  • This is our entire crew's favorite car of SEMA 2018: Riley Stair's WIDE and LOW (yeah, all caps) 1970 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. But what's even better about the ridiculously good looking bodywork and batshit N/A motor, is the fact that Riley built and fabricated this thing himself in his parent's outdoor garage bay. Major props.

    If you watched this video in its entirety it is a perfect example as to why high schools need to bring back metal shop and woodshop. Humans were created to build stuff. Whether you are into cars or not the metal work is pure poetry here. We should all have such a skill to build, to improve, to create.

      He also sold his truck and trailer to fund the finishing of it, which is the part most people are not willing to do. If you want this type of work done you pay for it, and that's why pro shops don't put out cars like this. You don't get the $100,000 job if your budget is $400.

      As did I. If I ever got in trouble, my dad would lay out a plastic bed liner from his GMC Sierra he had around after he had a liner sprayed in and I would have to fill the liner up with dirt. After I was finished, I would have to fill the hole in. I had to do that all before I went to school, so there were plenty of extremely early mornings. I didn't like disappointing my parents but I didn't mind the work because it made my arms strong which helped since I raced BMX. Could be one of the reasons I beat everyone in my age class at the 2004 Grand Nationals. I was the only person in my class that could carry enough speed to jump the massive double that brought you into the first turn. Having enough upper body strength to pull for a jump that large was the reason I shut down and rolled the last straight's rhythm section in the main and still stayed out in front. Almost everyone's front rim had cross laced spokes for extra strength but I was one of a small group who ran straight laced spokes on the front rim. Running titanium spokes instead of the normal stainless steel helped keep the strength and helped keep the rim true. I also ran carbon fiber forks and it would have been a nasty sight had I ever front nose cased anything which I watched happen plenty of times.

Hearing that he wasn't mad but disappointed would make me feel so small. He also did so much for me that I don't think I could show him how much I appreciated it all or pay him back in this lifetime. A couple of years ago he had to have open heart surgery and I only visited him in the hospital once. I couldn't bring myself to see someone I think of as indestructible in the state he was in after surgery. If something like that was to ever happen again, I'd visit him as much as I could even if it broke me down into tears. I don't think Father's realize how important they are in their child's eye even if they had a Father present in their life when they were younger. They are half of the world to their children.

      A motivated kid with a very wealthy mommy and daddy.
      I agree with Doug it's mostly show. That engine with a 10k redline on the track wont last much more than a few heat ups and cool off before the block is warped from the crazy piston speeds. A real track car would have moved oil scavenging tanks inside the wheelbase

    • @davidmurphy1207
      @davidmurphy1207 5 років тому +2

      Way more show than go. The other comments are correct. It'll tear itself apart or warp in no time. There is a reason all the other cars on the track are not built like this. It's because it's not a good design for function. Oh well the engine bay looks interesting.

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 5 років тому +1

      In the video around 10:10 he says it's a Dart LS next block, those will only support a bore of 4.220 iron, he also said it displaced 400ci, so we know more or less what the stroke is 3.56" more if it's aluminum block. That is not a short stroke.
      At 10k that's a piston speed ~6000fpm, that is way too fast for anything besides being a dyno queen. Every NASCAR team running about 5100fpm piston speed, ruins a block every race from piston wall warping due to heat.
      The max piston speed to retain respectable reliability is around 4700fpm or a stroke of no more than 2.85" at 10k. @Keith Peterson

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 5 років тому +2

      I don't need to know the stroke length, he said the engine displaced 400 ci in the video, I know the max bore size the block will take so it's not hard to figure out what the shortest stroke he could have used to achieve 400ci, math yo. Rod length which can also be determined easily isn't relevant to the piston speed issue I pointed out. There is no metallic cylinder sleeve material that can handle that kind of heat for any length of time. Even F1 when they revved to 18k only had piston speeds around 5000fpm.
      Also nearly all those engine shops build dyno queen engines, many of those build legit race engines as well. This engine would be fine at those revs for drag racing but not for track use where it would it would stay between 8-10k most of the time.
