doGreatartistsgrowontrees? I’m about to direct it at the Edinburgh Fringe. I never loved it other than the Fiordiligi arias, thinking it paler and too predictable musically compared to Figaro and Don G. But going back to it I was absolutely bowled over: the incredible characterisation, honeyed beauty, subtlety, and symmetry. As a Fleming fan I obviously reached for the 1993 Solti version which is ravishing and very dramatic and characterful - from a live concert performance, but with so much more character and fire than many others I tried with a more perfect/neutral approach. Going for blandly beautiful is not this opera’s friend.

Agreed. Though, for me the holy trinity is Don G, Figaro, Cosi. Each has their own pantheon!
