The microscopic library of games killed it. Instead of building a platform that makes use of existing games- they felt that it was worth it to make an entirely new system that forces you to port games over and have people purchase it again.
Well Google, was it worth it?
Adding games you already own would have been the way to go
There were multiple issues with Stadia. A lot of people hate their business model, but IMO it was fine when you consider they were trying to effectively make a Console, in fact it was kind of better than Xbox and Sony in some ways as you didn't need a subscription to play your games online. You could buy a $20 game on Stadia and play it on whatever hardware you already had without ever giving them another cent. Letting you bring games you bought elsewhere doesn't really work with that model and would require them to make the Pro subscription mandatory to make sense. The primarily problem is Google tried to halfass entering an industry that takes a full commitment to successfully enter.
Google launched the service before it was ready, most of the features they advertised weren't ready and I'm not sure they were ever added. The Google assistant button on the controller did nothing for the first year, and for a cloud service that just ran in a browser, device support was severely lacking for the first year as well.
They also didn't get enough third parties on board. Nor did they commit heavily into having their own first party library. To compete as a console you either need the third party support to be a viable "main console" competitor or you need your own library to fulfill the "second console" niche. They did neither.
Finally they failed at marketing, so many people I mentioned Stadia shutting down to didn't even know what it was. For a company that makes its money of ADs, Google is pretty terrible at marketing.
They had the perfect storm for a cloud console to succeed and they still failed. The Pandemic brought tons of people back into gaming, many who didn't already have a modern console. The last gen consoles were on their last legs and next gen would cost $500 if you could even get one. Stadia had no cost of entry (if you already had a device that could run chrome and a controller) and was always in stock. When Cyberpunk launched the hype was so big non-gamers wanted to play it. Last gen was struggling to run it and even many PCs were having issues. Stadia though had a great port and they were offering a bundle at the time. The game, a chromecast, the controller, and 3 months of Stadia Pro for just $60, the price of the game on its own. That was Stadia's moment to shine but almost no one took them up on it because of their flop of a marketing strategy.
nobody wants to pay for a subscription and also pay retail for games they don't own
@@ETAPRIME If it was like GeForce Now, it wouldn't be dead right now.
@@KyleRugglesTrue but that is one of the inherent downsides of a complete cloud solution. Also Stadia didn't require a monthly fee (though everyone seems to think they did). Stadia Pro was 100% optional. It gave you 4K streaming, discounts on game purchases, and a few free games each month similar to Xbox's "Games with Gold". But If I just want to play Dead by Daylight with friends, and I'm fine with 1080p, I just have to pay for the game and then never give Stadia a single penny again.
That's what I did with Trails Rising, it is the only game I bought on Stadia. It let me play it in the browser during breaks at work, or on my phone with touch controls or with a controller attached.
I got this set for free because of my UA-cam Premium subscription years ago, and while Stadia had a very limited library that I barely used, the controller itself is very good, it feels especially good playing Destiny 2 with it, something about the triggers and control sticks makes it feel very nice. I really hope they roll out a Bluetooth update because it's seriously one of my favorite controllers.
Yeah it’s e-waste now they’re not gonna further support a product that failed
I think the service will be shut down and u can't no longer play games
@@Ryanlexz Yeah but the controller is still usable to play PC games, that's why we want a Bluetooth update so we can use it wirelessly after stadia shuts down
I recall reading a Reddit post a while ago that "claimed" that *the circuitry in the 🎮is missing specific Bluetooth feature subsets* that would allow it to be used as a regular wireless controller. (I'm hoping they were wrong.)🤞
Highly unlikely, but it would be a consolation if Google sold a decent USB dongle/adapter for it that worked with Windows/Linux.
Google will not google search your comments so just dream about it
I really hope they enable bluetooth. I really like the Dpad on it, it’s very clicky. This would make a good Retropie controller.
I'm not sure how good they are but it seems someone kind of cloned the Stadia controller and made a Switch Pro controller out of it.
if it's a standard microcontroller, modders might be able to write their own firmware to make it act like an Xinput controller.
@@OmairArifThanks! I’ll look it up, but I have a feeling those third parties probably skimped out on the Dpad and used a rubber membrane instead.
@@Linser22 did you find anything?
Oh Boy they heard your wish! Love you Google
I was in the beta for Stadia and I never had any issues with it like others did. The only reason I never fully adopted it was because Google likes to kill off services and they had no public information about what would happen to your games and such. At least they are doing the right thing and giving full refunds.
I always liked the controller though, feels good, not a bad layout. Exactly what you highlight here is the issue I have with it. It's Stadia or wired. Unless they make it so I can use it over bluetooth it is going to stay right where it is, gathering dust in a drawer.
I was literally just looking for this video as a potential controller to add to my collection, been seeing a ton of listings for them sprouting on ebay, thanks for the vid!
Yeah really really hoping we can get a patch for this for sure
They failed because rather than offering "what clients want" (which is what Microsoft game pass just did) they tried to convince people that they are wrong, that they don't really want what they think they want, and that they should want what Google wants them to want. So it does not matter if the product is good, that marketing model is always going to fail.
I think that's one of the big issues, Google's constant arrogance in thinking they can just make a product or service and people will just flock to it coz Google is making it. Actually with their track record of abandoning their stuff, their name has become a hindrance more than anything.
I have another reason for google stadia death, you have to pay the whole game just to stream it instead xbox game pass model
Apple gets away with it pretty regularly
The Apple route doesnt work on every one
Google started as the open garden, cant wall that up years later
There is a thread on r/Stadia that says the devs are looking at opening up the bluetooth on the controller through a firmware update. Nothing officially confirmed through Google corpos though.
Funny thing is that a couple of months ago, here in RSA , they started selling this product despite there being no severs at all for it this side. They still sold out to my surprise though😅
wait what, where in south Africa did they sell these babies
I really like the stadia controllers, probably my favorite controllers thus far. I hope they push an update to use them on android and PC
This controller sucks ass!! It's hard and rigid and the battery is horrible!!!!
@@DavidKen878 I know right! Gosh I hate rigid controllers! I want my controllers plastic flexing out the wazoo!
@@HoloScope the stiff buttons makes my thumb sore after awhile
@@gallyggg376 hmmm
@@DavidKen878 Uh... (picks up his Xbone v1 controller) That's pretty rigid, it doesn't twist at all... (picks up the v2 controller his brother gave him) Textured, but still pretty solid...
Wait, do you mean you like that rubberized stuff that always comes off after a few months/years? And ends up as sticky as a 90's car interior?
It's been e-waste since the day they announced it.
😂
I think they are a decent controller been using it for GeForce now
A point that can’t be argued. And to think some people started whole channels around Stadia. 😂
Toxicity has never been higher
@@David-ro1sb people start a channel on anything and parrot what the marketing teams say or copy paste old marketing quotes like "it can only do everything".
The controller is great wired for retroarch and through Steam
A company like 8bitdo could potentially create a USB-C dongle that could make it wireless, maybe even for connections to Switch, Xbox, or Playstation. Obviously more likely if, as you said, Google open-sources the code. Maybe even possible with a Raspberry Pi Zero-W, which has its own Bluetooth.
I bet a wifi server of sorts could work also
Good idea, but Raspberry Pi Zero would be overkill, are hard to find, and *might* cause noticeable input lag due to running a full multitasking OS like Linux.
If you already have one though, it'd be a fine place to start development.
Various microcontroller dev boards have bluetooth and USB 2.0, are programmable in MicroPython or CircuitPython, and are *much* easier to get hold of right now. They'd also run longer on batteries.
On that note, can the Stadia controller even supply power from its battery to a USB-connected dongle? The dongle might need its own battery if it can't.
Also, not sure whether the Stadia controller uses a faster USB protocol than 2.0, but generally there's no need for controllers, keyboards etc to do so.
Using these on deck could be cool
I'm disappointed Google chose to write off the entire inventory vs liquidating the controllers as "wired" controllers, I totally would have picked a couple up.
thats the strange part honestly ok so you dont have stadia no more but you still have a chrome cast and you still have a decent game controller and theres loads of decent android games that you could use both for
I didn't expected the intro with the call and stuff! It was refreshing seeing something unusual happening! 🤣
That guy you were talking to on the phone sounds like how I imagine the robot at the start of each video would sound.
Atleast Google was nice enough to give everybody a refund I hope so
Thank God for being a UA-cam premium subscriber and got it from Google the whole Stadia Premiere for free two years ago. Only game I ever purchase was Cyberpunk 2077 since everyone was having problems on PS4 and PC.
Your helpful and timely caller is going to visit me in my nightmares with friendly insights
Big fan of the skit in the intro, keep up the great work
I bought this version when it was at a fire sale for $22 because it came included with a Chromecast Ultra. I don't regret buying it at all. I use the Chromecast Ultra on my other TV and I can use the controller by USB. It would be awesome if they did update the firmware to make it a viable Bluetooth/wireless controller to use as a spare or for 2nd player option.
Lol you made me thought someone was calling my phone at the first part of video
Remember kids: these Silicon Valley companies are SUPER concerned about the environment. Just ask their eco reps totally not intended to distract you from the landfills of e-waste!
They literally trolled Lenovo into creating a VR headset for Them, all while having like 2 dudes working on the software as their pet project. Unsurprisingly they killed it after 6? Months and let lenovo deal with the headsets.
To be fair if cloud took over then what would happen to all the hundreds of millions of consoles and billions of plastic game packages that are constantly adding strain on the environment? One of you must have the answer
Yoooo you are almost at one million subs....thats really cool
I got my set for free for being a UA-cam Premium subscriber. I've been using mine wired, connected to my MiSTer, it's actually a pretty good controller for that! Works great! If they don't update the firmware, hopefully I can find some for sale on eBay for super cheap and just use them as wired controllers.
Same here and I actually picked up another controller last year as part of their 50% off controller promo
It's so weird that Google obsess over markets that won't use a service then kill it before trialing it in markets that would.
The controller can be used on steam. It's actually a decent controller so don't throw this away.
The whole point of the video is that it an still be used but only through cable, it works everywhere through cable, the thing is, why pay for a wireless setup to use it via cable? Thats the whole point of the problem, after stadia, it will become forever a wired controller.
This is amazing!! I’ve missed your humor since the April fools videos stopped.
I actually really like the Stadia controller. Its my go to PC controller (in the wired configuration).
How do you stop the keyboard coming up on pressing the right trigger? I can't use it in wired config for this reason.
@@RichardSmith-xw7oy Hmm... I have not had that issue. In Steam I have "generic gamepad configuration support" checked under controller settings or it won't do anything in the games and in the past I had trouble if I launched the game normally, but never had problems launching from "Big Picture Mode" in Steam so if I wanting to use controller, I have just been launching games that way. As for BattleNet I have only used it with Diablo Immortals.
Just letting anybody else who saw this video later; until December 2023. the stadia controller has some firmware where you can convert it from using the wifi connection to a bluetooth controller. Works for most operating systems except iOS (i think). Mac works. Cheers, and RIP stadia, you were fun while you lasted.
I hope they do a firmware update soon for this, I actually like the controller
mine keep disconnecting
"I had this sitting in my garage for the last 7 months." Why do I get the feeling that this is something a lot of people said.
The one major failing of Google and Stadia was that instead of partnering with companies with games, they decided to make everything built around google. So you had to buy the games you never technically owned (you don't really own any digital games or anything that requires the internet to function) and pay for a service that is dependent on your internet connection quality to even use. Granted, that last part is par for the course of any game streaming service. If google would have just competed with the other streaming services, they would not have tanked so hard and if/when they decided to pull the plug, it would have just been a simple, here are some other services that do this thing. And because they didn't waste the money on developing a shallow marketplace, they would have had nothing but upside because they learned how the service worked, how to improve it, how to sell it to companies.
But here we are, another google service they were super excited about, but didn't actually put long term effort into.
Now you’re at it - any chance of an Amazon Luna controller review?
It's a real shame Stadia shut down. The tech was solid. I used it for about a year with no issues. It's so annoying that Google didn't market the thing properly. It felt like they gave up on very soon after launch. The Chromecast that comes with it is EXCELLENT though.
first, you need a good internet provider which is not cheap in some countries second the latency for singleplayer games is ok but multiplayer is a big no-no
Tech is solid ? They really thought each publisher would invest massively and have hardware in every city to get proper service for their users? I laughed when they announced it during GDC 2019. Kojima will need to find another sponsor for his next Uber simulator, now that Sony is pissed and broke, and that Stadia went belly up...
@@rokibuca depends. If you the game server is also the streaming server you have the same lag as everyone else.
@@rokibuca Latency for multiplayer games was actually kind of a non issue. You're adding the stream latency but equally you're removing the server latency, because the multiplayer server would be located in the same data center as your game client.
@@DrNoBrazil Stadia provides the servers, not the publishers.
Nice collab with the JIgsaw killer there.
"So ETAPrime, let's play a little game, you have 15 minutes to make the Stadia controller work on a GameGear with a broken screen...or else your family will be forced to watch 15 UA-cam ads"
They are now releasing Bluetooth drivers via a tool right after it shuts down. Might be worth making a video? 🤔. I've been a fan of the channel for awhile now by the way, keep up the good work 👍 🙏
Stadia's gamepad doesn't work over BT because it lacks HID over BT, it's not like a secret or something. It only supports WIFI to minimize the delay. The gamepad just sends inputs to the Stadia VM and the Stadia VM just sends video to the Chromecast, Browser, whatever. BT connection to send inputs through the Chromecast or the PC/Tablet would have made the service completely unplayable. HID can be technically flashed, but I don't see it happening. It's there just to make the initial configuration/synchronization.
Thank you for making this video, only one O could find. I'm sad not being able to use it wireless on Steam
Really glad you did this video. Thanks!
It’s actually a nice controller. I would love to use it on a Dreamcast themed pi system.. come on Retroflag, make that Dreamcast case!!
Pretty cool of the Genie from AVGN to warn ETA about stadia shutting down.
Another way to look at it - they killed the service before the batteries on those gamepads deteriorated. If Gamers Nexus "disassembly" video is anything to go by, those controllers were e-waste from the get go (walled garden restrictions were just the icing of the cake)
Lmfao ur phone call skit to yourself is hilarious 🤣✌🏾
I'm almost buying one because $25 is good enough for a wired controller with the looks of a Stadia controller... And also, because I'm hopeful that someday, maybe (pretty please), a firmware update from Google will make this open source, or unlock the ability to be used as a Bluetooth controller.
Very official now tho
Amazon Luna fixed this issue by NOT locking the bluetooth down behind a closed source wall... even printed directions on how to pair it wirelessly via bluetooth with other devices and it's an AMAZING CONTROLLER for analog based games...
...even if Stadia hadn't shuttered, WHAT WAS GOOGLE AFRAID OF that they thought people would do if we had bluetooth access? That people might pay money for their controller to play PC Games with? Oh no, how horrible...
I signed up for a Stadia trial a few weeks ago and then they cancel the service. Funny thing is they were going to charge me for December if I didn't cancel my subscription in time and then cancel the service in January which seems sorta scummy. I luckily cancelled before they could charge me.
I bought my Stadia controller from Wal-Mart right after Google announced its closure. Today I hooked it up to my Atari VCS. Works perfectly.
Been subbed since 2017. You are still giving me useful content to this very day. Hope I can use my Stadia controller for something else other than a paperweight.
Steam have a page on big picture with a lot of controller settings and set up a variety of controller
I hope steam add the Stadia Controller like they do with the Joy cons.
It works fine through Steam already when used Wired. It sees it as a generic controller and you can configure it how you want.
As others have said the main issue is the controller is designed to connect directly to Wi-Fi for decreased latency (controller -> router -> Stadia Server instead of controller -> computer/phone/tablet -> router -> Stadia Server) which means you can't use it wireless unless Google creates a firmware update to enable the bluetooth hardware in the controller.
@n n the most likely solution for wireless will probably be someone creating a program which acts as the Stadia server and collects the button presses over WiFi. But that isn't exactly versatile or practical for most.
yeah, companies should release a firmware update for hardware so it can still be used for something. I mean google would look good keeping these out of landfills.
Every time I hear people talk about Stadia I always think of the video review that Rerez did around the time the service was initially launched. "Wherever I am, well I'm at home with a SUPER STABLE FIRE INTERNET CONNECTION, and Stadia don't lets me play".
My dad partnered with goggle at work for some time ang got the stadia founders edition controller with the chromecast ultra. Also the controller will work on steam via usb and it has the same mapping as the Xbox one controller. I use it whenever I'm playing controller games on steam. I wish I had the original cables for it. I wish I had 2 stadia controllers now.
Any updates on Bluetooth solutions?
you can use the stadia controller as a wired controller on android that has USB-C or could use it with a Micro USB and on PC
I was a very big fan of Stadia and it works very well. For me, its the best offer that i buy the game full and play it without an annoying GamePass or so. NOW i have to buy my games (ok they were only a few incl. Cyberpunk) once again... Now, i'm on building a midrange gaming-PC and i hope, that there would be a way to use my loved Stadia Controller.
I have been using the Stadia controller for almost a year now. It really is a great controller. Some may think it's heavy for a controller, but I like that is has some weight to it unlike the Playstation controllers.
Aside from the obvious bluetooth function not being available for non-Stadia platforms, it really is a great controller. I also got ahold of the limited edition blue controller and the black one.
Oh yeah side note, Google is actually considering enabling the built-in standard Bluetooth function. Perhaps after all this time the controllers can be used as a normal wireless controller!
I hope they open-source or at least cheaply license out their patent on the wifi connected controller tech - for cloud gaming, this saves valuable input lag by skipping a hop and it's something no other cloud gaming service can offer.
Honestly I find Shadow to be the best "cloud gaming" experience simply because it's just a cloud pc you can install whatever you want on. I have a desktop that's higher spec than the default Shadow, but I keep a Shadow sub as a backup PC should my desktop suffer major hardware failure, and to have access to a decent gaming pc on even low spec devices like my cheap tablet or a 20 year old laptop that I still have for some reason. So long as you are located relatively near one of their datacenters, and you have a good/reliable internet connection, you should have a great experience with most games. I don't play competitive/shooter type games so I can't say how good it would be for that though, but just playing MMO's and single player games, I haven't noticed any sort of latency/lag issues at all. In the interest of transparency, I am located relatively close to my datacenter, and I do have an excellent ISP so someone else's experience may vary from mine.
I got a couple for these last year with the $22 deal and never really used them bc it can't be used as a bt controller. The research I've found said bt can only be used to connect the wifi. If that true I hope Google could at least set up some kind of wifi server to use the controller on other games besides letting these go to ewaste. Xbox proves cloud gaming has a future and someday servers will be more powerful than any consumer can purchase.
Is the Chromecast ultra good for anything either?
i got a stadia kit for free with youtube premium and gave my friend the controller to use wired with a raspberry pi 4 and retropie.
While I'm not gonna mourn the shutdown, it's such a waste of hardware; legitimately the best controller I've ever used
They're super cheap on Marktplaats here in the Netherlands already.
I have played Stadia every day for almost 3 years now. I'm super bummed about it going away, but the refunding everything purchased is above and beyond what any other company has done. The controller is my favorite over Xbox and PS, and I do hope the enable Bluetooth on them. If not, I'll use it wired.
Can't wait for these to be on sale for $1 lol the controller itself (even just wired) would be worth it though.
USB-C Bluetooth dongle perhaps? Not sure if it'd be compatible to send gamepad signals like that though...
Nintendo needs to talk shop with Google.
When I used Stadia, I loved how it ran. It honestly could have had a great deal more support had they not pulled a Saturn and rushed it to market. This sabotaged the usability at launch. And then it ended up losing tons of 3rd party support, much like the Virtual Boy and Wii U.
Of course, now Stadia is one of the biggest flops of all time. Not just because of its short life, but because you can never play on it after this coming January. That essentially makes it a bigger high profile flop than the Virtual Boy.
I feel like there is definitely a legal precedent for google to face legal repercussions for unnecessarily adding to e-waste collections if they don't update the firmware controllers to allow for normal bluetooth usage. Environmental Lawyers must be frothing at the mouth.
🤣 i wouldnt doubt it
it got a lot of hate, but personally I loved it. never had any issues with it. shame.
What are you gonna do with your new e-waste?
Chromecast Works fine with my projector, controller works fine with my PC.
No issues with paying full price for streamed games? What is wrong with you?
@@megakoni1 Games were heavily discounted in most cases. Saying that, I mainly used it for Pubg free to play. Looking forward to the refunds though.
I got this for free as a YT premium subscriber...maybe used Stadia once? Didn't see much use for it myself. Compared to the Luna controller, this was a nicely built controller and I do hope they make the bluetooth functional so it doesn't become e-waste.
The best part is that ETA Prime's robot voice
I purchased mine from Google directly and got no refund. I hope they give us an update as it would be waste to see it go to land fill. Even if they released some sort of dongle it would just save them going to waste.
Maybe I am crazy, but I just found someone selling a few of these off in my area for $15, so I am picking one up on the hopes that Google pushes a firmware update to enable Bluetooth. If not, I can still use it wired. But I figured it was worth the risk, and maybe I can actually use it and get a good deal before they drop the update and everyone starts asking an arm and a leg for hardware they got refunded for.
supposedly you can use those controllers with shadow (cloud pc service), but i dont know for sure
Actually interested as to what happened to these Chromecast Ultra especially the controller after the shutdown then this popped up on mu notif
honestly want one even w/o wireless. I usually use wired controller for my Tab8 with Dolphin/Aether emulation, reduces latency a ton over bluetooth
I actually bought it cus after ot was announced. I paid around 25€ and got the whole premiere edition.
I just love the controller and you can always find a way to use a chromecast.
Personally I use the controller on PC Only... There is already a software that allows you to fully use the controller including even vibrations... At this point its the best option to grab it, since its even cheaper than those fake xbox knockoffs
Man got his Stadia update from Anonymous inc lol
Not like the controller would be worth much, since its apparently a pain in the rear to open them up, they'd need a custom shell to make them easier to open, so they could be repaired
I think they announced it to indie game studios who develop titles exclusively for stadia also with that creepy telephone voice over night
Do a review now that Bluetooth is enabled, please.
Stadia was the best cloud gaming platform! Google is losing a money maker! This is crazy!
So you got the set with controller and chrome cast and you will get a full refund for it.
It will be then free hardware, and you can still use controller with a wired connection.
Not a bad deal I would say.
On the other hand if the BT is build in why did they not enable it for the past 3 years?
For any controller being able to use with as many devices as possible is always a plus.
They should keep seeling the controller as a chromecast accesory by bluetooth.
I hope they update the firmware so it can be Bluetooth enabled compatible, that would at least give it some purpose after the servers shutdown.
Google has an update to use the controller via Bluetooth
I guess a bluetooth enabled Stadia controller with a Chromecast with Google TV 4K could actually be a nice little low end gaming console. A modern day Ouya.
Can stadia controller still be used as famepads on chromecasts?
So if I buy one now will be refunded in January?
This should be something that governments should give out fines per day until full access to the functionality or code is given to the public to reduce e-waste. There are more devices that are thrown away than charging bricks that go unused, and we all know that the EU wanted to have the same type of cable on all devices to reduce e-waste. This is the real solution to the e-waste problem, requiring open software/hardware for unsupported devices.
If Google decides to do a firmware update, but it's a security update to prevent firmware tampering, then that'll kill the homebrew scene
Any possible way to use it as an emulation device since it is a chromecast device
Tbh id love for some hacked firmware to use it with a home gaming server (like a diy stadia service for my personal steam games)
bought reWASD, works like a charm on windows
To be honest, I’m not a fan of cloud gaming at all. But I’m also a big supporter of game preservation. Cloud gaming and “cloud computing” I believe is ruining that.
I feel that amazon's luna is next
The writing on the wall for me was when they sent me this same set for free, just because I was a UA-cam premium member. Don't get me wrong I tried it and it worked, but it was still pretty useless to me
I purchased this same one for 20 bucks solely for the 4k chromecast
If I buy this now, will I get a refund and therefore a free cromecast?
Why oh why would they release a controller that had Bluetooth capability and not have it initialised from the start?! I hope they do allow an update then I'd pick one up.
I got 2 of the kits when Google sent them out free to certain accounts, We still use the Chromecast ultra every day, the stadia gaming wasn't as good as Xbox cloud gaming.
