Absolutely underrated and underappreciated for the amount of influence they provided for Hard Rock and Metal. Ritchie knew how to pick musicians. Not to start a war between fanbases, but Led Zep is given wayyyyy more credit for Metal than I feel they gave. I would say they did a lot more for Prog Rock, which is also fantastic, but Metal? That was Deep Purple, Rainbow, and the one and only Black Sabbath.

Ian Gillan was a fantastic front man; I know Episode Six regretted his leaving for Purple. Still worse was when he left Deep Purple and doctors found nodules on his throat. Doctors operated on him and said he would be fine as long as he rested his voice for a few months - no singing at all. Alas, Black Sabbath came calling, and Ian permanently wrecked his amazing rock voice. He gets the rep as such a bad singer for the Sabs, but he was under doctors' orders to rest his voice and not push it at that time. Now, arguably, and definitely from my POV, Ian was the worst, but he could have been at least second best if he had listened to his doctors. Ozzie was second best, but could have been third best if the Sabs had waited until Ian's voice was fit (if he ever told them, of course). But, as it was, I have to cite the small but mighty Ronnie James Dio as the greatest Sabbath vocalist of all time. But a fit Ian Gilllan could have given even Ronnie James a run for his money, and I love Dio and Elf, as well as Dio-era Sabbath. I am by no means dissing Ozzie, but I feel his greatest tracks have been non-Sabbath tracks. Though, in retrospect, Paranoid really could only have been sung by Ozzie.But Heaven and Hell, Children of the Sea or Neon Nights without RJD? Forget it, and I can at least imagine Ronne James doing an amazing Iron Man, even though I never heard him sing it.
Deep Purple is in my opinion one of the greatest Rock Bands in History.
