Here are the only inaccuracies I noticed from it: From video: - You cant tech shield break landing - Special pummel also removes chaingrab protection" Everyone say "thank you" to Trevor now
I love how many times in this video you're like "so this is like the melee mechanic with a five letter acronym that requires 18 frame perfect inputs. In rivals it has an actual word that makes sense for the name and requires two buffered button presses."
even in rivals 1 they’ve been simplifying a lot of movement tech from games like pm and melee but i don’t lose my muscle memory switching between them which is the coolest part imo
Been hype for this ever since I stopped competing, Rivals has always been a series that felt smooth as butter but didn't have enough local support to naturally build a scene. I'm hoping this pops off so I can go back to competing, the community for the original game has been the most welcoming I've ever experienced. Rivals feels great and Rivals 2 carried that from what I've played already, and I'm really excited with how the new characters not in the original Rivals felt
Never heard of Rivals. I never got into Melee as a player but watched stuff here and ghere over the years. I was always shocked that no game came close to Melee. This is really frickin cool to learn about and I hope it becomes huge.
Can't wait for this game. Lifelong melee fan since WAY back in the Gamefaqs days. Fell in love with Rivals about 2 years ago, and super hyped to see the sequel.
Great video as always! Super thorough breakdown of the game as it stands rn, and a great overview as we head into Genesis! Sorry if this comes off as rude, but a couple points to clarify tho: - grab lockout - u made it sound like only normal pummel negates the timer, but it is removed if either pummel connects - wavedash input - for folks new to Rivals, just know that pressing shield during jumpsquat doesn’t cancel ur jumpsquat, it’ll just buffer the airdodge to ur first airborne frame. So basically so long as u try and wavedash exactly when u jump (input at the same time) or delay like in melee, u’ll wavedash just fine and with the same framedata either way - ledgedash invincibility - u can ledgedash with invincibility even after u’ve landed, but as soon as u input an attack the s disappear. So no invincible jabs/grabs, but u can safely get into shield Anyway, again, great video Wisely!
Thanks! And no worries, it's not rude! You're just more specific about certain things. EDIT: Trevor DMd me to confirm, ledgedash intangability goes away right after the waveland ends regardless of if you attack or not.
i cant wait to combo off of the chaingrab lockout grab break animation, like into a falling projectile or fleet explosion or something. that would be so swag
Going from Super Smash Flash 2 to Rivals of Aether is possibly the best thing I've ever done in terms of the games I play all the time. Rivals is just super polished and I'm real excited for the sequel.
I remember Ateozc explaining to me about the grab mechanics in person, without context of video. I was honestly still kinda lost on how it works LOL. Seeing the visual indicators of the said grab breaks is a nice touch. I’ve been playing Tekken 8 recently and seeing the similarities of that grab break mini game makes me a bit more excited / nervous for this change (Thanks King for the knowledge check PTSD 😭)
I’ve been asking about galint for weeks now! Thank you for catering to the nerds! Also, I’m willing to bet that most players will use special pummel over normal pummel in the beginning, so it might be worth it to make regrabs exclusive to the normal pummel. For balancing reasons and whatnot.
Maybe I should've have mentioned the crouch canceling 🤣 Either way, great vid and I'm super looking forward to Rivals 2! I love how intentional the mechanics are.
@@atWisely Oh I'm sure, I was just joking because it almost felt like I caused the takedown due to the timing. You said yourself in the video that you weren't covering everything, and I'm of the opinion that you've hit all the most important stuff. 13:19 love this bit! :D one of the most informative rivals 2 videos I've seen so far. man I'm excited for this game. I've been around since the early rivals 1 days. I hope all characters return for the sequel except ori and shovel knight obviously
Has babydashing changed? On Twitter there was talk (I think from Dan) about changing it to put the consistency between analog and digital inputs more in line with each other. (Maybe extending it to a 2 frame dash input?)
One thing I'm curious about ledges is how ledge grabbing works. Is it like melee where you can only grab it when you have downward momentum? Can you grab the ledge if your back is to the ledge? Are there magnet hands and if so, how strong are they?
ledge dashes from tournament winners don't have as much invincibility as a normal ledgedash (though they might be slightly longer iirc) also i feel like your recovery example with ranno divekicking the wall is misleading. ranno's divekick was changed so that he's fully actionable after a while instead of only being able to jump. so you can still do divekick walljump recoveries, ranno players will just have to relearn the spacings love the video tho, can't wait for this game!

Wtf is that Honda @ 0:55? He left our scene ~2018 and has been travelling the nation as an artist since. MY GOD does the guy on the left look and sound just like him.
Damn, I played the playtest last weekend and I had no idea most of those were even in the game. I was mashing during grabs, sometimes I would get out and think "huh, that worked I guess". This game *really* needs a tutorial.
Is slingshot (the universal movement tech in ultimate) in Rivals 2? I wanted to ask this on the Dev Q&A stream but was busy with work. Would be awesome to see slingshot in rivals 2 since it's literally just RAR but much more lenient, versatile, and beginner friendly. Any info would be great!
As someone who played Greninja and Inkling post Melee (aka two characters that often can’t do a damn thing about a low percentage shield break), boy do I sure prefer the idea of breaks popping the opponent up in the air rather than a stun-state! Also!!! Sooo glad that there is a reason to pummel now. I NEVER used to pummel. I always considered the risk of the opponent mashing out to be waaay worse than the reward of minimally more damage.
Any updates about when the beta will be? I just found out about the newsletter and signed up, but I haven't seen any other info. I'm new to rivals and really excited for rivals 2
I'm making "How X Character Works" videos that should explain all that kind of stuff! I have both the brand new characters out, but still working on the returning cast.
You can buffer it already in rivals 1 tho I’m like 99% sure, for example short hop nair then input and release a dash right before endlag finishes (within the buffer window) gives you a babydash every time I’m just hoping they extend it to at least 2f so it’s consistent on analog and digital inputs
I liked Rivals 1 a lot, but it came at a time, where i lost interest in Platform Fighters, mainly because of sucking lol But rivals 2 looks like its a lot of fun, might pick it up if it ever comes out on console
