My slouch hat is Actually a Hardee that has seen much love and life in the field. It was either a bender or dirty Billy, I cannot remember which.

unrelated to the actual topic, but what hat is that you're wearing in this vid? My beehive slouch is a little too big for me and that one looks great!
It is a variant of a plug hat I had custom-made by Tim Bender before he retired. It is based on multiple examples that I see in the photos from men of the Third Corps of the army of the Potomac.

Absolutely! Many recipes in soldier “cookbooks” can be found for rice. Jeremy
The Carolinas grew a lot of rice in the colonial period. I have several 18th and 19th century cookbooks, and they have numerous recipes using rice.
Beaguins thank you, I had no idea any rice was grown in the U.S. That will make my reenacting easier.
Very common, don’t remember where but I read somewhere that soldiers grew so tried of it they never had it after the war

@@CivilWarDigitalDigest I've considered myself an "outdoorsman" for 40 years. But only recently, (past 5-6 years) did I gain an interest in foraging. Mostly because of videos like this. Now, I see that kinda stuff everywhere! Lol!
Plus, it also takes away alot of downtime when we're out camping. "OK kids. Let's go find dinner!" Lol!

its too bad so many soldiers didnt know what wild edibles were growing around them. it would have been a great addition to their diets
It’s not accurate to say they didn’t. They very well did. We know of men picking blackberries, others digging sassafras root for tea, and others existing on wild onions when rations didn’t arrive. The last two are CS examples. They did know and use.
At 150th Shiloh we were making a stew and found wild onions we added. Very tasty.

Seeing the outcome would have been nice. Otherwise what’s the point it be like explaining about a peace of art but then just saying ok bye.
I feel the same way , it would be nice to see the end result in detail so we can get a better understanding of what is cooking and the way it is supposed to look like ie texture ,color, and so forth.
