    Conductor: Gary Bertini
"Je Marche sur tous les chemins... Obeissons quand leur
    voix appelle"
Renée Fleming making her role debut in Massenet's Manon in Paris 1997. As such this is her earliest live recording of the role. She later recorded this aria with Jeffrey Tate on the album "The Beautiful Voice" which is even more spectacular a reading than we hear here, but this may be her most thrilling live account. The virtuosity is quite incredible and these might have been the easiest high Ds of her career. Her 2001 performance of the same role, in the same opera house, and the same production was released on CD and DVD.
In the line of Thais and Esclarmonde, Manon is another absurdly challenging soprano role by Massenet, who had a knack for vocal writing that demands everything of a performer technically and interpretatively. The role of Manon has been referred to as the French Brunhilde because of it's exceptional vocal demands - it is an extremely long role, requiring a flawless range from middle C up to (written) top E6s, a solid middle voice, excursions into chest register, a proper trill, flexibility and skill in managing the big registral shifts, coloratura in Act I and III, and surging power over heavy orchestration in Acts II, III and IV. It is often cast with very light lyric coloratura voices who are able to easily encompass the high notes, but then the rest of the role is usually left severely underpowered and musically ineffective.
Renée Fleming sings here the famous Act III scene in which Manon has arrived in high society and celebrates her climb to the top in music of outrageous swagger and glamour.

    MANON:
Je marche sur tous les chemins
    Aussi bien qu'une souveraine
On s'incline, on baise ma main,
    Ah!
    Obeissons quand leur
    voix appelle, aux tendres
    amours, toujours, toujours,
    toujours, tant que vous
    etes belle, usez sans les
    compter vos jours, tous vos
jours ! Profitons bien de la
    jeunesse, des jours qu'amene
    le printemps ; aimons, rions,
    chantons sans cesse, nous
n'avons encor que vingt ans !
    BRETIGNY et JEUNES GENS
Profitons bien de la jeunesse !
    MANON
    Profitons bien de la jeunesse,
    aimons, rions, chantons
    sans cesse, nous n'avons
encor que vingt ans ! Ah ! Ah !
    JEUNES GENS
Profitons bien de la jeunesse !
    Rions ! Ah ! Ah !
    MANON
Le coeur, Mias! le plus fidele,
    oublie en un jour l'amour,
    l'amour, et la jeunesse
    ouvrant son aile a disparu
    sans retour, sans retour.
    Profitons bien de la jeunesse,
bien courte, helas ! est le
    printemps !
    Aimons, chantons, rions
    sans cesse, nous n'aurons
    pas toujours vingt ans !
    JEUNES GENS
Profitons bien de la jeunesse !
    MANON
Profitons bien de la jeunesse !
    Aimons, chantons,
    rions sans cesse,
profitons bien de nos vingt ans !
    Ah ! Ah !
    JEUNES GENS
Profitons bien de la jeunesse !
    Rions ! Ah ! Ah !
    ENGLISH
    MANON:
    I go everywhere,
    the equal of any sovereign;
people bow, they kiss my hand,
because I am a queen by my lovely looks!
    I am queen!
    My horses race me about;
seeing the boldness of my life,
    highly placed people come
    forward with their hats off;
I am beautiful, I am happy!
All around me everything should flower!
I go to everything that attracts me!
And if ever Manon should die,
    she would die my friends,
    in a burst of laughter...
    Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
    BRETIGNY, YOUNG NOBLEMEN
    Bravo! Bravo! Manon! Bravo!
    MANON
    Obey when their voices are
    calling, beckoning us to tender
    loves, always, always, always;
as long as you are beautiful,
    use up your days without
counting them, all of your days!
    Let's take advantage of youth,
    days that spring provides;
    let's love, laugh, and sing
    without stopping, while we're
    still only twenty!
    BRETIGNY, YOUNG MEN
Let's take full advantage of our youth!
    MANON
Let's take full advantage of our youth,
    let's love, laugh, and
    sing without stopping while
we're still only twenty! Ha! Ha!
    YOUNG MEN
Let's take full advantage of our youth!
    Let's laugh! Ha! Ha!
    MANON
    Even the most faithful heart,
alas, forgets love in a day, love,
    and youth, spreading its wings
    to flyaway, disappears, never
    to return, never to return.
    Let's take full advantage of
    our youth, the springtime
    season, alas, is very short!
    Let's love, sing, and laugh
    without stopping, we won't
    be twenty forever!
    YOUNG MEN
Let's take full advantage of our youth!
    MANON
Let's take full advantage of our youth!
    Let's love, sing,
    and laugh without stopping.
    Let's take advantage of
    being twenty! Ha! Ha!
    YOUNG MEN
Let's take full advantage of our youth!
    Let's laugh! Ha! Ha!

Oh how wonderful to wake up to! Thank you so much for posting. This is my second favourite aria with Ms. Fleming, the other being D’amore al... from Armida. I love the freedom she takes... I mean the freedom she takes in doing things even when it is maybe not the conventional way. Her jazz influences really does not bother me but makes her unique. 😍🎶😍 I also very much appreciate the things you write with your posts. Ms. Fleming is truly one of the Greats. Saw her in LA last Tuesday and she can still sing beautifully and effectively. One chestnote in Song to the Moon hit my chest so hard I started to cry. It really chocked me! It was heaven!🎶😢❤️❤️❤️😍 Greetings from Sweden!

chaan280 glad you enjoyed the post!
Fleming always added an extra degree of difficulty to the most demanding arias to show she was singing with a surplus - the feeling of soaring freedom that results is its own kind of virtuosity which is one of the many reasons she has so many fans - as I always like to say, true beauty is on the edge of disaster.
Someone truly great in any medium is dancing the line between order and chaos, one foot in tradition, training and technique, and one foot in improvisational freedom, reactive and open to the moment, pushing the boundaries of what has come before. It's the same with composers, painters, even gymnasts - and the secret as to why we find such performances so fascinating is that it really applies to all human action in any sphere, it's just that artists perform it publicly with enormous risk.
Anyway, thanks for your lovely comment - I will be posting more from the same performance over the coming days.

chaan280 agreed also that the Armida aria in the 1993 live account is simply astonishing. It was one of the first things I heard her in and I was just amazed. The Armida finale is posted on this channel which is also amazing (high G4 and G#4 in chest plus amazing coloratura). Glad you also adore the chest register - a miracle of a voice!

Great moments of opera Thanks a million for the both informative and well-articulated answer. I am a novice in the world of opera. Used to gasp in front of the tv when I was a child whenever there was an opera on and just recently have come back to it very much through the Met Live Showings in our small theatre near by. After having seen Der Rosenkavalier last spring I have become addicted to a daily dosage of Renées singing and I am learning more and more about this artform which enriches the experience a great deal. I truely get what you mean by balancing on the edge and how it gives the that extra thrill. When Renée plays safe it is okay though because I really enjoy her beautiful voice even in i lullaby which she sang in LA. A lullaby I have sung for my own four children. Thanks again!

chaan280 you're welcome. It's an amazing journey. I still need my daily Fleming after almost decade! Not many people talk about opera in the terms above, but hopefully I can add something back to the opera world that has given me so much - I'm an opera director too, so hopefully one day I'll be at the big houses!
