PGA Tour players react to LIV Golf players filing antitrust lawsuit | Golf Today | Golf Channel
ua-cam.com/users/golfchannel?s... - Спорт
I dont understand why they allow European Tour players and not LIV tour players.
I thought LIV players wanted to play less golf and spend more time with families?
With that kind a money you can have multiple families. Lol
14 Liv events and a handful of PGA events is less golf. Mathematics is not a strength for you, I see.
@@johnerichsen2708 you do not get sarcasm, so English is not your strength.
Exactly
Right!
One thing is for sure, if I was a player on the PGA tour, I would be sick and tired of answering questions about another tour that they have nothing to do with LOL.
The right answer is, "I'm sorry, there's a lawsuit pending so I can't comment on that"
Speaking out is like the last thing you do when you're being sued
@@DanielSong39 The players are not being sued. It's the tour.
Then why are they so mad about it, even when they're not being asked questions? These were good questions to ask. These guys are sour. They're saying other guys are MORE sour. That's a heck of an accusation to throw around, that you're being detrimental to the PGA tour, when the other side is saying the PGA wants a monopoly on the sport. I'm a capitalist, I can't possibly side with the PGA. I don't think they'll win in court. They're afraid. Greg Norman has always had an issue with the PGA grabbing golf by the balls, as if they own the sport.
@@randomfullywonderful Legally speaking the best strategy is to maintain a poker face and state that they cannot comment due to the lawsuit
@@randomfullywonderful ...your a "CAPITALIST" explains your entire comment. More people should do this so readers can understand where you coming from. Having said this, there is no reason to provide any argument. You are only interested in making money. You have no ethics or morals ....or respect of tradition. You couldn't care less about the Saudi known culture of suppression either ......which ends the conversation.
.
Truly outstanding interviewing work by Ms. Dixon. She let the players speak and did not get in the way. Her few questions were the right ones to ask.
All she kept asking was How they were gonna respond to the players who attended the LIV. Like she was starting animosity between the 2. Glad the guys didn't feed into it. Kept it proffessional
strength of field matters, pga tour events are less watchable without Liv golfers period.... excluding Liv golfers from majors would directly impact prestige of those wins... using this as an excuse of failing on tour is weak mental game, which good pros generally do not experience
If LIV "representatives" have always thought there is nothing wrong with creating a "new league" .....what's the point in starting a lawsuit?
The wealthiest small society on the planet, thanks to oil being pulled out of the ground for 80 years ....at no cost to them, other than other people's money to do so .... with an inherent belief of suppression within their own ....with more money than than they know what to do with ...and likely the life-long experience of doing anything they want to do without any limitations ....simply draw on a couple of billion dollars at the whim of some guy to start up a different golf league ....throw out over billion dollars to a token few "famous" names just to "sign up" to "show up" ....under the publicly-claimed reason that there can be ...should be ...another golf league.
OK ....but can't the existing golf league have any "say" in the matter after the fact? If the established golf league simply makes their own decision that membership is one OR the other ....but not both .....isn't this their "right" to do so?
Beyond the above developmental logic, it now appears the LIV golfers have become "selective" in their approach to the tournaments. It doesn't matter why or how ....this is simply questionable to begin with. It kind of resembles "I want my cake and eat it too" mentality. All of this change has been under the LIV guise of a friendly "why not" attitude. Well if this is the case, what's with ANY kind of legal proceeding? This action now reveals what truly is going on from the beginning ......GREED WITHOUT MUCH, OR ANY, THOUGHT. This couldn't be more true than singling out Mickelson .....who was in a multi-million dollar debt situation due to his personal gambling problem. His signing with LIV for doing absolutely nothing and be paid $200 million reeks of desperation and GREED. He certainly is NOT a great golfer.
I think the PGA should simply amend their constitution now ....and grow with the times. Simply add a clause that players cannot belong to two leagues at the same time and anyone who has been a member of another league will not be considered eligible to join the PGA. Very simple. The players have their choice to make. LIV can exist or co-exist. It will be up to supporters, "fans", to decide what they want to do. It will likely be expensive for the Saudis ....but I very much doubt they care about any costs. HOWEVER, the fact that there has been a lawsuit issued ....is very telling ......and quite distasteful .....but again .....I doubt any LIV people care much what anyone thinks ......they just want money.
.
.

How many PGA players will play for LIV if the threat of a life time ban is not there?
It's so funny that these players are defending an abusive organization which is prohibiting them from making individual decisions that would better suit their needs and blocks their freedom.
How can they be blind to the fact that Jay Monahan strategy to defend the Tour is to abuse his power over the players!
If that threat is founded on illegal actions, I guess the PGA tour will find out
as many as their is now? did you really ask that question?

Joke is correct, your comment is a joke. They took more money to play less golf. Almost all of them said exactly that. Forget the courts...u got your money...why come back??? Cant have it both ways...greedy motherfkers!!!!
They signed a contract with a non-compete and clear penalties. LIV will lose this.
The PGA tour is totally wrong on banning players on LIV . Like any pro athlete they have a short window for competing and should make the most money they can . The tour has held back price money on players for years and should pay appropriately to players .
All the PGAT players can do is whine! lol. "why....why...why do they want to play our tour......"? Because they feel like it dude. They don't need to give you reasons. It's called competition. "but but but some guys aren't very happy....". Too bad. LIV is not trying to make you happy. LIV is doing what WINNERS DO. They got huge signing bonuses, the got huge prize money, less working hours and more fun....then....THEN, they said hey let's play on the PGA Tour as well if we feel like it. This is just super entertaining. LIV players are in a win/win situation.
The reason they're suing is pretty clear: these 11 members were members in good standing when they were suspended by the Commissioner. They had met all of their obligations to play 15 Tour events and several met the requirements to be in the FedEx Cup playoffs. The Commissioner suspended them for not getting a release to play in the LIV Tournaments; however, this requirement was not evenly applied for other non-Tour events, and most players never even applied for them. Therefore, applying the rule selectively against these players makes the rule arbitrary and capricious. Said differently, they wanted to punish these players for having the audacity to join a new lucrative venture. Most, if not all, of these 11 players would have continued their membership in the PGA Tour and would have met their obligations to keep their membership cards by ending the year in the top 125 players. They didn't quit the Tour, they were thrown out. Greg Norman said that the LIV contracts with their players will allow them to play in any other events when they play in the 14 events scheduled for 2023. Is the PGA cutting off its nose to spite its face? You could count on the LIV players to try and maintain their playing status in both leagues and, perhaps, LIV would make accommodations to PGA Tour players to play in some LIV events. Jay didn't put his brain in gear before he got a case of the ass.
Yes and on top of everything Phil is suppose to have a lifetime tour card. Which i guess now is meaningless.
Well put.
100% ACCURATE!!!
This is not accurate. As Davis love stated the rules of the PGA tour are written by the members which are the players, not the commissioner. Every player signs an agreement at the beginning of the year that they will not play for a competitive tour on US soil which is why they were not suspended when they played in London but once they played in Portland. They got waivers to play a Saudi event during the year because it was a one off, not a competitive tour. They are not independent contractors in the usual definition because they are offered group health insurance and are entitled to a pension. They have a 15 tournament obligation because the sponsors need to know that the tournament will have a good field. The sponsors pay the purse which is how the players get prize money. Gate money after overhead goes to charity. The PGA Tour is a non-profit and file tax returns every year to show that the majority of their income went to charity or they lose the non-profit designation. The PGA tour has donated over 2B to charity and LIV is paying players 2B to show up and play. Every one of the LIV players signed the non compete agreement which they helped write and knew exactly what the consequences would be when the left. It’s all about the $$$$ for them. They accused the PGA Tour of being greedy when they are the greedy ones.
@@patriciavernon9795 They were suspended even before the Portland tournament!
All the current PGA players should be thanking those players who left the PGA to join LIV....suddenly the PGA has increased prize money dramatically for next's years season..that wouldn't have happened if LIV had not happened...
The remaining pga members obviously do not want more competition. Just ask Tony Finou.

PGA tour members have it wrong. They went to LIV wanting to still play on PGA Tour....the PGA Tour instead suspended and fined them. Get the facts correct. The current LIV players wanted to play both tours from the beginning.
Did you think PGA Tour was going to be honest?
Most of them said they wanted to play less and earn more. Spend more time with the family, yada yada. In order to keep your massive LIV up front bribe you WILL be playing all 14 events next season. Oh PGA Tour did a lot more than that according to the 106 page lawsuit
They take money from a government that beheads detractors, hates women or gay rights, and was directly involved with 9/11. PGA tour players don’t. Case closed
Golf Channel is gas lighting the LIV hate. If the PGA would take care of its players, you wouldnt have an opposing tour that could easily come in and sway the top players.
If the PGA was the best tour that golf has the ability to offer, LIV would be another XFL, AFL, or USFL.
Solution is so simple. Work on the PGA or the LIV.
Just like you work for Apple or Samsung. Not both at same time.
Possibly not as simple as that. Some of the players normally play across multiple tours e.g. the SA players who play the sunshine tour, DP world tour and the PGA tour. That’s viewed as perfectly acceptable.
@@Arkade_Perfect interesting point, however I think the PGA can probably argue that those are acceptable as they don’t harm the standings or impact their schedule?

More commercials than fans at the LIV Saudi Trump fake tournament.
Why are pga tour players allowed to play the European tour, “double dipping” pga tour and European tour, and that’s not possible with LIV, that’s clearly antitrust conduct…
If there is another tournament that is directly opposite a PGA Tour event, a player must ASK FOR AND RECEIVE a clearance by the PGA Tour to play in that tournament. Players are allowed to do that for up to three events and they must play a minimum of 15 events to maintain their PGA Tour card. DP world tour members rules are different
But the PGA tour and the DP World Tour have a strategic alliance and are both owned by the PGA Tour
Because you have to be invited to LIV. It's not a real tour, and you know this. If LIV wants to pay FInau $10k as a signing bonus and pay Rory $200M, they can, and Finau can be the better player. That's not competition. But that's LIV.

Interesting that none of the PGA players have issues with PGA Tour rules being in breach of Anti-trust laws. That speaks very loudly to anyone who has ears to hear. If the player suspensions aren't legal, LIV golfers have every right to play where they choose.
Total illegal practices by the pga tour.

Can I just point out that Rory McIlroy who has been on his high horse about this Live Tour saga and how its undermining the PGA tour, he only plays in the flagship events. Look at his 2021 season, he doesn't support the tour in the smaller events. So I think he is a bit hypocritical. He hasnt even played since the open. Why is he not playing in the field this week? It's because he only wants to play in the big money events on the PGA tour. If he were to play in the smaller events on tour then he would be able to say all he wants but he doesn't. He picks and chooses where he plays based on the size of the event and the purse. And it works out at about 17 events per year including majors and WGC events.
Good points. Very true. Rory needs to be quiet on this matter.

Betting here that after the dust settles, the PGA will no longer be able to operate as a "charitable" or "non-profit" entity, and will have to legally officialize its business operations.
In 2018, the PGA Tour raked in $1.47 billion USD in revenues and only donated $42.7 million USD of that in charitable contributions, so any argument that they are a non-profit entity is almost guaranteed to be called into question by most judges and juries.
In addition, PGA players are not employees and do not have a CBA (collective bargaining agreement) like all other pro sports leagues in North America do (NHL/NFL/MLB/NBA).
Betting here that will also have to change.
On top of all this, the convoluted and very confusing ranking system, points system, entry system, and exemption status system, will all need to be completely overhauled and standardized under a new merit and qualification model.
It should also be noted that there are lots of players on the Korn Ferry Tour and other minor golf tours where it's not uncommon to see players living out of their cars.
So expect to see major changes made to player and caddie travel expenses having to be covered by the PGA moving forward, which may also extend to the DP World European and Korn Ferry Tours.
If the above list of conceptual changes were already envisioned and implemented by Jay Monahan and the PGA ahead of time, LIV Golf might never have come into existence in the first place.
One thing that is definitely for sure, though, is that Greg Norman is smarter than Jay Monahan.
POST OF THE DAY!!!
Whatever, what about the NFL. Same BS. The politicians decide how the rich earn their spoils.
Before you type your BS . Read and COMPREHEND that the PGA tour charitable donations in 2020 was 204 million . 3 Billion total to date . 42 million in 2018 was probably for a couple of big tournaments . Greg Norman is a traitor and ANYONE could have started a tour with 2 billion
Take a look at the PGA Tour tax return. The “charities” that are meaningful are getting peanuts while the Tiger Woods foundation and Tigers tourney are getting millions. Pga tour associated charities….world golf association, first tee, world golf hall of fame are getting $millions from PGA Tour. Altruistic charities like St Jude’s get $100k. PGA Tour takes credit for “$billions” raised by the local charities that put on the tourneys. Calling the PGA tour a charitable organization is disingenuous at best. I enjoy golf, but can’t watch anything except the majors.
Not true. The LIV tour will ultimately fold for being exposed as the sham that it is. No TV contract, no corporate sponsors. No incentive for the players to try and make a cut as their is none. Who wants to see an over hyped golf exhibition with a bunch of has beens and wanna bees. This league would be comparable to a league trying to compete with the NFL and starting a new league with a bunch of old players and unproven rookies trying to compete against the NFL. What a joke. You will see that Jay Monahan will outsmart Greg Norman, who has had a vendetta against the PGA for decades. Norman is starting the LIV tour, not as a brilliant idea to help golf. Rather an act of sour grapes at In an attempt to thwart the PGA for personal reasons. It frankly won’t work and eventually blow up in his fave. The supporters of LIV are a vocal minority that have no real corporate plan. A league solely funded by another nation. That would be like the United States funding a rival soccer league in Europe to go against the Premier League. A nation should not be funding rival leagues in other nations solely for the benefit of fulfilling a vendetta by one of it’s citizens. Name one other sports league in the United States, which supports free enterprise, that is solely funded by an outside nation. Good grief.
BS! Players from the European Tour are allowed to play in the PGA Tour, it should be not different for the LIV tour as well. All players are independent contractors.
Shut up
These guys are just pissed off that they did not get the invite. This makes the PGA players happy because it is less competition.
Nobody’s is talking about the money that the PGA has found for next year
Nobody asks where that money has to come from. What parts of the golf industry that the PGA promotes and supports, is going to have to lose out? Just like LIV fans don't care about who is supplying the endless cash for their meaningless, glorified corporate events.
If you want a reasonable outcome, don’t expect litigation to resolve issue.
Its all theatre Brother. Gearing up for 2 leagues and then events where the top players from both leagues play.
I don't understand that anti-trust aspect. They are independent contractors but it's not like they're plumbers or carpenters. It would be like Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods deciding to make extra money by ALSO signing an endorsement deal with Reebok and wear those shoes half the time and half the time Nikes.
I don't think Nike is out of line putting in their contracts with these guys that they only wear their shoes, if they want the endorsement deal.
so, should one of the employees be fired from Nike because they are wearing Reebok sneakers? Tiger Woods is technically an employee of Nike. Do those rules only apply to him? Is it only him? Or is it everyone? anti-trust laws are put in place to promote healthy competition within an industry. the PGA clearly doesn't want any more competition than they already have, and that's telling to me. they're scared.

@@PaulSchober of course I would be okay with that. I’m not paying him to not wear someone else’s shoes. I’m paying him to wear mine. But the PGA is claiming it's in their contract with players that they only play for the PGA full-time and not for a competing tour. I don't like monopolies either, but if a player has signed that contract, IMO he has to honor it. It would be like Tiger wearing someone else's shoes to an event.
The players have every right to sue if they think they have been wronged, that is how it works in a free country. The courts will decide if their case is warranted and if the PGA have done nothing wrong then they have nothing to worry about.
So I guess Saudi Arabia is a free country then?

They don’t have monopoly. Where do you get tour can play on the Dp World Tour or the European Tour as those tours follow the same even guidelines as the PGA Tour. Those tours all have a 72 hole format with a 36 hole cut line. The LIV tour plays 54 holes with no cut. Give me a break. If you post a comment, at least be knowledgeable of what you are referring to. The LIV players do not want to be held to the same 15 tournament minimum participation foe the PGA. They want to cherry pick the events they want to play AND them play the 14 events they are required to with their contract to LIV. That is not how the PGA is structured. In order to get sponsors to sponsor events on the PGA tour they want to know that as many PGA players will participate in their event. It’s like the NFL that has a 17 game schedule and some teams only want to play in 14 and be considered to participate in the playoffs and Superbowl even though they play less games. That’s not how it works. The USFL is a rival league to the NFL, but you don’t see teams competing in other leagues. What are your thoughts on the NBA, NHL and MBL. Don’t they have monopolies as well? Do you complain about them?

No. The PGA is used to every player having to go by their rules. Time is up
Just go play the Asian Tour. If the Asian Tour is sponsoring LIV, just go play there. Why do they need to play PGA Tour events? They said no to the PGA Tour. Play LIV, play the Asian Tour, but leave the PGA Tour. How hard is that?
Yes, IF playing Asian tour events coincide with PGA tour events. That's the issue here, conflicting events. When you're streaming shows, you don't just have Netflix anymore, you have Amazon, Crave, AppleTV, etc... It doesn't make it worse for the person at home watching, just makes it better. It's the same with golf, if you have two leagues competing against one another, they are both competing for your viewership, and they will have to compete against one another to create the best golf tournaments and TV broadcasting to succeed. When you only have one head honcho, they can do or not do whatever they want and the quality will suffer. But when you have more than one, they will do their best to ensure quality. Therefore, the fans win at the end of the day.
Agree, and they should stick to their own tours. A Ryder Cup style PGA vs. LIV tourney would be phenomenal.

My perspective is that LIV is great for breaking up the monopoly on golf. I don't think most people would have been mad if what they did was NOT successful. True, but I can see both sides. I can understand all sides and super curious to see how it is handled. If it goes to court proceedings and how it is ruled. If in favor of LIV, other sports organizations like arr going to have to start analyzing these issues. It's already happened/happening with the UFC and fighters who are technically "contractors". And like whats going on here, if you leave the UFC on your own decision to fight in another organization, you wont ever fight in the UFC again. Players are independent contractors. They have said that over and over. The PGA Tour and the LIV Tour and the players have all said that. So, last time I checked there is no requirement for a business (PGA Tour) to do business with an independent contractor (player). They chose to walk away and go to LIV. I don't understand how they can sue to do business with the PGA Tour? If they are independent, then the PGA Tour should also have independence in who they do business with in their tournaments. The question is why did the USpga tour suspend them unlike every other tour it's members go to play, Euro, Japan,,,
If any LIV players who have earned enough points this year to qualify for the Fedex cup, then they should be allowed to play. One argument I would make is that, then, LIV has to pay ANY PGA TOUR PLAYER that goes over there the average of their ranking in the world. So if C.Smith goes over to LIV, he gets $200M, and Rory too, and Finau $100M...all of them can go, Every single PGA TOUR PLAYER signs with LIV, and they ALL GET TO PLAY IN THE PLAYOFFS WITH THE PGA, and everything goes back to normal next year. But LIV must give a contract to every single PGA and DP TOUR member. Does LIV have 20--40 Billion to spread around every year? Play 7-8 LIV tour events, shoot 78 like Phil. Move on to next year, and everybody wins. I really think PGA Tour players need to fight fire with fire.

I thought they were demanding that as independent contractors, they want to be able to play if and when and probably most importantly where they wanted. The players being interviewed most all seem to say or insinuate the LIV players want to play ever week. Not true.
Bruh, the insinuation was that LIV players wanted to play LESS golf. In order to have a PGA Tour card, you have to play in at least 15 events. LIV Golf is going to 14 events next year. That is at least 29 events that they would HAVE TO play. That's not less golf. That's not what THEY said they left for.

Well they only have to play 15 in order to meet Tour requirements, but they'll likely have to play many more to earn enough points to keep their card, and make it the Playoffs. But they knew that when they left it was cutting the cord from the PGA Tour.
@@max420mtbchannel7 and football is Patrick Mahomes job -- maybe he can go play in another league for $100 million a year as well as the NFL?
@@MoMoMyPup10 slightly different being a team over an individual golfer.
@@max420mtbchannel7 not really, not at the root. These individual golfers chose to join a league that has rules (rules that are actually made by the players) that regulate your behavior and limit your flexibility to play anywhere you want, just like an NFL player. Except the golfer has more freedom to play on other tours. An NFL player has to play for one team and one league, unless they get _permission_ to do so, ala Bo Jackson. Like I said, Pat Mahomes can't go play for some NFL startup league in Europe that wants to pay him $100 million a year. He would void his NFL contract by doing so. No different.
I hear what a lot of folks are saying in terms of “why can’t they play for both but it’s literally direct competition. It makes sense that the PGA would want to enforce a non-compete. They aren’t just like independent contractors since they still earn money on the PGA tour even when they don’t win. Any direct competition to PGA events (in terms of ticket sales, viewership, and sponsors) reduces the earning of everyone else who plays on the tour. LIV has a different model. Which is fine. But it makes sense that the PGA tour would respond this way. From an anti-trust perspective, I don’t think LIV will win this. It will be a long protracted legal battle but LIV will lose this.
I think one thing that does need to change is the PGA Tour’s standing as a non-profit. Like, seriously? +$1 billion in revenue…you’re not a non-profit.
Well, I think you have most of it correct ....some things very speculative.
The "revenue" amount can be high and still be "non-profit". Everything gets audited, so as long as they do NOT make any profit ...nothing wrong. The "winnings' distributions can easily address any "overages".
.
Its funny these players forget we fans watching the PGA tour for the Golfers. Not beacuse its named PGA. Money coming from your backs? Phil Mickelson has done more for the game these guys ever will. It rubs u the wrong way the PGA said if u plav LIV u cant play the PGA and double dip? What about Asian tour/Europen tour? PGA players still play those events. Why cant everyone play everywere? The President Of The United States just went and made a deal with saudi. Apparently he doesnt think its a big deal either
