Once for a wedding gift I made herbal vinegars and oils and put in a basket with other items and the bride was delighted. Some rubs and your wonderful salt could be added too. I have a neighbor that would love this for a gift!!!
OMG! Thank you! lol I have a friend who is a chef and I had seriously NO CLUE what to get him for Christmas! This is perfect! And I think I will make several different ones too!!! Thanks sooooooooooooooooo MUCH!!!
Thanks for the great idea--I'm meeting my boyfriend's mom for the first time this Christmas and was looking for something home-made to give her. She loves cooking so this will be perfect :)
My experience is that when matel mix with salt, if you don't use it up soon, the jar will corrode with rust. Store it in a really dry place, eg, your fridge. or a dry room. It's a really important point to note when you live in humid countries.
thanks chef John. I'm gonna make this for my grandma. She cooks a lot and this will be a great and healthy alternative to the regular salt she uses. :)
@lovecandieee Well, I guess You could use this receipe for that purpose also. But instead of rosemary, maybe something like lavender or rose flowers or so may do it better. And, in case You want to be on the safe side: better don´t use metal lids. Metal looks nice, but due to the salt it may corrode, if You store the container in Your bathroom.
this is BEAUTIFUL!!!! i am kinda poor for christmas this year, being the only income in my house and all so im definetly going to make this for the family instead of cookies or caramel sauce like I did in the past
@slayer7160 Rosemary and thyme go well on most meats. This salt would be great on roasted potatoes as well. Grilled things and Mediterranean dishes would be good too.
For this recipe, what size jars did you use and how many could you fill? The smallest mason jar we could get is an 8 oz, and I have a feeling 1.5 cups ofherb salt will fill the whole jar up.
You amaze me. Has anyone ever told you that you are brilliant? Sure they have. I just did. Do you have any recipies on making home made bread in a bread machine?
@foodwishes wow look how easy to make them..!! I better prepare to make them and give them for my christmas give..!! By the way this herb salt are best to used with what..?? any suggestion?? and beside of rosemary and lemon thyme what other herbs can be used to make this herbs salt..?? thhaaannnkkss..
can you let the rosemary dry first before doing this? Or fresh is better? And if it is fresh, do you have to dry for a few days before placing in jars? i thought it would get moldy if not completely dry.
Srs question! What would this go well on? I mean FF sounds not that great, and on the lable says use "on" is it like go in the bath, like bath salt's or do you just rub salt on yourself!? Srs answers only plz.
@carbine36 depends what you mean by 'work'. it would certainly have a distinct aroma but I doubt you could get high off it. Depends who you wish to give it to :)
Hi, (slapping my head) why didn't i think of this myself? what a great idea! Make it any style you want! Can anyone recommend combinations? Joe from Germany
@Hewhosmokeswomen not because of the heat, it will mess up the flavor because drying herb salt is like cooking with a lid on versus drying it under the sun. Due to the fact that the oven is a closed container with no ventilation. Think of this, to reduce the liquid of any sauces you would have to turn up the heat and take off the lid just so the water can escape, and in the oven is like turn up the heat with the lid on. That was my logic, I could be wrong you should try a small batchout yourself
@Hewhosmokeswomen yes it will ruin it! because oven is an air-tight container, think of this if you put a raw steak in it will it come out to be a piece of jerky? you might want to test it in a microwave.

The OG rosemary salt
@MrCrowley1018 you'd be surprised how many modern youtube food channels stole from chef john, from babish to weissman to sonny
@@josiahlutchman4913 wouldn't really call it stealing, you can't really "own" a recipe. I've seen most of John's recipes in very old cookbooks.
Nah. ThatDudeCanCook uses garlic and, most importantly, lemon zest in his mix. That is like 50x the flavor and freshness. But this looks good too.
Once for a wedding gift I made herbal vinegars and oils and put in a basket with other items and the bride was delighted. Some rubs and your wonderful salt could be added too. I have a neighbor that would love this for a gift!!!
I love the timing for this recipe; it's just relieved me the stress of thinking of an additional gift to get a few of my foodie friends.
OMG! Thank you! lol I have a friend who is a chef and I had seriously NO CLUE what to get him for Christmas! This is perfect! And I think I will make several different ones too!!! Thanks sooooooooooooooooo MUCH!!!
That's the perfect gift for my dad. He used to be a chef, you know? He's gonna be impressed I know what a finishing salt is (now).
I do this also with lavender... great salt !
Chef John, you've made my holidays! I have both rosemary and lemon thyme in my herb garden this year!
Thanks for the great idea--I'm meeting my boyfriend's mom for the first time this Christmas and was looking for something home-made to give her. She loves cooking so this will be perfect :)
I never would have thought of this and that's why I love this channel. Another great tip from the Chef!

Very cool! It looks so gourmet, but it's so simple! Awesome idea :) It'd be cute to tie a little recipe to the jar too.

You can get screw caps for ball jars. The black lid is tighter than white lid.
Great idea! This would fit the person I have no idea what to get ;)
that's so cool.... so we don't have to dry the herbs to do this... great to know. Thanks Chef John !!

Do you have any recipies on making home made bread in a bread machine?
Vinnie Sutra there’s better bread. Look up long fermentation bread and you will make the most gorgeous artisan breads with little work in your oven.
@Cidaldragon we chefs use salt so it taste better. it really really depends on the thing we want salted
@kikomiko1 Yes, that's how they serve it at the top restaurants. ;-)
@foodwishes wow look how easy to make them..!! I better prepare to make them and give them for my christmas give..!! What kind of herbs do you recommend using for fries if the person doesn't like rosemary?
Srs question! What would this go well on? I mean FF sounds not that great, and on the lable says use "on" is it like go in the bath, like bath salt's or do you just rub salt on yourself!? Srs answers only plz.
Could this be done with fresh garlic? Or should we dry the garlic before blending?
Chef John, can you tell me where you got the jar?
@carbine36 depends what you mean by 'work'. it would certainly have a distinct aroma but I doubt you could get high off it. Depends who you wish to give it to :)
