    What’s the movie Saving Private Ryan about?
    Steven Spielberg directed this powerful, realistic re-creation of WWII's D-day invasion and the immediate aftermath. The story opens with a prologue in which a veteran brings his family to the American cemetery at Normandy, and a flashback then joins Capt. John Miller (Tom Hanks) and GIs in a landing craft making the June 6, 1944, approach to Omaha Beach to face devastating German artillery fire. Miller's men slowly move forward to finally take a concrete pillbox. On the beach littered with bodies is one with the name "Ryan" stenciled on his backpack. Army Chief of Staff Gen. George C. Marshall (Harve Presnell), learning that three Ryan brothers from the same family have all been killed in a single week, requests that the surviving brother, Pvt. James Ryan (Matt Damon), be located and brought back to the United States. Capt. Miller gets the assignment, and he chooses a translator, Cpl. Upham (Jeremy Davis), skilled in language but not in combat, to join his squad of right-hand man Sgt. Horvath (Tom Sizemore), plus privates Mellish (Adam Goldberg), Medic Wade (Giovanni Ribisi), cynical Reiben (Edward Burns) from Brooklyn, Italian-American Caparzo (Vin Diesel), and religious Southerner Jackson (Barry Pepper), an ace sharpshooter who calls on the Lord while taking aim. The film's historical consultant is Stephen E. Ambrose, and the incident is based on a true occurrence in Ambrose's 1994 bestseller D-Day: June 6, 1944.

      my biggest gripe with this scene - aside of huckem being absolutely useless - is all the guys that felt the need to be on that tank - only for most of them to get all shot up by the 20 mm gun. such a waste. it only needed 2 guys max to clear out any survivors f the tank crew with grenades but instead we see the loss of at least 6.

      hate to break it to you but most germans are actually depicted as quite poor Soldiers. Bad tactics running into Machine gun fire advancing with an unsupported open tank into a city environment so on so on. At this point of the war, the counter attacks on the Normandy bridgehead, the allies were facing elite German troops and suffered casualty rates around 1 for 1. Despite of complete Air superiority and massive Equipment advantages. In this Movie the Ratio seems to be like, except the opening scene which is the only realistic one if you disregard the Bunkers where much further from the beaches, like 10 Germans for 1 American which is complete Bs of course. The Germans seem to be advancing with no Strategy just to get mowed down in way too many scenes. Just very unrealistic, shame cause the movie had real Potential and some amazing scenes of course

    • @ryancamara5689
      @ryancamara5689 Рік тому +2

      @@Kupferdrahtful that is true in many cases and it’s obviously due to the movies perspective and point of view, but there are some arguments in the reason why these Germans seem overwhelmed and the Americans succeed so well, first of all these men were rangers and paratroopers, if the movie is to be believed they are second rangers, but that would be inaccurate as they landed at pointe du houc, but since they landed at Omaha they would have been the remainder that landed at Omaha along with the 5th. The paras are 101st and would have been holding this bridge for 7 days now and survived the shelling of the town, these were well trained elite units that now had a home field advantage of being on the defensive, now yes by now they were facing the ss reinforcements however this was not a large unit, when they scouted it they caught a half track two tigers the tank destroyer and about 50 men on foot initially with more showing up later, the wiki says about 100-150 men, this is a very hard battle but not unheard of odds especially with the circumstances. They also had a lot of prep time and a pre made kill zone which most of the fighting is done in, and the advantage is lost pretty quickly which you would expect.
      Now I’m not sure if you’ve seen the whole movie, but the Germans did make some smart moves here, originally the first two tanks ignored the alleyway to circle around the larger open areas of the village, while only one tiger went down with accompanying infantry, in this scene we also see they had a half track even flanking the town as well. Tactically speaking the Americans had the advantage of determining the engagement but they also suffered some f ups. First of all the mined the road and used the combination of the land mines and machine gun nests both in the buildings and bell tower to create a crossfire, a really effective tactic which would force the Germans to pull out or dive into the nearest building in a scatter, which there are not many of hence why they’re running around confused. They also had the high ground which made it very easy to hit the Germans with bombs and Molotovs, not to mention the sticky bombs infantry could place on the tank. Now the Americans screwed up in a few ways too, they nearly were bypassed completely, failed to prevent armour from crossing at all, one blew himself up planting the bomb, thanks to a lack of ammo when the machine gun nest was stormed one German took them both out, about half way through the Germans begin pulling back and reorganizing with their other units to start hitting the flanks and split up the Americans, they target the sniper towers and machine gun positions nullifying the crossfire. They do seem scattered and unprepared but remember this was an ambush and a kill zone against well trained elites that had the home field advantage and lots of prep, which was not uncommon odds for many of these units after Normandy as well. Are Germans portrayed as bad soldiers? In a lot of mainstream movies yes absolutely, but I don’t think this one was a good example of it, cause despite how well the men were doing it did capture the determination the SS had in trying to cut a line through the allies and back to the sea, and they do have more competence here than most movies, the only fault is that they’re not main characters.

      Bombarded urban area, 2-3 story buildings, piles of dirt and bricks, holes, basements, main road, prior knowledge of the forces scale and movement and of course - enough time of preparation - in my opinion, absolutely realistic. The amount of american troops was more than 10, and with the chaos of losing most of the commanding officers on the scene the germans couldn't do much effectively for a long period of time in the kill zone. So to clear up some confusion and misinformation about the terrifying 20 mm Flak 30.
    The 20 mm cannons were infantry support weapons for the German army in the same way .50 cal was for the Americans, as insane as that sounds. It was the whole doctrine based around blitzkrieg of tanks and follow up with MG42-focused mechanized infantry squads, supported by 20 mm, because they were hellishly versatile. While MG42 was mainly a suppression tool, those cannons were there to eliminate targets. From infantry and buildings that served as cover, to less armoured vehicles. It didn't matter that they were "cumbersome", because of the assumption that Germans would always have the transports to lug these around.
    It all shifted around after the fiasco that was the entire eastern front, and the opening of the western front, where Germans were constantly on the defence. What was an effective gun turned into a defensive fever-nightmare from the abyss for the allies, because there were more than 144 000 of the bloody things produced. And Germans put them into every hedge, building, defilade, trench, hole in the wall, EVERYWHERE. Every crossroad could turn into a massacre for a troop carrier, or patrol, all because of a single well-placed 20 mm.
    These were also mounted on vehicles and different platforms to provide some AA fire, but from what I remember, that function was more often filled with Flak 38, which was literally a quad version of the same gun.
    In Saving Private Ryan, you can see its original purpose. To follow up with infantry, behind tank assault, and blast everything it can into pieces.
    Sadly, I can't provide sources, because I forgot the tittle of the article in which I've read about it, and it's late here, so I'm too lazy to scour a billion pages of google search for it.

      It doesn't hold back in portraying the brutality of war but I wouldn't say it's realistic. For example the sticky bomb they make is complete fiction, even if grease somehow worked like glue, you can't detonate comp-B or C4 like a firecracker. You need a proper detonator. Another one is Jackson sniping from the bell tower, one he would be just so much more useful with a machine gun after the initial scouting, and two you wouldnt stay in that tower because that's such an obvious target. It probably would be the first thing the tank takes out before even moving into the street.

Steamboat Willie was Wehrmacht who was the soldier Upham vouched for to let go who ended up linking up with the SS and killed Captain Miller and others and Upham recognized him as well. Bazookas, especially the panzerfaust and panzerschreck were pretty commonly used against infantry towards this point in the war as warfare got more close quarters for the Germans, so pretty realistic there. Hence also the 20mm, once designed for vehicles now being used against infantry

    It is not possible to shoot inside the tank through the viewfinder. The Tiger tank had 5 cm thick armored glass .
