Strangely enough, that’s not even exclusive to the remake- getting caught in/on geometry in the old PS2 games (I remember Going Commando best) will cause you to die. I think this is so you aren’t softlocked- either that, or because you never land your internal y-coordinate goes lower and lower whilst collision stops your actual player model from moving, and once you pass a certain threshold you will die from ‘falling’ (whether this is from the game being coded to just kill you once you get low enough or it’s a death plane spanning the map, I dunno).
The first one is correct, if you get stuck in a falling state ratchet will take damage as if he's on lava (commonly called a sizzle), then if he stays in that falling state the game will just auto kill ratchet unless you have invincibility activated in which case you will sizzle 3 times with the fourth auto killing you. and if you "bonk" or go into that spinning state that can act the same way as the initial sizzle so the next one auto kills you as well. but there is a death plane that still spans under the map, and it goes out for quite a while before stopping, if you manage to get to the edge of the death plane (which you can) you will just fall forever, after a couple of minute ratchet just turns invisible for some reason. And the same thing is possible on other planets as well, you can go really far out of bounds and past the death plane on veldin, quartu (first visit as clank), kerwan, nebula g34 (not entirely sure about that one), pokitaru, and quartu (as ratchet).
