I have caught north of 150+ Bass over past few years, thanks to you. I still come back and watch all of your videos, because I always walk away feeling like I've learned something new and interesting. I also know your advice and methods work. I've caught a majority of Bass because of them. Thanks for taking time out of your day to make and post these videos for us. Greatly appreciated.
I myself live in Northern Illinois as well and have found out over the years bass fishing black and blue 💙 is tried and true around here from the Fox River to the Illinois and the ponds around here
I really appreciate how you tackle colors from several angles. For me, color isn't the most important factor but it can add that finishing touch to enhance my presentation and help my bait stand out against other potential food or prey species.
This explains alot! I have 3 major different ponds that I like to fish. One is crystal clear, but has no crawfish in it and lots of bass, so I do really well with bright yellows, whites, and pinks. Another is murky green with lots of moss, frogs, and duckweed, so black & dark reds work well. Then the other is a river runoff with a rocky bottom, and has bowfin & gar in it so green pumpkin & purples do well. So, it just goes to prove the point that you gotta pay attention to the life of the pond/lake and fish with what the fish are looking for.
Cool topic Steve, "Contrast VS Camo I'll call it. This is one of those times, unlike most, when I wish your videos were longer to pick your brain a little more on this one. For instance if the days pressure affects you selection when 10 other boats passed through the area just before you.
bass have dichromatic vision, which means they can see a limited range of colors, primarily red and green but do use chromatic ie color, cues in making visual-based decisions. Bass trained to red and green could easily discern their training color from all other colors for target colors that were similar in brightness.
Steve. Good to hear a shout out to Northern Illinois. I have fished so many times using jigs in DuPage county Illinois and I’ve never caught anything with it. I fish in leaks and a few pounds. Only thing I catch are crickets. Chirping.😢
With ya' on this one...I always switch colors before I'll switch baits. Also keep a chartreuse or red DipIt marker around...sometimes just adding a bit of contrast will do the trick. Tight lines!
@SteveRogersOutdoors oh cool. I'm in New Lenox. I generally kayak and bank fish. Always looking for new places to fish. Any recommendations? ( not trying to steal any secret spots)
I fish in deep, rocky western reservoirs and have been fishing with swimbaits lately, like Cullshads and River to Sea. I caught my first bigger swimbait fish a few weeks ago. I get a lot of followers, and I use rainbow patterns or white. Would changing to a darker color help, or is it just the nature of throwing bigger swimbaits?
This is the channel I go to when I wanna learn something, every other channel is just entertainment.
Thanks!

Thank you! I really appreciate and I’m so happy you are having success.

Another great video! This channel is so underrated, you’re always so informative and no nonsense. Keep up the great work!
Fantastic info again sir. I love throwing a darker weighted Texas rig.
I needed this
Hey, Steve, great to see ya and pray you are well. Love this video. Be safe and have a great weekend
Thanks, you too! Have a blessed day!
Man your videos are really good when compared to other fishing channels. I love your video composition 👍

That’s definitely the way I look at it too. I prefer the bass be aggressive all day - lol, and eat whatever I tie on.

This is great stuff! Thanks for sharing it.
Great plan for narrowing down choices Steve. Thanks!

Bear in mind that, from what I hear, studies show that bass can only distinguish between red, green, dark and light.

I really love fishing the DuPage river. Just a beautiful place winding through the area with some nice smallmouth in it.
When I get short strikes with a fluke I like to change colors. I end up not getting any strikes at all but I still like to change colors.

So how did your white vs black experiments work out from that other vid you linked?
The white has been a consistent producer this year when fishing darker waters.
Yesterday, 70 degree water very clear on a local creek. Tried a PBJ ned with no luck. Switched to a bubblegum ned and lit them up. Go figure.
Great video. Where abouts are you in illinois?
Grundy County. About an hour sw of Chicago.

Great information thank you what would you suggest for someone new at bass fishing to pick a color of soft plastic in live in Northern part of Alabama
I thought in Bama you’re only allowed to use crimson according to state law 😅
@@lexluthor8539 I don't care if I was any football team it would be my home state and it's not alabama lol
Great question! White is always a great color and then I am really a big fan of craw colors when fishing bottom structure.
What bass tracker do you own?
The 175 txw

There are lots of followers with the bigger swimbaits. Often a sudden change of direction or a quick burst will often get them to react.
need help here!! can't get a bottom bite on lake Juliette here in ga.
When things are super tough I often go super finesse with something like a Ned rig. I will try to look that lake up.
Wait! You are in Northern Illinois! I live in Wauconda
I’m about an hour SW of Chicago.
So even though bass can't see blue, we should use blue.😂😂😂
Make it make sense! 😢
Bass only really see red and blue. Their eyes have red and blue cones.
Red and green I believe
lol imagine thinking that color selection matters that much. just pick according to water color
