    I want to answer some of your questions about Emperor Time because the anime unfortunately had to sacrifice some of the explanations that were given at this point in the manga in order to achieve that perfect single episode pacing.
    In the manga Kurapika's teacher makes a distinction between the proficiency and efficiency of a Nen user for the 6 types.
    When the Nen chart shows you that, for e.g. an Enhancer has 100% affinity in Enhancement, 80% in Transmutation / Emission, 60% in Manipulation / Conjuration, those percentages refer to BOTH proficiency and efficiency. So a Conjurer has both 60% proficiency and 60% efficiency in Enhancement.
    Proficiency refers to the skill level distribution, and it describes the extent that you are able to develop a Nen category at any given time based on your Nen type affinity. Alternatively, it can be visualized as how much you are able to get out of your learning. A Nen user can only get the most out of their learning with their innate type, whereas other categories always lag behind. The manga uses a video-game example: A level 10 Conjurer can learn Conjuration techniques up to level 10, but Enhancement techniques only up to level 6, because they have a proficiency of 60%. For a Conjurer to be able to use level 10 Enhancement techniques, they'd first have to level up their Conjuration to level ~17. "Level" here refers to the level of mastery of a given Nen type based on the depth of your individual training. In theory, you could train your innate type indefinitely (although there are obviously natural limits to how much someone can learn), but if you were to focus exclusively on types other than your own, you'd eventually cap at some point and be unable to go any further in your training until you trained your innate type some more first. Because of this, learning Nen types is a proportional affair. You have to improve what is closest to you first before you can raise your level on the outskirts as well. Kastro's error was that he learned things out of order and neglected his own type to make a convoluted technique.
    Efficiency refers to the effectiveness of a technique, i.e the force and accuracy of its effect. There is some ambiguity about whether the efficiency in performing specific techniques is static or dependent on your level of training of those techniques, but we know there's a fixed ceiling in overall efficiency based on your Nen type affinity that's normally impossible to surpass and is completely independent of training, and that's the concept that the efficiency percentage represents. For example, if a normal Conjurer were to spend 1,000 aura points on an Enhancer technique, due to the fact that they have 60% efficiency in Enhancement, they'd only get at most 60% of the effect regardless of how advanced or basic the technique is. They'd get the same result as an Enhancer spending 600 aura points on the exact same technique. If an Enhancer were to attack a Nen user with 600 aura, a fellow Enhancer could nullify the attack with another 600 aura's worth of enhanced defense, while a Conjurer would have to spend at least 1,000 aura to nullify the same attack. This is why in conventional battles, Enhancers usually get to bully everyone, and it's also why Kurapika initially wanted to be an Enhancer, seeing as it's the best category for conventional fighting. Vice versa, Enhancers would struggle much more with conjuring constructs than Kurapika does, even if they reached the same level of Conjuration that he has after extensively training their innate type first.
    Now, about Emperor Time. Emperor Time is Kurapika's Specialization ability when he activates his Scarlet Eyes. It grants him 100% efficiency in every Nen category while the ability is active, but it DOES NOT affect his proficiency percentages, which stay the same as when he is a Conjurer. So if Kurapika is a level 10 Conjurer (as an example), when he activates Emperor Time, his proficiency in Enhancement remains 60% and he is only able to use level 6 Enhancement techniques at most. The difference is that he can use those techniques with the same efficiency that an Enhancer would. They have the exact same effect as if an Enhancer had done them. For clarification, a normal level 10 Conjurer could use level 6 Enhancement techniques, but they'd be less powerful than an Enhancer doing them, because they only have 60% efficiency (whereas Kurapika has 100% efficiency when he uses Emperor Time).
    Emperor Time is not restricted to the Spiders, it's an ability that Kurapika can use against anyone. Since Specialization Nen is deeply tied to unique circumstances in one's life, it's clear that Emperor Time is only made possible by Kurapika's Kurta physiology affecting his Nen (which is why it activates when his eyes go scarlet). In other words, the Phantom Troupe are paying the price of making an enemy of someone with such a niche ethnic background. Now I know Emperor Time seems overpowered, but at the same time it's not exactly "wielding full control over every Nen category" as the anime presents. Rather it's getting the most out of the level of mastery that he has already reached in every category. He is not going to suddenly become a master of a category that he has not trained, but he will get 100% the effect of his training. You can view it as: Kurapika can play-act any type but with the skill tree that he developed as a Conjurer.
    Also, there are some costs as you may have guessed, although unfortunately the story doesn't get too much into that until the point after the anime is over.

    • @acmh7538
      @acmh7538 Рік тому +6

      Thanks a lot for this explanation, it was kind of a long read but worth it, I finally understand what Emperor Time entails. And so I have a question: you said "Emperor Time is the result of Kurapika's Kurta physiology affecting his Nen", does that mean that Kurapika didn't "choose" to develop Emperor Time as a technique? I thought that only becoming a Specialist was a consequence of his Kurta physiology, but that he chose Emperor Time as his Specialist special ability (and put a rather demanding condition on it), the same way that he's naturally a Conjurer, but he chose chains to be his Conjurer special ability.

    • @maricastefan219
      @maricastefan219 Рік тому +3

      @@acmh7538 Specialist abilities are fundamentally different from those of any other categories and both ability creation and training are very ambiguous for this type of Nen. For one, a Specialist cannot learn any other Specialist ability than their own. Kurapika couldn't have chosen to make Neon's fortune-telling ability at that point instead. It might be a different story if he had Neon's upbringing and personality. It's possible that Emperor Time subconsciously developed based on his desire to become an Enhancer rather than being in-built, which on second thought seems to fit very well with the canon since quite a lot of Specialist abilities fit this pattern. I edited my OP to leave some room for that.

    Kurapika's power is definitely OP as fuck. I don't know if Togashi planned this all along or if he realised along the road that Emperor Time was too strong but later (after the anime is already over hence why I'm addressing it now) he added an additional explanation about Emperor Time which clarifies how it works much better than you'll ever be told in the anime. I won't go into more detail in case you want to read the manga once the anime is over.
    As for Uvo, Kurapika didn't chose him just based on look, otherwise he'd have considered Franklin who looks even stronger physically. He got intel from Hisoka, he wanted to be sure he targeted the strongest member first. And Machi confirmed during Uvo's fight with the Shadow Beasts that Uvo was indeed the strongest in the troupe physically. So Kurapika is correct. If he can hold Uvo in his chains, considering they paralyse and force Zetsu, and if he can kill him with his bare hands, then he can do the same to any other troupe member once they're chained. None of them should be able to escape without outside interference or at most, a trap that they'd laid before getting captured.

    Though undeniably cool, this episode & Kurapika’s power in general are the only things in the series that really bother me.
    He’s too over-powered for someone this green with nen with anything but an immediately fatal condition.
    I’m sure, in the HXH world, thousands of ppl foster a similar burning hatred. The ones with talent can’t just become phantom troupe level.
    I wish that Kurapika had to use the chains smarter to even survive the smallest attack from Uvo. Like the first punch doesn’t shatter his arm, not because he is magically a super enhancer with emperor time, but because he wrapped the phantom troupe chain around his body to protect him from Uvo’s punches… the chain draining the extra nen from the hits, so they contain mostly only Uvo’s considerable physical strength by the time they land. Metaphorically, that would work as well - by chaining his fate to the Phantom Troupe’s demise, Kurapika has entrapped himself as well.
    His red eye emperor time that gives him most of the overwhelming power to fight here has nothing to do with the phantom troupe condition… he just needs to be angry enough his eyes turn red. Even Gon who is a 100% enhancer and similarly as green prob isn’t Uvo level as long as the series lasts… with an exception or two.

      I have to agree with this, Kurapika managed to learn all the basics of nen plus In and Gyo and 5 hatsu techniques in a ridiculous short time. He must be more talented than Gon and Killua. Heck, it took 6 months for Zushi just to use ten properly and he also is considered talented.

      @@Patrick-ko5wr yes he is more talented than gon and killua. Plus Gon and Killua spent time doing other stuff and didn't really have as much as a drive that kurapika did. Also Gon and Killua aren't even completely physically mature yet they're only 12, whereas kurapika is 17 so he's in his physical prime and probably learns much faster.

      A good way to express the disappointment of this fight, with the main stage taken by Kurapika's out of the blue and unjustified over-powered-ness. It feels more like a stretch in order to reach a too much of a predictable goal for HxH: have Kurapika win. "Well, it's kinda impossible so what do we do?" "Oh, I know, let's just make him an instant master of all categories when he's angry ....that should do it.' :))))))
      P.S. And this is coming from a person who actually enjoys OP characters. In this instance, it is such a miss.

      His Emperor Time actually does naturally tie into the Phantom Troupe condition. To avoid spoilers, however, you'd have to find that out through the current manga arc. And to be fair, Kurapika has the most intent to learn nen and have it be fully realized than the others.

    I don't like this episode, well this fight, except for the intriguing information we get on the power system & the most exquisite visual design precisely on Uvo's death.
    .
    People see this as some epitome of awesome from Kurapika, but it is in fact quite sadly disgusting: he is so strongly appalled by what he is doing and yet his anger is continuing to make him move into something he hates. Unfortunately it is such a good depiction of how people live, with this sense of self-loathing growing underneath in their unconscious, being degusted by things they do, yet doing them anyway because of some need, or obligation, or sense of responsibility, or whatever you wanna call it.
    I will finish off with this: anger is not a buff, only a fake sense of empowerment that covers the unfelt pain underneath.
