    Just an FYI/warning about the Sherpa for plane approval (apologies for the length of this comment, and I hope this makes sense):
    The Sherpa carriers have a limited list for each airline of the types of planes that each size carrier is approved for, and many airlines do not publicly publish their underseat dimensions on their websites.
    When I travel with my cat, I'm usually on a smaller Delta jet (an E170/E175, which has an underseat dimension of 7.8" -- No, that is not a typo. It is genuinely under 8 inches.). The Sherpa in any size is not approved for this plane. It is designed to squash down at the back, and I think can ultimately fit, but the Sherpa is not technically "Guaranteed on Board" for EVERY plane/airline/flight, which I did not understand when I purchased it.
    For this reason, I have ended up using a different cat carrier for plane travel (from company Pawfect Pets, which compresses completely at the top but leaves plenty of headroom for my petite, 8lb cat. It also has a little "treat pocket" to slip your hand in during the flight to give treats or a reassuring pet).
    The Sherpa is a great option for larger, standard sized planes and would be what I used if I traveled on large planes.
    I have a PDF of all the approved Sherpas for each plane per Delta underseat dimensions, but I can no longer find a link online, or I'd put a link in this comment! I'm happy to send it to anyone if they are interested; I wish I could still find the PDF online!
    The FlyerTalk forum also has helpful threads to figure out carrier dimensions for other airlines.

    I have been a cat owner for over 30 years, and most certainly these softer versions were not available. In fact my cat carriers got passed down. I have no clue on collar and harness training which is required when using these more modern versions. I also didn’t know cat carriers could be tethered. Most “old school carriers” only offered side entrance openings, which was at times challenging trying to get my cats into them without a fuss. We had to turn the carriers so that the openings were facing upright. Sometimes their claws would attach to the soft material on the floor of these carriers too. So from the get-go, an anxiety provoking experience for all of my cats. On the plus side, they were very secure for travelling locally to the vet. I am so glad there are so many options out there and worth the price of comfort and ✌️ of mind.

    Have the Sleepy Pod and love it. Doubt I would use anything else. But there are a couple of downsides I'd mention that weren't addressed here.
    1) Interior is black only, so difficult to see a black cat inside. I always keep a reflective collar on my girl to help with this.
    2) Wish the interior could be removed for more through cleaning. If you're using squeezy treats or your cat vomits in the carrier you can only spot clean.
    3) Because it's collapsible it can be difficult to train the cat to go in and out of it, as you have to find a way to prop it up if you have the cover partially unzipped.

  • @lindaschweitzer5349
    @lindaschweitzer5349 2 роки тому +3

    I just had my 15 lb. Cat escape from his Sherpa carrier while on the way to the vet. He was maniacal at tearing at the zippers ...and then... yes... he broke through the zipper side, leaving it "still zipped", but now separated. From there he bolted all around the car. Fun!
    I also had a cat escape from a hard sided carrier having the bolts that hold it together. She fought just as hard as he did and one of the bolts gave way enough that she squeezed herself through. That was the last time I ever saw her.
    All my cats are very loving but all of them were born feral. They all were trapped to catch them. None them will have anything to do with a carrier..unless they are in the throes of death already.
    I do wish there really was an escape-proof carrier.

    We have the Sherpa ones , they're easy to carry , but be careful, our male cat who doesn't like us trimming his nails very often, was once snooping around the carrier we had kept in plain sight to accustomize the cats for a vet trip , got his thumb nail in the mesh and in his panic to undo it got his nail twisted and horribly caught in it. Needed to call all family members to help undo it as he was panicked and terrified within seconds.

    I just brought my three cats to the veterinarian yesterday and I used two sleepypod airs with one standard hard box carrier. It was super easy to situate the sleepy pods into the car with the seatbelt and I could carry two cats with one arm. There would have been no way for me to handle three cats in three hard box carriers. Now I just need a wheelbarrow to lug around any extra cats I end up with haha. ALWAYS CALL THE AIRLINE BEFOREHAND
    When flying with your cats, calling the airline about the underseat dimensions and restrictions is a MUST. Not all planes allow for animals to ride in the cabin. Most planes have a limit on how many animals can be on the flight, as well as seating restrictions to avoid issues with passengers with allergies or phobias. I know that the only way you can book a flight with a cat/small dog on Alaska and Delta is to call them. It is not an option when buying tickets online to add animals. Guess that seems to be the best way these airlines have found to avoid any travel day problems.
    Also important to note is that most airlines only allow one animal per person/seat ticket unless they're small enough to fit together. Sadly, multiple animals usually means either one has to ride in cargo (which is not ideal at all) or getting a travel friend/buying two seats.

      I was so fortunate on my last flight with a cat. I adopted a cat in another city through Petfinder.com. I used some frequent flyer miles to go fetch her. The staff at the Rescue helped me walk Sushi through the TSA procedure of removing kitty from the carrier so it can be X-rayed and then returning her to the carrier. We went through this a few times. Bear in mind that this cat had seen me for three consecutive days prior to our flight, didn’t know me well, and is a very smart girl it turned out. She got compliments from the TSA staff! She dealt with the TSA procedure like a Star! I was so proud. I had a disposable litter box that I offered her in the ladies room during a layover but she didn’t care to use it. She was allowed to enter a restaurant with me where the wait staff oohed and ahhed over her. She sat in the waiting room with me with her carrier door open and the tether attached and people watched. Clearly I still remember this event with pride in this little cat. She’s 4.8 pound shaded silver teacup doll face persian. She has lots of opinions.

    • @Hardin9
      @Hardin9 3 роки тому

      🐙 If you're going to do RIGHT by your cat the soft carriers are the ONLY way to go. Your cat's weight is irrelevant, what you want to look for is what the carrier is RATED FOR, the host of this channel gave that specification for the carriers she reviewed, and it looked like all of them are rated for at least 20 pounds or more, I have the #4 carrier she reviewed and I know it is rated for at least 20 pounds, and if your cat is above that weight YOU ARE BEING A BAD PET PARENT! Straight Up! Never let a pet get obese EVER! That is dangerous to their health! The most a cat should EVER weight and that's if your cat is a Maine Coon or a larger bread like that is 16 or 17 pounds. For most other breeds the ideal weight is 10 pounds OR LESS.
      The #1 carrier she reviewed really seems like a good one, if you can afford the extortion price for it, that price is a damn rip off! Otherwise I recommend getting the #4, I can tell you from experience, that one is a really good one, my lady enjoys it.

      My cats get nervous and tend to do number one and/or two even on very short trips to the vet. I found that a hard sided carrier is ideal for cleaning once I get to the vet. Sadly it’s so common for your cat to escape with those hard plastic carriers my local vet has had so many incidents of animals escaping from plastic ones either coming apart not being done up well enough Triple checking not supporting the bottom and top when walking etc and a must to cable tie together any detachable parts
      Happens with both stray and pet cats

    • @melomanias
      @melomanias 3 роки тому +1

      Not a preventative measure, but you can use puppy pads on the bottom of the carrier to absorb urine in case it happens. I find that using a carrier (soft sided, e.g. Sturdy on this video) as an additional bed for your cat, always available to them, makes the cat go really easily into the carrier when needed for vet trips and stress out less because it’s a safe space for them.

    I'm sure vets like the hard carriers with removable tops best. The process goes much faster for an unwilling cat. Hard carriers are much safer for your cat in case you encounter an aggressive dog.

    @all About Cats I was wondering if you could do a review of Cat Backpacks - separate from carriers. My cat is indoor, but I think she would like to go on an adventure outside, she is always trying to sneak outside. I dont want a cat carrier because they are kind of meshed and closed in, so the cat doesnt really get to look around. And those are more about carrying your cat somewhere rather than going on an adventure to see the world. There are a lot of different cat backpacks with some having a big window area in the back and others with just a small bubble to look out. Also construction seems to vary a lot. Could you take a look and see which backpack is the best, and in fact if this is something cats are interested in or if they would hate it?

    I just flew from KBP - IST - SFO with two cats in the Sleepypod Air on Turkish Airlines... They only allow one pet carrier in business class, but as long as the total weight of the cats plus carrier is under 8 kg you can have two cats in one carrier... While ymmv, the flight attendants let us take them out of the carrier to sleep on our laps during the long haul portion of the flight, just keep them in harness.
    I've also traveled from Japan, to Germany and to Turkey with the sleepy pod air... As well as countless domestic flights.
    Cannot recommend this carrier enough.

      @@calni27 Yes! I did put both of my cats in one Sleepypod Air. Combined they weighed about 16 or 17 pounds. If you intend to do this make sure to check with the airline you are flying on and see their specific rules. Each airline has different polices for stuff like this.
      I was flying with my girlfriend and as soon as we boarded we just took one of them out and put her into a different carrier because the flight attendants didn't care, they only were enforcing the one carrier in business class upon boarding.

      It's a great carrier, and I haven't found anything better. The only concerns are if you're worried about spills or "accidents" in the carrier. In that case, a hard carrier is better, and I've also heard some worries about breathability with the comparatively dense mesh. It's hard to say whether or not those concerns are justified, but you can crack open one of the doors if you're worried.

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  3 роки тому

      Hey there! Ideally, your cat should not be pooping or peeing in any type of carrier. The idea is to let them out frequently enough that they can use a litter box, whether that's after your trip is over or by using a disposable litter box on the way. If, of course, your cat does go in the carrier, you'll have to spray out and sanitize a plastic carrier or use your washing machine to wash the cushion of your soft-sided carrier. You can wipe down the other parts of the carrier.
      Hope this helps and wishing you all the best with your new kitty!
