I’ve run both mb 550 and duke 550s and I have to go with mb. It’s now the same price for both traps where I get them. The mbs set nicer smoother not as stiff very nice …. Both r nice traps but I gotta give it to MBs … they r nicest trap on the market n my opinion.

I've had a coyote pull out of a duke 550 before. I think their claw tripped the trap with the square pan and the trap caught it's toes. I've never had a MB give me any trouble. For me it's MB550 all the way...
I like the Dukes myself for the same reason. btw had to laugh when you started out holding them with gloves then forgot to put the gloves back on when you put the phone down. That's something id do. LOL
Ive been using duke 550 and 650 for awhile and no complaints either. I bought a couple mb550 just to see myself and definitely will keep adding more dukes to my line .love your videos and good luck on this years trapping season trap on
Glad i found this video before buying. I found duke 550 at a amish store less than 2 miles from my house where as mb i would have to order. Looks like the wife is going to get pissed come next week
I bought a Duke 550 from Fleming to put me over to get free shipping and to raise the trap arsenal to an even dozen. Havent used it yet. Pan tension is off scale high so some filing will need to be done.

I use mb 550 hands down! American made! I wouldn't care it duke was an exact replication, I'd still buy American made. If duke would have Americans build his traps, giving jobs on this side of the pond, i'd support him as well. After modifications on dukes, your into it $5 more anyway. If a guy is worried about $5 dollars, he may really need to review his lifestyle. And c'mon. Copying off the mb? Not genuine at all. Come up with your own better trap duke.
When I decided to start trapping I watched a lot of videos read all the reviews. I went with the mb550, being that it was made in the USA and built stronger than the others. Plus it didn't require any adjustments. Now I see that duke has copied the mb, I'll stick with the mb over duke just for the fact that it's made in USA instead of Korea. As for dp's I went with PCS featherlite from wildlife control supplies. Again made in USA and are cast aluminum and stainless. No rust. Same price as Duke.
but Duke doesnt lay flat when set without modification...if that is big deal to you the $21 may be worth it compared to time, modifications or if you have to replace any parts on Duke to get it flat. If dont matter.....then is definitely a savings. I like that the MB lays flat, does not need any tuning before use....and is made in USA. The extra is worth it to me....
They definitely have. My first trap was a Duke and the amount of improvement they’ve had in just the few years I’ve been trapping is incredible. I hope they keep it up!
I love the Duke 550’s and the 650’s are even better. That pan level will adjust to fit down in there like the MB’s. I own both MB’s and the Dukes and I like the pans better on the Dukes. I buy American and foreign but I sell my fur to foreign therefore the trade off is I’ll buy some of their stuff. That’s just me 🤷🏻♂️ I’m not going to sit here on my China made I phone and tell you I only buy American when I own a lot of overseas stuff. It seems to be a big deal in the trapping world but they’ll all use Duke bodygrippers. Lol 👍 great video bro
Just started watching your videos yesterday, I used to just call them in and dispatch them with the 5.56 have a bunch out there in the fields. I just ordered 6 Minnesota Brand 550 off eBay. didnt quite understand the waxing and 4 coil reduced to 2 coil springs as the seller mentioned. trying to watch more of your videos also need to get some bait and lure. tools to dig, hammer stakes etc. what do you do with the live Yotes you caged up. Id like to bring them somewhere without having to put them down but they'll just be a problem for someone else. and I dont want them near my fields they're killing all my deer and some domestic pets have gone missing I suspect the Yotes.
The difference is in the pan tension. MB will trip at 2 to 3lb and the Dukes will trip at 5lb plus. You can adjust the dog to compensate. I run the Duke and adjusted the dogs on my old traps to get a lighter pan tension. Just bought 24 more Dukes and I'm going to replace the dogs with MBs. I also 4 coiled mine this year. Lost 5 dogs last year due to pull outs.
I trap in Robeson, Bladen, and Columbus counties. No toes, just tracks and fur. Big dogs can snatch out the double coils. Got a friend who's been trapping for years and he warned me about the double coils. 4 coiled all mine this year. Just hope I don't get any finger tips hung in them, they close pretty hard now...lol
I’ve caught hundreds of dogs and have only had one pull out of the 2 coil. Pulled up to the trap and watched him bounce couple of times and then he ran off. It was a toe catch. Most disappointing thing I’ve ever seen lol
I love it. It’s great on scent post sets and flat sets. It’s not extremely strong skunky smell but it does have its own stink about it. It’s a pretty mild lure, I highly recommend it
I use violator 7 on my wolf sets To date violator 7 has caught 4 wolves all on dirt hole sets. (Not taking away from the author just confirming it’s a good lure)
Just off my pedestal, saw a video on how to set pan tension, some trappers think you get less misses with around 3 pounds of tension. What are your thoughts?

Im running the mb traps right now and somehow i had a coyote get out of one examining the jaw there was hair and a small amount of skin left on it idk if it chewed its foot off or mabe to much wax or mud got to the trap but either way i like both traps i just got some duke 550sin the mail the other day and im eager to get them out
Sounds like a toe catch. That’s very common no matter what trap you’re running. It was either caused from the coyote not putting all of its weight on the catchable foot or that the trap was slow to close the jaws and allowed the coyote to pull its foot up just enough to where it only caught 1 toe.
I have a mixed bucket of traps, some old duke coil and long spring, some newer duke coil traps and a couple of mb550’s it’s hard to find better quality out the box than the mb traps
I'm thinking about trapping myself. Looking at traps. I found some duke 550's and 650's like the MB's your showing. But not sure with Size to use for coyotes. I live 30 miles east of Asheville, nc. Any help would be appreciated.

For all intents and purposes they are the same trap. However the mb650 and duke 650 and completely different from each other. I don't know if you all can run 650s down there but that would make for a great video some time.
Have you found any metal strength issues between the 2 I was reading on trapperman forum that dukes lever arms bend wondering you experienced any of that ?!!!
I haven’t had an issue with the MB. The ONLY time I’ve ever had the levers bent on the MB was when a big coyote got the chain rapped around the trap somehow. But that’s the only time I’ve had that happen. In my opinion the MB is a better trap but the Duke’s are cheaper to buy
I leave the four coil on cause It holds anything. I’ve been able to release dogs from them without an issue no cuts, just a little roughed I’ll hair. This is with the four coil
Just getting into coyote trapping in the western end of NC. I currently have Duke #2 traps. Other than the swivel point attachment is their any other major differences??
The Duke 550 is the most durable coyote trap that Duke provides. I used to have #2 as well when I first started because they were cheaper to purchase. But you get what you pay for. I constantly had #2 getting bent and was always having to work on them after 1-3 catches. The only time I ever work on my 550s is if the farmer runs over them with his tractor. I know the Duke and MB 550s are more expensive, but trust me they are worth every penny

Hey, this may be a silly question but how can you tell if you have a coyote or a raccoon? We are in a suburb in Belmont NC and something got one of the chickens. I’ve heard you mention selling. Who buys these things?
One has a space between the Jaws (offset jaw) so they don’t close completely shut. Truth be told the gap actually helps hold large critters better. It allows the lever to close further up the jaw where the leverage is better. The other one the jaw closes completely. Don’t get (4)- coiled it’s way too much unless you are trapping 80# coyotes. You want to catch and hold animals not cut there foot off!! The offset jaw (I believe) is the MB RC 550. Most widely excepted as the best out of the box coyote trap in the history of traps!! If you go with the 550 go,with the American MB-550. It is made in America by a husband/wife family owned and operated business. What’s wrong with that?? They are hard working people have some of the best lure money can by or at least I feel so. There are a host of other good lure manufacturers out there as well. God bless!!
Check the trapping regulations for where you are trapping. NC requires at least 3/16 offset for land traps. Jaw type doesnt matter. They will all hold the animal. If trapping fur or keeping them alive consider laminated or soft jaws too.
Last year was my first year trapping. My Dukes have rusted over the summer. Do I need to re dye them and get them all cleaned up again? Or just use them rusted? Thanks man
I have 6 Bridger #2 dogless dyed and waxed. Also 5 Dukes( #2 and #3) painted with Rustoleum. The painted traps work just as well. Dukes were my first traps and used 2 years bare metal. The rust was really bad but they still caught. Since then have base plated, new music wire springs, nightlatched and painted. They are my catch anything and everything traps.
New rust is what the coyote smells I tried cutting corners with speed dip. Coyote and wolf smells the trap I ended up boiling in middle of season and got catches. I never wax only boil and it needs to be done every summer aka called trap maintenance. Skunk fox badger porcupine beaver muskrat raccoon don’t seem to be bothered by the speed dip/full metal jacket But coyote and wolf dig up the speed dipped traps. I’ll never use that again nor will I advertise for em. It’s the new rust that they smell. Boil your traps every summer. Guy who taught me to trap catches 120 some coyotes every year with 80 traps.. I catch 80 every year so my words are not empty I do know up to a point what I’m talking about lol Have a great year!

Yes they feel very much the same! Now which one will hold that strength the longest overtime is what I question. But you can always replace the coils or add 2 more to give it the strength back that it lost

Duke is made in korea MB made in the USA NO BRAINER FOR A FEW MORE BUCKS BUY MADE IN AMERICA. Traps last a lifetime. We have to think first for our country and our workers. PERIOD. Please also always look to buy American products. If you look hard enough you can find them. Just dont only shop at walmart. I find hunters, trappers and fisherman are the most patriotic and more likely to realize how important it is to keep jobs in USA.

Must be they caught up to you selling live critters but throwing in a few seconds of Bambi won't change your character. BTW it's against North Carolina law to hunt over, or even near bait. Also; by the look of those deer, they're not worth the bait!!
I use MB and am happy with them. I’ll pay more for a product any day of the week to keep an American in a job.

I have both and the only other difference I noticed was in the swivels and j hooks.
Duke #650 is my favorite but I'm giving the #550 a try this year.

I'll neer buy another Duke. Had to re-build everyone I bought. I stopped after the third one and put them on E-Bay. I used MB and Bridger.

Duke does not have music wire sping like the MB. 4 coil or replace with MB main springs. I also replaced the dog with an MB

Duke 550s are a hell of a trap!!! you need to try the duke #2 dogless they bed like a dream

Honestly I use what ever trap will hold yotes, fox, bobcats

Yes I have noticed that. I’ve had to fix a few of them while setting here recently. It’s not that hard to fix but definitely gets aggravating

The duke 2 dogless are even a better deal. I take the 4 coil off because it's over kill imo. A dozen for 110 ish great deal.
I leave the four coil on cause It holds anything. I’ve been able to release dogs from them without an issue no cuts, just a little roughed I’ll hair. This is with the four coil
Leave the 4 coil on for a faster trap.

Just getting into coyote trapping in the western end of NC. I currently have Duke #2 traps. Other than the swivel point attachment is their any other major differences??
The Duke 550 is the most durable coyote trap that Duke provides. I used to have #2 as well when I first started because they were cheaper to purchase. But you get what you pay for. I constantly had #2 getting bent and was always having to work on them after 1-3 catches. The only time I ever work on my 550s is if the farmer runs over them with his tractor. I know the Duke and MB 550s are more expensive, but trust me they are worth every penny

Hey, this may be a silly question but how can you tell if you have a coyote or a raccoon? We are in a suburb in Belmont NC and something got one of the chickens. I’ve heard you mention selling. Who buys these things?

Née to trapping, looking to buy a trap. They have spring coiled then they have spring coiled offset jaws. What’s the difference? Which would I need?
You’d want to get spring coiled offset jaws
One has a space between the Jaws (offset jaw) so they don’t close completely shut. Truth be told the gap actually helps hold large critters better. It allows the lever to close further up the jaw where the leverage is better. The other one the jaw closes completely. Don’t get (4)- coiled it’s way too much unless you are trapping 80# coyotes. You want to catch and hold animals not cut there foot off!! The offset jaw (I believe) is the MB RC 550. Most widely excepted as the best out of the box coyote trap in the history of traps!!
If you go with the 550 go,with the American MB-550. It is made in America by a husband/wife family owned and operated business.
What’s wrong with that?? They are hard working people have some of the best lure money can by or at least I feel so.
There are a host of other good lure manufacturers out there as well.

Check the trapping regulations for where you are trapping. NC requires at least 3/16 offset for land traps. Jaw type doesnt matter. They will all hold the animal. If trapping fur or keeping them alive consider laminated or soft jaws too.
Last year was my first year trapping. My Dukes have rusted over the summer. Do I need to re dye them and get them all cleaned up again? Or just use them rusted? Thanks man
Just dye them and toss em in the gground. Fmj them if you want. They'll catch. Don't over think trapping. If they're not set they won't catch.
You have to dye and wax them every year before trapping. This helps keep your traps scent free while they’re set in the ground!
I have 6 Bridger #2 dogless dyed and waxed. Also 5 Dukes( #2 and #3) painted with Rustoleum. The painted traps work just as well. Dukes were my first traps and used 2 years bare metal. The rust was really bad but they still caught. Since then have base plated, new music wire springs, nightlatched and painted. They are my catch anything and everything traps.

I tried cutting corners with speed dip. Coyote and wolf smells the trap
I ended up boiling in middle of season and got catches. I never wax only boil and it needs to be done every summer aka called trap maintenance. Skunk fox badger porcupine beaver muskrat raccoon don’t seem to be bothered by the speed dip/full metal jacket
But coyote and wolf dig up the speed dipped traps. I’ll never use that again nor will I advertise for em. It’s the new rust that they smell. Boil your traps every summer. Guy who taught me to trap catches 120 some coyotes every year with 80 traps.. I catch 80 every year so my words are not empty I do know up to a point what I’m talking about lol

Yes they feel very much the same! Now which one will hold that strength the longest overtime is what I question. But you can always replace the coils or add 2 more to give it the strength back that it lost
