@@Johnny-rx4hs I really enjoy The Orville but I feel like the tone is still so different from Star Trek. Like from a comedic perspective, I think older Star Trek was often hilarious but more from serious characters and cultural clashes like a cranky Worf or Data going on a date or Spock confused about the illogical nature of humans. Whereas in Orville, it is like John humping a statue or Ed having sex with the blue squirting guy who cheated with his ex-wife. I still really enjoy the show and far more than STD or Picard, but still doesn't quite hit the Star Trek spot for me.

@@darkengine5931 they've done all those too. Usually Issac or Bortus. The humour is being used to soften the blow of obvious agenda. Few if anyone even noticed that the entire crew didn't even think twice that suddenly Edd was playing for the other team. It was just normal. No one cared. The Blue ooze at the end just hides the message in humour. But subconsciously you still saw a society that was 100% fine with whatever word we invent in the future to describe human alien male male relationships.

As far as Kurtzman and his goons are concerned, Gene's vision of Star Trek is dead. We're living in J.J. Abrams' Hell-verse, and they're making sure that all of Trek is bound to it now.

@@jamesforbes5616 Berman's issue was that he could be a bit too heavy handed at trying to "gaurd it" see season 1 Enterprise and most of Voyager (and Ronald D Moore's remarks about joining Voyager's writing crew post DS9). But he still understood what he was guarding. i will say if there is Star Trek in ten or twenty years I think it will be better now because we now see that having a guard even an overzalous one in charge of a show is far preferable to someone who has no experience and has no fidelity to the vision of Star Trek.

The history of Star Trek is a history of debates. Who is the better captain, Kirk or Janeway? Is the Dominion War arc too overpowering, too dark? Is Captain Picard too given to philosophical speculation to be effective? Is Commander Sisko too obsessed with the Pa-wraiths to function properly?
Each time a new series with a new setting and new characters has been introduced, there has been resistance followed by acceotance, and the fans have stayed.
But there was a reason that they stayed. From series to series, the ethos of Star Trek remained. The feel of Star Trek remained. The question was always of acceptance of new characters and a new setting WITHIN STAR TREK.
That is what has changed. It is not merely a question of what timeline Discovery and Picard are in -- the disaster that is JunkTrek is not within the Star Trek ethos, not within the scope of anyone's understanding of what Star Trek is.
The JunkTrek now being churned out in Canada fails not only as Trek, but in basic terms of writing, acting, continuity, and cohesion. It is garbage even taken as generic sci-fi.
It is chaotic and incoherent, sadistic and ugly. It takes beloved characters from previous series -- Spock, Icheb -- and destroys them.
Fans are not being asked this time to accept a new set of characters and a new setting -- it is demanded of us that we reject Star Trek itself and accept a completely different program in its place. This the fans will not do.
The viewership ratings for JunkTrek are so abysmal because it has driven away existing fans and very few new fans have arrived to take our place.
No one who has watched an episode of JunkTrek will ever want to see that episode again. Imagine settling down to enjoy again that wonderful moment when Icheb's eye is gouged out.
Yet all over the world, TOS, TNG, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager are watched and loved. People play individual episodes over and over the way they play fine music.
This is nothing like the arrival of previous new series. The makers of this dystopian trash have produced something the fanbase will never accept.

That is truth right there, I have felt dirty after every of the few STD and 1st season Picard episodes I watched. Contrary I rewatch especially the Data centered shows of TNG and also DS9's The Way of the Warrior, because Worf is just such a badass coming in, having bar fights, doing intelligence work by getting hammered, blowing up spaceships and switching to hand to hand combat in ops while flirting with Jadzia. He did all of that BEFORE he eventually regained his confidence and deciding to stay in starfleet - which was what the story here was actually about and all the explosions where in the end just eye candy and not the means to itself.

Absolutely one hundred percent spot on.
A new show post dominion war with new alliances and new threats. Treachery and intrigue abound, can former foes reconcile their differences, do the founders really want peace or is it a ploy ? And what's this signal picked up from the beta quadrant, who is this new hostile species and will it force friends and foe alike to band together to save the galaxy ?
But no Kurtzman just wants to destroy, destroy, desstroy. Like Davros from Dr Who, a different show I know but that's Kurtzman for you.

I've gotten used to Hollywood trampling over my childhood by making horrid remakes/prequels/sequels of my beloved films like Total Recall, Robocop, Jacob's Ladder... But somehow STD upsets me much more than usual. I'm not entirely sure why. I think a lot of it has to do with Kit Cat's brilliantly-stated reasons, but also because STD seems to have developed some sort of bizarre and rabid fanbase that will call me racist or sexist or something (very serious things to accuse someone of being as opposed to just the juvenile "stupid") for disliking it. I am from Japan so I am not so experienced with what people are calling "SJW" and things like this, but I am starting to get a firsthand experience just expressing my dislike for this series. I used to think not only Star Trek crew members were idealistic human beings who seemed so emotionally mature and ethical, but that the fans would be more educated and civil and mature than the average variety. STD disappoints me both ways.

It is too bad. And I think a large part of the hesitation from part of the old cast - Spiner and Sitis - was borne out of underatanding that this is not what they had built. Even Sir Stewart thiught about it for a bit too much. I just wish that in the end they would have said no. I don't think I can give STP another shot after he bad season 1 was. Even if they change it for the better, the journey there is getting hard to watch, and considering it is serialized, it makes it worse.
I just re-read Immortal Coil, Cold Equations and Light Fantastic. COLD Equations is a better continuity product than STP. NuTrek can die for all I care, but I still have the OG stuff.

Ken Stott from the Hobbit films said he was almost blacklisted from the industry because he publicly complained about not getting an invite to the premiere. Other writers worked on Trek. It appears that there was a unique creative atmosphere created by Berman attempting to restrain the writers to being respectful of "Gene's vision" while those other writers, naturally, wanted to explore the darker side. TNG era Trek walked that tightrope and it seems to me that both camps had valid ideas and reasons and the shows that resulted from this creative tension benefitted greatly from this editorial process.

He is weak, neurotic, and whiney. He is dyslexic. The obnoxious Burnham character has "molded" and "shaped" him into a different person, for which he expresses deepest gratitude and devotion to her. 🤮
No one who loves Spock should go anywhere near Strange New Worlds -- even apart from what they do to Kirk.
And Strange New Worlds will be worse than Discovery because, having already trashed Spock, they will now most certainly go after Kirk.
The ridiculous characters in Discovery 3 are people we don't care about. Kirk and Spock are people we love.
