I just got into woodworking and only use plywood since I don’t know what I’m doing and don’t want to waste money on “good wood”. I’ve seen other videos where people use edge banding but no one ever explains anything about it. This video is awesome! Now I know what to buy and exactly how to use it! Thanks so much for sharing your expertise. You have a new subscriber!
*Thank You!* I could not figure out how to properly use the double sided trimming tool (the end trimmer was just so simple to use by comparison). Now I have a place to start and I appreciate your video and instructions very much. Thank you again. 👍👍
I've just got the double sided cutter from Temu (£6.27) but as usual it didn't come with any instructions so this video was very useful. Thanks very much
Hey man thanks so much for explaining this.. I’m building a computer desk and I have just finally built my first round edge jig.. took a few try’s.. next I want to edge ban everything and then I should be good. Was confused with this stuff but thanks.
Thank you sir! Just made a 3” mdf work bench. Unfortunately I only have a hodge podge which includes a 6” pony vise which I have to figure out how to attach so I can plan some dog holes. It should be....interesting lol
what if you're working on a project to to wide to use the double sided trimmer, what do you use then since the single edge trimmer doesn't come out as clean?
This is one of the best videos on this process, for sure. New to this and already installed some on the particle board I’m working with and although I like it the job could’ve been better. This explained everything I goofed on and is definitely gonna help me out a lot. Thanks!
Hi..l like ur presentation...it was very simple to understand..u made it sound so easy...l would like to ask u few questions ...other than the aesthetics ...why do we need to edge band? Does it make the plywood last longer ? Does it prevent water entering the plywood core ? Is it necessary to edge band the sides that we don't see? Please do enlighten me. Thanks in advance.
Edge banding is used both to protect and finish off the edge of the raw plywood. I wouldn't say it makes the plywood last long, but does prevent contaminants like water/moisture from entering. In general I do not finish the edges that are not visible. Bottom line, it's done mostly for aesthetic. Hope that helps.
Hi - I have a question. Di you say that its best to veneer the side of the board first and then apply the veneer edge so there is no gaps in the seams at the edge?
Nice demonstration. One question. How do you trim the banding when you are working on plywood that is already installed. I have cabinets I am redoing and the fronts of the shelves need banding. I can't start at an edge because there are vertical pieces of wood in the way.
Great question! I use a straight blade (or utility blade) and hold it flush with the top or bottom of the shelf to cut the excess material off closest to where the shelf intersects the side of the cabinet. I cut just enough material off to get my trimmer in there to finish trimming the remaining material. After that I use some fine sandpaper to polish the edges. Hope that make sense, if not hit me up on IG where we can chat and share pictures.
Thanks for the video! Really easy to understand. 👍 one question, does the dual edge trimmer work on 2mm edge banding? Some of my projects require 1 and 2mm. just need to know if it works for both thickness.
I've never cut 2mm banding with mine. However, I just measured the cutter and it looks like it can handle 2mm (that is really close to the max). Just double check before you buy the trimmer of your choice
Awesome video! Tips here that I will definitely use (sides first) as I'm building a desk topped with 3/4" Birch plywood. I knew enough to buy the banding, but was a bit unsure about the best application. Question: if I bevel the edge by 15 degrees to match the legs, will edge banding be more difficult to apply?
My issue with the purpose-made edge banding irons is that they are stupidly expensive. It's just a heating element with a handle. Why so pricey? You can buy a brand new clothing iron for as little as 1/4 the price - Amazon has one for 14 bucks, for instance. I was fortunate in that I already own a heat gun for electronics. That worked fine. I just worked in 6 or 7 inch sections and followed up immediately with a roller. My project was a little different from yours. It was a 28-inch square base for a turntable. I radiused the corners, so I didn't have a sharp corner to start from. I just started in the middle of the back edge and went clear around the entire panel. Used nearly 10 feet of birch edge banding. When I got back to the starting point, before heating the ends, I overlapped them and trimmed both ends at the same time with a mallet thump on my 1-inch chisel. A little TimberMate filled the tiny gap. I'm really happy with how it came out, especially since I'm a newbie woodworker. I guess since I was looking for an edge banding iron via Google, they added this video to my recommendations. A day late unfortunately. But I still enjoyed it. Thanks for all your informative content.
Great question! I would do this after you have done your main sanding. You will then want to follow up after you have edged it with a fine 220 grit to clean everthing up.
This is one of the quickest, most thorough videos I have ever watched. Well done!

Hi, does the banding have to colour match the wood if I’m planning on staining it all?
Thanks
Great video: informative and to the point!!
Massive thanks for making this video sir! It help us a lot. Keep safe always!.....

perfect video demo👍🙏
Thanks for the visit
I have the squeezee type of trimmer, but never knew it has bevel adjustments. Thanks.
You could use a router bit flush cut. But better is a regular file to take care of the overhand and bevel.
Brilliant explained
Glad you liked it.
For the blue edge banding trimmer, can you adjust the width?
Yes
awesome video
Who is must required in wodworking, bosch GSR or bosch GSB?
very good video,well done
Thank you! Cheers!
Can that blue trimmer cut 2 inch band?
Great as always
Thanks buddy! Send more pictures my way if you want... I really enjoyed seeing what you did and the tools you used!

Very cool man!! Exciting!
Great video! Thanks!
Thanks..
Can we stain/varnish/lacquer on the edge band after "installing" it?
Absolutely!
Can you edge band on corners that are round?
Yes
what if you're working on a project to to wide to use the double sided trimmer, what do you use then since the single edge trimmer doesn't come out as clean?
Hey Paul. I would use a single sided trimmer (or take the double sided one apart and use half of it) and then use a little sandpaper to clean it up.
When building drawers out of plywood, how do you do the 90 degree corners (looking down at the top of the drawer? Thanks
I do the front and the back first, and then the sides. They end up looking like a stile and rail door, if that makes sense?
@@TrainingHandsAcademy Thank you for the response, good idea!

Wow..that how they do it...yeah...thank u sir
Please how can get one of the edge trimmers?
I am in Ghana
Josh. Do you have any experience with this edge banding on particle board edges?
I've used it on melamine plywood which has a particle board core. I don't think it would work good on just regular particle board.
@@TrainingHandsAcademy Tks!
I haven’t had good luck with the dual sided edge trimmer. 😩

Found the spring trimmer would not cut. I ended up using a sharp chisel instead. Filing is another good option.
Hi - I have a question. Di you say that its best to veneer the side of the board first and then apply the veneer edge so there is no gaps in the seams at the edge?
Yes, sides first, and then the face (the side you will see most).
Can I use the blue edge trimmer for a 1/2 inch wood
Not sure... I'd double check with the manufacturer. My guess though would be yes.

@@TrainingHandsAcademy Thanks for the reply. I'll give it a try.
I never tried glue on edge banding. I have glued solid wood to plywood to hide the edge. Thanks for the video.
Fine grit sandpaper means howmuch grit?
220 and above
@@TrainingHandsAcademy okay brother. Thank you so much for replying.
Fantastic
Thank you so much
What should I do if I’m edge banding a piece with rounded corners to avoid a seam showing?

Yes
Do they have one for laminate?!
What type of laminate are you referring to Payden?
So cool!

Application no, trimming maybe a little. I would try it on a scrap piece before doing it on the real thing. Let me know how it goes.
Do you do decks or pergolas? Would like to see a video on that.
At some point I will... thanks for asking.
very nice
Great video cheers
Thanks 👍
Hmm looks like the said trimmer is unavailable. Any other suggestions. Very nice video btw. No BS just information.

A bunch of other UA-camrs recommend using just razor blades, foregoing trimmer tools altogether.
You can... but it can be hard to keep a nice uniform clean cut. Give it a go and see how you like it.

I watched hoping to find out what temp to set the iron to. I was disappointed. Much other good info.

Hi, does the banding have to colour match the wood if I’m planning on staining it all?
Thanks
Yes you can get different species of wood
@@TrainingHandsAcademy thanks for the reply.
I’ve been finding it hard to match the banding to the colour of the plywood.
Do you have a local woodworking store?
