  • A spoof of Western movies centering on Sid as a near-sighted gunslinger. The extended middle section with the extended shots from a, well, unusual camera angle are a riot.
This copy comes courtesy of a fellow Sid Caesar fan from Europe who recorded a couple of hours of the reruns, which haven't been seen on TV for over 25 years. Thank you, Richard!

The love scene in the hotel room, with only the feet and legs to convey emotion, was absolutely brilliant and hilarious. Thanks so much for posting!

The bit at about the 11:00 minute mark, with Carl starting to sweat, and the water ending up coming down his face in buckets, is hysterical, and seems to have Mel Brooks fingerprints all over it..LOL...

The zaniest bits always seem to. I also wonder about the boots pausing to play hopscotch! --kjh

Mel wrote this pretty much one in toto, I think. It's an embryonic "Blazing Saddles" as you see by the title, and the song- pure Mel. Also the garter, the sweating, the ankle kiss, and the hidden face of the hero, (a new gun man in town with a surprising and hilarious disadvantage- think of Cleavon Little as the new Sheriff of Rock Ridge).... LOL classic Brooks! Looks like some edits have been made however. Nonetheless, wonderful sketch, awesome post, thanks so much!

Giles, wouldn't it be amazing if in fact Mel, brought this skit from the back of his mind some 20 years later as an outline for Blazing Saddles..I understand from reading and watching interviews, that most of the skits were supposedly collaborative efforts...that is to say, if someone tossed out a strong idea, and Sid really liked it, not just the idea guy would work it, but he would get assistance from the other all-star writers, to come up with the finished sketch...but I really agree with you on this one...if Mel didn't do the whole thing himself, he surely must have done the lion's share of the writing here!..The frustrating thing here of course is that Mel and Carl are still very much alive with all their marbles, and with a little prompting of their memories, could probably give us the answer!

Just the kind of Western you'd expect from a bunch of New York smart alecks! ;) (Yes, I'm talking to you, Mr. Brooks!) Between Sid & Co. and MAD, it's a wonder anyone in the mid '50s could take ANY movie seriously. Thanks for sharing.

The movie satires are generally my favorite sketches from the Caesar shows. Thanks for the comment, firefly1933-- and don't think I don't know what your username refers to. I ran out and got a four year old child to explain it to me. ;) [wgw]

Just don't try to buy peanuts and lemonade from the venders outside. Especially if you're wearing a hat...

"Vacant Holsters" begat "Blazing Saddles"? Mel had to have written this one. 😂

AND Nanette Fabray was quite hearing impaired and had to keep on top of the ad libs.

      Sounds like Thurl Ravenscroft.
