  • Our ice fishing season kicks off early this year with a 40 mile snowmachine trip in search of Northern Pike. The Alaskan winter landscape and a quick meal out on the ice made for a great day. Back at the cabin we process the day's catch and compare two simple methods for cooking breaded pike.

Here's a hint for using tip ups for pike-When a pike takes a bait, it will run with the bait until it stops to turn it around in it's mouth before swallowing the bait. Wait until it stops and then wait until the line moves again before you set the hook. It will improve your hookup success.

I think the sorry was because the first hit definitely didn't kill it, so she was saying like, "sorry you're definitely going to experience some abuse, and not just die immediately like you would if I had done a flawless hit". Usually you hit a few times, but it's generally dead after one if you get the right spot nice and hard and square, and the next one or two are just in case.

If we didn’t want to take the time with the “y” bones, we’d skin them, fin them and chunk them, pressure cook for ten minutes. After they cooled, we ground them with saltines, eggs, parsley and a bit of onion and made fish cakes out of them...fried of
course..be good with some cocktail sauce made from the rose hip ketchup!!

This video made me weep remembering the taste of Northern Pike my father used to bring home from fishing trips to the Great Lakes when I was a kid in Ohio.
Don't remember Pike being bony. Guess my parents knew how to get them all out. I recall the use of tweezers. Tho bone free, we were incuraged to take a bite of bread while eating the fish. Something about bread softening the effect of getting a bone stuck in our throat.
The flavor was nothing like chicken. Use flour in the batter next time with your favorite herbs and spices. A bit of beer or club soda will make the batter light and fluffy.
Beware of corn meal/flour. Most found in the US, the seed, plant, soil has been treated / sprayed with Round-Up. GMO nasty.
Grateful for a care package of Northern Pike to the Bay Area. Willing to pay for shipping.
    Bless you!

I asked my dad (a born and raised Minnesotan and raised in an exceedingly outdoorsy family) if he’d ever had much luck with tip-ups and he just kind of shrugged and gave a perturbed look. He said he typically had more luck with jiggle sticks, but that it really depends on the bait you use. I asked him about the biggest northern he ever caught (they just call them “northerns” there) and he said it was around what you guys were catching that day. He says the ones in Alaska are bigger.

You can keep your pancake batter in a ziplock bag and put it inside your jacket your body heat will keep it unthawed and when you're ready to use it just cut the corner off the bag can squeeze it into your frying pan. Thanks for the video folks, it brings back a lot of memories as we ate a fair bit of pike - called them jack fish - in northern Saskatchewan. They're tough to fillet with no bones however. One thing we did was cook it mostly, then run it through a meat grinder, make it into patties and finish cooking it. That works with most bony fish actually. Thanks again and all the best to you folks this winter.

I was thinking the same. We fished ocean near Montauk and fish there is distinctive saltwater flavor. Lake fish is more oily, slimy but there are some that are marvelous, like brown trout. Nice to see recreational fishing like this. Hardwater fishing is not glamorous, its a long day and you're beat tired at the end, can't cook, just enough energy to stop for pizza and then make it home to sleep and start the next day before the Sun rises.

I wonder if the chickens outside were also thinking "It tastes like a chicken nugget...!!" 😆
Northern pike are indeed very delicious. We've done quite a few pike catch and cook episodes too and our reaction from tasting the fried pike was like yours. I definitely prefer them than halibut, which is a pretty bland fish. Pike itself already has quite a bit of flavour without seasoning IMO. The ones you caught were also the best size for eating I think. Good job you two. 🙂

Couple of tips on tip up fishing. First off, looks like you might need more line on your setup so that there is less resistance when the fish takes the bait, they actually make special tipup line if that will not freeze on the spool. When setting the flag under the spindle, put it under that drop down wire because it will spring the flag easier. If you have old pail lids cut a slit in them that the pole can go through and use it to cover the hole with the tipups to slow down the holes freezing up and stops snow blowing in the hole. And get yourself some depth finders, they are like a buck and help you find your depth quickly, also thread a button on the line and place it at your depth so when a fish runs a bunch of line 0off you can just put it right back to the button and won't lose your depth. Last note, not sure how expensive cheap hot dogs are up there, but try one of those on your tipups. Here they are cheaper then bait a lot of times and work well, especially for bigger pike. Also, check out the 5 fillet method for pike on youtube, you won't have to deal with picking out those Y bones! Works great!

The baked one might need some lemon sprinkled on it after baking to get things really going in the flavour department.

Here in Wisconsin, when ice fishing, catching "pike" we call them northern, because we also catch walleye pike. But any way we usually pickle the northern which softens or dissolves the bones. It is so delicious that way. The meat is firm with a great texture. You should try it. I don't remember the recipe but I know it had a very cheap white wine in the pickling liquid. Vinegar and sugar and spices. Only take about a week to pickle and its ready to eat.
Guess I'll have to go fishing this winter when the lakes freeze. Love your vidz wish you posted more often. Always look forward to the next vid. Can't wait!

I found myself wishing I could give you a few tips. Let's start with the bait. Most bait have air bladders and do not want to sink, until you poke a hole in the air bladder. When you brake the air bladder and sqeeze out the air, you will not need the extra sinker on your line. Next, find the bottom with your bait. When the line stops going down, you found it. Lift up a couple of feet and set the depth. Pike have eyes on the top of their head and will most times feed up. When you get a flag up, let the pike run, till it stops. Then wait, when it starts moving again start pulling the line it. When we catch pike, we will quickly slab it on the ice, and leave the guts down the hole when you leave. You can also burry the fish or slabs in the snow to keep them from freezing. When you thaw frozen pike they get very slimy. Back to the baits, a quick strick rig is ideal for the tip ups, you tube it. For the rods, Tube jigs are great baits for pike. They are soft plastic baits you can use with our without bait. Great for lake Trout too.
