so different diagnosis in their past made by psychiatrists. Not talking personality disorders. Not uncommon to see Bipolar, Schizophrenia and / or Major Depression made by different psychiatrists through the years. Was difficult to put them on studies because all but one of these were exclusionary. So, at least in the US psychiatrists don’t agree with each other so-disagree with Dr G if you want but this constant attack is uncalled for. Maybe analyze your fixation on your chronic barrage of attacks of an entertainment content provider on you tube.

psychiatry is not very scientific...psychiatrists don't strike me as particularly intelligent, either (no where near as intelligent as physicists/philosophers/other academics). And most of these psychiatrists have many issues themselves... just look at this chap, he is pathologically jealous of Grande, needs to prop up his own self esteem by constantly mentioning how qualified he is... somebody send this guy a self-help book!

Sohom said Grande ''passively infers'' that his use of the title ''Dr'' refers to a medical qualification entitling him to make psychiatric diagnoses. make professional assessments etc. Where-as Grande's doctorate is as a PhD. I think it's fair to say he allows that confusion to work in his favour. I'm sure there are lots of PhDs in all all sorts of fields who don't use their Doctorate title as part of their youtube username. It's basically a canny, if not quite ethical imo, marketting ploy which plays on the very different ways of sticking ''Dr'' in front of your name.
Also the psychiatric jargon and diagnoses he uses which he isn't actually qualified to use in practice, and even his little intro with the textbooks, are all there to infer he's qualified in his opinions in some authoritative, accredited way.
You might argue that someone who is qualified to train counsellors has a lot more insight than someone with a PhD in Geography or something, but still he's definitely trying to clothe himself in a specific type of authority he doesn't actually have.
Now he's built a mass audience he doesn't bother so much. I was actually struck by how much time and thought Grande put into this old video compared to his usual leaden wiki type intro followed by laboured jokes and a bit of pop psychology. he pumps out But even after saying he'd worked for weeks on this video, and re-thought his 'analysis', he still made a really basic error.

If you're consuming the content of any social media personality expecting them to be right about everything or even have the highest degree of expertise, you've already lost. Dr. Grande puts out consistent content that's entertaining and informative. Do I agree with everything he says? Nope. Do i think he's misleading people or misinforming them to a harmful degree? Also no. Most importantly, do I ever have the urge to yell at the screen "STOP ADJUSTING WHATEVER YOU'RE AFJUSTING EVERY FIVE SECONDS!" while watching his conent? No I do not.
