Thank you for the advance word. I love my 817 for the field, and similarly love my 710 in the shack. Having a new field radio that combines the two is very exciting. The dual-receive feature makes it all the more useful. 90% sure I'll be getting one.
If you have any contacts with Yaesu, tell them they need to make a docking station for it for home use that contains a 100w amp, ATU and PSU. Then you have a true all-in-one radio for home, car or field!
@@watersstanton Yeah, but it would stimulate the 2nd hand market as I could get rid of my FT-710, FT-891, FT-2980r, Xeigu X6100 and the cheap Anytone I have in the car and just have the 1 set if I wanted. So it would actually work out cheaper than buying that lot from scratch!
I have been considering migrating from the IC-7300 to the FT-710, but like the menu similarity between the 7300 and 705. Yaesu is now offering me a way to spend dollars cubed to keep the menu similarity. I am typically not an early adopter so I will wait a while and see how this turns out. I am seeing a benefit of the FT-710 over the IC-7300, but not a huge benefit. I will wait to see how the FTX-1F compares to the IC-705.
It’s not April 1st, so it must be true! Very exciting radio, had so many 817’s over the last 20 years … Icom’s 705 is nice too, was always protective taking such an expensive radio out portable. I hope this new Yaesu prices in under the 705 and I’m sure it will be a hit! Need to figure out which radios I should move on - 991a, 817nd or 710. It seems to replace at least one of those. Thank you Yaesu for the innovation & Peter for the great updates & videos 🎉
Thank you Peter for this inspiring news. One of my recent regrets was not buying an FT-818 before they were discontinued, in spite of the age of the design. It looks like Yaesu has not abandoned the "shack in a box" product line. I just hope the form factor is similar to the 818. Don't like the form factor of the IC-705. Cheers. VE3IMF
Peter - am going to guess that both speakers are on the bottom - not, like the FT-817/8 - on the top. With those vent things to direct the audio to the front panel. The front facing speaker should be an improvement for handbag-style pedestrian mobile operation (which the IC-705's shape seems less suited to - and I'm not a fan of holding the whole thing and antenna in one hand walkie-talkie style). What isn't so good is that the new Yaesu lacks a front panel antenna connector. While I never endorse a BNC carrying significant weight, it was still useful to directly attach an antenna coupler to for wire type pedestrian mobile antennas on backpack mounted fishing rods etc.
Already have this in one form or another. It was a poorly kept secret that Yaesu were releasing something new… I guess I’d hoped for a QRO version with 23cms, is all. Will still purchase though… can’t help it… what else is a Yaesu fan-boy gunna do?
It will be interesting to see how close it is to the FT-710 from an operations and menu structure standpoint. That is the real advantage of the IC-7300, the IC-705, and to some extent , the IC-7100. If you know one, you can figure out the rest pretty quickly.
Thank you for the update. Must say I am a little disappointed. I hoped for a 80m-70cm 100w all mode radio of about 2,5 kg or les. Hope to live to see that day. Why don't they make them like that no more I wonder?
I think where both Yaesu and Icom have dropped the ball with their respective units is that there is no base station docking unit that adds 100 watt PA and antenna tuner with the added benefit of having the docking port detach for dash mounting in the car connected to the PA/antenna tuner unit via remote mounting cable. That way you could use one radio for all your operating needs.
looks a bit similar to the ftm500 eh ? Shame it's not got an built in atu, but then why compete against your own 991a ? Sounds similar to the 897, shack in a box. Will be interesting to see if any more info comes up by Hamfest. Thanks for the video !
Add 100 watts HF and 50 watts VHF/UHF and Yaesu would have a sweet FT-991/991A replacement. I'd snag one in a heartbeat. I love my 991, but it's in need of more than a facelift. Please Yaesu. Make this the new "991."
Like all new radios, no 1.25m, no built tuner, not 25watts, no capacitive touch screen, and much more. Which Yaesu would listen to their customers. If POTA is the future of our hobby, create something that is portable and/or mobile. Perhaps, we should have a mindset that this is the replacement of the ft-818.
@@paulleach1164 the 991 is a GREAT radio, and will be for years to come, especially for the price. The FTX-1F is only 10 watt vs the 991 having 100 watt, but I imagine sometime in a couple years they would do similar updates to the 991. It’s always a waiting game and that means not having fun in the meantime with a still excellent radio :-)
I thought I would buy the device but when I told the preliminary price I had to say no because the price is far from the 817 ND is more than the price of the ICOM IC 705 hope that doesn't happen because then the FT 710 for POTA will come sooner
@@watersstanton I had a conversation with a certain person who has something to do with the matter, and he also said that the IC 7760 will be very expensive, around €5000. But let's wait and see, because in the end it will say something different again!
@paulsengupta971 I was hopeful for their anniversary that they'd update their 7300 ( like a pro model or anniversary edition) I don't mind flagship rigs but I could never afford something like that. Something for the everyday ham. I'm still running a ic-746 pro and an ic-7000.
If it is in the same price bracket as icom 705 I will not be buying one. I paid £345 for a new 817nd and that is where the price needs to be for portable use. Over 1K and would be scared to take it out.
I'm guessing it'll be a little bit cheaper, since the 991 is currently in similar bracket to the 705 - and this new radio has to be cheaper than a 991 I'm guessing. Maybe with the extra fan and ATU it'll be more. They made the 710 better and cheaper than the 7300. Maybe they'll make this radio better and cheaper than the 705.
I’ll keep my Xiegu G90. That’s all we need, another worthless QRP rig for POTA and SOTA that can’t put out 120 watts. I’m willing to bet Xiegu will have one before any US based Ham radio manufacturers will. I’ll keep saving my pennies for 120 watt POTA/SOTA rig before I spent my lifesavings for another worthless QRP rig! 😢🤬 To Yaesu, Icom and Kenwood-Stop wasting our time and money! 🤬
I just paid $35 to “pre order” this radio from DX Engineering here in USA. Hope to live long enough to get it in my hands. 😊
Thank you for the update. That's a beautiful radio and I am overdo for a new radio. 😉

More of a QRP FT897 replacement.
@@watersstantonI suspect it will be anyway. Probably more expensive than the FT-991a.
@@adamap2796 or an ft-818 replacement
Most interesting. Will be watching for it. Thank you for the heads up.
You are very welcome.
Thank you Peter, very exciting!
Thanks for the info I’m looking forward to seeing it
Hi , great to see a replacement for ft817-8 looks great Pete . Regards mark G8rde
Many thanks!
Thanks for preview Peter. It will be very interesting to see what is released.
You and me both!
I pre-ordered one, they got me.
Cool stuff Peter! Thanks
I like it! Seems they've thought of pretty much everything!
I've just bought a FT-710 and a FTM500 so of course they have.
Ouch
Only 6-10 watts thou

I'm guessing the speakers are below with the sound exiting from the funnels under the front panel?
Wow, that could be amazing.
Just bought a Ft 817 at the flea market for 60 dollars and yes it works had to order a cable and battery
Damn it! I just bought a ft891 for a portable!1

so many questions... Will it work with the ATAS antenna? Which only covers up to 40m. Will Yaesu introduce a new ATAS? Super exciting!
Looks like I’ve got some saving up to do. However I wonder if the bolt on cooling fan and atu can be used at the same time
Yes.
They are taking on the overpriced IC-705. I hope it is reasonably priced.

No mention of 70MHz/4M..??

Agreed.
Model number sounds like a handheld number. Why not FT917. More in keeping with the range.
Is there any ever logic to model codes?
Oh boy! another 6 watt radio!
Any 4m????
It would appear not although they may have a slightly different EU spec. So could happen.
FT 710A will be next.
Any word on 140 meters?
just checking to see whether it's 1st April... Seriously though... sounds very interesting Peter.. about time they replaced the 817/8...
If only my house was finished. Though i want a base style of the same features, with dual recieve..like i had with my 101e
