I don't ever want that thing near me. *Shivers* I think it's a phobia...
As you say Jim, those tentacles are mesmerizing!
Good stuff!
Thanks, Nigel. Yes, it's one of the few kites that looks equally fascinating from the front or back, the latter being where you get the best view of the tentacles.
Those Octapus kites always make a dramatic sight in the sky, They are a staple at Kite festivals and when the wind drops a little and their tenticals trail on the ground they magnetic to children, they love playing with the tenticals even if the kite flyer doesn't appreciate their attension.
This is not, of course, the PL version most often seen at the bigger festivals, Ian - no way could I afford to buy one of them. This may not be made to the same standard, and is a different concept, but it flies well and looks great. And as you say, children love it when it's low to the ground.
I have seen varying sizes of Octapus kite at festivals and considering that most of them i have seen have been flown by private individuals then i'd guess they are the same standard and price range as your Octapus, Looking on the Emma Kites website i think their Octapus kites look the likely source of the ones i see at festivals.
You're probably right, Ian. The PL ones seem to dominate at the major festivals in America and Asia, but for more "normal" people and events, these ones are much more appropriate and affordable.
As someone who has a fear of massive things. I want that thing as far away from me as possible lmfao
Wow ! That's very long tentacles Jim.
You forgot to remind your fans where we can get it.
I bought this from City of Smiling Angels on AliExpress, and got good service. But that site often gives very bad service, with lack of communication and delays in posting, so I don't like to recommend it. If you order from there, you may be lucky, or you may not! Kites similar to this are also available in different colours from Emma Kites website, where service is much more reliable.
Love those eyes. make a big difference.
Looks like I need to pull out the sewing machine and add some pupils to my 75ft from Emma Kites,
I just used a marker pen, and it looks good and will probably last well.
Wow, Simple idea. I will consider it. Going to open it kite up anyway to add attachment point and support to allow the octopus to be attached to a lifter. Flying space is limited here in the desert (Las Vegas). I can fly a more kites when attached as a train.
I thought those are boobs.
Well, how much does these Kites Costs and from where to buy
Jim, this is another great video.
Glad you think so! I made that one quite a while ago, and I must fly that kite again soon.
FWLIW: This kite's 'layout'[?] would make a good pattern for building a kite that looks like one of those {flying whatever things} from THE MATRIX movies.
That is the *first thing* I thought of when seeing the rear views of this kite, starting at around 1:00 in this vid
Oh no I am getting sucked in. I want one too! Liked the sight of the two together. No flying yet for me. Its now raining for a few days.
Kite flying DownUnder.... Carl Gillard its going to rain here untill saturday
You need one of these, Carl. Ownership of one will be a condition of admission to our beach in future.
Hi Jim, I have a question. I just received my 15m octopus and have a 500 yo yo line but have no idea how to attach the line to the kite. The strings attached to the kite are in like a big loop braid and am clueless on what to do
The only way I ever tie a line to a kite is with a larkshead knot. See my video "How to tie a line easily to any kite."
ua-cam.com/video/s9isfI52rOs/v-deo.html
Great stuff Jim, I hope to get one one day.
I'm sure you will, Graham. A lot easier than making your own - all those tentacles must take a lot of sewing, plus sewing the suckers on to the tentacles!
I have two 8m Octopus kites, wish I had one of these! I would settle for a 15m octopus.
Yes, the 23m one looks a lot more impressive and also flies better.
I bought it from the City of Smiling Angels store on AliExpress. I've bought a lot there in the past few years, but the service ranges from good to non-existent, so I wish you luck if you order.
Pretty! What type of line/reel do you use? Not sure what weight line to purchase!
Hi Julia. I use the ordinary plastic hoop spools for all my lines. I fly this kite on 300lb braided dacron line.
It looks like an alien if a person didn't see huge kite on a regular basis I'm sure they would be terrified lol
Yes, it does look a bit spooky.
Just bought this bad boy, went all out. My first kite, how did you attach the string to the kite? Should I use one of those hooks or physically knot it to the line.
Have a look at this: ua-cam.com/video/eHDNyYZrgDk/v-deo.html . I hope you have a lot of fun with your kite.
I love that kite. I have one yelow Oktopus by my self .🤣🤣🤣
Octopus are good kites.
nice big one..Jim..:) Those eyes look really good too.
The eyes looked a bit strange before I added the pupils, but they're good now.
sure do...more like a real octopus.
I got my today 15 meters long excited also have Huge Cobra kite 40 meters
Robert Hernandez where did you get the giant cobra?
Hi, can you help me? I also bought a 23m octopus kite. When it arrived, the main cord that attatches all the other strings was braided half way. Was that just for delivery purposes do you think, so it wouldn't get tangled? Should I unbraid it?
Thanks for your time.
Hi Christine, you are right in your supposition. The line will have been daisy-chained to avoid tangles, and you need to undo it before flying. See Premier Kites' video about making a daisy-chain here: ua-cam.com/video/z2QGRxcD1xY/v-deo.html . Look also for my video on "How to tie a line to a kite", which may be helpful. I hope you have good line. Braided dacron in 300lb strength is best for that kite. I hope you have a lot of fun with your kite - it's a great item.
The 75 footer's are great aren't they!
They are, Bill, and a lot more impressive and stable than the smaller ones.
So cool, but… ugh, the kite gives me the heebie jeebies! How hard are they to control?
Not hard at all, really.
Hi Jim
Years ago i used to tie up the bridle lines of my Peter Lynn Peel to stop it from getting tangled as there were a huge amount of lines.
I can't remember the looping method that i used to do ( Do you know what it is called ) And have you got a tutorial on how to do it?
I used to do it very easily. You and Peter do it on your 23m Octopus.
It's called a daisy-chain, Rod. I haven't made a video on it, but there's one on Premier Kites' UA-cam channel somewhere.
Thanks Jim - I found the link.
I can imagine those strings are a nightmare to get tangled
Not really. If you are reasonable careful there's no problem, and I've never had a tangle with them.
I wonder, how do you fly such big kites withouth being dragged off the ground?
I guess I'm just heavy enough that they can't lift me! But actually none of them is too strong-pulling unless I fly in very strong wind. I had a few kites that were a bit too strong for me, but have sold them now.
You should have an octopusday and you could fly all of your octopus kites.
That is planned, and will happen when we get some suitable wind - no idea when that will be as there's not much wind at all most days at the moment.
Tentacle-tastic - love it.
It's good, David - I just wish the supplier was more dependable, although this time her service was surprisingly fast!
I'm torn between the 14M/45ft or 23M/75Ft version of the Octopus kite from Emma Kites? I'm also struggling between which color. They all look so amazing on their website? HELP!!??
Of the two, I'd buy the 23m one for sure, but now the newer octopuses are available I'd choose one of them, such as this: www.aliexpress.com/item/4000767878237.html?gps-id=pcStoreLeaderboard&scm=1007.22922.122102.0&scm_id=1007.22922.122102.0&scm-url=1007.22922.122102.0&pvid=634702b1-fe4e-4ba4-9a9e-6c485ba82ae2&spm=a2g0o.store_home.smartLeaderboard_819224027.4000767878237
@@JimNicholls - Thank you!! I LOVE the newer octopuses, but I don't see anything larger than 18m in the new version. Am I just missing a larger model?
They were originally sold as 10m and 18m sizes, but were actually built bigger. The smaller one I think is now sold as 13m, and I thought the larger one had been relabelled as 20m. It is, anyway, a big kite and compares well to the 23m older one as it has a better appearance and much better tentacles. If you inquire at the Kaixuan Kite store, I think they also do a 28m version by request, but for me the 20m is quite enough to handle. Take a look at this video: ua-cam.com/video/zNk5_InTJto/v-deo.html .
What reel, line strength, and line length do you recommend?
I use 300lb braided dacron line. The length depends on how high you want to fly, bearing in mind that kites fly at a non-vertical angle and in the case of the octopus a fairly low angle. My lines are all 250 feet, which I find adequate for my needs.
@@JimNicholls Thanks!
People will think this like an alien invasion
It does look a bit like that.
Jim - 23M octopus or 16M trilobite - if you could only pick one - which one and why?
I'd probably go for the Octopus if I didn't already have it, as it's such a useful kite and I have other, smaller, Trilobites. The Octopus is very easy to fly, and will cope with strong wind without pulling too hard, as well as lesser breezes. The Trilobite 16 is great, and I wouldn't want to be without it, but it doesn't get as much use as the Octopus and pulls very hard when the wind gets up.
@@JimNicholls thanks for the reply. Octopus is actually cheaper as well it seems with free shipping to the USA. Is it difficult to get in and out of it's bag? Is the bag enormous?
Bag is a lot bigger than the Trilobite's. Packing it away is not too bad. I just fold up the head and start rolling the tentacles around it, then after I've done a bit I stuff it into the bag and then just continue stuffing the tentacles in. I usually tie the end of the tentacles together just to make it easier to find them when taking it out next time. It is not as much trouble as some kites. The Trilobite is easier, although it can be a problem getting all the air out. It is much lighter and with the smaller bag is a lot easier to transport.
@@JimNicholls good info. Thank you.
Wow!
It is quite impressive - especially when we have both of them flying together.
Maybe I will upgrade from my 8m one to this later. :D
There's certainly a lot of difference. The big one actually flies a lot better, but of course needs a bit more handling, particularly when packing up. It's a great kite to have.
I tried (and failed) to launch my new 23M octopus today. Wind was 12-15 or so. Held the front open to let it fill. The body filled and the tentacles mostly filled up, but the kite never took off. Not sure what I did wrong.
I've no idea why it didn't fly for you. If there's enough wind, this kite is always eager to fly. Maybe try a long-line launch next time - lay out about 50 feet or more of line, anchor the reel end to something solid, tie the kite on the other end and, with the line tight, hold the kite open and it should lift up as soon as it's full of air. Just watch out for the bridle lines and don't go up with it!
@@JimNicholls Thanks Jim. I'll try to get it on video next time.
Woo Hoo, I finally got it up today. No, no, that doesn't sound right at all. I finally got the Octopus to fly. I think the problem was I wasn't holding the bridle until if started to lift on it's own. Do you have any problems keeping this rather complicated bridle from tangling? I can straighten all the lines of mine all out until I get within 4" or so of the free end of the bridle and then it goes every which way - all twisted up. I'm not sure if it was ever totally untwisted or if it has gotten worse through daisy chaining and such.
Entitled Parent be like, “WHO THE F IS FLYING THIS THING? I’ll SUE THEM FOR SCARING MY CHILD!”
Or, (Walks up to person with giant octopus kite) “Excuse me sir, can u let my son borrow this cool looking kite?”
EK : I want is mommy, I want it!
You : this cost a lot so, no
EM : YOU SON OF A B! I AM GONNA CALL THE COPS ON U!
It's certainly a kite that makes a big impact.
Compared to a fully grown man, how big is it!
It's as long as more than 12 men. As I said, it measures 23 metres (75 feet).
@@JimNicholls :OO
Jim, i'be been trying to get a good sense of the 23m size vs. 30m. If i'm not mistaken the 30m kites don't appear as big as this one: m.ua-cam.com/video/hwaMFqTI4fY/v-deo.html. Can you tell by looking if this one is that much bigger? Looks a lot bigger than 30m. Quite a kite.
Michael, in one of the replies to comments on that video, the guy suggests that it's about 50m long - no idea how accurate that is, but it certainly looks bigger than the ones that Peter and I have which are both 23m long. I'm quite happy with mine, and wouldn't bother going for anything bigger.
Jim Nicholls yes. Saw that, but I can't find anyone who will confirm it's anything over 30m. 30m kite is 12ft wide. That does look wider than 12 ft. Like yours. Hard to get a sense of the size. But then I have Rieleit Foil, so it must be close to that 75ft. Wonder where one can find on that's 50m. That kite is impressive. Thanks again Jim.
Its like slendermans tentelces
I have same one!Price is very friendly but the material is too bad
The material on mine seems fine. My friend's one has flown many times, and has no problems. For the price, I think it's very good value.
They look amazing. Are these hard to assemble and do they need a large / long carry case? The suckers on the tentacles look solid orange in the photos on the ali express site. Whereas yours look more 3-d...
No assembly is needed, just take it out of the bag and launch it. The bag is fairly big, but will fit easily in a car for transport. The suckers are 3D in this size Octopus, but not in the smaller sizes.
What is the bag color? Is it black and light green? And has chinese characters on it?
Yes.
What is this song..?
It's called "Go not gently" and is in the UA-cam audio library.
@@JimNicholls Thank you so much! I was wondering because I wanted to use it as a song for my speedpaints!
I want to buy. Saureshtra kite clube Rajkot
You can buy it here: www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002959004857.html?spm=a2g0s.8937460.0.0.2f4f2e0eDa2GP7 .
Hi Jim, i was recently corresponding on Michael K Sherman on the 50m walk-in-sky octopus, just to share with ya....here's a good vid on youku
v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMzI1ODIzNTY0.html?spm=a2h0j.8191423.module_basic_relation.5~5!2~5~5!3~5~5~A
(can almost tell the size diff between a 30 and a 50 by the tentacles' slow-mo motion. 23m vs 50m, definitely can tell)
I am wondering if you have any idea on how to fix a "lifter line" on the top of the octopus kite, like the one found on kite laundry kites? I'd like to fix one on the octopus as i am intending to use the octopus as a laundry item, main bridle might be flown seperately on another reel or perhaps fixed to the main line. I'd need all the help i can get as the winds here aren't usually very strong. From what i know, the Octopus needs BS 3 winds, and from what i have briefly played with the squid laundry, i'd need that lifter line help so that at least it can be lifted up at least 10m (i could manually pull it up via the tentacles) and "catch" some higher winds like what i have been doing with the squid. Either that or if i am flying in a big field, i'd just assemble everything and then get the Trilobite to lift off first pulling everything up and hoping everything else inflate after 5 mins. =) Well, murphy's law, that might not happen i guess.
Basically i would like to fly the follow together, from bottom to top.... 4.5m turbine, 10m squid, 15m octopus, Trilobite 32. =)
PS. This is the exact same spot that i was flying the trilobite 32, 4.5m turbine and 10m squid. That's a 60m octopus in the vid, oh i think 2 pilots were stacked to lift the octopus. ua-cam.com/video/LY9Et5pcEwM/v-deo.html
On the left is Marina Barrage, where i first flew the trilobite 32.
I've never tried flying one of the Chinese octopus kites as line laundry and don't really have any ideas. I guess just sewing a strong tab to the top centre of the head and adding a line might work. The Peter Lynn octopuses all fly as line laundry, so it must be possible to adapt the others, I guess.
I would certainly have the main bridle on a separate line, not on the line of the lifter.
Thank you for the info. I just learnt that the walk-in-sky factory would be able to sew on a tab at the top for me. That includes other of their kites as well.
Tutorial cara buatnya om
I don't know how to make it. I bought it from China.
