      By the way, the Transformers crossover is really neat! The episodic-style of the missions for G.I. Joe and the way you go on missions with vehicles is extremely satisfying. You made the right choice! Please let me know what you think about it after you play it. Just this past weekend, I ordered the Raise the Flag expansion that adds an actual campaign to the game that gives you a progression system as you advance. There’s been some really good expansions for G.I. Joe.

    Great video dude! When I was watching the art section, I was torn because both looked so good and I was really curious what you were going to go with haha. And I would have given them both a tie as well, so close. Theme is important to me, if you can get the game to feel like you are what you're playing, I instantly like the game a little bit more. So when you gave the point to G.I. Joe I knew that's the one I would end up getting if I had the chance. Helps that the gameplay ended up being better as well. Nice take on these games. I tend to agree that with the base boxes, G.I. Joe feels a little tighter and more complete of an experience. However, I don't agree with your assessment of the randomness mitigation. Those dice are brutal. All your prep can easily come to nothing if you just roll badly. 50/50 success rate is hard on dice. Also, some of the COBRA characters can really make the missions hard. It's a much harder game to win and my friend and I failed the two missions we played. I think it's a great set up for a coop game, and is clearly designed that way.
    On the other hand, I think Transformers is actually intended to be played as a competitive game, and although I haven't played it that way yet, I think it might work much better that way. A good portion of the rulebook is dedicated to when you can assist players and have to accept assistance from other players when battling. Most of that is thrown out in coop/solo. It's also clear they set this game up with the Decepticon expansion in mind. It will be interesting when that comes out and you can play competitively with Decepticon and Autobot players. I agree that it seems like more bosses should have been included.

    • @SoloBoardGamingKnight
      @SoloBoardGamingKnight  2 роки тому +1

      I can’t argue with your points. There are both pros and cons for both of these deck-builders. Yes, the dice in G.I. Joe can cause randomness and Transformers seems to be more focused on the competitive side of the game. Either way, they both serve different purposes and audiences.
      Personally, G.I. Joe is the game that I come back to often and I think about every now and then. Going on missions using a variety of vehicles is very enjoyable! Yes, there is randomness when it comes to the dice and a bad roll can be very frustrating. However, when rolls go your way, it’s extremely satisfying. Also, there’s a nice amount of cards that offer some mitigation that truly comes in handy.
      With that written, I’m still looking forward to the Transformers expansion. I’ve preordered the G.I. Joe expansion but I will end up getting both, eventually. I think they both will offer a nice amount of variety and change to their base games.
      Your take was an enjoyable read. Thanks for sharing and hopefully the future expansions will keep giving these games the longevity they deserve. Take care.

    Your comparison about replayability is skewed. Your take on transformers is that you could play 1 game of 3 bosses and a 2nd game of the remaining 3 bosses, experiencing all the bosses within 2 games.
    However, GI Joe you can do the exact same. Play 3 missions for each act on one playthrough with scenario 1, then play the remaining 2 missions (and one duplicate mission) for a second playthough with scenario 2. Within two games you can experience all the missions the game had to offer...
    Due to how the bosses are mixed and hiding in the matrix, there is an unfathomable amount of replays that will be different based on when and where the boss is revealed.

    • @SoloBoardGamingKnight
      @SoloBoardGamingKnight  Рік тому +1

      They both are similar when it comes to content but personally, I found G.I. Joe to be more replayable due to the enjoyment I have going on the missions and with its gameplay. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel the same with Transformers.
      The sad part about that is that I was extremely excited to play Transformers. I grew up in the 80’s and truly enjoyed both shows. I wanted to love them both! Hopefully, the upcoming expansions for Transformers (there’s a few coming out) will change my mind. There’s still fun to be had but I prefer G.I. Joe, for now.
      If my thoughts change after the expansions release, I’m sure I’ll make a video on it after I’ve played them. I’m glad you enjoyed Transformers. Hopefully I can enjoy it as much in the future.

      I ended up playing two-handed and it was my preferred method of playing. G.I. Joe works really well for 2 players. There’s going to be a lot of teamwork going on so there is rarely going to be downtime. Even when it’s the other players turn, you will still be very involved with assisting (a must to successfully complete missions). I think that is one of the biggest highlights of the game, the missions. Good thing is, you’re going to be going on a lot of missions.

    I think this already been asked but WHICH game do you think is a bit easier to PLAY. Not necessarily easier to win but which plays easier and is easier to follow, and learn; VENOM ASSAULT or GI JOE? (please respond only if you've played BOTH). I've only played VA but it was tough to learn, and it's not the easiest game to actually play. There's a lot of text on a lot of cards, each turn has multiple phases where you are going back & forth between your cards and the enemy cards (I deploy, they deploy, I activate, they activate, I attack, they attack... something like that).. and multiple "threats" on the board at once, to keep track of (and easy to miss). Overall good game, there's a special rule allowing you to boost your deck because the designer admitting the rampup for building your deck (using default rules is too slow). I use the expansion that allows 2-handed solo/coop players to help each other. It's just a LOOOOOONG game (depending on what scenario you choose I guess), and tricky to play. I'm HOPING GI Joe is a bit simpler, easier to play (although I hear the manual is terribly organized, its all learnable). I assume I'll need to consult boardgamegeek every few min as I try to learn it (as with most games these days that have crappy written rulebooks). Would like to hear your thoughts on comparing VA to GI Joe!

    • @SoloBoardGamingKnight
      @SoloBoardGamingKnight  2 роки тому

      G.I. Joe is very easy to keep track of. There’s the “At the start/end of turn” effects followed by the player going on missions and purchasing/upgrading cards. There are multiple threats that can arise but they are all clearly placed in front of the player. You can play “True Solo” but I prefer playing 2-handed (it makes going on missions a blast by using synergy and it’s really easy to keep track of). Each game takes roughly an hour or so but the game moves at a brisk pace. Personally, I found it easy to grasp, understand and play. I know you wanted a comparison but I think this may help answer some of your questions.

  • @DeinonychusA

    Initially I disagreed and thought Transformers was the better game. But this was when I was still struggling to learn the GI Joe game thanks to the ATROCIOUSLY ORGANIZED RULE BOOK. Despite watching several how-to-play videos, I still didn't get a good grasp on it until I basically copy-pasted the rules to a Word document and edited them down to something that made sense to me. Now I've played it 2-player and repeatedly on Solo and yes...it's a very tight, fun, and challenging game.
    Transformers is good too, but it's missing a little something and, as you stated and as I have stated elsewhere, the lack of Decepticon Bosses makes it feel a little shallow.
    The whole "not feeling like a Transformer" while playing thing isn't that apparent to me. I did, however, replace the cardboard movers that were included in the game with the Kre-O building figures of the respective characters. I'm thinking of replacing those with some Micromasters or Minicons so that I can actually transform my character when I flip the card and keep better track of what mode I'm in. I wonder how much cost it would add to the game for Renegade to include some rudimentary transforming game pieces.

      You actually remind me of me when you mentioned how you play Transformers. It seems that you enjoy immersing yourself in the experience and I am much the same way! Depending on what I’m playing, I even set ambiance sounds or a soundtrack in the background to help with immersion.
      When it comes to the actual game of Transformers, I agree, it is a fun game. However, it was disappointing to me (maybe my expectations were too high) but there are a lot of redeeming qualities. The lack of Decepticons is definitely a very big con but hopefully the future expansion will fix that. I do like the game enough to purchase its expansion when it releases. I just had to be honest with how I felt while playing the game.
      Also, the rulebook for G.I. Joe is atrocious! That could’ve easily ruined the game for me. Thankfully, I was able to make it through because the game itself is really fun! I love how the missions work in that game.
      Thank you for letting me know what you thought about your experiences. I would like to add one more thing. Growing up, there were many times that critics bashed on a game, only for me to play it and absolutely love it! The same has happened to me the other way around, as well. That taught me that no matter what, if a game calls my attention, I will try it for myself. I’ve found many gems that way.
      Sometimes, we will agree and other times, we will disagree. That’s one of the things that actually interests me about board games. With there being so many different genres, it’s fun to hear what others think then I play them myself and find out how I feel about it. So much fun no matter the outcome.
      Once again, thank you for your comment and if you have any games you’d like to suggest, by all means, let me know! I’d love to hear it! Take care.

      @@SoloBoardGamingKnight As far as ambiance goes, for the GI Joe game I put the Hasbro UA-cam channel on in the background. They've been streaming GI Joe episodes non-stop since June. When my Wife and I were playing last night, we were playing the MASS Device story missions while that 5-part story was coincidentally streaming. Some of the missions even synced-up with the action on-screen. That was a heck of an experience.

    On the component front I do think Transformers would have been better if they had included pawns for the alt modes as well or had some kind of transforming pawn. Even just playing solo with one pawn I kept having to double check my character card to see which mode my character was in let alone if I was playing competitive and wanted to see what mode my opponents were in. Not sure it would have added a lot to the cost.
    I think the physical quality of the cards in both games is average. I put mine in sleeves but they don't have the nice linen feel of games like Valley of the Kings for example. Agree that the card art is great in both games and overall I find the card design pretty easy to read.
    What would have been great but wasn't included (and I don't think they sell separately) would be a high quality game mat showing the card layouts.

    • @SoloBoardGamingKnight
      @SoloBoardGamingKnight  2 роки тому

      I agree. Most card-based games tend to have low quality cards. Every now and then, we get a board game with really good card stock. Usually, I sleeve my games. I do understand what you mean about the feel even after being sleeved. It’s expensive but it gives me a piece of mind. Especially when there is a lot of shuffling involved.
      Transformers really didn’t bring its theme to the game. It could’ve done a better job like the example you gave. Little things like that could’ve gone a long way to making the theme really stand out.
      The art, however, really does shine! I love the close-up look to them. Really well done in that department. You brought up a lot of good points, especially with the mats. This game really would’ve popped with a nice mat.

      No problem. Just wanted to point it out b/c that can make a big difference and I think would probably make the game much worse. While I do enjoy the co-op mode in Transformers, I do think G.I Joe does edge it out since it was designed around it (which was borrowed from the design of Venom Assault). So it has an inherent advantage for co-op. If you ever get a chance give the Team vs Team mode a try in Transformers. I played it with my nephew the other day, and we had a lot of fun with it. Much better and more thematic than the normal competitive mode I think.

      G.I Joe is better. Although I think there is probably more replayability in Venom Assault. I enjoyed Venom Assault, but I just think G.I Joe refined the formula and does it better, especially with how G.I Joe allows your teammates to join you on basically every mission with as many Joe's as you can fit in the vehicle. From what I remember, you need specific teamwork cards (like Legendary Alien/Predator) to help your partner out and those were only available in the expansion. The dice rolls seem a lot more fair in G.I Joe too.

      I’ve played Venom Assault, 2-handed solo with the expansion that allows players to help each other. Its cool but the game felt LONG (i played thru several of its scenarios). I also used a special rule that allows you to boost your deck early in the game because it starts out too slow. PLAYING the game is also tricky; there’s multiple phases or steps within each turn that makes to check enemy card stats/texts, then your cards, then check enemy cards again, then yours again, then roll. It was mind-fiddly imho. A lot of text on a lot of cards as well. I like the game but it felt too long and just tricky to play. So now I’m very interested in this GI Joe game because I heard it plays a little faster (and maybe slightly easier to follow) than Venom Assault. If people say it feels “refined” compared to Venom, then I’m sold. Venom is a keeper, I’d play it again someday but I think I want to take this GI Joe game for a spin. Less clunky, quicker, refined… I’m in!

      Not that I’m aware of. That would be awesome! It seems like there are going to be expansions allowing you to play as Decepticons for Transformers and Cobra for G.I. Joe. Other than that, the games seem to be too different, as well as the cards, to mix unless an expansion changes that in the future. Let’s hope!

      You can combine both the transformer core sets for a head to head game b/w Decepticons and Autobots where you try to take out each other's robots and bosses, while assisting and trying to defend your own bosses. But there is no mixing across the franchises. The games are far too different.

    I'd have to disagree. I've played both and I think Transformers nailed it on theme and G.I. Joe missed it. When I play Transformers Deck Building game, I feel like a Transformer. And combat system is sooooo much better in Transformers than G.I. Joe. And the mitigation of the dice rolls is minimal at best. So you are much more stuck with luck in G.I. Joe then Transformers.
    You are so wrong on your review of these games. Sooooo wrong.

      @@SoloBoardGamingKnight most of the dice roll mitigation is lacking for me in GI Joe. When I want mitigation, I want reliable mitigation such as "add x number of successes/hit to your roll" not add more dice. Another die is still hampered by the luck of the roll and most of the game's mitigation is adding dice, not solid mitigation like I just outlined. If they had more of that, I'd be fine with the dice rolls.
      And to correct you on Transformers, if you're injured in co-operative, it has no effect on if you can fight or not.
      That's only in competitive mode, and even in competitive mode, you don't have to have an assist to fight when damaged...you just have to accept an assist if another player assists.

      If you watch the end part of my video, I do mention that there is fun to be had in Transformers. It just missed the mark for me. I was really hyped to play it! If you’ve ever played DC Deck-Building Game: ReBirth, it is very similar to Transformers. Personally, I think DC did some things better and Transformers did other things better. I liked the art in Transformers a lot more but they both look good. If you enjoyed Transformers, you should consider looking into the DC game.

      The reason why there aren't many "add x number of successes/hit to your roll" (although I think I encountered a few) is because the dice in this game are already at a 50% chance of success with one side having a double hit. Contrast this with a game like Venom Assault where it's extremely punishing where you're basically never winning any fights until the late game b/c you're constantly having to roll 5's or higher with no chance of a double hit. Not only that, but the Venom cards in that game are much more punishing than the complication cards in G.I Joe, which can be frustrating when you go into a mission thinking you're going to nail it only to have all your dice stripped away and the boss armor/hp go through the roof. G.I Joe really nails the balance here, better than I've seen in any other game with dice.

    • @pietrorasputin52

      @@SeanUCF A fifty fifty shot is still random as hell. They needed to have one more side of the dice a success, or put more hard midigation to the rolls in the game.
      50/50 is way too random for fun, and it's nothing but frustrating because you can go in literally having 9 dice and roll 2 successes and there's nothing you can freaking do about it!
