DISCLAIMER: This was my first video on the channel, so I was still figuring out how to present the data. Some figures are a bit off (like for Rocky II and Rocky III) because I didn’t include profit-sharing earnings from backend deals. The "Hits & Flops" labels and the summary card at the end are also missing, as I introduced those in later videos. I hope you enjoy this one anyway!
You have to consider the film needs to make double it's budget to break even due to worldwide advertising and in many countries like China you only get something like 20% of the box office takings. What it makes at the box office is heavily taxed.
That's correct, @marktwain2053! This was my first video on the channel, so I was still figuring out how to present the figures and chose to exclude backend deals in most cases, which made the video slightly confusing. However, I learned from this and included all backend deals in my later videos. I'm also considering remaking this one...
Yep, he must have made a fortune producing and writing and he knew that the Rocky franchise was hot and would be like an eternal conveyer belt of royalties coming in. I'd imagine that he'd also earn a fortune from merchandise too. If you Google his net worth the average from the sites that are up is north of 400 million. That's most likely after tax too I'd imagine. He did have some bad flops though but that would fall on the producer and director I'd guess.
He was the writer and producer of all the Rockys and Rambo movies. He owns the rights and royalties to the movies, so his paycheck to himself upfront are small but everything is made on the backend.

Why so little for Rocky 2 and 3? Even as a base salary that doesn't seem right after the success of Rocky when Stallone was the creator of this franchise. No royalties included? Some of the box office receipts also seem ridiculously low.
Great observation, @gustaaf1892! And you're right; most figures in this video do not include backend deals. This was my first video on this channel, and I was still figuring out how to present the data. It ended up being a little confusing, so I'm considering redoing it...
You can see his peak pay then the slow downward trend as his pictures were flops. When his paycheck was larger than the box office take, you know there is a falling star.

Some of these numbers are off but that's to be expected, but why don't you do a total tally at the end? Not sure if it was you or someone else, but I was watching the Al Pacino post and there was a total at the end.
Thank you for pointing that out. This was my first video on the channel, so I was still figuring out how to present the data. I introduced the final totals in later videos as an improvement. I'm glad you found it interesting.
except for Rocky, where his payday would be equivalent to about $15 million in 2024 adjusted for inflation, Sly got seriously ripped off in the 70s in terms of box office returns. Only 75k for Rocky II and 120k for Rocky III? That can't be true. Anyway he more than made up for it the rest of his career, where he was vastly overpaid for formulaic and forgettable films. Sometimes his salary accounted for half the movie's budget. The lone exception is Cop Land, which he made to prove that he was a serious actor. He never was, he could just play Sly.
Great observation! Some of the numbers are truly quite unbelievable, especially in the case of Rocky II and III. I didn't believe them at first either, but I checked and double-checked, and-according to various sources-this was actually the case. My video lists only his upfront salary, but he certainly had backend deals as well. Even if he was ripped off, no need to pity him; as you said, he more than made up for them later on. As for how serious an actor he is: well, he is a true actor compared to Schwarzenegger. 😉
@@BoxOfficeJoe the 80s produced 3 of the best-paid worst actors in history: Arnold S., Sly and Bruce Willis. Nice to be very well-paid just for being yourself.
My "insult" is a bit out of context @@richardrooney2189 . I thoroughly enjoy Arnold's work and I believe he has an iconic screen presence. But I agree with @MrEab2010 and @quanganhnguyen1837. There are actors who can play only a certain kind of character.
@conilmionomecripto thank you for pointing this out. His paycheck for acting in Rocky III was really just 120k. However, he also produced and directed the movie and had some backend deals which ultimately brought millions for him on the long term - those numbers are not official however. My video simply lists his acting paychecks. I will clarify this detail in future videos.
Sly said I got a beautiful wife and 3 beautiful daughters, so pay me because beautiful women are expensive, but their the reason I want a job that pays 6 and 7 figures 😎👸👸👸👸
I don't believe that either but I will say it does happen, sometimes they take pay cuts so other actors or other people get more money, it is not common but it does happen
You are right @shaz2761 and thank you for pointing this out! He had backend deals which made him millions on the long term. However, my video lists his acting paychecks only. Perhaps I will clarify this in future videos to avoid confusion.
All those videos are totally sh1t and why all you believe that some random guy knows others confidential information? This videos is just for like's and views
I see them as two almost completely different movies, @sidneygreen9120. The original is a gritty crime film focusing on mood. The Stallone version is less serious but more action-packed, with a Hollywood vibe and ramped-up spectacle. However, I have to admit that I prefer the original-I usually do.
Working in the finance industry, I would say that this is just about right People forget the guy was also the Director and Producer. Therefore the results were always going to be make break Unless you worked for someone else as well
Great observation @cmonman7664, and thank you for bringing this up! However, there is no mistake there. Stallone took that drastic pay cut as a bold strategic choice to distance himself from being typecast in action-heavy blockbuster roles. He wanted to prove his range as an actor and transition into more serious, character-driven roles. He even gained 40 pounds for the part to show his commitment and impress critics.
@oddsandwindsocks5905 In many cases, actors get paid by the studio before the release of the movie. So if it's a flop, its a loss for the studio but not for the actor.
What was with the sh**ty paycheques for Rocky II and III? Not only did he act, he wrote and directed. I can't believe those figures, that's ridiculous. There must be a law against it. He was exploited.
Thank you for pointing this out, @FrancisXLord! Actually, he made much more with those movies through backend deals (meaning profit shares). My video lists only his one off, upfront payment. This was my first video on this channel and to be honest, I was still figuring out the ways to present the data. My later videos include backend sums as well, to avoid confusion.

Sorry to hear that, @brucef310. It's true, I don't include absolutely everything. I have a recipe, hope this clarifies: Only theatrical movies are presented here. So TV movies, Direct to Video releases, TV Series, Mini Series and Shorts are NOT included! Movies where he had a very minor role or a cameo are also NOT discussed in this video. Little-known movies and smaller projects may also be excluded in order to keep the video entertaining.
The producers offered Stallone 250K not star in Rocky. They wanted a big name actor to star in the movie like Ryan O'Neal or Burt Reynolds. Once Stallone was cast, they cut the budget even further.
He earned $10 million for his role as Stakar Ogord in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," but reportedly, he ended up giving his salary back out of gratitude because he was excited to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He stated that his real paycheck was actually being involved in "the next generation's mythology."
