I did not expect minimalism to bring to my attention the various "fantasies" I had about myself. These included how I would (one day!) host large parties; wear flawless makeup; quilt my own bedcover - by hand! Much of my purchasing was done to sustain and build these "fantasy versions" of myself. As I decluttered I learnt a lot about myself - and most of it by simply recognising my own realities.
My sister came over today (her mom just recently passed away) and i brushed her hair for her. We had a WHOLE discussion on how the first thing to go with depression, is hygiene. My kids' dad passed away in October and immediately following was Halloween, 2 kids birthdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas. I was so overwhelmed that idk how long it was before i changed my underwear and brushed my hair. For whatever reason, takung a shower is just TOO MUCH. I think it's that way for everyone. I'm very much a minimalist and I'm a firm believer it helped me so much with getting through an extremely hard time. Did/do I still get extreme sadness? Yes. Is it easier to pull through when all it takes for me to feel just the teeniest ounce better, is pick up 2 items off the floor and have a clean room vs having to do a full blown declutter to get the room mildly clean? ABSOLUTELY. You know what gets me feeling better? People. You know what i don't want around when my house is a mess and im a mess? People. LOL such a vicious cycle.
This was my favorite video regarding minimalist I have ever watched. I feel a lot of people discuss how much they get rid of and clean out their life but not many go through the reasons why or how it has affected their life as openly as you have . I am so thankful to have watched this video. Thank you
The most surprising benefit of mimimalism to me was a lessening of feeling like I needed more things... I walk through a whole store completely open to purchasing something I really want and need and walk out empty handed completely satisfied. I did not expect that the less I had the less I would want need or feel I lacked. I am truly more fulfilled.
Yes! At first I totally avoided temptation like Target, then when I went there for something specific I had to repeat the list of items I needed over and over, like a chant in my head. I had to do that to avoid buying other things. Now I've built up my resistance, and can walk through without needing my chant. It's freeing!
Wow I love this. I believe this wholeheartedly! I have gotten into the “better, not more/quality over quantity “ mindset, and it has SIGNIFICANTLY reduced my desire to mindlessly shop. I used to love target and random shopping at stores, and now I can’t think of a thing to spend a target gift card on!
I wandered Target and got a few things for the kids today. Even my 3 year old understands that we're not getting everything. It's amazing the patience I had to let her lead the way because our list was short and I wasn't stressed. Simpler living makes us all significantly happier.
For me, I found that I started looking at my stuff as lost retirement money and a waste of Earths resources. Now I am very intentional about what I purchase and bring into the house. I ask myself two questions: 1. Is this a better investment than retirement? 2. Where will the items home be in the house? Great channel, it's been so fun following your journey.
Everything you said resonates with me. I am 73 years old, kids grown. When they were little we lived “more is better”. Tons of school clothes every fall, Christmas was huge, always shopping! Not to mention the money stress! In the last few years I’ve realized how crazy it all was. I wish I knew then what I know now!
Since day 1 with you. So stuck you were. And now, I hear you motivate other people, by explaining and showing all the weaker spots. Well done, Erica. Keep doing it, Erica. Be you, always awesome!
I realise now that when my children were small I used to buy (inexpensive) stuff to get the high that dopamine gives. I didn't realise that at the time! It takes 10 minutes for dopamine to recede ... so now I walk away and if I still feel I need the item after half an hour I consider buying it.
Yes! My mom gave me a 15 min notice that she was coming over just a few days ago and all I had to do was swish the toilet and take a shower myself. My husband pointed it out to me. In the past I would have hours of notice and be running around cleaning and stuffing things away - no more
What an awesome heartfelt video! You aren't preaching and are just showing your feeling and growth that minimalism brought into your life. I have watched your journey from the very beginning and I 'm amazed at what you have achieved so far. You seem more comfortable with yourself and your family. I retired 6 yrs. ago and my hubby and I went through our home and decluttered one room at a time. We went from very little savings to a bank acct. in the thousands. Thank you for sharing your journey with me. All the best to you and Andy and family!! Look forward to many more.🤗🤗🤗
Time. Absolutely, time. Time with my kids. Time with my husband. Time with me. Time to breathe. The gift of time has given me so much freedom and stability in such a restrictive and uncertain world.
Unexpected fact I came to realize: I have always had minimalism/cleaning/organization tendencies since ever but my family is the complete opposite, so I kind of became what they expected. Result: felt horrible and stressed. Lesson: sometimes you are different to those around you, just stay true to yourself.
You are very brave. I've watched your journey from the beginning. So happy for you. You inspire me to move forward decluttering my 62 years of stuff. Thank you!
@@EricaLucasLoves Me too. When I saw Marie Kondo's 'The life changing magic of tidying' .... I was doubtful. As you say in the video, unexpected things happen. All the best to you and your family.
Hi Erica, I have been following you quite awhile now, but seeing your old playroom really shows the hard work, the decisions you had to make, the effort you put into decluttering... great job, really life changing for you and your family xo
Thank you for the courage to be so honest. Your heartfelt sharing has touched me in very many ways. I’m in a depressive state again. By looking around my house it reflects that. It’s time to try and turn it around again.
No Control over my home. That is how I felt. I struggle every day with depression and anxiety. Since I have become a minimalist I feel great. Do I still have depression and anxiety? Yes! But now when I come home the stress of the day goes away because my home is nice and quiet. I have enjoyed less to manage that’s so awesome!! I have less on my to do list. That makes me happy. My home is my sanctuary. Thank you, you have helped me so much. Watching your videos has motivated me to get my home in order. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Appreciate your honesty Erica, in what is such a personal subject. I have loved your decluttering videos and the journey thusfar. Great to see you and Andy forging ahead in the new lifestyle. (I’m still in the anxiety, crying and barring company stage).
When I mentioned to my husband, I need and want to declutter, he thought I was mad. He couldn't understand how I felt about all the clutter that we had accumulated. I knew I had to. One day I started, baby steps, and was chuffed about the amount I was putting in the trash or donating. Then I heard we were moving, and all the stuff went into storage. I now dread going back to the storage units, because I know there is still a crazy amount of junk to be cleared. But one day, I'll get there. Enough is enough. Thank you for your motivation. I'll keep on listening to your videos. Take care.
I understand who you were before minimalism, because that was me. It was difficult for me to take a shower, to drink water, to do anything . I was in bed constantly and was obese. So unhealthy mentally, I would break down constantly when I tried to work, do school, and or try to just take care of myself. When I fell, I stayed down. I can now say that I am the happiest I have ever been ! I am 40 pounds down, have a Beautiful baby girl, and am trying to learn to push myself to do more. It can only go up from here. Thanks for being vulnerable.
It's so encouraging to see how far you've come in your minimalism journey. I know you've helped and encouraged so many just by sharing your story. 💕 And can we just talk about how cute baby Ranger was in that clip?! 😍
So much important results... Out of “CHAOS” as flylady puts it “Can’t Have Anyone Over Syndrome”.....Erica , to us, u look so much as family...understanding us 💕💕💕💕💕💕
I really REALLY needed to hear this this morning! Thank You for being open about depression and everything.... you have so inspired over and over on your journey! Love you
I am saving this video for encouragement. I’ve watched your video channel almost from the beginning. I never believed you would be able to get rid of the stuff you’ve let go. Especially from those memory bins. You are very authentic and articulate. Your willingness to be so transparent has impacted me and I’m sure so many others.
I'd say minimalism has made me more self assured. I still have some areas that I'm working on decluttering, but now I can confidently say "yes! This will bring value to my life as I am now" or "no, I don't need/want/love this as much as what I already have" or "the idea of this is great, but it would be for my fantasy self. I'll release myself from the pressure I'd feel with that item at this season in my life".
When you said you only had $3 in your savings I immediately went 😬 thinking how scary that is. But then a moment later I realised that 12 months ago I was in almost the exact same situation!!! I have also felt many of the benefits of minimalism that you describe so I wholeheartedly agree that it can bring unexpected benefits to your life
I think before I buy after decluttering and living with less. I’m picky about what comes into my house. Erica- how you handle birthdays and holidays with gifts coming in would be a great video.
Thank you for sharing your story about anxiety and depression.. I suffer from both and it helps to know that I am not alone. You have come along way, and when you feel depressed and sad, one thing you should remember is you have children that are happy and healthy and you are the reason why. Stop being so hard on yourself and think of all the positive things you have in your life. Writing these down daily helped me,
I love you so much, because you don't know how hearing you say " I have been decluttering for 1.5 to 2 years now." As have I!!! Sometimes it is overwhelming to think about, however, look at the difference that time has made on my happiness, peace of mind, and optimism for the future!! You validate my hard work when you say "it has taken time." I know it was all so worth it!!
Erica I agree with everything you just said. I am very intentional now when I bring stuff in my home I have cut down a lot on my spending. Thank you for sharing your journey and your family.
My favorite videos have those containers of sentimental items you been sorting thru❤️ Started following your channel when you just begun this journey. Thanks for sharing the benefit of decluttering.
Hey Erica! My kids are teens/young adults now. It always amazes me what they do and don't remember about their younger years. Whenever I watch one of you videos I feel joy for your kids, and a knowing that they won't remember the old way.
Wow! That playroom. You have probably saved thousands just minimalizing it. Your video really tied together the minimalist ideas for me and I am practicing all the time.
I also look forward to your videos so much-I would say the most unexpected change was that I became a more organized, confident ESL teacher. When I first went through my apartment, I noticed even though I had the same amount of time... I felt like I had more of it. And the time I did have I used more wisely when it came to lesson-planning.
yes, i remember your 1 st videos. i felt your struggle and despair. 💖🥺 i felt so bad and prayed for you. So glad you are getting where you want to be in your family, home life, NOT ALL STORMS COME TO DISRUPT YOUR LIFE, SOME COME TO CLEAR YOUR PATH. ~Blessings to you and your family
Another hurdle you were dealing with was that your husband was away for long periods of time and that’s hard, especially with little ones and being home,. Love your videos ❤️
I talk to my husband everyday of how good I feel to became minimalist. We were counting how many boxes of stuff we got rid off and how we got so many things in the first place and its mindblowing. Now we need to declutter homeschool/crafts , bathroom cabinets and bookshelves. I feel so accomplished and feels good that the things we are buying have a purpose (to improove our quality of life) Thank you so much for the inspiration 🥰
I was wondering this too! They must love having more space and time, plus the task of keeping their room clean is enjoyable now I’m sure. I’m also curious if they’ll grow up and forget about the clutter or keep the valuable lessons of minimalism and follow your path.
I have to tell you some of these Navy guys are the worst hoarders ever! Both my husband and my brother in law are retired Naval Officers. Both of my sister and I have moved many times during their active duty years (especially my sister’s family! They moved 13 times in 15 years!). Both my sister and I have experienced the moving of unopened boxes, from one place to another. Being moved from one quarters or house to another, stored in attics, crawl spaces and basements. It’s frustrating for both my sister and I to get the husbands to go through those boxes, and deal with them. Especially when both my sister and I (children of an alcoholic parent) can’t stand chaos! It’s so frustrating especially now that we are both in our forever homes.
Hi Erica, I joined your journey about half way through last year and I saw you blossom it has been a privilege to watch and thank you for sharing your journey and beautiful family. I got started on minimalism by accident I wanted to declutter my wardrobe because like you I couldn’t decide what to wear as it was just to full of stuff. I have got rid of so much and like you have been slowly building my wardrobe with intention and now like you can get ready in the morning easily. I have also enjoyed watching the minimal mom and a lot of her videos have really helped as well and I have gone through the house and simplified each space. I also have had depression and anxiety and it has had a profound effect on that in such a great way. I am still on my journey but it has also become life changing just from decluttering my wardrobe. Once again thank you beautiful lady.
Wow this really hit my heart ♥️ I love your videos! A lot of what you said is how I feel. I am not depressed, I don’t think. I do have big time stress/ anxiety. We do have way to much stuff and I am trying to go through it. Last summer/ fall I put a bunch of stuff at the end of the driveway for free! Some of it is hard to get rid of or find a place to take it. I to want to be able to say yes to our kids. I also have my 85 year old mother living with us who has dementia, so that is hard. And a lot of stuff in the house is hers too. Trying to hide it away and see if she misses it. Then I can give it away. It’s all so hard. I have stopped buying stuff.
I think that minimalism has given me more free time. I have time for activities I enjoy that is not cleaning. My house has room to breathe now that it is just my husband and I and not the stuff for 4 kids. I love that everything has a home. It makes things easier to return things to their home. I feel far less stressed. It is not that I never get the urge to buy things but I am better at knowing if I truly need it and do I have room for it or will I replace something with that item. I love your Channel. I am past the little kid stage but I think I will introduce your channel to my daughter who has kids and a lot of stuff.
Excellent tactic Erica. Your journey into minimalism has been so interesting. A while back I didn't see you as very minimal but I so want you to know that I was somewhat judgemental and overlooked where you started from. It's those pre videos of your other house and the crawl space etc which was my lightbulb moment on how brave, consistent and transformative you are. So a big cyber hug to you girl! I think you glow with purpose and I particularly love how accepting and caring of yourself and others you are. Thanks for sharing .
This is a very well done video. The thing that I was dealing with the most, but you said it better... Was wanting to say yes to my kids more, but I kept saying no because it made another mess and I was exhausted! And they would get it out on their own independence... And then I'd have glitter glue in the carpet, so I started locking everything up. And we wouldn't use it because I was too tired to get it out. Since I have less now, it's easier to say Yes and get things out for them because it's in convenient places, all together, and easier to manage. But I'm not finished yet, there are still some places in the house that are stressful and overwhelming and feel like there isn't a solution for. But this video gave me some hope that maybe I'd be able to find a solution.
I love your authenticity and your willingness to share with us your difficult journey through becoming minimalish. The more honest we can be is therapeutic for ourselves and also the best way to help others. You have a beautiful family and now you will be able to fully enjoy the time you have with them.😊❤️🙏
This video really hit me in the heart! Your reasons for why you started your journey are the exact same as mine! I honestly could relate to every single thing you said. And prior to finding you, I was starting to feel like I was all alone. Thank you for sharing this with us!! ♥️
Really good video.....I’m trying to minimize, but it’s been a struggle for me. I’ve got lots of motivation, but little energy. Working the election polls, takes me a week and a half to recover from. However was told by a therapist that I have to much stuff. No kidding, but as I work through my minimalism journey, it’s helping me to find out why I’m holding on to junk. Today I’m going to try to put together a laundry station, which I hope it will help to reduce the number of baskets used.
This is perhaps the best video you have done Erica. It is honest and straight forward. I have enjoyed you for a while. I have used some of your hints. You go girl! Erica. You are doing well. Keep it up!
I remember the first video of yousharing your previous box filled room. I remember thinking "one day at a time". Now, you are a whole new woman, Ranger was a little puppy 🐶. Lol. Well done!!
I've watched your journey almost from the beginning. You have gave me a new perspective on stuff, money, guilt, decluttering...so many things. Thank you!!
I’ve been watching you for a while and you have come such a long way. I look forward to your videos 😌 minimalism is so wonderful I’m also happy to have found this lifestyle
Loved this, and agree whole heartedly with every point you made. I was so shocked by how life changing minimalism was for me in my life that in the early stages I would talk about it to anyone who would listen! I've chilled our a bit and just continue to enjoy these benefits you have mentioned, but still love to chat about it when the opportunity arises 👍
Thank u Erica for this wonderful video. I understand why u cried because I am still in the mess that u were in at that stage of your life. I have been decluttering since January but I am still overwhelmed with the amount of stuff. I know I must keep going because the rooms that I have decluttered are just so easy to manage.
I am so grateful for you! I can totally relate to the anxious feeling clutter brings. I don’t know if I’ll ever be a minimalist, but I am definitely living my life with more intention and it feels good to get rid of things that no longer serve me. 💜
Like you a couple of years ago I have to move a lot, so I said this is too much stuff, every year I have to start again and we are only two my husband and me, why two persons have so much? so I start to investigate and boom there was Kon Marie since then my minimalism process starts. We still have things but we know what we have, and what we have we love it. Although start to be more sustainable and change even my way of seeing food, I lost 40 pounds, just changing my habits, zero dairy products, gluten-free, no processed sugar, no conservatives. Minimalism has changed my life, I can go to a mall and not buying anything, and I feel great. Greetings from Italy.
I’m So very happy for you and your family Erica! Your children are very fortunate to have parents who are so thoughtful and open to changing their ways. It’s very admirable. I’ve never had clutter like you describe and show but your channel has helped me to embrace intentional choices . I am finally allowing myself to have the home I’ve always wanted through intentional design... ridding myself of perfectly functional furniture and decor ( by donation and FB marketplace) which has then and now allows the space to have what I truly want. Some thru retail and some thrifted. It is a wonderful feeling to be building an environment and atmosphere where you truly feel at home.! ❤️🇨🇦
I would be interested to hear more about if hind sight is helping you see how things snowballed out of control. Moving so much? Hubby gone so much? Not working on a budget and things as a team and being overwhelmed with it by yourself? Home schooling seemed to be a big part of it. It might help other people to see the beginnings and stop it. Also did UA-cam help you pull out of it? You speak about not wanting people to see your house yet you showed thousands. Did we encourage you and bring accountability?
I can’t remember the last time I related to another person as much as I do with you! I just started 3 days ago and I can’t believe I didn’t start this sooner, I always pictured minimalism as people with the extreme tiny homes. I think everyone can benefit from this lifestyle and I’m so excited to see where my family and I are a year from now, thank you so much for this video ❤️
Hi Erica, I've been following you since the start, and it has been amazing to watch you bloom and grow as a mother and wife, your smile is bigger and more real, yes your home is lovely and clean/tidy and all but it's the changes in you that are in my opinion the best, 💖
Thank you Erica! I don’t know how I missed this video! I have seen recently that quite a few make up brands have ‘forever toxins’ in them! I’d enjoy hearing your take on healthier make up brands/options. God bless! ❤️ Jennifer from Ohio
I've been with you since day one. This was an amazing video. You have come so far and it's a joy to watch your videos. I just wish there were more of them. Hint hint. Thanks for all your wise knowledge. I find that minimalism has cut down on housework time. I also shop less because I don't need as much. Have a wonderful week.
Thank you so much for sharing. I deal with anxiety, at times, depression and just a sense of overall overwhelm. I'm in my late 30s and pretty sure I have ADHD Innatentive Type. It may be something to look at that could help explain the mental health issues. ❤
I love watching decluttering videos, and have found yours to be very unique as you share your process and explain how you arrived at decisions. I most relate to your channel than anyone else's. Thank you :) I don't have a husband or kids, but do live with some of my family to help with living expenses, and I want to do these things for my young nephew. We were raised with mess, and only since my last move has it most bothered me the amount of stuff we all have. Can only work on myself, but still. A much clearer mind:)
This is my favorite video of yours. Thank you so much for your honesty and your realness. I'm going to keep it to remind me of your wisdom when I'm a mom myself (single mom and hopefully in 1-2 years). Thank you again! You rock :)
Mom of Teens here- 1. I loved this video, what a great recap 2. You’re hair looks amazing 3. You think you like minimalism now... just wait until they are teens. You are going to LOVE it. It creates time for family relationships, it takes away reasons for silly spats. You can enjoy your stage now, but trust me, you will love life in 10 years even more than now.
And can we just talk about how cute baby Ranger was in that clip?!
Love you
I am still praying for you, Sheila.
It’s an honest struggle! Letting go is hard!
I have also felt many of the benefits of minimalism that you describe so I wholeheartedly agree that it can bring unexpected benefits to your life
That’s so true, it was so sad when I discovered how much stuff I was buying that I didn’t have.
Writing these down daily helped me,
Your whole family seems soooo much happier and loving. Congratulations!
We have decluttered along with you this year and also have done the debt payoff. We have done the very same. 🌸❤️
The best thing you have is your family. So loving! Your a great mother.
When you are brutally honest like this your light shines! Such a great post.
You are my hero. I recommend you and your decluttering videos to ALL my clients.
Thank you!!
My favorite videos have those containers of sentimental items you been sorting thru❤️ Started following your channel when you just begun this journey. Thanks for sharing the benefit of decluttering.
Have another next week!
Hey Erica! My kids are teens/young adults now. It always amazes me what they do and don't remember about their younger years. Whenever I watch one of you videos I feel joy for your kids, and a knowing that they won't remember the old way.
10 excellent observations! You’ve come so far! Thanks for sharing. ❤️
Yes!! I’m so happy to read this!!
yes, i remember your 1 st videos. i felt your struggle and despair.
I feel so accomplished and feels good that the things we are buying have a purpose (to improove our quality of life)
Thank you so much for the inspiration 🥰
It would be interesting to hear what your kids think about the changes you’ve made.
Sending much love Erica ❤❤ 😁 Seeing you change as a person over the past year and a half has been amazing. You're a superstar ✨😊❤ x x x
I love your authenticity and your willingness to share with us your difficult journey through becoming minimalish. The more honest we can be is therapeutic for ourselves and also the best way to help others. You have a beautiful family and now you will be able to fully enjoy the time you have with them.😊❤️🙏
Honesty heals and helps!
Lol. Well done!!
Thank you Erica, for always being transparent and encouraging. I am where you were and struggle every day to overcome the overwhelm.
You’re wonderful Erica! Thank you so much for sharing the WHOLE journey.
Erica Lucas: You did an awesome video. Also, I love you humor/what is important, family.
This was one of your best videos. Love your honest, sweet heart. Enjoy your lovely family and your new life.
Thank you. This is one of those ones I just sit and talk and allow vulnerabilities.
Thank you!
All of these things and more. It's given me a voice.
Such a beautiful, honest conversation. Thanks for sharing your journey with us, you are truly inspiring! ❤️
Minimalism is a mindset that becomes a way of life
I can’t remember the last time I related to another person as much as I do with you! I just started 3 days ago and I can’t believe I didn’t start this sooner, I always pictured minimalism as people with the extreme tiny homes. I think everyone can benefit from this lifestyle and I’m so excited to see where my family and I are a year from now, thank you so much for this video ❤️
Excellent video! I’m so happy to see you feeling so good about life. 😘👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Been with you right from the start of your journey - you have done so well lol from 🇮🇱 Israel 🇮🇱 💖
Love returned!
Thank you for motivating me. I see your videos, I try harder to made time to tidy, get cleaning done, declutter too.
Hi Erica, I've been following you since the start, and it has been amazing to watch you bloom and grow as a mother and wife, your smile is bigger and more real, yes your home is lovely and clean/tidy and all but it's the changes in you that are in my opinion the best, 💖
Thank you for being so honest. I feel all those things you have described.
thank you for this honest and beautiful share
Thank you Erica! I don’t know how I missed this video! I have seen recently that quite a few make up brands have ‘forever toxins’ in them! I’d enjoy hearing your take on healthier make up brands/options. God bless! ❤️ Jennifer from Ohio
😊😊😊😊😊 Great job!
I love your message. I am striving to be more minimalist.
Thank you for sharing , yes it's changed my life also.
Thank you for sharing your journey and happy to see you living the life you have earned through your hard work
Thank you so much for sharing.
You rock :)
Mom of Teens here-
1. I loved this video, what a great recap
2. You’re hair looks amazing
3. You think you like minimalism now... just wait until they are teens. You are going to LOVE it. It creates time for family relationships, it takes away reasons for silly spats.
You can enjoy your stage now, but trust me, you will love life in 10 years even more than now.
Thanks for all you share.
😊
Thanks autocorrect, but I actually meant “your hair”. 🤦🏻♀️
You are terrific. Congratulations on the changes you have made. Jessica Waters turned me on to your channel. :-)
Yessss to all of everything in this video!!!
Love this video. I agree with you on many cases. And I love your hair! 🌞
