Mi viene da ridere..........per l'emozione che provo nel sentire gli applausi ancor prima che finisca il brano e per il fatto che il direttore abbia dovuto interrompere la musica per far finire al pubblico di applaudire Del Monaco. Dove si sentono più artisti così!!!!!!! Questo è Mario Del Monaco. Questa era la vera lirica.
Bravo! Quanno ce vole ce vo'. L'Opera non prevede pause per gli applausi. L'applauso non è gradito dal direttore d'orchestra ignorante ed invidioso. Il pubblico che non conosce l'Opera teme di fare una gaffe e di essere zittito se applaude fuori tempo e spesso succede anche che una buona esecuzione passi senza applausi. Ma dopo una esecuzione così chisse ne frega della fine della musica. Del Monaco sarà stato contento e ricaricato per proseguire bene. I cantanti cantano per soldi, d'accordo, ma il riconoscimento del pubblico vale molto di più...

Qui il DIVINO raggiunse la perfezione vocale che aveva sempre desiderato...qui egli è melocchiano con quella perfezione appunto delmonachiana che lo rese perfetto...quando di delmonachiano non è unadulazione all'artista o per chi come me lo ha sempre seguito come esempio bensì una sua mescolanza di tecnica che enfatizza e mettere in risalto gli armonici a pieno e di conseguenza riesce a dare piani e forti e persino mezzevoci che ne fecero l'interprete perfetto di questo repertorio.
I knew a gentleman, way back when, who sang in the San Francisco Opera chorus in the early 50's. He told me about a performance of Andrea Chenier with Del Monaco. He recalled the audience going nearly berserk after this aria. Several of the chorus members thought the balcony would collapse from the audience jumping up and down in a frenzy.
Dio santo, che immensità. Un uragano. Pensate che la Callas non riusciva a proseguire per il fragoroso e lungo applauso. Antonino Votto, il direttore, sospese per un po'. Signori, questa è la vera lirica. Mostri sacri irraggiungibili oggi.
Perchè questa voce stupenda,meravigliosa non viene più fatta ascoltare al grande pubblico? Le registrazioni ci sono ed anche i filmati. Ne abbiamo abbastanza di farci turlupinare le orecchie e la mente da pagliacci come Bocelli ed affini. Riascoltiamo la GRANDE lirica

Yo creo hoy muy pocos son capaces de someterse al sacrificio, las privaciones y sobre todo estar dispuestos a tolerar los contratiempos que implica llevar adelante una labor como la del gran Mario, y desde esa perspectiva, coincido con lo que dijo Massimo, hoy en día no resulta un negocio demasiado lucrativo.
Por supuesto, tampoco debemos olvidarnos que esta clase de MONSTRUOS no nacen todos los días. Saludos

To make the La Scala from Milan to applaud you in that period of time for this long not letting the soprano sing her part this is what this man did in his time in his era the one and only great MDM in his prime.
There has been no one like him. Period end of story.
The squillo on the last high note....spine tingling! And he keeps the masculinity/power of character all the way to end, he does not die after the high note. World Class!!

I saw and heard Del Monaco live in Otello at the old Metropolitan Opera in NYC in 1957 or 1958. Tebaldi sang Desdemona and Leonard Warren sang Iago. Del Monaco was incredible! Recordings do not do him justice. It was necessary to hear him live to appreciate the power and color in his voice. The aria, Dio Mi Potevi, was elecric!
You were very lucky to hear and see them all... Del Monaco the best Otello, Tebaldi the best Desdemona and Leonard Warren the best Iago...

for me this aria has never been sung better corelli is excellent but mario tops him for sheer excitement and acting ability even if he was over the top from time to time but for me it just made him more endearing to his public

Mr. Kaufmann, in any case, is the CLOSEST voice to Corelli and MDM that we're likely to encounter in the foreseeable years.
It's good that all of them can be enjoyed now, on You Tube and other venues.
@@davegreene8588 …the vocal potential of Mr. Kaufmann has been never close, but far behind those two icons of the Golden Era. It has always been a vocal issue. His advantage however is indisputable, Mr. Kaufmann is alive and sings some of the roles MDM and FC did. Quite a few he is already no longer able to perform on stage. My last attempts for actual judgments ended before the end. His „Dichterliebe“, his „Parsifal“, excerpts from „Walküre“, dreadful. Whispering, non supported Piani, squeezed upper registers, also according to critics.
Mr. Kaufmann is now in his 50s and may realize a unwise role selection and a following voice already well over the top. I do remember him as a young and promising tenor. Today he is neither nor.
My teachers never introduced Mr. Kaufmann to me as an example of vocal production.
I am aware that many people are fond of Mr. Kaufmann s singing. I do respect that.

@@mk5244 kaufman is nowhere near the class,or does he possess the brilliant voice of either mr.d.el monaco or mr. Corelli.kaufman is all throaty and muffled,sounds like he has a constant head cold,he may have been good once upon a time,but sadly he no longer is.

Bisogna aggiungerne un altra che pochi nominano. Manon Lescaut. Fu per questo che Corelli non la volle mai cantare. Considerò le esecuzioni di Mario, la perfezione assoluta irraggiungibile.
E oltre a Manon di Puccini, aggiungerei Sansone e Fanciulla.

Del Monaco, Corelli, Tucker and Di Stefano were perhaps the last bridge of greatness from the old school of singing. They were followed by Carreras Pav and Domingo, which were excellent, but were never as intense. We were still fortunate to have them as well.
Del Monaco is my favorite tenor, but this doesn't mean I prefer him in every role. However, I think he was remarkable. The audience here understands what they are hearing.
Tucker and Di Stefano were excellent but Pavarotti was in a superior league. Domingo often sounded strangled and Carreras struggled at singing throughout his career.
Alan Rodrigues Prime Pavarotti is at most equal, and possibly worse, than prime DiStefano

Il mio più grande rammarico e di essere nato nel 1949 e quindi non avere avuto l'occasione di assistere ad una sua recita in teatro.....ho cercato di bilanciare con i dischi.....ma immagino l'emozione indescrivibile che ha provato chi ha avuto questo privilegio.Grande, grandissimo, unico !!!!.....

Listen Closely fans, there is no evidence that we will ever hear anything of this caliber again. MDM died in 1982 over a generation ago.

You must be kidding. Do you actually know what belcanto stands for? NOT for verismo. And what we get here isn't much 'canto' either, 'bel' or otherwise. It's declamation in forte or fortissimo for 90% of the time.

Del Monaco's singing here is extremely idiomatic, passionate and perfect in every sense both vocally wise and in terms of interpretation. Of course there is a huge difference between Bellini and Donizetti's -Del Monaco was never famous for those roles and he admitted himself that his voice wasn't best suited to them (early in his career they tried to force him into very light repertoire) - and Puccini or Giordano but I think the term bel canto itself has become so inaccurate that saying Mario Del Monaco truly represented bel canto is not a mistake. @Michele Z The term bel canto has indeed become inaccurate, but it had never included verismo; the 'scholarly' debate is only about whether it should include the Romantic Ottocento or stop at pre-Romantics such as Rossini. Andrea Chenier is pure verismo, and the Improvviso has a sizeable middle part consisting of dramatic declamation. What I hear is forte/fortissimo, do you hear mezza voce? I can't see what's so 'shocking' or inaccurate about my first comment (which btw was more about the incorrect use of the term 'bel canto' than about MdM's rendition of this piece) - this is a verismo piece, not bel canto, the bulk of it is declamation, lyrical singing ('canto') and declamation aren't synonyms, and the delivery is done in forte/fortissimo.

Jonas Kaufman è il più famoso tenore tedesco del momento, conosciuto per i suoi toni molto scuri, quasi da baritono..l'opinione pubblica è equalmente divisa, tra chi a qui non piace affatto la sua tecnica gutturale e scura, e chi giura che è trà i più grandi tenori dei nostri tempi..A me personalmente non piace tanto..Trovo la sua voce ingolata, e senza coloratura, e che di proposito prova a cantare drammatico quando in effetti è tuttalpiù un tenore spinto..Spero d'esserti stato d'aiuto..Ciao

La voce vera (di tenore lirico) è inesistente ed invece ci dimostra una vocetta artificiale, ingolata e bruttissima di un tenore "drammatico" (senza nessun colore e forza della voce). La gente pensa che sia un tenore drammatico perché non hanno mai ascoltato i tenori tipo Del Monaco, Corelli, nemmeno Giacomini. Ha una vocetta piccolissima e priva di bellezza e senza il microfono è inudibile.

Nel 1955, a 40 anni, Del Monaco era al culmine del suo smalto vocale. Già 10 anni dopo si notavano segni di inevitabile declino.
I would add that perhaps his true peak was a couple of years later, around the time of his Met Samsons. But only a dedicated follower who saw him through the years would know for certain. The decline began in the early 1960s when he began singing with a higher placement. IMHO of course. Cheers!
