Its Ten pm.just Finished My 8 Hour shift, Bout To Board The Bus For A 1 N A Half Hour trip, And I See A New VI From Turbo tom! Can't wait to watch on my long trip home!!!! I'm Addicted lol
Have you ever considered quitting all you do and just dedicate time for creation of these incredible videos? Joking apart, keep up the amazing job and that amazing personality of yours!
After watching this video last week, I went to the home improvement store and bought some washers for my '92 Lancer (same gen. as your old Turbo Mirage). Great improvement. Shifting a quite a bit louder, but it's worth it. Btw. one of my first mods on the Lancer was to swap the shift knob to the leather one, you put in as well. It's fantastic :) Keep up the great videos!
Every time a new TTG video comes out I hook up my laptop to the big screen to watch the awesomeness in 1080p. Looking forward to the next video Tom, great job.
Great video, Tom! Thoroughly enjoyable as always, and I really dug the music for this one, the kind of slower, fuzzy groove during the cable change (around 4:00) and then later during the filter change. Looking forward to the next one!
Thank you sir! I appreciate the kind words and am glad that some folks notice the music, I probably put as much time into it as I do editing/videoing/etc!
Congratulations on another really well made film, really good music choice, voice over is spot on as always! just wished you had time to do more often! High-five from Brazil!
Thank you my friend and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I had a fun time making the music for this one, I was trying out my drum pad app on my iPad mini for the first time. I wish I could make videos more often too, believe me! Tell everyone in Brazil I said Hi if you haven't already. :-D
Of all the DSMs I've owned, and all the horsepower aside, I swear the single best modification I ever made was installing a Symborski shifter bushing kit. If you've never replaced those crap bushings, you just can't appreciate how massive a difference it makes in how driving the car feels every day.
Awesome video Tom! And once again i love the music you've made for the video! I like how you mix in classic rock, electronic, and i even noticed a little trap this time. Very cool! I'm currently an automotive maintenance tech student in St. Louis and your garage is an inspiration to what i hope mine will be one day. Thanks for the upload!
Thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you also for the kind words about the music - I was tinkering around with my iPad mini drum pad apps and the results came out better than I hoped. Have a good one and best of luck to you and your career!
nice video tom. I replaced the 6 shifter bushings in my 94 talon and put in the 4 solid shifter base bushings in last weekend, makes a huge difference.
the vr-4 was a little of a forgotten car, but it seems that people finally recognize what great car it actually is. it was the base for the past and current evo's. the only galant with AWD
I honestly love your videos! Can't wait to see more. BTW the funny parts in all of your videos are refreshing, which makes me say that YOU Sir are very creative! My best regards, Keep Up The Great Work :)
Looks exactally like a 3000GT VR4 shifter, Just installed bushings on my 3000. Same wonkyness as a dsm or galant. The 3SX.com kit also includes brass ones to replace the rubber cable ends on the trans.
I aspire to get my mechanical skill set as high as yours someday! You seem to be able to do just about anything car related! Did you go to Technical School for Automotive if you don't mind me asking? This is such great work. I mean you made that VR-4 look like a brand new car inside and out! Can't wait for the next episode, and to see if you make this car as fast as your 1st gen DSM! :]
JobeMinacum Hi Jobe and thank you again for the kind words! I did waaay back in the day, but learned the most from growing up in my Dad's service station alongside car mechanics. These were your cagey, old school mechanics who were extremely skilled and were very hard workers. They could easily work circles around me still to this day. Thanks again and stay tuned for lots of fun stuff!
Saw ur engine bay cleaning. Video It's 2am right now in Dallas after I saw ur vid I subscribe. And wanted to go to my garage clean my 91 camaro rs engine bay lol
Great vid as usual Tom. Keep up the great work. Subscribed some months ago after watching a jafromobile video. Yes I was looking at Mitsu stuff. So glad I found you two. LoL :-) From Trinidad, Caribbean
Hello, Tom. Your video Project Street Sleeper Part 8: Air & Fuel Upgrades adapter you have made on the MAF 9 Evo Galant on how to do this please tell me. Mauger has a wiring diagram or addresses on the Internet where to look.
Awesome Video Tom! This will help tons when I pull the motor from my 2G. I can use these tips and it will be super simple as there will not be a motor in my way. Also any recommendations on companies that sell great prebuilt blocks? Only one I know of is DSM Graveyard
Thank you and I'm glad I can help! Good luck with your project and there are a few vendors still selling built blocks, just check the vendor marketplace on the dsm forums. See ya!
Excellent vid and work, as always! Question: your trick with the washers instead of the rubber mounts, is it really ok to put metal-on-metal where rubber was used? Wouldn't it become a source of corrosion in the future?
Thank you! The rubber mounts simply dampen vibration from the chassis and shifter mechanism working to help with NVH inside the cabin. With solid mounts, there is some noise but the shift feel is much more direct. All of the surfaces are coated with some sort of protection and inside the cabin, so it would take some pretty crazy conditions to create corrosion I would imagine.
The shifter thing reminds me of the Andy Griffith Show when barney bought that car and the center of the steering wheel was coming out at him. I wounder how many people even know what im talking about?
Haha! All of that old stuff is in the back of my head somewhere, which is probably where all of this silly stuff comes from when I start up the old camcorder. :-D
Tom's Turbo Garage Look at this eclipse GSX www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?zip=43235&endYear=1999&modelCode1=ECLIP&showcaseOwnerId=0&startYear=1995&makeCode1=MIT&firstRecord=26&searchRadius=0&showcaseListingId=0&mmt=%5BMIT%5BECLIP%5B%5D%5D%5B%5D%5D&listingId=361188510&Log=0
just suscribed you and i love your videos and i read a comment about you saying you watch mcm i am a fan of them as well well i got a 2000 galant working on right now trying to get back in shape just finished rebuilt the engine myself (btw im 16 lol)
Hi there and good to meet you! Great to hear that you're wrenching at a young age and I wish you the best of luck with your Galant! I bet it'll be MAAAAD when you're done with it. :-D
When the fuel filter is in the car and you're looking down on it, which way do you turn the wrench on the bottom fuel line fitting? I assume counter clockwise.... **EDIT** Nevermind, clockwise looking down on it. Got it!
I had the same shifter problem with my 94 accord but it was the oil for whatever reason the oil was extra sticky I change it with Honda mtf and it was all good after that :) Ohh and the working on old cars thing yea always setbacks I hate that 5 min job turn into all day job lol
Haha, thanks! I don't want to be a buzzkill, but I am not going to build another monster like I did with the Talon. I may have another 600+hp car someday, but when I do it's going to have high end brakes/chassis/suspension/etc. to handle it.
I have a couple questions about cruise control and was wondering if you may try to help me out. I can post them here or PM if you prefer (it may get long winded). Thanks for the great videos!
Hi there, just post them on here or my facbook page. I've been getting lots of messages and it's tough to catch up, but I'll do my best to respond quickly. That said, I find most questions I get can be answered with some Google searching.
Been searching google for days now......no luck. I want to install Speedhut gauges (GPS speedo, matching Tach, etc) in my daily driver and want to keep the cruise control function fully operable. Spoke with Speedhut and they confirmed they can add a signal out wire to provide speed info to other systems (once you remove the 1g speedo, the VSS Reed switch goes with it). My question is how/where do you add this input to get it to the ECU, Cruise motor, etc to keep the Cruise Control operational? Thanks in advance.
Hi Tom, is there a way to light up my warning lights on the gauges? I need to know which ones are blown out without removing and testing each one. When I start the car, only the Check Engine icon lights up and then goes out.
Hi Richard, yes I sold it to a local DSM'er as a rolling chassis and have sold the parts that I didn't need. You can read more about it here if you'd like: talon.turbomirage.com/talon_goodbye.html
Tom's Turbo Garage Dont wanna sound like a noob but what am I looking for in that section xD also, these parts, how do you even get them... My local australian mitsubishi dealer wants $50 for fking caliper bolts, dont even want to imagine what theyd want for shifter linkages
Lucky u.... I hope someday I own an evo 0.... I have a 91 talon awd atthemoment but still need ideas on building it up ..your videos are inspiring ...me and my friends learn a lot from most of your vids (even tho they don't like DSM) they like the work and restoration you've done to the gvr4... Did u ever timed it Tom??
Dave Touchh Thanks again Dave and I'm glad I can help! Thank you for spreading the word to your friends too. I did do a performance test in this video. Project Street Sleeper Update and Performance Test
Galants are getting harder and harder to find that is why I got a 91' talon tsi pics to follow. The Galants I did find were heavily moded or have been siting for way too long. When did you get you mechanical abilities? Nice garage oops man cave
Thanks man! That's true, they are fairly hard to find in unmolested condition. Enjoy your Talon, they are great fun too! I grew up in a service station around mechanics and learned lots from them. I also received a bit of training, but that was a looong time ago!
Doing a 60K service on the last 3000GT VR4 ever built. No documentation to know when or if it was ever done so she is under the knife. Timing belt, water pump, and a slew of support parts. All four O2 sensors, hoses, idler pulleys, hydraulic tensioner, etc. So, do you have any documentation for these services?
Tom's Turbo Garage I think I would have also mentioned that you must replace the copper crush washers on both sides of the fuel filter lines. They are not reusable.
I think I originally misunderstood your question. You were looking for info about maintaining your 3000GT. Just get a service manual and it will include every step. As for the crush washers, I don't intend for my videos to be step-by-step tutorials, more like a video build diary with enough detail to give you an idea of what each job entailed. These videos would be hours long if I went to that level of detail, and I would have gone insane by now. :-D
For a 2g Eclipse GST. Do I need to order the 2g GS Non cruise cable? That is all the dealership could find for cruise control delete. Is this right? Thanks,
I'm feeling traces of engine oil on my water pipe after the heater inlet which crawls down all the way to the lower radiator hose. I can't see where it's coming from. Anybody have a clue? I'm hard pressed to see oil on the engine seals. Radiator coolant is free from oil contamination.
Hi Gino, you can use an oil dye to find the leak, as it can be very difficult in an older engine like these. It could be anything from a cam angle sensor o-ring, to valve cover gasket, to the exhaust stud that runs into an oil galley, or about a handful of other sources. Good luck!
Mike Ferrante Hi Mike, it's not an issue for the Miata as it uses a shifter that mounts directly into the transmission and does not use actuator cables like the Mitsu. That said, some little items in the Miata shifter assembly can wear out over time, check the miata.net garage for more info on that. Good luck!
Thanks, you're the man. I want to try it out as my front motor mount is always getting ripped in 1 month. May I ask what is the cause? Should I change the back as well? Does it have something to do making the front ripped so easily? I've already changed 2 front motor mounts.
Ivan Rubio You're welcome Ivan! It shouldn't happen this frequently, it is possible that one or all of the other mounts are damaged too. I would start by checking them all out. Good luck!
My plan for now is to put the chopping board till I complete all four. It's very annoying that you are idling the car and you hear the squeek sound of the metal rubbing together. I got the car a year ago and it's been always this way, I had no history of the other mounts so I'm going to change them all. I've been a shade tree mechanic after a month I got the car, mechanics here are complete rip off and didn't solve problems of the car. T_T
Hi there! Yes, replacement parts are getting harder to find. You should have some luck with a good salvage yard though. They can usually source parts from other salvages. Good luck!
Hi Anthony, I had a little training here and there but most of my education came from growing up around mechanics and then later on just enjoying trying new power adding mods. You just start small and before you know it, your confident doing all sorts of stuff that seemed impossible just a few years back. Have fun wrenching!
Believe it or not, by watching your videos, I slowly learned a lot about fixing and repairing cars. So helpful. Thanks Tom.
You're welcome sir, glad to hear that!
These VR-4 restoration videos are so satisfying to watch, I'm going to take a lesson from you and take better care of my cars!
Thank you Cameron, I'm glad you enjoy them!

Thanks for sharing that Alexandros! I appreciate the support very much and am glad you enjoy watching them!
My favorite part of Top Gear and all of those shows is not the super cars, but when they take ordinary cars and mess with them! Love it!
I totally agree!
Have you ever considered quitting all you do and just dedicate time for creation of these incredible videos? Joking apart, keep up the amazing job and that amazing personality of yours!
Thank you for the very kind words and I really do wish I could make videos for a living!
Very neat piece of kit! I love to see old Limited Edition cars like your VR-4, brought back to life. One lucky miss number 1444!
Thank you sir, glad you enjoyed the video!

Right, Tom is back and right on, a very good video. And i learned something, yup even some tricks can be used on my Yamaha Majesty.
Thank you Joppie and glad I can help!
I don't see how I could ever dislike one of your videos...it's nothing but amazingly good stuff! :D
Thank you man!

I will be getting a DSM. I am hooked after watching your videos!
Good luck man!
Always interesting to see other car manufacturers factory maintenance manuals, looks like Mitsubishi do a good job on them!
the vr-4 was a little of a forgotten car, but it seems that people finally recognize what great car it actually is. it was the base for the past and current evo's. the only galant with AWD
I just picked one up, so happy I did. It's a blast.

Haha, glad I can help man!
Great video, your video inspired me to maintain my car
Nice job tom! Can't wait to see the galant with some upgrades.
Thank you Christian!
Just changed a fuel filter at work on some Malibu and the fuel filter was worse than that... Great video I need to do that cruise control delete!
Wow, amazing that cars can even run with clogged old filters like that. Thanks man!
thank you so much for this, I have my own 1992 galant too I learned a lot from this... good job
Thank you Ramil and I'm glad you found the video helpful!
Another great video Tom! I have a Lancer that I've done a ton of work to, so you need to get that Evolution soon!!
Thank you and enjoy your Lancer!
wow....I never seen a fuel filter with such dirty gas. that car must run like a new car after that fix/find. good stuff
Oh I know, it was terrible! There are always little surprises like this, even with well maintained cars like this one.
As usual, awesome video and leaves me wanting more. I sure hope the next video comes a bit quicker. I'm a fiend for this stuff!
Thank you Steven, glad you enjoy them!
I honestly love your videos! Can't wait to see more. BTW the funny parts in all of your videos are refreshing, which makes me say that YOU Sir are very creative! My best regards, Keep Up The Great Work :)

Love this show. Absolutely awesome work!!!
Thank you sir!
Hey Tom, could you possible do a Toolbox tour? That is a video that I would LOVE to see from you!
Thank you for the suggestion, I'll likely do that in the future!

Kristoffer Lilja Thanks man, well cars stay in pretty good shape here in the south, that and lots of patience.

Haha, thanks Nick!
if you don't mind me asking, do you think you'd ever do a Honda build or anything like that? it'd be really awesome for you to do
Another awesome video
Thank you!

Oh man......I miss my 1992 Galant VR-4.
Is it time to go on the hunt for one? ;-D
Tom's Turbo Garage its not easy to find a good condition VR4 now.

Samuel Wong Mmm, that is nice! I love that color combo too. Big bucks for a DSM, but a very nice example and worth it I'm sure. Thanks for sharing.
Samuel Wong That's very true. It takes tons of patience.
just suscribed you and i love your videos
and i read a comment about you saying you watch mcm i am a fan of them as well
well i got a 2000 galant working on right now trying to get back in shape just finished rebuilt the engine myself (btw im 16 lol)
Hi there and good to meet you! Great to hear that you're wrenching at a young age and I wish you the best of luck with your Galant! I bet it'll be MAAAAD when you're done with it. :-D
Great shifter testing :)
Do you have helpful tips for trouble with the 1.8 electronic carburettor?
When the fuel filter is in the car and you're looking down on it, which way do you turn the wrench on the bottom fuel line fitting? I assume counter clockwise....
**EDIT** Nevermind, clockwise looking down on it. Got it!
Sorry man, just saw this! I can't tell you how many times I say lefty loosie / righty tightie in my head when working on stuff. :-D
i learned about shifter bushings and what they actually do....haha thanks...
Cool man, glad I can help!
I had the same shifter problem with my 94 accord but it was the oil for whatever reason the oil was extra sticky I change it with Honda mtf and it was all good after that :) Ohh and the working on old cars thing yea always setbacks I hate that 5 min job turn into all day job lol
Good to know Colin. Old trans oil can cause issues as well. What's worse than having a big long to do list and spending forever on an old stuck part?!
whats worse than that..not finding a replacement part for the one u just broke lol
Tom, do you remember the size of the washer for the shifter bushing? I'm guessing 1inch in size and 5/16hole size
Hi Timothy, I'm afraid I don't. I just took a bushing/bolt with me to the hardware store and matched it all up.
Insta like!
Thank you Carlos!
cool vid....but now, officially begins the MANDATORY JOURNEY TO 600 HP !
Haha, thanks! I don't want to be a buzzkill, but I am not going to build another monster like I did with the Talon. I may have another 600+hp car someday, but when I do it's going to have high end brakes/chassis/suspension/etc. to handle it.
Hey tom can you have video for lancer dangan 1992 DOHC GTi ? I need assisten for remap my ecu unit on my car
love the video man:)
Thank you!
Are you able to send the link for the cruise control delete cable please

Are you parting out your talon? Saw some of your parts for sale on the dsmtuners classifieds.
Hi Richard, yes I sold it to a local DSM'er as a rolling chassis and have sold the parts that I didn't need. You can read more about it here if you'd like: talon.turbomirage.com/talon_goodbye.html

So, do you have any documentation for these services?
Stay tuned...

I think I would have also mentioned that you must replace the copper crush washers on both sides of the fuel filter lines.
I don't even own a Mitsubishi but this is a good vid
Thanks Brandon! I try to make the information applicable to most any vehicle, generally speaking.
Hi tom where can i order new shifter cables
whi you no instal the engine ls3 v8 in this galant mate
For a 2g Eclipse GST. Do I need to order the 2g GS Non cruise cable? That is all the dealership could find for cruise control delete. Is this right? Thanks,
Hmm, I would call a vendor like JNZ or search the forums for that one, I'm afraid I'm not sure.
Good luck!
these videos go by so fast
Thanks man, glad you enjoy them!
Btw, what's special with this version? it says limited edition?
Or the Vr-4 was Limited edition? :D
the VR4 was a homoligation rallycar for on the street, it was the only galant with AWD. so it was a limited edition
How’d you get those cables?
Video of the Miata coming up soon?
I wish! I sold it a couple years ago.
Hi, love sleepers, in the beginning of this video I saw the car with aftermarket radio then I saw a 2 DIN factory Mistubishi one. Did you replace it?
Hi Victor, yes I did replace the aftermarket stereo with the factory one in an earlier episode.
You do want it to look factory
Victor Rodriguez Definitely!
Lmao 8:18 I scared my dog laughing
Tom WHy to Reset ECU at galant VR4?
hey tom! that shifter bushing stiffness fix you did, is that an issue/fix for the miata too?
Mike Ferrante Hi Mike, it's not an issue for the Miata as it uses a shifter that mounts directly into the transmission and does not use actuator cables like the Mitsu. That said, some little items in the Miata shifter assembly can wear out over time, check the miata.net garage for more info on that. Good luck!
got it. should've known that haha thanks!
Hi, tom where you buy those oem parts....
Hi Jason, I get them from a variety of places, just check the DSMForums and look at the vendor for sale section.
Ok, tom your talon still with stock internals or you make a forged upgrade
Jason Sepúlveda No, not stock internals. Full details can be found here: talon.turbomirage.com
wooohoooo!!!!!
Thanks John, hope all is going well for you!
Hi Tom, what's the episode that you used chopping board in motor mounts? Thanks!
Hi Ivan, here ya go: Project Street Sleeper Clutch Upgrade - Part 2
Hi Tom! good day.. i have galant 1992 gti and i have a big problem with its air hose cleaner, can't find any replacement..i need your expert advise
Hi there! Yes, replacement parts are getting harder to find. You should have some luck with a good salvage yard though. They can usually source parts from other salvages. Good luck!
thanks Tom..
dhara mae dolino You're welcome! See ya.
Hi Tom, did you go to school to learn how to work on cars?
Hi Anthony, I had a little training here and there but most of my education came from growing up around mechanics and then later on just enjoying trying new power adding mods. You just start small and before you know it, your confident doing all sorts of stuff that seemed impossible just a few years back. Have fun wrenching!
Awesome thanks Tom
Quit your day job and make more video's!!
Haha, I wish I could, believe me!
Sneaky horsepower ? Maybe putting NOS and small turbo :P
You'll have to stay tuned Timo!
I will :)
timo vähäkuopus Haha, thank you!
Tom make me a battery tray like you did for your talon so I can use the 51r battery I'll PayPal the money
Thanks for the offer man, but it was just a one off. It can easily be reproduced if you or a buddy can MIG weld. Have a good one!
