- Sharks are people-eating monsters … right? They never sleep and they have no natural predators, they’re unstoppable! Well, literally all of that is untrue.
In this episode of Misconceptions, host Justin Dodd debunks some myths about the great beasts of the ocean, from whether or not punching them in the nose is a valid defense tactic, to how Steven Spielberg's Jaws changed people's perception of these creatures. Dive on in, the water's fine.

7:00 -- I wonder if anyone has tried playing Orca sounds under the water to prevent sharks approaching the coastline wherever people are actively in the water.
Your picture of a shark, presumably in a current, while talking about Great Whites sleeping in currents ... is a Tiger shark. 😮
I can't believe you didn't cover the octopus that was killing sharks in the Seattle Aquarium! That's one of my favorite shark facts! :D
Excuse me, WHAT?
@@LadySkywalkerW it's an octopus, it doesn't surprise me!
I saw "Jaws" 2 weeks before I went on vacation in Florida. I vividly remember going under water and looking out to sea where the water just fades to a murky blue and thinking, yeah, they're out there.
You needn't look that far out. If you're waist-deep in water, there can easily be a shark between you and the shore. My dad used to go parasailing and he saw sharks between people & the shore all the time, chasing fish, not bothering anybody. People just almost never notice. :)
@@wezul Absolutely true. It was just that when I went under, even though I never saw one, I knew, just beyond my vision, they were there, and that stupid movie made me keep looking.
"you're more likely to get bitten by a human than a shark - especially in New Jersey" 😆🤣
"Sharks Don’t Get Cancer" was a myth pushed in a 'health' book in the 90s
What was the health book's agenda? Eating fish prevents cancer? Swimming prevents cancer?
yes as someone who has fear of sharks these videos help they are not monsters but Animals
Saying "Don't think it!" doesn't stop a mom of two toddlers from getting it stuck in her head. Thanks for that, lol
A+ video!
Very helpful explanations for sharks, a very commonly misconceived animal!
I had the duck tales them in my head during this video, but it was shark tales 😊.
Yay sharks!
My favorite shark fact is that nurse sharks have cuddle parties
Some animals are known to be able to "half sleep". They "switch off" half their brain and later, swap sides. Maybe sharks do that?
Wait.. How does a baboon.. obtain a shark egg? Fishing?
Isn't Florida the state where people high on bath salts bite and eat each other?
Why did I know you were going to say New Jersey at the end…
Snout boxing works on small sharks
“Sharks like to eat things such as seals? I think I’m such as seals!”
San Jose, Shark City, 408 stand up 😎
aquatic kool aid man was a funny
Fish are friends, not food.
Fellow Duolingo Dutch learner? _Vissen zijn vrienden, geen eten!_ 😉
Definitely don't eat dogfish, they're disgusting. Dad caught one once. Never brought another one home!
They're some delicious friends
No I want to eat da dogfish with all kind of barbecue sauce and treatments
Now want to eat the dogfish***
Shorks
i wish i was a shark :(
Hey its Wednesday Adam's!
you’re foul for this🤣🤣 at least give the video a few hours before you start roasting the host 🤣
Ow ....no hitting
I am a nice shark, not a mindless eating machine. If I am to change this image, I must first change myself. Fish are friends, not food!
Shark Myth #1: All sharks are Great Whites.
Not all sharks are huge. Some are small about the size of a catfish or even smaller.
I recall how comically fake the scene of Jaws eating Quinn looked at the theatre. I burst out laughing. Everyone looked at me and my girlfriend gave me an elbow to the ribs.
WHO YOU CALLING GLITCHY?!
Sharks with 500+ species aren't much different than let's say Felines.
Each species can vary wildly in its behavior, aggressiveness, and it's ability to function without movement.
Bull Sharks have a tendency to be more aggressive as well as ability to survive in brackish or even fresh water. Other species can also be more aggressive.
I wonder if some sleep like some whales, where only half their brain rests at one time.
Just a thought.
As seal populations are exploding in many areas (especially close to shore) in many areas. It only makes sense sharks that feed on them will move in. Thus more human/Shark interactions occur, most being mistaken identity.
Fact is much more research is needed and the wholesale slaughter of sharks needs to end on a global scale.
They have incredible healing abilities as well as other attributes that could contribute to medical science as well.
Fish are food and friends
Exactly
My mother told be Jaws scared her shitless, almost literally. As for me, although seeing it as a 12 year old, and being rather scaredy-cat, found it a yawnfest.
sharks are so cute
This didn't help my selachophobia....
How are you still a YT channel after the BS you've pulled with copyright? It's amazing you haven't had an unfortunate encounter yet, you must not leave your basement much.
i already knew this boooo flop 😐👎
