    The UK can still join the EU, but the UK cannot rejoin the EU on past terms.
    Which means if the UK joins the EU, then the UK needs to adopt the Euro and Schengen permanently without opposition.

    • @rayc9539
      @rayc9539 Рік тому

      I understand that. However, what about the possibility of EFTA/EEA membership which would grant us access to the single market?
      Even though I am enthusiastic about the EU social project, I realise that majority of Brits are mostly interested in the economic aspect, such as single market participation.
      During the brexit negotiations, a Norway style deal was proposed for the UK, but it was rejected. Norway is a member of EFTA/EEA and has access to the single market.
      If we were allowed into the EEA, we would be allowed to keep our pound and have autonomy over our agricultural and fishing legislations. I think this would be the best option for the UK, rather than full EU membership, anytime soon. The British exceptionalism is still prevalent, thereby creating an obstacle. Thankfully, demographic changes have produced more pro-eu individuals.

      @@rayc9539 EFTA members have said they do not want the UK as a member, so the only way back into the SM is through full EU membership.

      @rayc9539 Рік тому +1

      @frankoneill5675 I recall something about that. However, that was during the brexit negotiation process (2018-2019). I recall the then prime minister Theresa May was proposed with the EFTA membership offer, but she rejected it on the grounds that it would not be in the "will" of the British people. I also remember the UK being seen as an "unreliable partner" at the time. However, with the elapsed time and the public increasingly having a change of heart, who knows what the members' position would be on the UK EFTA membership...

      @frankoneill5675 Рік тому +8

      @@rayc9539 It has nothing whatsoever to do with what happened at that time.
      EFTA members feel a big country like the UK would dominate EFTA (total population about 14 million) to the present members' detriment.
      Secondly, when EFTA adopt new EU laws, they must agree unanimously to do so, or none can adopt them. There is a fear that with the UK's historical negativity and reluctance, if they refused to accept new laws, and held all the members back, that eventually EFTA would diverge so far from the EU that the EU would end the EEA agreement, with EFTA members losing access to the SM.
      A further problem is that to allow a new member into the EEA agreement, the agreement would have to be reopened. Once that happens, everything in the agreement is open to renegotiation. EFTA fear that reopening it could leave them with a worse deal than they have now. It is too big a risk.
      There could be other reasons as well that I'm not familiar with.
      Aside from all that, in order to reopen the EEA agreement, it would require the unanimous assent of all thirty odd signatory states, EU and EFTA. That is thought to be almost impossible.
      The realistic route to SM access for the UK is to apply for EU membership.

    • @rayc9539
      @rayc9539 Рік тому +3

      @frankoneill5675 Yeah, what you said was quite insightful, and I understand the reservations that EFTA states have against the UK.
      I must remind you of something, though - the politicians' historical reluctance is not an accurate reflection of the general UK population. The majority of the political parties are plagued with exceptionalism, for whatever reason. I have a feeling this reverberated to the public at some point.
      However, the UK is having a more favourable view of the EU, despite the Conservative government apprehension. It took brexit to make the UK realise that they are not, in fact, better of on their own, despite what the delusional Conservatives think...
      Compounded by the "hard" brexit delivered to us by the conservatives, because they did not wish to pay anymore money to the EU...
      I do wish that we can be EU members again. I'm only a youngster (26), but I have no doubt that EU membership was a contributing factor to the UK's prosperity over the decades.
      I am still astounded that a simple majority (51.9%) was required to enact such a major constitutional change with so much uncertainty. It was only an advisory vote, after all.
      Not every leave voter actually wanted to depart the single market. Remember, brexit only refers to EU membership. That was what was stated on the ballot paper. There were people aware of the EEA possibility and voted to terminate EU membership in favour of being an EEA member, in turn remaining in the single market, and paying less to the EU.
      It was and still is a convoluted mess, and I wish it to end. I have absolutely no hope in the conservatives because of their wrecking ball tenure, and I have lost faith with Labour because of Kier Starmer.
      Kier Starmer used to openly advocate for single market membership and even backed a second EU referendum in 2019 when he was chancellor. He knew about the lies and misinformation that influenced many leave voters. Now he claims there is "no case" for re-entering the single market or customs union. That's an interesting twist. He can not be trusted. If Labour loses the next general election, his brexit u-turn may just be to blame. What a freak show the UK has become.

      I would have thought it was obvious Andy - it takes a decade or even more to undue the mess the EU created in the UK.
      Trade, cultural and political relationships with other nations were ignored or even damaged because the EU had an ever growing “supernation” concept.
      Investment and consumption was targeted towards the EU, not to external nations.
      Law making had been neglected because of a reliance on EU law.
      All of this takes time to repair.

      Just reminding you it took until the mid 1960s to undo the damage done by Continental Europe between 1939 and 1945.
      Bet you would have welcomed them with open arms.

    No sympathy at all for Brits. Their empire crumbled long ago but the mindset that came with it still existed. It's good to see reality finally catch up with them.

      We need no sympathy.Brexit means we are free from European tyranny,which we have a proud 1000 year history of defeating.Rule Britannia!What proud history do most European nations have?Each of them has been at war with the others for hundreds of years,each one has suffered humiliation at the hands of each other.Britain has not.
